New mac user..possible imac problem, help please!

I've had my imac for about 3 weeks and in the last 4-5 days after waking up from sleep mode it has been lagging severly. At first it was for about 15 mins now its been going on for over 45. First of all, applications and anything I click on in them takes a very long time to open and sometimes several clicks. The rainbow ball curser seems to come up for much longer than usual. Then when I type, nothing shows and I have to click on the window to get what i typed to come up. I have plenty of room on my harddrive and 1 GB RAM that was factory installed. Being a new mac user, I really don't know what to do about it. Anyone know whats wrong or what to do?
Thanks in advance.
(sorry if there is bad typing in this post, dealing with the text lag right now)

Hello Christine:
If the logout/restart does not help, call Applecare. Rather than some of us trying to troubleshoot, the Applecare technicians will walk you through the problem identification process. Suffice to say, what you describe is definitely not normal.

  • New mac user needs imac g3 help

hi iam a new mac user.i just picked up a used snow imac g3 600mhz from a garage sale, and i was trying to figure out a couple things with it.when i turn it on it boots too mac osx 10.3.5,but the screen color is all grey, but readable.i tried too change the colors too default but it still stays grey.i know though when it boots and shuts down it will change color.from what i read it could need a firmware upgrade to fix this?or is this common with the imac series?
the only thing i could find out about it is that it needs mac 9.1 installed too do the firmware upgrade.another question is can i dual boot 9.1 and osx and be able to switch bewteen the 2? also how do i check my current firmware version on mac osx?any help would be great thanks

Hi Caddy and welcome to Apple Discussions,
how do i check my current firmware version on mac osx?any help would be great thanks
There are a couple ways to do it.
The easiest is boot the computer up and click and hold on the Apple slide down and release on "about this Mac". Click on the "more info" button. A window will open up and "hardware" will be selected. If not select it. Look down that window for "Boot ROM version".
    It should say "4.1.9 f1.
    If not go here:
    http://www.capecodgraphics.com/imac_firmware.htm
The definitive site on this problem.
and there it says one of the symptoms:
"S2 -- iMac starts up normally but with dim or strangely coloured display."
So that sounds like your problem.
another question is can i dual boot 9.1 and osx and be able to switch bewteen the 2?
Yes that will be no problem at all. !0.3.2 actually supports booting into Classic.
BTW congratulations that 600 Snow is like the Jaguar of iMac CRTs.

  • New Mac user/ minor iCal problem...

Hi, I am a new Mac user and experiencing the following problem with iCal:
when my Mac starts, the iCal icon in the dock, always displays a past date, July 18 always I think it is.
Is this a common thing or is there a way that I can change the iCal icon in the dock as to where it correctly displays the current date?

    Welcome to the Mac Scott.
I'm sorry to say that date displays on everyone's Mac until iCal is running. Once iCal is running it displays the correct date.
If you want to jump right in I believe there is a "fix" of sorts published at macosxhints: http://www.macosxhints.com
Alternatively, you could simply set iCal to start at login, then a few moments after login the date will be correct.

  • New Mac user with iSight Problem

I have a MacBook Pro 17". I can't seem to get the built in iSight camera to work in iChat. I've tried the camera using Photobooth and iMovieHD and both of those allowed me to use the camera but when I try to use the camera in iChat...even just to see the video preview screen it tells me that my computer does not support video conferencing. Any thoughts? I'm a brand new Mac user so I'm not familiar with any of this software or hardware. Thanks.

    (2) Check your broadband speed (up and down) using this site: http://www.speedtest.net/.
Other than your browser, do not have any app that use the internet running while you test.
    (3) Check (and adjust if necessary) to see that your System Preferences > QuickTime > Streaming > Streaming Speed is set to 1MB or higher.
    (4) Quit ALL applications. Then launch iChat only and see if it works for you.

  • New Mac User - x1600 Driver Support Help

I bought my first Mac yesterday afternoon after using a PC for 9 years, I was told Macs are user friendly, that they make computing easy but as of right now I am not finding that to be the case.
I am not a big gamer but I do enjoy World of Warcraft. I installed and patched the game and when I logged in I was noticing some studdering in the video when moving by either the keyboard or mouse. I figured that I just needed to tweak some settings in-game but the problem kept happening. So I decided to go ahead and update the video drivers and that is what has led me to here.
I can't find any x1600 256Mb drivers. It's as the video card is no longer supported. Now I have been reading that there are 3rd Party websites or that I have to spend more money to get Windows XP but I figure if these are the options after spending current sell price w/ AppleCare I am better to return this 18 hour old machine then have play doctor on a new rig.
    What am I missing?

