New Mac Pro, EFI 1.5 update is not being applied, repeated reboots

I just unpacked my new Mac Pro (64 bit) and ran through the updates. It's stuck on EFI Update 1.5. It appears to apply, the system reboots a couple of times, but Software Update still says it's available and needs to be applied.
Can someone help me fix this? Did I do something wrong?
Thanks!

It really helps if you just read the notes in the patch screen, instead of being so eager to get your system in use
Sorry about that...

  • Help please , New Mac Pro and fans that they do not increase of rpm's

    Hello everyone.
I recently purchased a Mac Pro Quad Core 2.66 Ghz Nehalem. Without doing anything, just with firefox, the CPU temperature is 30 º, up there either.
But if I run programs that require lots of CPU power, the fans are still turning the same rpm's. I have seen temperatures of 62 º and the fans do not go hand in 600rpm (Boosta usually always do what you do at 857rpm. It does not move). All this I have checked with iStat.
I installed the smcfancontrol and I'm clearly not the fault of the fans, because this program can go make your rpm's Mac Pro, but, by itself, does not. I come from the PC world and am well aware that the motherboard is responsible for regulating the speed of the fans, depending on temperature.
I called Apple and Spain have told me that is normal but the response seems a little insulting to my intelligence and experience with computers. I do not know what to do and do not know if this is normal.
    I can help?
    Thanks and best regards
PS: Sorry for my English, I do not have much experience with English.

Maybe someone else can give a clear idea of what is "normal" - someone asked that last week.

As for iStat, I would rely on Hardware Monitor, it is more accurate, or the free version which is Temperature Monitor.
SmcFanControl was updated to 2.2 recently but I didn't check to see if it supports Mac Pro 2009 "Nehalem." It may or may not.
Depending on your room and environment, air ventilation, 30-62 are reasonable.
    http://www.apple.com/macpro/specs.html
The trouble with fans and thermal sensors is they can wait too long to kick in and is better to boost the fans 200-300 rpm to keep air flowing and temperature cool, rather than wait for heat to build up inside.
There is a System Management Controller (SMC) that handles fans, sensors, power management.

Not everyone likes to be asked what they don't know, and can respond inappropriate. They probably just didn't know.

I hit a couple good results from Google.

  • New MAC PRO: itunes audio playback-stuttering, glitching, skipping

I have a brand new mac pro 3.2ghz quad, with 8gb ram (bought a couple weeks ago). All seems fine with the exception of brief skips, glitches and stutters with audio playback in itunes. I tried updating to itunes 11 and this did not resolve the problem. My music files play fine on my girlfriends macbook pro (purchased over a year ago), and never had any problems on my old machine (imac 24inch aluminum). I went to apple with the problem and after multiple system recoveries they determined that the computer was faulty and sent me a replacement. I just received the replacement and tested out some downloaded music from the itunes store and the same problem happened. Am I just unlucky to get two computers with this issue? Is it the Mac Pros? Has anyone had this issue with mac based machines, specifically the mac pros? I saw another thread on the issue but seemed to be primarily windows users running itunes. The skipping happens as frequent as every 20-30 seconds to every few minutes, but it is definitely enough to notice
    Thanks.
    Baffled,
    Greg

    Hi Greg.
I seem to have discovered this problem this weekend. I listen to a lot of music from my apple devices and have done for years. What I have noticed this weekend is that both my Macbook 2008 and iMac late 2010 both suffer with a brief stutter every minute or so making the enjoyment of listening to music a little annoying. Both are running Mountain Lion 10.8.2. My iMac is running the 2.93 GHz intel i7 processor with 8GB ram. Playing music should be a doddle!
From my point of view both Macs are running independently to external speakers. The music I am running on those 2 devices has been ripped on both devices. e.g. Macbook has ripped and plays Apple Lossless format and my iMac has ripped and plays songs in 320kbps. My guess is its a bug with the new iTunes 11 or Mountain Lion although I have been using 11 since its release.
While I'm not able to supply a fix I think its safe to say its not your new Mac Pro. One other thing to note is that I have been running up until this weekend a 7 or 8 year old Mac Mini as a media device in my kitchen playing Apple Lossless format with no issues at all. This device however is running Snow Leopard with all updates applied. The Macbook is now playing the Lossless music with stutters that was ripped on the Mac Mini that was playing OK.
So is the problem Mountain Lion?
    Take care
    Paul

  • New Mac Pro with usb SSD

I have a new Mac Pro (2014) with latest updates. Any time I use my SSD it randomly restarts itself. Could be doiing anythign as simple as transfering one file or something like multi-track recording audio. The drive is Kingston SSDNOW KC300. (SSD is formated OS Extended) I am using a Apricorn SSD to USB adapter.
Here is the report from the last time it crashed.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Please HELP, I cant survive without logic more than an hour !

