New Mac Pro not really working

I just got my new Mac Pro in and I'm having some problems. I've had to do a hard reboot 3 times over the last 4 days, I get the SBBOD very frequently, and Spotlight doesn't seem to be working.
My biggest issue with spotlight now is I can't get one of my internal drives to index. It's a 500 gb seagate drive that I took out of a G5 and put right into my MP. Is that a problem? I know I can't take a startup disk from a PPC machine to an Intel machine but this is just for storage. I've downloaded Spotless and deleted all my spotlight folders and started from scratch. I indexed one drive at a time and found this one drive always hangs. I've let it run overnight now twice and it never finishes. I came in this morning and it still says indexing (won't allow me to search) and it says it has -2147483648 hours remaining and the status bar is actually showing less progress then when I left it last night, which sounds weird but I'm sure of it. Any ideas?

Have you booted from a good backup system you can use for emergencies and tried repairing your drive? If you don't have Disk Warrior (or something more than just Apple First Aid) I would.
In trying to salvage files I usually try to trash the most recent stuff added that are just temp or not needed, and delete what I have safely copied over.
Think of peeling an onion. Undo each layer. Repair the directory.
Disk Warrior has Rebuild directory, and if you hold down OPTION when you click on rebuild, it offers you choice to scavenge a drive that is more severely corrupt.
When it freezes, be sure to do a Safe Boot and insure you aren't creating new directory problems on your alternate drive. And don't boot or use your problem drive. Which is why you always want to have a FW or alternate boot drive. And if you don't, then install just OS X plus updates on it first so you do.

  • New Mac Pro Won't Work With Old Studio Display

    Hi,
Just got a new Mac Pro Desktop 8-core only to find out my old Apple Studio Display 17" won't work without a $100 adapter. We're thinking of just buying a new monitor instead. My question is will other brands now work direclty with the new Macs - or would they also need adapters? Is a DVI port the same as a DVI-D port?
    Thanks for any info...

Thanks so much for the response, Malcolm, I really appreciate it! My old monitor is an LCD, but what we decided to do is since the adapter we found (and HAD to get from Apple directly) was going to cost $99!! We went and bought a brand new Dell monitor instead for $238 - it's fully compatible with the new Mac, and it's 23" (my old one was a 17") - so all's good!
    Thanks again,
    Jacki

  • Looking to run autodesk inventor on a new mac pro* will it work?

Looking to run autodesk inventor on a new mac pro* using boot camp and windows.
Will it work or am I waiting my time?

As an alternative, though not an ideal FCS box, the Intel iMacs should be fine, and should fit into the same budget range as the MacBooks.
For serious FCP work, I wouldn't recommend an iMac, but for the purposes you've outlined, it should be acceptable, for the most part.
EDIT: My comment above is in reply to your comment about school purchases, not your original post about carrying around two laptops.

  • New Mac Pro not shipping until Feb 13 !!!?

I just ordered a new Mac Pro this morning with the default options plus a Nvidia 8800 graphics card. My order status says it will ship by Feb. 13 to avive by Feb. 14 (I used overnight shipping). I understand that making a change can delay an order a bit but wow that is quite a delay. Anyone think it will ship early? I've never ordered from the online apple store and I'm not sure what to expect. I'm hoping that they are just being very conservative, if not this is going to be a long 5 weeks of waiting
    Thanks.

I just cancelled my order - I don't want to wait up to 5 weeks for my new Mac Pro.
I re-ordered with the stock configuration and also ordered a separate Apple supplied Nvidia 8800 GT which is now on the US site for $350 - this will ship later when available. I called Apple and they checked with an engineer and told me the 8800 won't work concurrently with the stock ATI card but that it will run with two 8800.
SLI in Bootcamp would be nice but I doubt two 8800s will support it. Has anyone heard of anyone getting SLI in a Mac Pro (OSX or Bootcamp)? I'm going to try the Nvidia and ATI together because I want to run 2 monitors with an optional TV for the occasional Front Row use. I'll keep this thread updated and let everyone know if it works - I don't always trust the info from any technical support department.
Does anyone know if two GPUs (i.e. two 8800s) will give a performance boost over one card in OSX with apps like Final Cut Studio 2?

  • New Mac Pro seems really slow

I have a new Mac Pro - 8 core Two 2.26GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon "Nehalem"
I am exporting some h.264 movie files from Final Cut Pro via File>Export>Using Quicktime conversion.
    My Sequence settings are:
    1920x1080 HDTV1080i
    compressor: XDCAMEX1080p24
Should it take 15 minutes to export an h.264 480x270 that is only 2 minutes long?
Is it possible because I am using the XDCAM compressor that it is taking so long to conform to h.264?
Feel like my old Duo core iMac was faster than this.
I trashed the preferences and restarted the computer - no change
    thought - comments?

