New Mac Pro buyers recommendation - please help

hello there -
i'm looking to buy a Mac Pro for use as a FCP video editing station. i'm not going to be doing anything too fancy with it, but i want to run FCP Studio 2, and will load it up with 2-4 GB of RAM for sure.
i'm confused by the specs which state :
An AGP or PCI Express Quartz Extreme graphics card (Final Cut Studio is not compatible with integrated Intel graphics processors)
nowhere does anyone specify what a "Quartz Extreme graphics card" is....
i'm looking at something like this:
Refurbished Mac Pro Quad 2.66GHz Intel Xeon
http://store.apple.com/us/product/FA356LL/A
Two 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon processors
1GB (2 x 512MB) memory (667MHz DDR2 fully-buffered DIMM ECC)
250GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s 7200 rpm hard drive
16x SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics with 256MB memory
does that graphics card do what i want it to do?
where you you find a list of what is a compatible FCP graphics card?
thanks
bbbb

that's really good to know you can put in larger drives than is specified by apple. eventually i may be doing some HD. but i know the ropes about RAID and would only put on there capture scratch that i have tape backups for etc.
two more questions:
i'm considering going for the 8-core instead of the Quad-core. do you see much difference in performance with FCP?
is there much need for more than 2GB of RAM? it's been a long time since i bought a new computer....
i'm guessing most of you will answer "if you are going to do any HD editing, then yes" to both of the previous questions
regards
bbb

Is there a way to open the SuperDrive disc drawer without the OS or the keyboard?
I had installed Boot Camp and was doing the Windows install, and I had the two keyboards I've had hooked up (the standard one that comes with the Mac Pro and this ergonomic keyboard I'm actually used to by Kinesis), and after I placed the Windows install disc in the drive and hit continue, after it went through all its loading and got to the point where it wanted me to hit Enter to set up Windows (or F3 to exit), neither keyboards were able to be recognized.
I did try plugging in my Windows PC's keyboard, but, uh, at this point there ain't no plug and play, and it wasn't seen either.
So all I could do is hit the power switch and then start it up again - but before powering up unplug the other keyboards and have only the standard Mac Pro keyboard connected, but apparently with that Windows Install CD in the SuperDrive and the Mac in whatever mode where it thinks it's installing Windows, I just get right back to the Windows setup, and again I can't send an Enter or even an F3 to escape.
My theory is that if I can just start up Leopard again and be running in a one keyboard mode with the standard keyboard, then the Windows install might work and see the keyboard.
At long last I am getting away from Windows, and now it is coming back to bite me and actually has me unable to use my spiffy new Mac Pro. Vindictive, eh?
If nobody has any helpful advice, I will of course call Apple Care folks tomorrow when they are open.
    Sigh...
Thanks in advance for any advice!
    Apple

Thanks for the system preferences advice. Yeah, when I'd go to start up tomorrow evening I'd be wondering why I'd have to hold down the Opt key to get to OS X...
My tricks to try to get the Windows Setup to see the keyboard didn't work. Even tried going with just a PC keyboard connected, booting into OS X to make sure it was seen there, then running the Boot Camp assistant to install Windows again.
The Windows Setup just doesn't see any keyboard plugged in to any USB port. Period.
    Dang Windows...
    Thanks,

  • HT4796 recently purchaced a macbook pro and cannot transfer music, contacts, notes etc. from my iphone 4 onto my new macbook pro!! please help

Im a ex windows vista user, who evently became fed up and converted to a macbook pro. i just purchesed the macbook pro yesterday and have been trying to transfer all my music, contacts, notes, apps, etc. from my iphone 4 onto my new macbook pro. nothing seem to be working without it trying to erase all my info off of my iphone 4. I didnt think this would be a issue where they are both apple devices, but im now starting to regret the decision to purchace this macbook pro. please help me so i dont loose all my info trying to sync both devices. thanks for you help and advice

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can only sync the iPhone with one Mac or PC, so your Mac is asking you to erase the device because you synced it with another Mac or PC. To avoid this, I recommend you to copy the "iTunes" folder of your old Mac or PC (in Music folder) to the Music folder of your Mac, so you'll have the same data on your Mac as the data you had on the PC.
To transfer contacts, notes, etc., I recommend iCloud > http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/

  • Using my New MacBook Pro in Brazil - Please Help

I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro, and plan to take it with me to Brazil next month. This is a gift for a relative of mine. Is anyone aware whether or not I need to consider addressing configuration changes to accommodate the fact that it will operate in Brazil as opposed to the US? I'm assumimg it will operate as it operates in the US, however specific changes in configuration, I will want to have taken care of prior to my arrival in Brazil. Also, can I have the Mac configured in Portuguese here?
    Thinkpad   Windows XP

I know that under System Prefs>International, you can set the default language to Portuguese. There are some other changes you can make there. As for power, no problem, the power supply is 100-240v. All you might need is an adaptor for the power brick. I'm not familiar with their plug setup. There are probably service centers in Brazil and if you have the extended AppleCare, you are covered worldwide.
Let us know of any specific concerns you want to have addressed

  • My Mac Pro stopped working-please help!

