New Mac Pro/ Final Cut X User--Jaggies and Low Res Playback

Good morning,
New Macx Pro with Cinema display and Final Cut X (demo) user. Working with P2 footage and noticed jagged egdes in upon playback. In other words, the footages appears as low res. I have the program monitor is set to full res and "fit". I am also testing Premier on my Mac (I've used Premier for years on a PC) and noticed a similar issue, but the jaggies aren't quite as bad.
This issue has me worried. Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks,
GL

Okay, problem solved...whew! It turns out the playback setting in preferences was indeed set to "better..." and not high. Well, that deserves a...duh!!!
Thank you for the recommendation.
I also fixed the Premier issue. I had to specify custom presets for the project.
Regards,
GL

Should I buy airport express, extreme or time capsule?  I have my new Mac Pro. 2 iPhones, 2 iPads , and grandchildren who come with their devices.  I live in a two-level house.

A Time Capsule is an AirPort Extreme with a built in hard drive to allow your Mac(s) to back up automatically, so it's a logical choice if you need a wireless router and back up capabilities for your Macs
The AIrPort Extreme has a bit better antenna arrangement than an AirPort Express, so it would be a good choice for a two level house.
Depending on the location of the "main" wireless router, you may find that you still need to add an extender or two in other parts of the house for full, fast wireless coverage. The AirPort Express is a good choice for this duty.

does my new mac pro retina come with antivirus? And, for how long?

    Yes it does.
It's called OS X Lion - fully updated.
There are no known viruses for MAC OS.
Your current OS is your best protection
If however, you want to feel more secured, download ClamX AV and do a scan once a week to give you peace of mind.
    Good luck

  • Mac Pro - Final Cut Studio 2 - Adobe Production Premium - NO FLASH PLAYING!

I recently purchased a Mac Pro with Leopard, Final Cut Studio 2, and Adobe Production Premium suite. I got everything setup yesterday, and I exported a Quicktime reference file from Final Cut, and brought it into Flash CS3 Media Encoder. The file seemed to encode fine, but when I try to open it, it shows that the Flash Player opens, but the video never actually opens. I also tired to import the FLV file into Flash Pro, and it acts as though it imports, but it does let me preview it. The ONLY thing that I think could have caused a problem is that I also have Sorenson Squeeze installed, which has its own On2 VP6 encoder. Again, this may have nothing to do with it since I copied the file to another Mac machine that did not have Sorenson on it, and downloaded the standalone Flash Player, and it acted the same. Any ideas on why FLV files would not play back would be greatly appreciated. I have ALL updates installed for OS X Leopard, as well as the CS3 collection. Thanks in advance.

After downloading an FLV player, and realizing that Adobe Flash Player will not work, all is swimming.

  • New Macbook Pro, Final Cut Freezing

I have a fast new macbook pro, and when i press play on my timeline in fc, i get the rainbow ball. If i wait a while it unfreezes but it's unbearable. My last slower macbook pro didn't have this problem. What do I do?

Try moving things off the internal drive to FW. When you say you got a new MacBook Pro, I assume you mean NEW new without Card slot, if you got a new older refreshed model that has a slot, get a express card to hook up eSata drives. Even if you get past the stalls now, it wil mmake you happier later.

  • Mac Pro & Final Cut Pro X Choppy Playback?

I just purchased FCP X and have a problem during playback its really choppy, This is my system info if that helps

  • 2013 new Mac Pro will not boot up from and external hard drive

New 2013 MAC PRO running Yosemite will not not see a bootable external hard drive when starting up using option key?  Same External hard drive will boot up on 2013 Mac Book Pro running Yosemite.

Reading between tea leaves sometimes leaves some things to imagination.
You used SuperDuper latest version that was recently upgraded for Yosemite on a laptop running 10.10 (or even 10.9.3+) that is in a X-brand USB3 drive enclosure, not bus powered btw, moved it to the nMP and plugged it into a direct port, not going through a hub (monitors have hubs of course and there is only one real bus+controller on the nMP that ALL USB3 travels through.
Thunderbolt and self-powered would be nice but they cost a bit more.
I have read where Carbon Copy Cloner (now v 4.x) worked where others failed. I use to use both but have used CCC since its inception and use back in 10.2.2 forward along with SD! for a few years based on comments here.
Drivers missing? someone compared system extensions and found the ones needed for say the nMP are not there? how about running a 10.10.1 combo update and see if that changes - we USE to be able to apply updates to a system that we were not booted from, very handy (could update a sparse disk image of a system that way, one created with CCC).
WD Passports seem popular with laptop users, but they come here to this forum complaining that it doesn't work, disappears off the bus (spins down goes to sleep, acts like a green drive acts).