I think this is a known problem with Lion and some installs of Logic, I've seen it mentioned before.

If you can wait about a 3 months after 10.8 is released this summer and upon new hardware you should be in excellent shape to have not only a fastest latest machine, but a OS X version that all the bugs have been worked out. Plus the three free months of Apple hand holding while they figure out what they did wrong with the new OS version.
If you need a new machine now you'll have to get what you need obviously, but 10.8 should run on it just fine. However know that Apple tweaks things with more currently sellling hardware first, then later gets to the previous released models.
It's been my guestimation that your good for about two year old hardware with very recent OS X release, three years or older hardware you may want to reconsider sticking with the previous OS X version as your hardware is getting dated and likely has only a year left to go anyway (4 year average), so why bother mucking it up, slowing it down and having to buy all new/updated software and third party hardware because they won't make drivers for your new OS version?

To my knowledge the apple ID you registered your new mac to received all the included apps.  Try using that apple ID and see if it works.

Trying to update Adobe After Effects on both my new Mac Pro and older Mac Book Pro. Both running Mavericks 10.9.4.
Oddly, After Effects 11.0 runs on my Mac Book, but won't open at all on the new Mac Pro.  When I try to update to 11.0.2, in both cases it says "Update Failed. ....This update does not apply to you."
    What else can I try?

I am currently also having the same issue with After Effects on my macbook pro and I am trying to install 11.0.4, but I keep getting an error.
My software is student and teacher license, which I got the fall of 2012. This is the only adobe program that will not open on my computer and every time I open adobe bridge and look at update it says the programs are up to date.
I also have tired uninstalling the after effects I currently have  on my computer but it won't let me do that either.
Is there anything I can do to fix this problem?

It replaced a previous MacPro that would not support the new Mountain Lion.  When my new machine came in.  I swaped the dirve out of my old unit into the new and ran the new Lion update.  The machine has had this aforementioned problem since that time.  Also, I had the Legacy version of File Vault running on the old machine/drive, which I also turned off(thinking that was the problem)  but that did not fix the problem either.

Here is my panic log entry:

  • Help Configuring my New Mac Pro

I just purchased a new Mac Pro (early 2009 Quad Core" 2.66 (2009/Nehalem), and a second (1 TB) internal hard drive. I would like to transfer my applications, files, and profile from my Macbook Pro (early 2008 Core 2 Duo" 2.5) to the Mac Pro. I also want to install with Boot Camp a copy of Windows XP Pro (SP3) on a separate hard drive. I want the XP drive to be the 640 GB hard drive that came with the Mac Pro, and the MacOS drive to be the added 1TB hard drive. I want the Windows drive to have 4 logical partitions ( C, D, E, and F) with the C, D, and E being NTFS (so they can exceed 32GB) and, F drive being FAT (for read/write compatibility with MacOS). I've been doing a fair amount of reading both on this forum and have a tentative plan to accomplish the setup. But, a lot of what I'm planning to do is new to me. So, before executing my plan, I wanted to get some feedback. Any thoughts or comments on the steps in my plan would be much appreciated. Here are my planned steps:
    1. Turn on the new Mac Pro computer but don't transfer and applications or files - just transfer the profile. Then check to make sure that the computer is working properly.
    2. Turn off computer and install 1 TB hard drive and RAM upgrade.
    3. Turn on the computer and transfer applications and files from my Macbook Pro to the Mac Pro using Migration Assistant (located in the applications, utility folder). Connect the computers using Firewire 800 (9 pin to 9 pin cable). I currently don't have such a cable, but from what I have read the migration can be very, very slow if done using the ethernet network or a USB-2 cable. I've got about 200 GB on my Macbook Pro so I assume that the Firewire cable is the only sensible way to go.
    4. Test the system to see that the applications are working and check that the data files have been transferred.
    5. Download SuperDuper and use it to create a clone of the 640 GB drive on the new 1 TB drive. Make the 1 TB drive the boot drive by choosing it from System Preferences > Startup Disc
    6. Check and make sure the bootup from the 1 TB drive works properly.
    7. Check to make sure the EFI Boot ROM version on the Mac Pro is up to date. If it needs updating, download latest version from Apple support website and install.
    8. Check Apple support for updates to Boot Camp Assistant. Once I have the latest version open Boot Camp Assistant (in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder). Create Boot Camp partition that is the entire 640 GB hard drive.
    9. Insert the Windows XP CD and click Start Installation in Boot Camp Assistant. Select the Boot Camp partition for installation of Windows.
    10. As I begin the Windows install, I'm expecting that I will be offered at the start of the setup process an opportunity to create the 4 separate logical partitions that I want on the 640 GB hard drive. Format the hard drive with the 4 partitions.
    11. Select the partition where I want to put Windows Operating System and follow the Windows setup process to install Windows XP.
    12. Once Windows is installed, eject the Windows disc and insert to Mac OS disc. Install the Boot Camp drivers for Windows.