When I press the button to start the computer, it does not start anymore!!!! The silver light above the button flashes rapidly and there is a sound of a high-speed fan. This remains for as long as I let it be going.. I eventually shut it down - with the same start/end button, and the - after a while I tried again, hoping for some reset... But to no avail. When the "turn-on" (start) button is pressed again, the same scenario repeats itself: rapidly flashing silver light above the "start" button, and the sound of high-speed fan... Nothing further... Do you have any idea, as hat might happen?  What is possible to do in order to have it working again?
    Please help! Thank you.

If it's RAM, you can replace it yourself. Check the memory risers. If one of them has a red LED on, that's where the fault is. It could be either a DIMM or the slot it's in. You'd have to switch the DIMMs around to determine that.

  • Pulling the trigger on a new Mac Pro. Advice please.

Okay, here we go. I am a freelancer who shoots in 1080i and 720p using a JVC 700 U camera with really good glass. in a small market. So bringing the media in is a piece of cake. I do not see me going to 2K or 4k anytime soon. I produce a weekly hour long sports program and various other projects... training, docs, marketing videos, etc. Very seldom more than 4 streams on the timeline. I have a budget of around $5,000 for a new machine. Here is what I am leaning towards. I would appreciate any advice.
6 core, 32 GB ram, upgrade to D700 GPU's, 512 GB storage. I use two G-Tech 4TB Thunderbolt drives for media. I also have a Thunderbolt display. Any concerns or thoughts? You folks always have great advice so I am looking forward to your opinions.
    Cheers,
    Tom

Thomas, Just a sugestion…why not also post this in the MP forum, where the emphasis is more on hardware. Not that you might not get some greatanswers here…more to diversify. ((I'd give an opinion if I were more up to speed with the MP…)

  • Mac Pro is stuck - please help

The power went out briefly today while my MacPro was powered up. Once power was restored I
booted up and when the log in screen came up, the field was already filled in and over the speaker was the sound of you get when you have depressed a key but run out of text field. I backspaced the text and typed in my password and login ensued normally. Once my desktop was present the sound of the stuck keystroke reappeared and persisted. I unplugged the keyboard but the sound persisted. My wireless mouse worked fine. I tried open various applications as well as disk utility or various file menus but as soon as I release the mouse to select an option the menu options window closes. The computer is clearly repeating a keystroke on its own repetitively and will not allow any other action. I rebooted in safe mode with the same result. I tried to reboot to my external backup clone but it ignored the keys held down during bootup and proceeded as it normally would. I tried to bootup to disk and the same thing occurred. I am completely stumped.
    Any advice is appreciated

    Hi KJK555
    Thanks for your reply.
Last evening after trying multiple times to correct including disconnecting all the peripherals and also trying to get to disk utility with no luck, I put Disk Warrior in the optical drive but when I tried o boot to the disk the computer ignored the keyboard and went straight to normal bootup, however once up the disk image of Disk Warrior showed up on desktop and when I clicked on it everything started to act normally, weird. So I proceeded to run disk utility verify and repair and did so successfully. I then proceeded to do a bunch of work and backups etc. I let the computer sit, idle for the day and went back to it this evening and decided to reboot and see if this had resolved.
On boot up things went normally ih no sound however when I got to the desktop and tried to double click on file folders or file menus I was unable to open. The drop downs show up if I right click but as soon as I move to select an option the menu disappears. I rebooted again with the same result. When I log off the sound comes back but haven't got the sound in any other circumstances I have found.
I can double click on dock icons and those applications open. If I use key commands to open applications folder and double click on an app there , nothing occurs.
I will look into cache cleaning, have never done that so will have to lok into it. Any other ideas would be most welcome. Thanks again.

  • Alt key switching documents instead of Creating Clipping Mask - New Mac Pro 2014 - Please help

I just got a new Mac Pro, and when I use the alt/option key as a shortcut in the layers palette (to create clipping masks and duplicate layers) instead it switches to other documents that I have open.  It's only after this happened that I realized how often I use the option key in my work flow and it's frustrating.
    Please help,
    Thanks,
    Lonno

Just solved it.  It had to do with my secondary monitor, which is where my layers palette was.  I used this link:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5476222?tstart=0
and turned off all the mission control settings I don't use.  Apparently it was switching monitors whenever I used the alt key.