  • New Mac Pro 2.66 Ghz Nehalem Quad and FCP and Compressor

When something goes well for a change it deserves its rightful place in the posts of this discussion forum. I just completed my hook-up and an initial test on my new Nehalem quad Mac Pro, and I must say that once in a while things do work out.
    1. The noise level is non-existant. I literally had to check to make sure that the unit was on. This in comparision to my G5 which sounds like the SST on take off. I might now actually hear the audio on my video monitor.
    2. The speed is INCREDIBLE! Prior to shutdown, I ran a test by sending an hour's worth of mixed XDCAM EX/HDV footage to Compressor on my G5. At the highest quality 2 hour setting for DVD encoding (double pass) it took the G5 12.5 hours to encode. Running the same clip through the same version of Compressor in the Mac Pro took approximately 45 minutes. This roughly translates into a 16.5X increase in speed over my dual 2.5 Ghz processor G5. I'M SOLD! And for now, the Honeymoon continues.
The only drawback (besides the price) is that I had to buy a $100 adapter/power supply to enable my old 25" Cinema screen run on the new video card.
    Thanks

Mac Pro 1,1 (all Mac Pro models come with Xeon).
What matters is cleaning the X1900 of dust and from clogging intake and exhaust - every three months.
Run Apple Hardware Test from your OEM DVD.
Install SmcFanControl 2.x and keep the fans rpm to 800-900 instead of 499-599 base as minimum at least.
Monitor temperatures with Hardware Monitor or similar.
Have you been looking to see in System Profile: Memory if there are any errors?
Normally, clone backup update weekly and running Disk Warrior at the same time should be done to spot disk directory and file system problems before they get worse. Or any time your system freezes.
Freeze... and what you have 90% of the time is a corrupt directory and other errors.
At which time you may need to restore if you can't fix the problem. And don't rely on only Apple DU First Aid to find and repairs any and all errors.
For Snow Leopard maybe a flashed ATI 4870 to replace the X1900.
You may need to start over from scratch to get things stable once you find what is happening, and work with a test system until then with some trial and error. Format/initialize and clean install of 10.6.x for the OEM 10.4.7+.
At nearly 4 yrs now since it came out, not sure if you have plans for a new one.

  • Which E-SATA card for new Mac Pro??

I have the new Mac Pro 8-core 2.26GHz (Nehalem) and need to connect my two Western Digital drives via their E-SATA ports for video editing.
I bought a Sonnet Tempo card, having being led to believe this was one of the better cards, but sadly when I installed it, it didn't work. Careful reading of the small print on the Sonnet website informed me it wasn't actually compatible with the new MacPro.
Could someone recommend a E-SATA card (2 ports) for use with my system. I'm struggling to find one.
    Cheers
    Keith.

I have the new Mac Pro 8-core 2.26GHz (Nehalem) and need to connect my two Western Digital drives via their E-SATA ports for video editing.
    Hi,
Unfortunately, the WD MyBook is not ideal for video editing. The enclosures use a bridge board that splits the connection between USB/FireWire/eSATA. This type of connection usually slows eSATA performance and is not compatible with all eSATA controllers. As a result, starting with the WD MyBook puts eSATA users at a disadvantage.
I agree with hatter that you would be better off with the Sonnet Tempo E4P and the FirmTek SeriTek/5PM. You could still use the WD MyBook as a backup device.

    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/firmtek/5pm/
    http://firmtek.stores.yahoo.net/sata5pm.html
FirmTek sells a 2-port card with the SeriTek/5PM, but as it is Silicon Image SiI3132 based, performance will be limited to approx. 135MB/sec. with a single cable. If a dual bay direct connect enclosure like the SeriTek/2EN2 is used the RAID 0 performance will be approximately 150MB/sec. when the volume is empty.
Moving up to the Sonnet Tempo E4P can provide 210MB/sec. write and 250MB/sec. read performance with the SeriTek/5PM and a multi-drive RAID 0 configuration.
Most users interested in video editing are looking for high performance. However, if you don't need a high performance RAID, a 2-port card like the SeriTek/2SE2-E will do the job.