Should it take 15 minutes to export an h.264 480x270 that is only 2 minutes long?
From a GOP format of HD? Yup. That is one of the big drawbacks of the GOP formats. Very processor intensive.
YOu can set up QMASTER in the System Preferences so that Compressor will utilize all 8 processors.
    - In System Preferences at the bottom is a black splotch icon thing, that is Apple Qmaster. Click on that.
    - Select Share this computer as "Quick Cluster with services."
    - Share Compressor.
    - "Options for selected service" should be 1 instance for each of 2 processors, so if you have an Octo MacPro, set it to 4 instances.
    - Click Share...
Then when you submit from compressor, change it from "This Computer" to whatever you named your cluster. Works like gang busters...

  • HDCP in the new Mac Pro - not allowed to watch my paid for TV shows?

My new Mac Pro won't let me play back my iTunes TV Shows as my 30" Cinema Display doesn't support HDCP. iTunes' suggestion of just connecting a HDCP compliant monitor isn't even funny: Don't have one, not getting one. Is this a bug, and if so, is there any way around it? Or is Apple trying to increase their 24" sales by denying people access to their already paid for content?

    Thimic
    It's not your computer.
I also have a new MacPro and it also will not play my library of HD movies and TV. The only solution I received from Apple was to change the default play HD to SD which defeats the purpose.
What is annoying is that Apple puts no warnings on iTunes or none that I can find.
That they could not tell me if any Apple display or other make would enable me to watch HD
So I am compelled to use my credit card to reclaim all the HD purchases and if the MacPro cannot produce HD content then I I'll use them to seek recompense.
I love Apple products but I do not like the lazy or arrogant get lost behavior. Finding a solution should be on the iTunes site.
And there's should be clear information on Apple displays... which there is not... and Apple Stores simply do not know. Back to 1997 "Never heard of that sir!"
    My HP Blackbird plays HD.
    Thimic good luck.

Hard to say. You did upgrade the machine to 10.5.2 so it's possible your upgrade has malfunctioned. It could also be a hardware problem. I would insert the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer and restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended diagnostics. If any errors are reported be sure to note them down, then call AppleCare or your local Apple retailer. If no errors are reported run the extended diagnostics several times. Sometimes it takes a while for the error to occur.
If no hardware errors are reported then it may be a software related problem. In this case you should first repair the hard drive and permissions:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Now download the 10.5.2 Combo Updater and reinstall it. You should also install the Leopard Graphics Update if you haven't already.
If the above doesn't resolve your problem then you should try an Archive and Install to reinstall OS X:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Render times very slow on new Mac Pro and Premiere CC

    Hi there
I have a brand spanking new Mac Pro  (specs below) working off a G Studio r 24 TB array. Rendering anything in Premiere is taking an age (2 minutes timeline is taking 30 minutes). I am cutting 4k Sony F5 footage (XAVC). I have done tests with 1080 material and this doesn't make any difference.
I have spoken to Adobe support and reset permissions plus all the basic workarounds suggested: but there has been no improvement. I was due a call back but have not heard anything.
Can anyone suggest a solution - i have several important deadlines coming up, and can't really deal with the downtime.
I understand 3rd party apps take longer, but even with PP effects, rendering is taking way too long: especially with a super fast system like this.

  • New Mac Pro 2013: some premature doubts...

    Hi all!
The New Mac Pro seems really cool, but I have some doubts:
    1) will it have just One processor? In terms computation speed, present Mac Pro is not the best on the market: doubling it, will Of course ne interesting, but not "incredible";
    2) adopting just One proc will limit the number Of cores to the maximum amount Of a single E5 (8?): that's not that much;
    3) just 4 RAM slots? So the Max RAM would be 64 GB...
If this is the hardware, it will not be suited for massively-parrallel computation...
I think (and hope) Apple will provide a 2-core Mac Pro like nowadays!!!
    What do You think??
    Best
    H

One cpu with up to 12 cores, not two.
For now 64GB. Every time Apple rolls out a new Pro they under spec RAM (and don't change the support pages).
OWC and others are working on testing but the format docs do say that 10.9 will now support a full 128GB ($$$ for 4x32GB DIMMs)
E5's that support the higher clocked DIMMs may not be available except in labs and engineering.
10.9 does support 4x16GB (the 5,1 do not / did not, only 3x16) and that seems to be a firmware thing right now - you need to change the cpu daughter card (not happening likely) or the DIMM's firmware (maybe) or patch in the kernel (very possible and why 10.8 support for 96GB came and went).
So yes if you want 4-way / 24-48 core cpu and 256GB RAM you need to look elsewhere.
But a single cpu w/ 12 cores is more effecient, less latency, no need QuickPath or peeking or snooping or predictive memory addresses, 24MB L3 cache, and shuffling from one bank to another, from cpu A to cpu B (about 30% hit or 2nd cpu was only in some cases adding 70% to the task at hand).
Could dual AMD be using a CrossFire-X? that would make sense, yes?

