New Mac Slowing Down- PLZ HELP

Hey guys-
After having a bad experience with windoze, I decided to move to Mac- 3 weeks ago i bought a 13in 128gb hdd macbook air. It contains 8gb ram, but somehow, my laptop is slowing down to the speed of my 2007 Dell laptop! It has a core 2 duo and i have an i7- keep in mind that the thing has no tweaks installed, just apps downloaded from the 'net and appstore stuff. my downloaded apps were stuff like steam, apps to convert dmg's to iso images, etc. Anyway, i'm really hoping I can get the most out of the laptop, and not have it feel like i'm using an old laptop! Thanks in advance...

Memorykeeper is sold by the same company that sells some of the worst trash known to plague Macs. It is capable of doing absolutely nothing beneficial.
Flux by The Escapers Consultancy is Web design software, but if you mean f.lux or similar system hacks it could certainly be a factor.
Onyx can do nothing that cannot be accomplished more safely and easily by using OS X's built-in resources.
I don't know what intellihide is.
... should i remove all tweaks or should i reinstall os?
Generally speaking if you want your Mac to run at peak efficiency you should avoid all such junk. It is not possible to make a Mac or its operating system perform any faster than they were engineered to perform. It is only possible to slow it down and make it unmanageable or useless by installing third party tools that claim the ability to speed it up or keep it "clean".
Since you recently moved to Macs after having become inured to a Windows PC's constant need for care and feeding, you must endeavor to purge your mind of those preconceptions. Macs are a different world. They are designed to be used; to be beaten on and driven hard every day, not pampered and constantly fussed over. That's what I have been doing with mine for decades. Isn't that why you bought yours?
Ignore the plaintive cries of former Windows developers desperately trying to convince you their tweaks and hacks are still relevant. Keep your Mac updated with software updates from Apple. That's all you need to do.

  • Open quicktime file to play movie and mac hangs and leaves artifacts (screen smear) on screen mac slows down

I recently completed a clean install of snow leopard and added some RAM to my MAC
when I open a QuickTime file... my MAC slows down, I get the rainbow pin wheel and screens and menus that I try to access start to "smear"... leave behind artifacts
ultimately the movies flutter and don't play properly, and I have to restart my MAC to reset my desktop
I suspect it may be related to my RAM because I've never had this issue previously although it only seems to occur when I use QuickTime
... also I installed "flip for mac"
I purchased the RAM from OWC
    thoughts?

The codec info should have been listed before the comma that precedes 640x360. Seems to be a bug in the recent versions of QT 7. If you have QT Pro you can still find the codec name by opening Movie Properties and checking the video format that way. Anyway, since Perian cant play it I suspect you are out of luck in MacOS x. Not all avi decompressors have been ported to OS X. It may be that the compressor is one of the old Indeo codecs and those definitely will not work in X. They will work in the Classic environment but a lot of you folks have given up on Classic. Just in case here is a link to the Indeo codecs for Classic: Indeo codecs for Classic
Have you tried playing it in VLC. If it is not an Indeo file VLC may play it.
The Mac version of WMP doesn't play avi or mpeg files -- mostly it plays wmv or asf files and not even the most recent versions of those formats.

  • HT6058 Will this new update slow down my iphone 4 even more than the last update?

Will this new update slow down my iphone 4 even more than the last update?

Thats a hard question to answer.  The iPhone 4 has older technology than newer models which can cause the device to lag.  Depending on what data and settings you have on the device, it could run slower.  I would probably make sure to constantly close apps in multitasking and possible think about restoring the device as a new device.  Make sure to backup your data prior to the restore

Select the country in which the iPhone was originally sold:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937
You'll find a link to the carrier on whose pages you can probably find contact information.
As RG said, only the carrier to which the iPhone is locked can authorize unlocking. That is the only "way out". To have an iPhone that was "factory unlocked", you would have had to purchase it that way.

  • New WRT320N - slow internet access help!

Hi, we'e just installed a new WRT320N. We have broadband access via Virgin Broadband and have a fairly new modem. When we access the internet via the router it is really slow. This is the case whether the connection is wired (our PC doesn't have wireless, so the connection is wired - ie cable between router and modem and then cable between router and PC) or wireless (ie PC with wireless n card). If I unplug both and reboot, connection is initially fast and then slows down again.
If I connect the computer directly to the modem, the speed of internet access is fine. So there is nothing wrong with broadband generally, it is definitely something to do with the Linksys router and possibly the way it is communicating with the modem.
The one thing I've noticed is that when connected directly via modem without the router, speed is 100 mbps whereas when connected with Linksys router, speed is 1.0 Gbps.
Help! Thinking of giving up and returning the Linksys router and going with the one Virgin recommend (Netgear) but we'd rather not.
Virgin tech guys said we might need Linksys firmware update?
Anyone got any ideas? We're not v techie here and clueless .... Thanks v much!

