Minimum build version of OS X
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2191
Apple never supports an older OS than what a system ships with and Mid-2010 ships with 10.6.4+ build which has support for ATI graphics it ships with, for the processors it uses, and DDR3.
2009 came with 10.5.7 and that was Early 2009
2008 came with 10.5.1+ and really needs more like 10.5.3 or later
10.5.0 came out 3 yrs ago. That is an eternity in Apple time for an OS and hardware.
You would need to find an Early 2009 or earlier used system to run 10.5.x.

This sounds different than with my IOS devices, since I am able to see the photos even with a connection to the Internet.
Do you mean without a connection to the internet? With a connection it's logical you would be able to see the PS.
The following is from iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ
Can photos be saved or downloaded from a shared photo stream?
Yes. Once photos are shared, anyone who can view the shared photo stream can download and keep the photos permanently.
On a device using iOS 6 or later, you can save photos to the Camera Roll. On a Mac, using iPhoto 9.4 or Aperture 3.4, you can save photos from the shared stream to your local Photo Library or any other location on your Mac. On a Windows PC, you can copy photos from a shared photo stream to any folder. On the web, photos can be downloaded directly to your computer from the detail view of each photo.
This tells me that the image files are not on the HD unless the subscriber chooses to download them.

  • HT1338 my old mac cant connect to internet and my migration assistant needs an upgrade is there any way to download to my new mac and install the upgrade on my old one so i can complete the migration process?

I just purchase a new IMac, I am trying to use migration assistant. the problem I am having is my old mac cannot connect to the internet and it needs a software update, can I download the update on my new mac and install it somehow on my old mac?

If it's a free update, search Apple's support site for it and move the dmg as you would any file. If it's a paid upgrade, no; the Mac App Store upgrades, while downloadable, can't be downloaded from a Mac which can't use them.

  • I have a mac Book that will not open DVD's of Business Presentations.  I had my hard drive taken in to the Mac Store and had a new hard drive installed.  Since then I cannot open DVD's.  What is the application that I need, and the process. Tks

I have a mac book that will not open up DVD's recorded with a presentation.  I install the disc in a HP / windows 7 and it works fine.  I had my hard drive replaced and since then I cannot open up DVD's.  Was there a application that did not get installed?  And if so what is the process.

You need DVD Player. It should be in your Applications folder. If it is in there go to System Preferences>CDs & DVDs and for "When you insert a video DVD" make sure DVD Player is selected.

  • House move + new Mac Pro = install no longer works

I recently moved across town and in the process streamlined my computers. I've migrated using migration assistant from a 2.0Ghz iMac to an 8 core Mac Pro. In the physical move I brought over my Aperture 2.0 upgrade disk, book and serial # but seem to have misplaced my 1.0 full retail version. I thought I had stuck the 1.0 serial number inside the 2.0 book but did not. *I figured that the migration assistant would be able to copy over aperture 2.1.3 and enable it for use. Sadly that wasn't the case*. Now I'm stuck with a full 2.X install on my Mac pro that is not activated for use along with all my photos.
Luckily I've kept my iMac and can use Aperture on it.
*Does anyone know how I can get my 1.X enabling serial number out of a 2.X upgrade install so that I can re-activate 2.X on my Mac Pro?* Short of that I'm looking at buying a copy of 1.X on ebay.....
+I should add, I am not asking for serial numbers and please DO NOT POST them in this thread.+
Message was edited by: Joseph Martin3

Just for future reference - I couldn't find my Final Cut Studio v1 serial number, but I had my email receipt from when I ordered it. I called up Apple support, went down the path for software and managed to get someone in licensing that when I faxed over my invoice and photocopy of my disk, generated me a new v1 serial number.
So if push comes to shove, if you can prove ownership/purchase Apple will provide a replacement serial number.

  • I bought a new mac with software installed and my username will not update from another account?

I recently bought an new power mac with Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro Installed.
When I updated to the new OS X operating system, they need to be updated as well. And will no longer work.
But it says it is on another account. Not sure what account. How do I find out what account they are on? How or can I do I move them into my other account?
The Power Mac is registered to the account I am logged in on.

