New mac user - iphoto trouble - original doc not found

hey all,
i just got my first macbook a few days ago. things are going pretty good except for an iphoto error.
when i try to import my library i get an error to the effect of "can not upload original doc not found"....it wants me to find the picture, which i can, and click it, which then will import it....this works but i would have to do this 2,000 times to import my whole library
i should note i do not want to copy the photos in iphoto....i just want it to point to my originals...
also i did succesfully upload them all once....but then i wiped them out....so this is my second time...it worked the first time....
???????

When you run a referenced library iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. It will create an alias to the Original file, a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version.
What's happened here is that the alias has lost contact with it's Linked File. Have you made any changes to the path the that file? Renamed or moved a folder?
Frankly, unless you are using wo different photo managers, I strongly recommend against running a referenced library - even more so for an inexperienced Mac user.
1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about finding the files: There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Your choice, obviously, but best to be aware of the pitfalls.
Regards

  • New mac user, iPhoto keeps crashing

Have only had our macbook air about 1 month. We went to a one on one for iphoto yesterday and installed a lot of our old photos on to the mac in iphoto(~5000 pics). When we came home and started doing things with the pics, iphoto keeps crashing. Usually within 10 seconds. Have read thru some of the discussions and tried a couple of the tips. It still crashes.

  • *New Mac User* In love but mail not sending grrrrr.....

I am sure this is a common problem for Newbies like to me. Could someone please walk me through the problem I am having with the following error message:
Sending the message content to the server failed.
Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be delivered.
    Sending from: ***** <*****@mac.com>
I have tried switching outgoing port to 587...read that somewhere but still no luck..any suggestions?
    Thanks alot :o)

Do you have an ISP account as well as the mobileme one? If so is that working?
I have to set the outgoing server for my mobileme account to be my regular ISP server.
    Change this in Mail/Preferences/accounts.
I have never changed port numbers.
    Good luck

I have not idea how you do it with Picasa but with iPhoto you either export the photos to a desktop folder and upload from there or burns that folder to CD - or from the upload window use the media browser in the lower left hand corner of the upload windows - media ==> photos ==> iPhoto

  • Ilife 11 does it include idvd if not how do i get it? I'm a new mac user just got mac book pro

just got macbook pro new mac user, does ilife include idvd? if not how can i get it???

Boxed sets of iLife'11 include iDVD.
New macs shipping with Lion do not.  The only iLife components included are iPhoto, iMovie, and Garageband.
    Complain to Apple here:

some people have gotten iDVD that way.....
Or find a boxed set of iLife'11 or iLife'09 and use "custom install" to install iDVD only, then run software update.

Normally, you just connect the monitor to the MacBook using a VGA adaptor that you can buy from an Apple Store.  Now try System Preferences > Displays > Detect Displays.  You should now be able to select a display mode for the monitor.  If it still doesn't work, then I'd check that everything is properly connected.  I've had problems with colours disappearing due to a faulty connection in the VGA adaptor.

  • Hello everyone. As a new Mac user, I would really like to know the easiest way to move my music files from my old PC to my MacBook? Do I move only the files, the entire iTunes and how? I have a lot of music so it is not a solution with iPod/iPhone.

Your best option is to post this in the iTunes forum.

  • I'm a new mac user. My photos transferred over from PC w/Adobe Elements to Imac with IPhoto and they're a complete disorganized mess!!!!! HELP!

I'm a new mac user. I just had my 8,000  photos that I managed on my old PC using Elements transferred to new Mac. Now half my photos are completely disorganized and jumbled together out of order in one big Iphoto album, when they used to be arranged in folders by date. I could see this taking hours and hours of reviewing and organizing, picture by picture.
What is the most expedient solution to this problem? I'm open to using Iphoto, Aperture, and perhaps even Lightroom to organize my pics but would like to avoid Elements since I read new organizers stink.
P.S.  I would love a 'Sort' function by date to keep them in order, (much more useful to me than categorizing by faces and places), however I can't seem to find a program that offers this, which makes no sense to me.
    Thanks,
    Angela

View Menu -> Sort Photos -> By Date?
If you want to duplicate your Folder Tree in iPhoto:
Start at the bottom of the hierarchy and drag a folder of images to the Album Heading in iPhoto. The pics will be imported and an Album of the same name created.
You can then create the Enclosing Folders in the iPhoto Window (File -> New Folder) and drag the Album to it. Folders can contain other Folders (Nested Folders) and Albums.
However, is your folder system date based? Then this form of organisation is a bit pointless in iPhoto when Smart Albums or the Calendar tool (Click on the wee magnifying glass in the Search Box) mean you can find the photos taken on any day, month or year at a click. With Smart Albums it's easy to find photos from specific range - say, June 3 to August 25, 2009 etc.
If your folder system is theme based - Xmas pics, Birthday pics etc, then you'll find Keywords are much more flexible, and can be used in conjunction with other criteria for making Smart Albums and searches.