100Mbps is the maximum supported on a Virgin modem, whereas your "gigabit" router is capable of outputting at 1Gbps or 1000Mbps. This is normal and has no bearing on your issue.
Go into the router config page at 192.168.1.1, change the MTU size to 1350, reboot both modem and router and see if that makes any difference.
Also check what version of firmware you have, it will tell you in the config (top right hand corner usually)
The latest available here is: Ver.1.0.03 build 10

    Hi Ray Land,
We can help narrow down the cause.  What operating system are you using on your new Mac Mini?
If you are running the Mountain Lion OS, you can download the latest driver here.  An important note is that the current print queue must be deleted before installing the new driver.  This will ensure proper communication.
If this doesn't work or you need further assistance, please contact us here.

  • New IMAC slowing down with spinning ball

I've had my MAC for about 3 weeks (I switched from a PC). Today it started slowing down. First whe n I tried to print something and then when I was in Excel (Office for MAC 2004). Both times it didn't do anything for a minute and then the clorful spinning ball thing appeared. About a minute later it finished what I was doing (saving a template file).
I looked at the system memory and I have 2GB of RAM with an OK status. I have two printers - one USB attached to my MAC and the other on another computer (Windows) that I am sharing. This was not a problem before, so I don't expect this to be the issue, but I figured I'd mention it anyway.
    I haven't bought virus software yet - perhaps I have a virus?
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

Macs don't get viruses, so you can rule that out. Do you have any shared drives or network connections? Something there could be slowing things down. If you do have some connections, try disconnecting them and see if that speeds up your access. When was the last time you rebooted the machine? You could always try that.
There is a utility in applications\utilities called "Activity Monitor". You could look there to see if anything is hogging the memory or processor. Have you installed anything recently?

  • DT files dropped into Finder and whole Mac slowing down

Hi, I don't really know where to start my thread, so apologies if this is not the right place. My problem is that my Mac has slowed right down suddenly and my various DT files will not reappear (except for a few) when I restart. In fact, the DT is empty until I click at random, after which some of them appear. This all started when I did something that was probably unwise. I wanted to make a copy of my Photo Library for my external drive, so I created a file on the DT to put them in but this operation (about 5000 pictures) never really finished and I can see that these photos are stuck in some kind of DT limbo. What I may have done is drop them into the HD by mistake while I was dragging them to the external disk (?). I think that is what has bunged everything up but I have no idea what to do. I am trying to delete them within Finder but each time I do this I get a message for each individual file saying that the file is being used in another application and that deleting it might damage the other application. I can delete them, except for a few. In any case, this means clicking another 4500 times to delete each one individually, which is a bit beyond me. If anyone can help or direct me to another post, I'll re-post there.

Good! Available 194GB You are nowhere near the 10% mark.
Ok.. since things are slowing down... try booting from your install disk and run the Disk Utility app to check the startup disk for errors. You will need your install disk to do this.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
*"like when I first turn it on, it takes forever to go to the users box."*
Open System Preferences/Accounts and select the Login Items tab.
If there are any applications listed there, delete them.
And go to ~/Library/Startup Items. If there are any files in the Startup Items folder, delete those also.
And see if deleting this file helps.
    com.apple.loginwindow.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file to the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.

  • Entire Mac slows down every day, especially if more than one user logged in

Mac runs fine at the start of each day (after turning it on), but slows down by evening. iPhoto is typically at a crawl at that point, and I can't have more than one user logged in at a time, or the whole system takes forever to do anything. I've restarted, repaired disk, repaired disk permissions, run Cocktail, checked for viruses (VirusBarrier). It's easy to restore normal speed with these moves, but same problem every day. I have 24 GB left on this hard drive--is that too little?
Should I try erasing hard drive and restoring from Time Machine? Should I reload Mac OS X from discs?
    Advice much appreciated. Thanks.

    you do the math
    this will help:
Your Mac needs adequate hard drive space to operate normally. How full can a drive be before it's too full? There is no hard and fast rule that says “X” amount or “%” of free drive space is needed. A low amount of RAM requires more drive space for Virtual Memory’s swap files.
Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space are discussed in this link
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/lackofram.html
Here’s some general guidelines for minimum hard drive free space:
    1. As a general rule, your available space should be 5GB as an absolute minimum as it generally requires that much free space to perform an Archive and Install of Mac OS X and still preserve some free space for VM swap files.
    2. Some say that your hard drive should have at least 5% of it's capacity available for use. Still others say 10% to 15%. If you routinely process complex graphics and videos, even more space is required.
Look at these links about freeing up more space.