Before buying a second-hand computer, you should have run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, whichever is applicable.
The first thing to do after buying the computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. Changes made by Apple over the years have made this seemingly straightforward task very complex.
How you go about it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It's unsafe, and may be unlawful, to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
    1. If you don't own another Mac
    a. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine is very old and has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
    b. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for a MacBook Air. You should have received the media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To start up from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then restart the computer and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
    c. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should start up in Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    d. Some 2010-2011 models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you can't reinstall 10.6 even from the original media, and Internet Recovery will not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
    2. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to prepare a USB device, then start up the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can start from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
    3. Partition and install OS X
    a. If you see a lock screen when trying to start up from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
    b. Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the  Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
    c. An unusual problem may arise if all the following conditions apply:
OS X 10.7 or later was installed by the previous owner
The startup volume was encrypted with FileVault
You're booted in Recovery mode (that is, not from a 10.6 installation disc)
In that case, you won't be able to unlock the volume or partition the drive without the FileVault password. Ask for guidance or see this discussion.
    d. After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically restart into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
    e. Run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
    4. Other issues
    a. If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
    b. If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
    c. When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an iCloud account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information. The setup limit doesn't apply to Apple ID accounts used for other services, such as the iTunes and Mac App Stores, or iMessage. You can create as many of those accounts as you like.

  • I want to migrate to new Mac. How do I also Restore the partition with old Snow Leopard?

I will install a second internal HD first, and use Time Machine Restore to it with the Migration Assistant on the new Mac's Mountain Lion.
Then I will erase the preinstalled Mountain Lion internal HD, and:
How do I now proceed to Restore to an internal partition on the new Mac, my (still) left Time Machine copy of Snow Leopard,( just a spare system partition, also for Power PC Apps)?
If I install a new Snow Leopard first from DVD and then tries the Migration Assistant in it, can it us a Mountain Lion Time Machine backup of the Snow Leopard partition? Or can Mountain Lion Migration Assistant be used for Restoring and Migrating Snow Leopard.
I do not have a Snow Leopard Time Machine backup copy of the partition left. Otherwise I could have taken that on a new installed Snow Leopard.
Thankful for all ideas, also I understand that HD Restore fully on the whole partition without using Migration Assistant will not work.
    Another question:
I hope that I can use my new Mac with the old Mac OS X licenses and transfer the new preinstalled Mac OS Mountain Lion license to the old Mac, before giving it away?
    Thanks,
    /groundliner

    Thanks!
I'm not familiar with the issue of what Mac OS new Macs manages. That puts things in another perspective. I have Lion on a fast 8 GB USB Stick, can I not boot from that either? Of Course, I may be able to put the Mountain Lion Installer on the stick, instead. It could not upgrade the stick to Mountain Lion due to not having enough space for that. But I maybe could fix that. Just wondering - I have several hard disks around, I could try to put the preinstalled Mountain Lion OS version on one of those. Best copying method?
I did not know that transfer of OS Mountain Lion was not allowed. Leopard license document mentions transfer of hardware and software to another person. So I thought the Mac App Store license was similar - bought for and on just this old iMac, that it also could be transferred to another person. Which would solve the problem for my friend who should have it!
I keep planning, but I think running old Power PC Apps maybe was no big deal.

  • How do I burn a DVD. I do not have iDVD, on my new Mac

I have purchased a new Mac (last one was Windows based) I am trying to burn a holiday DVD.  I have made the DVD in iMovies, I have purchased an Apple disc burner, Burnt a DVD but the player can not see it - I have been told it is in the wrong format to burn straight from iMovie
I have now install miDVD but can not drag the film into it as it says it can not read the content.  Would be greatfull for any help
    Thanks

    Hi
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.
    Free solutions:
Burn - a free alternative from Internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
Gives a fairly good resulting Video-DVD
Free DVD Creator.app - free from Apple Store
(very simple - Quality ?? not sure - looked problematic reg. Interlacing)

  • Trying to Time Machine from Leopard to new mac Snow L

I just got a new MacBook Pro 10.6.3 and am trying to restore via Time Machine from my current 10.5.8. I just waited 2 hours "Copying Volumes" but nothing happened.
I must be missing something simple but I can't find it.
    thanks
    brian

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
If you mean you're doing a full system restore, that's not going to work. A new Mac that came with Snow Leopard cannot run Leopard.
You'll need to boot up from the Snow Leopard Install disc that came with your new Mac. Select your language, then from the menubar, select Utilities, then +Disk Utility+ and reformat your internal HD. See the yellow box in #1 of [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html]. Use the GUID *Partition Map Scheme* and +Mac OS Extended+ Format. That will only take a few moments.
Then quit Disk Utility and install OSX.
When your Mac restarts, it will be just like it came from the factory. Use +Setup Assistant+ to transfer your data from your old Mac or it's backups, per [Setting up a new Mac from an old one or its backups|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Setup.html].