NTFS is read only already. You don't need anything just to access, only if you plan to write files, and NTFS won't like HFS file names if they have special characters.
XP SP2 or later, and would have to be able to transfer to new hardware. What it lacks is good multicore and memory management.
Newegg and Amazon has single system builder versions that can save but can't be used on another system. OEM (Dell, HP, etc) versions or "restore discs" won't work and aren't supported.
I said you can get by without BCA. You don't have to believe me but it is a waste to have to say everything twice. Windows 7 is perfectly capable of doing any formatting and installing without it.
Installing Windows 7 on Mac Pro is easier and different. There is a forum devoted to Boot Camp and Installing Windows.

  • New Mac Pro (6 core, D700, 32GB), Mavericks 10.9.4, dragging and scrolling lag, overall system bugginess

Since upgrading to 10.9.4 i've been beset with numerous bugs and general odd system behavior.
Previous to this update I had experience lag when using my Wacom Intuos 4 tablet. For example when doing a preview render in Maya the tablet would become unresponsive and laggy. This never occurred on my old Mac Pro 2008.
I noticed there was an update to the Wacom Drivers (6.3.8-2) so I did the update. After updating I've been experiencing dramatically slow screen redraw. So whenever I drag a window or scroll, the image stutters, flickers and lags as it tries to redraw to keep up with mouse position. This makes it impossible to use the computer.
I uninstalled the Wacom drivers and the lag and redraw errors persist. I looked at Activity Monitor to if it was some other system resource like Spotlight that was momentarily hogging resources. The only thing I notice is that the dreaded "kernel_task" seems to be using a lot of ram (1.46 GB) and cpu time (usually at the top of the list). Also, "com.apple.IconServicesAgent" seems to be using a lot of CPU time (usually #2 in the list).
I'm at a loss as to what to do about this other than re-install everything from scratch. I've read through numerous forum threads about the kernel_task issue but nothing seems to apply to the New Mac Pro.
Hopefully someone has some experience with these issues and some good advice for fixes.
    Jonathan

  • Mac Pro EFI Firmware 1.5 NOT installing (Yes, I RTFM)

Starting a new topic as the other one was marked 'SOLVED'.
    MacPro5,1 2.8 Quad.
Firmware 1.5 does install before shutdown, but the progress bar doesn't appear when holding the power button. After the loud firmware beep, the chime follows immediately and the machine boots up. Software Update keeps prompting to do the update again.
Have been on the phone with Applecare for over an hour, who have no idea why this thing doesn't work...
    Troubleshooting done so far:
    -Zapped PRAM, Reset SMC
-Downloaded standalone installer instead of Software Update
-Freshly installed 10.6.4 on FW800 disk and tried installing from that install
-Disconnected all peripherals including 27" LED Cinema Display
-Downloaded standalone installer on another network
There is no progress bar appearing and the bootrom stays on version MP51.007F.B01.
Strange: in the Utilities folder there is a Mac Pro EFI Firmware updater app that displays a "file may be incomplete or damaged" error when trying to start it.
Applecare had no idea, second line support puzzled as well...
    Any ideas ?