  • Intel Mac Slowing Down Post Leopard Install!

Please help! Recently I installed Leopard in my new iMac 20 inch 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. As of late, I have noticed significant slow down in my computer's performance. I'm starting to see a lot the rainbow swirls and I can't do anything for about 5 minutes at a time during normal use. Anyone also affected?

My Power settings have the HD spinning down every 10 mins after inactivity, but it speeds up in an instant. You don't even notice it. I doubt your slow downs are due to this. I did an Erase and Install when I installed Leopard and it has been completely smooth and very fast. You should do an erase and reinstall with no extra apps or peripherals. If it is slow then, just using bundled apple software, then it is fair to say you have a problem of some sort and should call apple. Make sure you do an erase and reinstall and repair permissions and reset PRAM and the system before you call apple, because you'll wait on the phone an hour just to be told to do those things before they'll speak to you about other possible solutions!

  • URGENT!- ibook slowing down, NEED HELP BADLY

    Good day.
When I bought my ibook, i upgraded the RAM of this right away. i added a 512MB RAM. I was happy with the way it was performing. After a few months, i decided to buy an externat 40GB hard drive because i found the internal hard drive too small and love downloading song and shows over the internet. after a few months, i noticed that my ibook slowed down. before, the "beachball " would seldom appear. now it appears alot. i just noticed that my ibook has really slowed down. i admit, i download a lot. but all these downloads go straight to the external hard drive. the files that i save in the internal hard drive are only excel, word, and pwerpoint files. very small. anyone can help me? is there something that i can use to speed up my ibooks performance? what should i do? is there such a thing as defragment (just like the one of a pc).

    Hi Michaelgnm,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Try verifying and repairing permissions (Knowledge Base Document #106712 on Troubleshooting permissions issues in Mac OS X). Do you notice you slow during certain times. An example would be working an file from your external hard or using iPhoto. How much hard drive space do you have on your internal hard drive? You may want try deleting programs that you don't use (on my iBook I don't use Garage Band, iDVD, etc). Maybe freeing up some space can help speed things up.
A great program to show you exactly what is on your computer is WhatSize.
If you are going to use WhatSize to delete any files/programs/applications, please be careful and make sure you know exactly what you are deleting and if there are any repercussions. WhatSize will show you files that you would not normally see; they are referred to as "invisible files". These invisible files are hidden from the users view because they would clutter the desktop and they hold vital information that if corrupted or deleted may cause problems. Please make sure you know what you are doing!
Have you deleted files that you don't use; like for my iBook, GarageBand. I use GarageBand on my iMac because it is much easier and faster, so I deleted it on my iBook. Have you tried the "erase install method"? The reason for doing this is because Mac OS X installs all the necessary fonts, languages, drivers, etc that people all over the world my need, by default. This tends to take up some room that you might want to get rid of (make sure first what you don't need and need). You erase and install your system software (Knowledge Base Document 301270 About Install Options w/ Mac OS X 10.4), and when installing, do a custom install. This way you can install the languages, drivers, and applications you want. The same technique can be done with iLife.
Do you using any "pro" applications (Adobe Photo CS, Aperture, etc)? You may want to try using a program like OnyX to run some maintenance scripts.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon

  • New Mac user looking for help with Finder, Preview, Keyboard, & Dock

So about a month ago I switched over from a lifelong Windows user to a brand new MacBook Pro, and while I am adjusting pretty well, there are still some things that I haven't quite figured out.
First up on the list is Finder! I like my files to be arranged just like how they are in Windows Explorer--folders first alphabetically, then files alphabetically. I've managed to acquire this setting by messing around with the "clean up by" and "arrange by" functions but I don't really know the specific combination. Most of the time these preferences are saved and set as the defaults under "View Options" but every once in a while it resets and I have to tinker around with the settings all over again. Does anyone know of a way to fix this? It's only happened twice so far, but I'd rather not have it happen again. Also, occasionally when I delete an item, there is a blank space left where the icon was instead of all the files following it bumping up a space. Any quick fixes for this bug?
Next up is Preview. Again, I like the Windows Way and I like to be able to browse between the files in a folder while using Preview/Windows Photo Viewer. I know that there is a way to browse between files if you select the whole folder and stick it in Preview, but is there a way to achieve the same result without having to do that? An app or "extension" of some sort that adds arrows in to browse between photos? I've had no luck finding anything other than the aforementioned option. Is there a good free alternative to Preview that will function similarly with the browse between photos option?
One of my favorite things about my new Mac is the backlit keyboard function. My old laptop didn't have it and as someone who is online more often at night it is super helpful. But is there a way to turn it off during the day/in bright settings? A way to put it on a timer? In System Preferences I selected the option "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light", which I assumed to mean would have the keyboard NOT very bright when there IS light, but it continues to light up just the same. Any apps or extensions to help with this one?
And finally, the dock! This question is more about aesthetics than functionality but help is appreciated all the same. Currently, my dock looks like this: http://i42.tinypic.com/35ktxlz.png It is rather opaque and the indicator lights can barely be seen. However, in a lot of tutorial videos I've been watching, many people have docks that look like this: http://i.i.cbsi.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim/2011/07/19/Lion_LaunchPad.png It is a darker shade of gray, the divider is dashed rather than a straight line, and the indicator lights are clearly visible. Does anybody know how to get this look for the dock? I've looked in the dock preferences but there's not really anything in there other than magnification/size/effects.
That about sums things up! I'm sorry if any of these seem like "silly" questions but they are all things I have been unable to find answers for. Any and all tips, tricks, and help is appreciated! Thanks in advance for all your help!!

congratulations on coming over from the dark side.
Seems like you are interested in column view, which would show you the hierarchy of folders and files:  Column View in Mac OS X Mountain Lion - For Dummies Not sure what's going on if your finder settings don't stay put. May be a corrupted preferences file, which is easy to fix, but is perhaps a topic for another discussion.
What I'd suggest is to have an open mind and try to see what the mac can do, rather than force it to look like your windows machine. I mean, if you just want it to look like windows, then why bother switching? If you give it a little time, you'll start to appreciate the mac way of doing things, and see how it is infinitely more awesome, powerful, creative, intuitive, and better designed (and the software way better written)  than what you left behind. But that's your call.
There are some threads on this forum with complaints about the backlight. Keyboard backlight settings query...: Apple Support Communities  Evidently it depends on the angle of the screen and the light sensor relative to the light. Some suggest that a SMC reset may help: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)  This is not an issue for me, I just adjust the brightness with the keyboard buttons if I want. Real men shift their own gears, drink their coffee black, and adjust their own keyboard brightness. I am not aware of any software to exert more control over this feature but a search of macupdate  Download Apple Mac Software & iPhone Software : MacUpdate may help. I mean, it's up to you what is important. I can waste a lot of time playing around with the GUI and with unnecessary software, or I can just get my work (and play) done.
You might prefer the no-glass dock, that removes the shelf, and makes the indicator lights like more discrete orbs. You can do this with the terminal. Using the terminal is also, perhaps, a topic for another discussion.I like the 2D dock much better. If you want I'll give you some directions for how to do it. Otherwise, here's a reference: 2D Dock - MacRumors Forums

  • I am having trouble with my new Mac....Help please

I just got a new Mac G4 from my neighbor, who happens to be older, so the computer is still in great condition. The only problem is, he doesn't remember the login password! So I can start the computer, but I can't actually login. And I've tried to put the Panther reboot disc in and the restart it, but it doesn't do anything. None of the discs will even try to load when I put them in to restart the computer. Its not like the HP computer I have, whereas if I put the reboot disc in it actually works.
This is my first Mac computer and I'm not really familiar with them that much, so if some one could point me in the right direction, other than taking it to an actual retailer and having to pay them a bundle of money to fix it, I would greatly appreciate it.

  • Having trouble using a Samsung LCD HDTV with my new mac mini...help?!

I have a brand new mac mini running snow leopard. I am trying to use a samsung HDTV (1080i). I've got the display connected and it is working but the font on the windows is not very crisp at all...it is actually hard to read. I've adjusted the resolution in my settings to all the different options. When I use the 720p option the font gets a little better but the windows are HUGE, when I use 1080i the windows shrink to the correct size but the font gets worse. Anyone have any ideas?

Be sure to designate the HDMI input on the Samsung TV as a 'computer' source. This seems to help how it presents the image on the TV. The other thing to adjust is the font smoothing settings, via System Preferences > Appearance.