    DraigCoch,
I think the last poster assumed that you were running XP (and it appears from your initial post that you are not), and running the game there.
So, I will respond to your concerns about OS X video drivers.
No, you will not find them listed on ATI's website. Apple works with the various video card manufacturers (well, the developers, anyway), and in most cases the latest versions of the OS X drivers for all the "OEM" cards Apple uses are included in OS X. When new drivers become available, they are installed along with updates to OS X.
In some cases, ATI produce a new driver, but release of that driver will wait for the next update to OS X. This delay is usually on the order of only a few weeks, however, so the short answer to your question is that you already have the latest drivers. This is one of the reasons it can be said that "Macs just work." Of course, they are still computers...
So, the problem is not with the drivers. It is either with the game (reinstall??), or it is completely possible that there is something wrong with your installation of OS X. I frequently recommend that anyone with a new computer (Mac or otherwise) format the hard drive, then reinstall the OS themselves. Further, I recommend that they "zero" the drive in the process.
Many computers ship from the factory with incipient disk errors. OS X will automatically repair these errors if they are minor, but critical system files could remain damaged. In addition to insuring that you have a properly-running installation of OS X, "zeroing" the hard drive will map out any bad blocks found on the drive, thus making it much less likely that you will encounter a disk error in the near future.
All this said, there could be something wrong with your MBP, hardware wise, but it is much more likely that you just have a bad installation. Also, the only way to make any determination on this score is to follow my recommendations, ruling out any software problem.

  • Possible line problems - Help Please?

    Good Morning,
Been having a lot of problems with slow speeds and the Hub disconnecting recently. I suspect this is to do with the phone line as my setup has not changed since previous issues I had with internal wiring which I fixed with help from people on here...
Anyway, my Hub is connected directly into the test socket and my stats are as below. This doesn't seem right. My noise margin seems very low and the number of errors and events seem rather high. My IP profile has been higher in the past and stable until a few weeks ago.
I realise the connection is not 'stable' as it's been less than three to five days - I'm struggling to keep a connection for 24 to 48 hours at the moment without a reset so this is good for now!
Any help from Mods or others much appreciated. Not much I can do at this end.
    Thanks,
    Dan.

  • Serious, possible spyware problem, help please

I have a serious situation happening and I have no idea where to go with it so hoping you guys can help.
I have a Nokia 2760 so a very basic phone but some strange things have been happening lately.
Firstly a few weeks back whenever I would call someone on the display screen it would not only list the person I was talking to but have my mothers contact there as well, I asked her if she was getting calls and hearing everything and she said no, so I just deleted her from the contact list and put her back in and it stopped.
Then 2 weeks ago while out with my husband she received a call from me and she heard 10 seconds of our what we were talking about at dinner. It was recorded on her voicemail so I heard it and looked at her log and it showed a call from me but my log showed nothing.
Then last night was the most disturbing, she once again got a call and it recorded what my husband and I were doing onto her voicemail again but once again no log on my phone showing I made a call and I know for a fact my phone was sitting closed on my bedside table.
What could be doing this? I looked it up and saw there is a program called flexispy that turns your phones microphone on by a remote user but being such a basic phone I find it hard to believe someone has control over my phone. Is this at all possible? and if so how do I find out if it's on my phone and how do I get this to stop, I am totally weirded out and it's disturbing to say the very least!!
    Thanks

There is no spyware for S40 phones like the 2760. It's just a minor software corruption that can happen with any phone.
Start by performing a revert to factory default settings. Enter *#7780# from standby and provide your security code when prompted. Unless you changed it, 't should be the default on all Nokia phones, 12345.
If this doesn't work, you'll need to take the phone to your nearest Nokia Care Point for them to reflash it. In this case, back up all your data on the phone first because this operation will wipe its memory clean.

  • Switching iTunes from mac to pc - having problems - help, please!!!!