  • When the new Mac Pro's with E5 Processor coming out? Please help

    Hello People.
I am in desperate situation at the moment. I had a late 2008 Mac pro which i recently sold and bought the new 8core 2.4ghz Mac pro from best buy about a week ago. As soon as i bought it, i found out that Apple is coming out with a new Mac Pro loaded with the new xeon E5 processor. My question is that when Apple is coming out with the computer since the rumor said its coming out in the beginning of March. I paid $3400 for the new computer and i really want the one which has all the new stuff in it. I have about 2 weeks left to return the computer to Best Buy and at the moment don't know what do.
Does anyone has answer to my question?
    Thanks

Seeing no one, not WSJ or ComputerWorld or CNBC, just speculation. For all we know it will be another mid-Summer too..
I do think the 2.4 8-core is a ''weak' system choice. More apps and more productive to go with a higher clocked 6-core or something.
I'd direct attention to www.macperformanceguide.com that argues, if you need it don't postpone for what might be.

Even if there was an annoucement it often takes time to sort out, ship, etc.

  • I've installed windows 7 with the help of bootcamp on my macbook pro 2011. Please help me how to install mac drivers for windows7 64 bit???

I've installed windows 7 with the help of bootcamp on my macbook pro 2011.
Please help me how to install mac drivers for windows7 64 bit???

You either download drivers from within Boot Camp Assistant and save to USB FAT disk, or you insert and use 10.6.x OS X DVD when in Windows and install and run the SETUP from there.

Step 4: Install the Boot Camp Drivers for Windows
After installing Windows, install Mac-specific drivers and other software for Windows using your Mac OS X installation disc.  The Mac OS X disc installs drivers to support Mac components, including AirPort,built-in iSight camera, the Apple Remote, the trackpad on a portable Mac, and thefunction keys on an Apple keyboard.
The Mac OS X disc also installs the Boot Camp control panel for Windows and theApple Boot Camp system tray item.
To install the Boot Camp drivers:
1 Eject the Windows installation disc.
2 Insert the Mac OS X disc.  If the installer doesn’t start automatically, browse the disc using Windows Explorerand double-click the setup.exe file in the Boot Camp directory.
    3 Follow the onscreen instructions.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed Windows  Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.
Windows that appear only briefly during the installation don’t require your input.
If nothing appears to be happening, there may be a hidden window that you mustrespond to. Check the taskbar and look behind open windows.
Important: Do not click the Cancel button in any of the installer dialogs.
4 After your computer restarts, follow the instructions in the Found New Hardware  Wizard to update your software drivers (Windows XP only).
5 Follow the instructions for any other wizards that appear.
6 Check for updated Boot Camp drivers by using Apple Software Update or going to www.apple.com/support/bootcamp.
If You Have Problems Installing the Device Drivers
If it appears that the Boot Camp drivers weren’t successfully installed, try repairing them.
    To repair Boot Camp drivers:
1 Start up your computer in Windows.
2 Insert your Mac OS X installation disc.
3 If the installer doesn’t start automatically, browse the disc using Windows Explorerand double-click the setup.exe file in the Boot Camp directory.
4 Click Repair and follow the onscreen instructions.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed Windows  Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.
If you need to reinstall specific drivers, you can install one driver at a time. For example,if your built-in iSight camera isn’t working, you can reinstall just the iSight driver.
Individual drivers are in the Drivers folder on the Mac OS X installation disc.

Hi, i am living in Vietnam but bought a Macbook pro on my trip to Hong Kong.  I cannot access Facebook on Mac in vietnam.  Please help.  Thanks.
I also bought Microsoft Office Home and Student and cant use the Outlook.  Is there anyway to just install the Outlook on my Mac?  Or i have to buy a new one which is is Home and Business?
    Thanks,

Try enabling the Personal Hotspot on the iPhone and connecting the Mac to the Internet thru it. If Facebook works ok then, that would mean the ISP is either blocking or having connection problems whereas the phone carrier is not.
Be mindful that carrier data charges can be outrageous so use this as a test first.

  • Recommendations for audio interface with new mac pro to avoid latency?

    Hi friends,
I have a new Mac Pro on order for editing video in FCPX, but Presonus says my older Presonus Firebox won't work with Mavericks and the new Mac Pro. Do you have a recommendation for a replacement?
I only use the interface to drive 2 powered expternal speakers and a headset, so I don't need something super sophisticated.
As I read about units, almost all come with USB 2.0 connections. But the new Mac Pro only offers USB, Thunderbolt 2, Dual Gigabit Ethernet, and HDMI 1.4 Ultra HD inputs. If I can't find a fairly inexpensive audio interface with USB 3.0, I'd have to go through another connection to get into the Mac Pro.
The key for me is to make sure and avoid latency, a critical issue for editing video.
Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks. Duncan

    Thanks Mark and Smokerz,
Your point about USB2 working in USB3 ports is something I wasn't aware of. That opens a lot of doors for me. And I'll look into the Yamaha sound board as one possibility.
Thank you both for helping me.
    Duncan