When you click OK for install, it'll do the little updater window, tell you it's optimizing, then shut down your computer.
You're in front of a shut-down MP 2010. You need to click *AND HOLD* the power button for a few seconds. It'll flash a few times, make a different tone and then you'll see the updater bar.
You cannot just power it up, you must click and hold until the little white power indicator light flashes.
    Welcome to MP51.007F.B03
p.s., Why it drops the file Mac Pro EFI Firmware.app which is "damaged" etc, into /Apps/Util/ I dunno. It does that for me too, but firmware is updated. You should be able to hit Software Update now and not keep seeing the EFI update show up.
If you're clicking AND holding the power button AND see the white light flash multiple times (it takes a few seconds, keep holding down the power button), and it still doesn't work... then I dunno.

  • New Mac Pro overkill for Logic Pro X?

    Hi all,
Is the new Mac Pro overkill for audio work? I use Logic Pro X and mainly use huge sample libraries with Kontakt, so I would get 64gb memory, a Lacie 10tb Thunderbolt drive to store the samples and 2 Apple Thunderbolt displays. Or would an iMac suffice?
I don't want to upgrade my old 8-core, dont want a previous gen 12-core, and the price doesnt matter.
    Thank you.

If you do want best ideal in performance for audio, then PCIe SSDs are great even now. And may really need TB2 to shine and share bandwidth.
SSDs with near zero seeks and latency and low prices for Samsung 840 EVO 1TB or 750GB are very appealing.
I would wait until - OS X has had two updates to refine drivers; 3-6 months for any needed changes in firmware for EFI and SMC (which seem to be a regular of ALL new Macs and Mac Pro models); even tweaks to production and TB2 chipsets and such, maybe even those new AMD GPUs.
Version "1.0" hardware and OS really, and of course vendors will now begin to really have some hands on and expect apps, Apple no exception - to need updates.

  • My brand new mac pro always had Internet connection issues at school. WHY is that? I see the school's Internet working perfectly fine on other PC's, but there is never a day where my mac doesn't have Internet connection issues at school. How do I fix it?

I got my mac pro in the middle of August. School started the week after. Internet was working perfectly fine at home. But at school, I never had a good connection. Sometimes on the good days I get a connection when I'm sitting at the exact spot in class I always sit at. It's ridiculous and it's frustrating. I invested my money into this laptop and I'm beginning to regret it. I thought it was the school's Internet, but I don't see Internet issues with other PC users. It's most frustrating on registration days and I'm trying to register for my classes before it gets taken, but again... Internet connection issues. It's random. Majority of the time, it doesn't work at all. I've done Network Diagnosis and turning WiFi off then turning it on again. I've done everything I could. I put my money on this laptop and it was a lot of money. I could have bought an 800 dollars laptop and I would have Internet connection anywhere on campus. So, I don't want to continue everyday to regret on buying this laptop every time I try to connect to the Internet at school or Starbucks or anywhere else. How do I fix this? What's the problem ?
At school, I heard this guy had a problem with Internet connections too and he owned a new mac book pro. He said something like Apple messed up on something, but he fixed it. If I knew mac book pro's had these issues I wouldn't have bought it in the first place. It's freezing on me every other day. It's ridiculous. But what concerns me the most is the Internet connection. So someone please tell me what can I do next to prevent the problem? Am I doing something wrong maybe?

    Hi Kevin,
I'm using an XLR input mic which is connected to the phantom power enabled XLR mic socket on a USB M-Audio M-Track. The M-Track is connected by USB to the Mac Pro - so effectively I've got an M-Audio USB soundcard with a mic input.  I've also tried a microphone that is a straight XLR to USB cable (guessing with some soundcard chip buried in the usb plug) but that also yields the same effect of bad latency, intermittent quality, stuttering and repeating and echoing (without the speakers on during record so its not feedback).
The mic works absolutely fine with other recording applications I have on the mac at the moment - albeit non-adobe ones (tested it on the EasyAudioRecorder - and it lives up to its name. it's easy)
I will try with Audition and report back, but sitting here right now I can imagine it would work fine with audition too - it just seems to be the way premiere is set up for recording into the timeline is a bit sketchy.  I'm willing to accept it might well be a quirk with the new Mac Pro trashcan - I'm not weighting all the woes on premiere.
Any thoughts or am I out of luck to sit with my fingers crossed for a fix in the next round of updates?
    Nathan.