  • IPhoto lost after leopard installation- new Mac user needs your help!!

First, let me state: BRAND NEW MAC USER- BEWARE!
Just got a new mac for Christmas (refurbished). It came with iPhoto. My first call was to technical support about issues installing Leopard. After we resolved those problems, iPhoto was gone (as well as several other less essential things like checkers, etc). Since I installed Leopard, do I now need to repurchase iLife or iPhoto? iPhoto was the real reason we bought the system- I'm dying to use it but it has vanished. I know so many people have posted questions about similar issues but they all seemed to have existing libraries that aren't working correctly. So forgive me if this is a repeat questions but I'd really appreciate the help. Take pity on a very new and very lost user... Thank you!

You need to re-install iPhoto from the system restore disks that came with your Mac. Choose to install the bundled applications only.

  • G4 won't boot up for new Mac user

Hi guys. Brand new to Apple computers as I got a "defective" G4 from my neighbor. He was going to throw it away but I told him I would try to fix it first.
When I power it up, it makes a musical "greeting" power up sound and the monitor goes from dark black (as in "off") to a lighter gray, and then a folder appears in the middle of the screen alternating between a face and a question mark.
Does anyone know what is wrong with this computer so that I can repair it for future use? I am guessing a hard drive malfunction, but do not know for sure. And is it worth fixing? FYI - I do not have any software for this system.
Thanks for any help you can provide!
    -Mark

A 160g hard drive would run you about $70, while OS X would run about $120.
It would be great to borrow a copy of the os installation disk and boot from it to see if the computer has further problems. Do you know any other mac users? It would also allow you to see how much ram is in the machine (OS X likes ram) and that may be a further expense if you need more.
What are you going to use the machine for? That's the main question as to how much you should spend to fix the machine up. I don't know if it would be fast enough for you as an everyday computer, but internet use, word processing, ITunes, IPhoto would all work just fine. You won't be doing any gaming or heavy duty video processing.
I'd talk to them at the Apple Store, explain the situation, maybe they might be able to help given the situation. They've got a chance here to nab a new mac user, I'd think that may help your case.

  • New mac user - organising photos

    hello
I am a new mac user comingfrom Windows
In windows i organised my photos into folders such asholidays, cars etc. Within a folder i would then have other folders i.e usa,oz. How can i do something simular in iphoto, I cant seem to put an albumwithin an album
    thanks
    Dave

Albums are individual items and not dynamically linked to any event or events that they were created from. If you want an album that is dynamically linked to one or more events create a smart album with the criteria "Event is XXXX". Then any photo added to that event will show up in the smart album.
To add a keyword to a photos select the photos and type Command+A to bring up the keyword pane:
Then click on an existing keyword button to add it to the photo.  The button will turn blue when it's been assigned to the photo.  If you want to create a new keyword click on the Edit Keywords button.
There is no print screen button.  You'll need to take a screenshot of the screen.  Open the utility named Grab and use the Capture menu to make your selection.  There are system wide key combinations that you can use to make a screenshot, full or partial. Open you System/Keyboard/Keyboard Shortcuts pane, click on Screenshots and get the keystroke you need for a full screen or partial screen capture.

  • New Mac user with iSight Problem

I have a MacBook Pro 17". I can't seem to get the built in iSight camera to work in iChat. I've tried the camera using Photobooth and iMovieHD and both of those allowed me to use the camera but when I try to use the camera in iChat...even just to see the video preview screen it tells me that my computer does not support video conferencing. Any thoughts? I'm a brand new Mac user so I'm not familiar with any of this software or hardware. Thanks.

  • A new mac user

At the risk of sounding lame, how do I download Pages for mac mini 10.6.7? I need to use Pages in order to work on Microsoft docs. I have been around the world with this problem. I reinstalled the DVD's, thinking I did not do it correctly the first time. I tried downloading for the Mac Store with no success.....again, I am a new mac user and have recently purchased the mini. Any assistance would be appreciated.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
If you got a trial version of iWork with Pages with your new mini, you should probably delete it. A simple but efficient way is to download the free app removal app AppCleaner; http://www.freemacsoft.net/AppCleaner/ Then just drag & drop the Pages app onto AppCleaner. AppCleaner will round up all of Pages auxiliary files and present them all for your approval for sending them to the Trash. With some Apple Apps you are asked to authorize the removal with an Administrator's password. After you have deleted Pages, empty the Trash and restart your Mac. Pages should now be available to buy in the Mac App Store.
If you do not have a trial version of iWork installed what was your previous issue with downloading Pages trough the Mac App Store?