I have an iPod and a Shuffle and all my music is in iTunes on my mac.
I want to now have my iTunes on my pc instead. I understand my iPod is not compatible, so I plan to re-format it once I get iTunes all squared away.
I downloaded iTunes onto my pc and...
Issue #1: When I open i Tunes I receive an error (no code) that says: "The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes." I can hit "ok" on the message and iTunes opens up.
I uninstalled and reinstalled. Same message. True, I have other CD burning software on the computer but don't want to delete it. Don't know if this is really an issue except for having to bypass that error message every time I open iTunes....
Issue #2: I Exported my iTunes library from the mac onto an external hard drive formated in fat32 thinking I could either import the music into iTunes on my pc, or, even better, use the external drive to store the music for use with iTunes on my pc.
Ideally, I'd store the music on the external hard drive and use iTunes on my PC with my iPod and Shuffle.
BUT, after searching the support site and discussions and trying the suggestions I found, I stil have no music showing up in iTunes on the pc.
Can anyone help me? I've spent quite a bit of time on this already and I really can't keep wasting the time. Thank you!!!!!!!!!

First you will want to look for updates to your other CD burning programs that will possiably fix this issue or try uninstalling reinstalling both iTUnes and quicktime.
Im not that mac savy, but on the windows side of things, iTUnes is very picky on what is where.you can recreat the Library on your PC if the file you saved from the mac is a "iTUnes Music Library.xml" file but that would be a hard thing and a mess cuz iTUnes for windows doesn't "Watch" folders. So if that Nickelback song you have was on C:/Mac/Music or however a mac does folders, then it would have to be in the EXACT location in windows. If not your going to have a very sloppy library full of ! marks.
But if you want you can recreate the library following these instructions http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93313

  • N00b mac user - dvd ripping & burning help please

    Hi
I have got Mac the Ripper and bought Toast Titanium for my iMac but cant manage to get a copy done yet.
I have tried to rip 2 DVD's using Mac the Ripper and on both it has come up with a warning at the end saying the video has 'bad sectors"
I then open Toast and using the DVD_Video from Video_TS option and drag the Video_TS folder from the DVD I have ripped to Toast as instructed it starts compressing and then brings up a box saying
    Quote:
" The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST
    Sense Code = 0x24
    INVALID FIELD IN CDB
I have also tried using Handbrake to rip the dvd's but that scans the dvd saying its scanning the titles but then just freezes
Anyone have any ideas please?? Its an Intel iMac.
BTW purely legal, making copies of ones I've bought for daughter so she can take on holiday with us
    Thanks

Some DVDs especially those made by sony and disney are mastered with bad sectors on purpose as part of the copy protection process. Mac the Ripper is not very good when it comes to these discs. I have to use my wife's pc with dvd fab decrypter to copy these discs. It is not the fault of the imac by any means. Every disc I have copied except for those made by sony or disney since I got my imac have been perfect. Toast could be giving an error because the file from Mac the Ripper may not be playable. Try playing them first with the dvd player or VLC player to see if they work. If they do, make sure you have updated toast to the latest version. Good luck>

  • Re: Possible line problems - Help Please?

I have a ver similar complaint, my broadband has regularly been downloading at around 5-6mb which is good for our area, about 2weeks ago it started dropping out and now whe connected I'm lucky to get 0.5mb, we also had a lot of noise on the line.
Bt came and checked the line and whilst they did find a problem with their equipment which they sorted they said the main cause of the crackle must be an internal short, which is not BT's Responsibility, which I completely understand.
However I pulled all the internal connections off the BT DP and did a quiet line test, which was fine, but even if I connect the HomeHub straight in to the BT socket, with no internal connections connected, I still get the same poor speed and unreliable connection whether wired straight to the computer of via wifi, I can't use iPlayer, any video streaming, and it's near impossible to work from home. Good job I opted to pay extra for unlimited downloads at 0.5mb I'm sure that was a smart move!
E-mailed BT who said they've done various tests and they asked me to reply, but the next line said don't reply to this e-mail address genius! a brilliant bit of customer service, ask for a reply then not tell you how to reply.
Anyway, Could the HomeHub have packed up? It seems to be the only piece of the puzzle left.
    James

A little more info following the responses...
I'm around 400m (metres) from the exchange in terms of a straight line, obviously the cable could be longer although I live on a road with many houses, not out in the sticks so I would suggest that the cable shouldn't be that much longer.
I am not using any extension leads, the router is 1 metre from the test socket and my computer is hard wired in the same room also into the router all internal wiring for phones is now disconnected and I am using the BT DP test socket.
This is slightly by the by as I have previously had 5+ MB at this address and I have not changed service provider, added any services or anything.
We moved in 9 months ago, house is 20y/old so it's not a new estate or anything, we've had BT broadband from day one, good speed 5-6mb when tested on occasions, and able to stream iPlayer on my Humax box/iPad and desktop, as well as YouTube etc... i.e all the stuff you expect to be able to do with broadband.
Nothing has changed but about 2 weeks ago the broadband just flopped, it now drops out regularly, the wireless devices including iPad are constantly loosing the signal, the hub is in the same location nothing's change, which is why I can't believe this is a fault at my end.
    Any further suggestions greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance.