  • Help Configuring my New Mac Pro

I just purchased a new Mac Pro (early 2009 Quad Core" 2.66 (2009/Nehalem), and a second (1 TB) internal hard drive. I would like to transfer my applications, files, and profile from my Macbook Pro (early 2008 Core 2 Duo" 2.5) to the Mac Pro. I also want to install with Boot Camp a copy of Windows XP Pro (SP3) on a separate hard drive. I want the XP drive to be the 640 GB hard drive that came with the Mac Pro, and the MacOS drive to be the added 1TB hard drive. I want the Windows drive to have 4 logical partitions ( C, D, E, and F) with the C, D, and E being NTFS (so they can exceed 32GB) and, F drive being FAT (for read/write compatibility with MacOS). I've been doing a fair amount of reading both on this forum and have a tentative plan to accomplish the setup. But, a lot of what I'm planning to do is new to me. So, before executing my plan, I wanted to get some feedback. Any thoughts or comments on the steps in my plan would be much appreciated. Here are my planned steps:
    1. Turn on the new Mac Pro computer but don't transfer and applications or files - just transfer the profile. Then check to make sure that the computer is working properly.
    2. Turn off computer and install 1 TB hard drive and RAM upgrade.
    3. Turn on the computer and transfer applications and files from my Macbook Pro to the Mac Pro using Migration Assistant (located in the applications, utility folder). Connect the computers using Firewire 800 (9 pin to 9 pin cable). I currently don't have such a cable, but from what I have read the migration can be very, very slow if done using the ethernet network or a USB-2 cable. I've got about 200 GB on my Macbook Pro so I assume that the Firewire cable is the only sensible way to go.
    4. Test the system to see that the applications are working and check that the data files have been transferred.
    5. Download SuperDuper and use it to create a clone of the 640 GB drive on the new 1 TB drive. Make the 1 TB drive the boot drive by choosing it from System Preferences > Startup Disc
    6. Check and make sure the bootup from the 1 TB drive works properly.
    7. Check to make sure the EFI Boot ROM version on the Mac Pro is up to date. If it needs updating, download latest version from Apple support website and install.
    8. Check Apple support for updates to Boot Camp Assistant. Once I have the latest version open Boot Camp Assistant (in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder). Create Boot Camp partition that is the entire 640 GB hard drive.
    9. Insert the Windows XP CD and click Start Installation in Boot Camp Assistant. Select the Boot Camp partition for installation of Windows.
    10. As I begin the Windows install, I'm expecting that I will be offered at the start of the setup process an opportunity to create the 4 separate logical partitions that I want on the 640 GB hard drive. Format the hard drive with the 4 partitions.
    11. Select the partition where I want to put Windows Operating System and follow the Windows setup process to install Windows XP.
    12. Once Windows is installed, eject the Windows disc and insert to Mac OS disc. Install the Boot Camp drivers for Windows.

NTFS is read only already. You don't need anything just to access, only if you plan to write files, and NTFS won't like HFS file names if they have special characters.
XP SP2 or later, and would have to be able to transfer to new hardware. What it lacks is good multicore and memory management.
Newegg and Amazon has single system builder versions that can save but can't be used on another system. OEM (Dell, HP, etc) versions or "restore discs" won't work and aren't supported.
I said you can get by without BCA. You don't have to believe me but it is a waste to have to say everything twice. Windows 7 is perfectly capable of doing any formatting and installing without it.
Installing Windows 7 on Mac Pro is easier and different. There is a forum devoted to Boot Camp and Installing Windows.

  • How to  install OS X Tiger on new Mac Pro

Does anyone why you can´t install OS X Tiger on the new Mac Pro? I bought it recently and it came with Leopard of course but I really need to run Tiger because of many of my plug-ins for Protools costs a fourtune to upgrade...
Is it possible to do it? Workaround anybody..?

Is the hardware in the mac pro all that different than to the one shipped with Tiger???
I don't know all the differences, but iirc, the Graphics card is a big diff.
I have Tiger discs for a mac mini shipped just before 2008, would that work you think?
Can only guess, but no, I don't think it would, all Tiger disks for IntelMacs are Machine specific.
Sorry, can't help with the links, I've just read about attempts & the difficulties.

  • New Mac Pro (quad) does not shut down!

    Hey guys
I've just taken delivery of a new Mac Pro for my home music studio, and have loaded up various software such as Native Instruments Komplete, BFD3, Sympobia etc... and Logic Pro X.
In the last two days, whenever I shut down the Mac Pro, it goes to a grey screen (light grey) with the mouse pointer still visible, and then just freezes and doesn't proceed to power off.
Before I provide further information, does anyone have an idea of what might cause this behavour and anything I should be trying to resolve it?
    Cheers and thanks,
    Mike

I don't know what might be causing that but one way to find out is to set your Mac to start up and shut down in "verbose mode."
To turn on Verbose booting, at the Terminal type the following:
    sudo nvram boot-args="-v"
Disabling Verbose booting is just as easy:
    sudo nvram boot-args=
You'll see the various steps the Mac runs through to boot and to shut down. When it hangs, you'll be able to see what point it's hanging at.
BTW, did it behave this way before you loaded up all that software?

  • Cloning from new Mac Pro to older G4 laptop?

Hi - I am going to be upgrading my old Quicksilver G4 tower to a new Mac Pro (the 2.66 quad core) and was wondering if I would still be able to clone (using SuperDuper!) my system hard drive to my Apple PowerBook G4 1.25 15" which I use as my main computer when going on the road. This has been my main workflow and has worked quite nicely as I then clone back to my tower once I get back home.
Just not sure if the two systems would be able to function together using the same OS and software.
    thanks!

Since the clone is for an Intel-based computer and the G4 is a PPC, the cloned system would not even boot on the PPC. The PPC and Intel versions of Leopard are entirely separate and very different.
