New Mac User: iTunes Downloading Songs

Since you can only download songs once, how come there is an option to "check for available downloads"?

But if I have a song that I pull of a backup that I made (a file backup) that's now on an external hard drive -- if I copy that to iTunes, will it recognize it that it's a file I did purchase a while ago
The account info it was purchased with is embedded in the song file.
If the computer is authorized for that account, it will play.
If the song does not have DRM (file kind is M4A) the computer does not even need authorization.

I just recently purchased a new iMac for my home computer after the Dell Laptop I had crashed. I am new to the Mac community and just getting my feet wet in the whole thing. I need help regarding iTunes. All of the songs for my iTunes were on my old computer. Of course, I didn't back them up because who thinks to do that. The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

New Mac User - help transferring songs

Hi,
I have just made the switch from PC to Mac. Scary but happy. I have my old PC hard drive plugged into my new MacBook. I transferred the entire folder called My Music onto my new laptop.
I opened iTunes and it checked for music to import. And all of my 1700+ songs and videos seemed to have been moved over.
But how come the playlists aren't there? Did I do something wrong? And also, there is a strange Playlist on the right that was there before I added my old songs. Someone named Laura?? IS that just a default thingh? My laptop is brand new so who's music library do I have??
I'm so confused - I don't want to connect my iPod until I'm posititve that my songs and playlists will be there.

There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and a different iTunes. If it is set to automatically update you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No*. You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys, (on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box: Managing Your Songs Manually

New Mac User: iTunes Auth with multiple user accounts

With a Mac with multiple user accounts, does EACH user account need to have iTunes authorized, or is iTunes authorized for an entire mac machine?

So then I assume that iTunes will know then if each of the computer's user accounts has a different iTunes account?
When you authorize an iTunes account on your computer, the authorization info is stored in \Users\Shared\. When you run iTunes, it looks there to see if it can play purchases. The purchase account info is embedded into each purchased file.

HELP!~ new mac user with MAJOR external hard drive/iTunes problems

I hope you can help me out. I just got my new Powerbook Pro 2.0. It is really nice, but I am having a **** of a time with iTunes. I had an old Sony Viao and my friend turned me on to mac. So here I am, new computer and new 80G iPod. I have 120G of music on my external hard drive that played music right from the HD on my Vaio with no problems (until I upgraded to iT7.0, then the music ran choppy, but thats another issue). No, thinking that the Mac and iTunes will work perfectly together, I plugged in my External HD, turned on all the equipment, the mac finds the HD and I can see the music. Good. So, I change the location on the preferences to find the music on the ExHD and nothing. Then, I read all the forums and all and try EVERYTHING, moving the .xml file to the dektop, restarting iTunes, changing the location again, NOTHING works. I am about as frustrated as I can be. With over 26,000 songs that I cannot listen to.... I am about to regret this discision to get the mac. Any ideas? I also tried copy the files in the iTunes folder on the mac to the folder on the ExHD, but i don't know how on mac (there is no copy and paste command when you right click the mouse). I know my frustration is because I am new and dont know all the tricks yet.
I wish I could just call my buddy, but I am in Afghansitan fighting the taliban and he is in Hawaii. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Select your ext HD and do a key board command - CMD+I (Get Info - File Menu). Under the Ownership & Permissions tab - do you have read and write access? If not give yourself that access. You may be prompted for your admin password.
If your ext HD is the same one you used with the Vaio then I am thinking your ext HD is formated as a FAT32 and not a NTFS. Mac can read NTFS but not write to a NTFS format disk. If it is FAT32 then Mac can read and write. If it is a HFS+ format (Mac format) then there is no issue of read and write unless the disk is locked.
To copy files from one HD to anorther on a Mac - all you need to do is select and drag to the new location.
Check the Help Menu's of iTunes and the Finder. There is wealth of info built into your Mac OSX.

I am a new mac user coming from Windows
In windows i organised my photos into folders such as holidays, cars etc. Within a folder i would then have other folders i.e usa, oz. How can i do something simular in iphoto, I cant seem to put an album within an album
I have some .avi videos. I have downloaded VLC player for mac. How can i set this to the default player for this type of file as when i click on the file it tries to open quicktime. Files do play fine if opened from within VLC.
How can I copy my itunes playlists from my windows computer to my mac. I tried to copy over an exported playlist file but could not "see" it on my stick when plugged into my mac.
I have also have downloaded msn messenger and the vlc player from the web. I have managed to put the application icons in the dock but i still have a white box shaped icon in the top right of the desktop. How can i get rid of this and still run the applications??

You might be more interested in Adobe Elements or something else.
iPhoto treats application and media library folders as "package" which hides the folder and file structure inside - Get Info on any package to "show contents" but I don't know how much customizing you can do. Originals, modified copies, your photo library can and will grow like a relational database.

How can I get EVERY music file on my iPod onto my new Mac, not just the songs purchased off of the iTunes store?

So I've got an iPod classic with songs on it from the iTunes store, from CDs of my own, from free online playlists, etc. and when I plug it into my new Mac laptop the only songs that show up on iTunes are the ones I actually purchased in the iTunes store with my old computer (not a Mac). How can I copy ALL the music on my iPod onto my new Mac?

Itunes library locked!!!! new mac user please help!!!!!!

i just got a new macbook pro.. i was transferring my music from an external hardrive to the itunes library, i have a lot of music, itunes stopped working so i forced it quit, and now when i try to open itunes i get this message that the itunes folder is locked or in a locked disk and i don't have permission to access it... What can i do??? im a new mac user.... please help!!!

You could try changing the permissions of the file/folder where the iTunes library is stored

Find where the library is probably within the Music folder of your users home folder. Right click it and then Get Info
Go to the the Sharing and Permissions section at the bottom and make sure your user has rear write permissions. If not click the padlock change it, click the gear wheel and then apply to enclosing items, and OK.
I think that worked for me last time this happened...although I have now just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and the problem has just re occured and it has not worked this time. Maybe a re boot will help
You could also go to the Disk Utility (type Disk Utility in Spotlight) and try a repair permissions and Repair Disk

Yes 10.8.2 is the latest version of Mountain Lion. 10.7 was Lion and 10.6 was Snow Leopard.

Again, that's not a problem - if you purchase Mountain Lion through the App Store, it's been updated to 10.8.2 - and when there are other updates available, you can just download and install them as well.
Just go to the App Store and purchase and install ML. Then run Software Update (Apple menu) to see if there are any updates available for your machine. I keep my System Preferences>Software Update prefs set to check automatically -
Some people would rather check manually. No big deal, just buy it and install it.

I am a new Mac user and I bought the Pages APP and have no Idea where it is or how to use it? If I go into Iwork and click Pages it shows 3 documents that I have creates. THe only option I have is to download it. Then If I click it it opend in an app called Preview.
It is in me apps folder in Itunes. I expected it to be an app in my computer.

Pages for IOS and Pages for OSX are 2 different programs, buying one doesn't get you the other, go to the App Store (not iTunes) on your Mac and buy it.