  • New Mac mini  - cannot get started - HELP please

    HI everybody
I am struggling to get started with my macmini. I have it attached to a cinema display and switched it on expecting to go through the start up procedure and registration which is usually so intuitive.
The screen shows a wireless mouse diagram indicating that I must insert batteries. Now I do use a wireless mighty mouse and I assumed that everything would talk to each other automatically. Is this where I am going wrong? I am certain that my mini comes with bluetooth but do I need to use a 'plug in' mouse to get everything up and running?
Many thanks in anticipation of your responses.
    Jill

After you put the batteries in the mouse, did you open the slider on the mouse to turn it on?
Try it again with the mouse powered up and on before you start the computer, sometimes there is a bit of a pause while communication is established.

Normally, you just connect the monitor to the MacBook using a VGA adaptor that you can buy from an Apple Store.  Now try System Preferences > Displays > Detect Displays.  You should now be able to select a display mode for the monitor.  If it still doesn't work, then I'd check that everything is properly connected.  I've had problems with colours disappearing due to a faulty connection in the VGA adaptor.

  • Itunes library locked!!!! new mac user please help!!!!!!

i just got a new macbook pro.. i was transferring my music from an external hardrive to the itunes library, i have a lot of music, itunes stopped working so i forced it quit, and now when i try to open itunes i get this message that the itunes folder is locked or in a locked disk and i don't have permission to access it... What can i do??? im a new mac user.... please help!!!

    Di you get this fixed?
You could try changing the permissions of the file/folder where the iTunes library is stored
    It ''may' work
Find where the library is probably within the Music folder of your users home folder. Right click it and then Get Info
Go to the the Sharing and Permissions section at the bottom and make sure your user has rear write permissions. If not click the padlock change it, click the gear wheel and then apply to enclosing items, and OK.
I think that worked for me last time this happened...although I have now just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and the problem has just re occured and it has not worked this time. Maybe a re boot will help
You could also go to the Disk Utility (type Disk Utility in Spotlight) and try a repair permissions and Repair Disk

  • HELP!~  new mac user with MAJOR external hard drive/iTunes problems

    Hi everyone,
I hope you can help me out. I just got my new Powerbook Pro 2.0. It is really nice, but I am having a **** of a time with iTunes. I had an old Sony Viao and my friend turned me on to mac. So here I am, new computer and new 80G iPod. I have 120G of music on my external hard drive that played music right from the HD on my Vaio with no problems (until I upgraded to iT7.0, then the music ran choppy, but thats another issue). No, thinking that the Mac and iTunes will work perfectly together, I plugged in my External HD, turned on all the equipment, the mac finds the HD and I can see the music. Good. So, I change the location on the preferences to find the music on the ExHD and nothing. Then, I read all the forums and all and try EVERYTHING, moving the .xml file to the dektop, restarting iTunes, changing the location again, NOTHING works. I am about as frustrated as I can be. With over 26,000 songs that I cannot listen to.... I am about to regret this discision to get the mac. Any ideas? I also tried copy the files in the iTunes folder on the mac to the folder on the ExHD, but i don't know how on mac (there is no copy and paste command when you right click the mouse). I know my frustration is because I am new and dont know all the tricks yet.
I wish I could just call my buddy, but I am in Afghansitan fighting the taliban and he is in Hawaii. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks
MBP 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Brand New Mac user.......

Select your ext HD and do a key board command - CMD+I (Get Info - File Menu). Under the Ownership & Permissions tab - do you have read and write access? If not give yourself that access. You may be prompted for your admin password.
If your ext HD is the same one you used with the Vaio then I am thinking your ext HD is formated as a FAT32 and not a NTFS. Mac can read NTFS but not write to a NTFS format disk. If it is FAT32 then Mac can read and write. If it is a HFS+ format (Mac format) then there is no issue of read and write unless the disk is locked.
To copy files from one HD to anorther on a Mac - all you need to do is select and drag to the new location.
Check the Help Menu's of iTunes and the Finder. There is wealth of info built into your Mac OSX.