  • New Mac Pro and Old G4 Speakers

Well, I go out and buy a new mac pro(not the laptop but the desktop). I try to hook up my old G4 screen and it doesn't work. I bought a new screen becasue the guys at the store told me there was no way to adapt the screen for the new computer. Well, I go to hook up my old (old being 2 years) clear plastic round speakers and they don't fit in the hole. It is so frustrating that it seems I have to buy ALL new stuff. Does anyone know of an adapter I could use so I can hook up these speakers so I don't have to go out and spend another $100 on something I already have?

  • New Mac Pro Freezing

    Hi all,
I just got the new Mac Pro and it worked fine for a couple of hours. Now it just started freezing every 20-30s. The whole thing freezes - the mouse doesn't move, nothing happens (doesn't accept any input). The weird thing is that music keeps playing fine. I can reproduce the freezing all the time by just starting to move a window.
What should I do? I've a bit ****** off cause I had to replace every single product I've bought from Apple in the last 3 years.

I had a similar early issue with my 2007 MBP. Connecting to WPA2 networks would cause a KP and crash the system. At first, both I and AppleCare thought it was a hardware issue. 3 MBPs later, the issue persisted until we realized it was an airport driver. I'm thinking this just requires a software update so I'm going to hold off until 10.5.7 or some small update before I start exchanging hardware. Fingers crossed. I repaired permissions and reset PRAM this morning so we'll see if that has any effect.

  • Rear Audio Jack not Working on New Mac Pro

    Hello All,
Here's the deal. I just pursuaded my company to buy a brand new Mac Pro to run FCP Studio 2 as a test run to see if they perform well enough to eventually replace our remaining PC's. We've had the Mac Pro for less then two weeks and I'm running into an issue that I can't resolve, and I don't want to fall on my face. The rear Audio input jack keeps failing. Meaning sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't when speakers are plugged into. The jack on the front works fine, but the rear jack doesn't appear to recognize the speakers after the computer is shut down then restarted. You have to restart the computer 2 or 3 times before the speakers start pumping out sound. Which in all honesty is extermely dissappointing to me. And if I have to bring this thing in to get serviced, my boss will not move forward with buying anymore Mac Pro's, which I'm working hard to make happen.
    Please help me out.
Thank you all for your time

    Try resetting the SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1806?viewlocale=en_US.
Also try resetting the PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379.

Migration Assistant: Problems transferring data from PC (XP SP3) to new Mac Pro 2012 - can not get Migration Assistant to work as PC will not display verfify passcode
Hello, I am having problems migrating data from my old PC running XP (SP3) to my new Mac Pro 2012 using the Migration Assistant.
    - I downloaded and installed the Windows Migration Assistant from Apple
    - My Mac recognized PC and displays passcode
    - The sasscode does not show / display on my PC
    - My Mac is then stuck in "authenticating" loop and the PC is stuck "waiting for Mac to connect."
    - Both computers are connected on same network (have connected PC on WIFI and using ethernet to Reuter)
I have looked on support site and only response I saw says to reinstall Windows Migration Assistant (which I have done)
Any ideas?  If cant get this to workare there instructions for manually bring across relevant data eg itunes music and apps, photos, picasa data etc?

Why not turn off the Windows firewall and uninstall any other firewall software you have installed?
If you are using a Norton product uninstall it and discard it. To fully unistall most Norton products you have to go to the Norton website and download a soecial program to completely get rid of it. The normal uninstall feature built into the program will not remove all of it.

  • HT2844 My front headphone jack does not work when connecting a head phone to a new mac pro desktop computer.  The sound still comes from the speakers.  Any solutions?

The front headphone jack on my new mac pro desktop computer does not transmit sound when connecting a headphone or ear buds.  The sound still comes from the speakers and is not redirected to the head phone.  The port has never worked.  Any solutions?

okay, try option-clicking on the speaker icon on the top of your screen. That should bring up a list of sound output options. including headphone. You could try messing around with Audio MIDI. It may be possible that the thing is still stuck inside the headphone jack. Careful use of a toothpick may get it unstuck. I dunno, I've never had a problem with the headphone jack. If all else fails, call Apple or take 'er in for an appointment
