New Mac User - Problem connecting to Internet via work Ethernet cable.

Hi all.
I am having problems connecting to the Internet through my work ethernet cable.
When I plug the cable in, Network settings tells me it's there and working, all of the ip numbers conform to what the IT dep say they should be, but safari won't connect to any site.
I can see the shared folders on the Exchange Server, and access the files no problem, but cannot get any connection to the internet.
Have called Apple Support and they seem to think the issue is with my work's Network which I am starting to agree with. We went through all of the settings together and they said it all looked ok. Then we tried deleting and re-installing the system configuration folder. Still no joy.
Airport works fine, (have tried it on three different routers), as long as the Ethernet cable is unplugged.
If I plug the Ethernet cable directly into a router, it works fine also.
I connect to my work network by running an ethernet cable from the wall socket to my Macbook. It's the same cable that I connect my PC with, and works fine on my PC.
Anyone come across anything similar?
My Macbook is just over a day old and running OS X 10.5.5.
Thanks

For some reason (and it's nothing to do with me) it's all working fine now.
Thanks for your help nonetheless.

This laptop can connect to a wireless network but when we try to connect using the Ethernet cable we get a limited connection unknown network message.
I am getting all my information second hand from a niece I bought the laptop for who has it at university.  She has had tech support out from the university and they say its a configuration issue on the laptop and not problem with the cable or connection.
I have read on some websites that Norton anti virus could be an issue?  But I had removed this and installed Kapersky.  Any ideas?

The wireless connection uses essentially everything necessary except the plumbing.

  • On my MacBook Pro when I am connected to the internet via an Ethernet cable, Facebook pictures do not load. They show up as white boxes with blue question marks.

On my new MacBook Pro when I am connected to the internet via an Ethernet cable, Facebook pictures do not load. They show up as white boxes with blue question marks. This also happens on a website editor. But, when I am connected to the internet via Wifi, everything load properly. This is my work computer, so I have to be able to connect through the Ethernet cable to access everything. Please help me!

I mostly use Safari. But I also tried it on Firefox, Mozilla, and Camino. Mac OS X. It's my work computer, so I've only tried it at the office. I have to be connected through the Ethernet cable to access my files and email on the server.

There's no setting. Plug in the cable to the adapter for either USB or Thunderbolt and plug the other end into your router. You can turn off wireless at that point.

  • New iPad having trouble connecting to Internet via Wifi.

I have had all 3 iPads and I got the new one on Friday, however starting today I have had a lot of trouble connecting to the Internet via Wifi. I could not connect at home nor at school where I have had no problems before with my previous iPads, and all my friends are having not having any problems connecting to the Internet with their iPad 2's. Is there something wrong with the new iPads?
    I have a 3rd generations iPad 16GB Wifi only.

Then you may have a defective iPad  If you can show it to an Apple Store Genius, you may get a replacement if the Genius can not fix it.
If there is no Apple Store near you, look for an Apple Authorized Repair Center.  There may be one in your city.  <Apple Authorized Repair Centers>

  • Problem connecting to internet via non-apple router

got a bit of a problem with the airport and my router. i have a BTVOYAGER-2110 router to connect to the internet. The router works fine and i can get the internet unsing an enternet cable into the back of the computer. But when i try to connect to the internet using my installed Airport card, it wont work. The Airport card picks up the router and connects to the network no problem. it even says in the system prefs>network menu that i am connected to the internet via arport, but i cannot bring up any pages and it does not work. also i cannot bring the router up in the admin utility. does anyone know how to solve this little problem?

I'm having a similar problem, (strong signal, definite connection to the network, but unable to access the internet): it is not necessarily a matter of "b" versus "g" protocol. When I go to Europe, most of the time I cannot connect to available wireless networks with the mac, though I can with my pc. So, I'll be interested in whatever solutions people have to your problem as well. In the meantime, go to the following link:

  • New mac user problems

So I'm a new mac convert - purchased my first macbook this summer - loved it... till recently. Basic setup, just using Parallels5 to run Win7 from bootcamp partition- everything fine. Then recently I noticed major slow down on bootup/shutdown, hanging on a blank blue screen at startup, not shutting down/restarting (get a message that I have to force it manually) and recently, the keyboard is unresponsive at login (seems to return after coming out of sleep). I thought that maybe it was software as I had updated to Parallels6, so I tried uninstalling it - no fix. Tried reinstalling/repairing the OS - no fix. So like any former Windows user, I figured I should wipe and start over. Booted from Mac OS startup DVD - took forever to load and also hung on a blue screen, but eventually was able to use Disk Utility to erase/format the Mac partition. I should mention that I ran the usual disk and hardware checks first and no problems were found. Then I tried reinstalling OSX6.3 - took about 40 minutes. However, when finished it gave me some installation failure message, asked me to restart and try again. I happened to restart without the DVD just to see and after a while it eventually booted OS, but again keyboard was unresponsive.
So I've very perplexed! Now it seems like it might be a hardware issue? Maybe a firmware problem? Anybody out there that could help - I'd be grateful.

One odd thing though is that the keyboard works fine at initial startup to choose to boot from the Win7 bootcamp partition. Once loaded, Win7 also works just fine - no errors or anything. Only with the "Mac side" does it seem to have an issue - mind you I haven't tried booting Win7 multiple times to be sure.

  • 4 Macs, 2 will connect to Internet via Airport, 2 won't

I have Airport Extreme with four computers linked wirelessly. All "see" the Airport and can share files with each other, but only two (the Apple PC's) connect to the Internet while the Intel Mac's don't. I have checked apple setup, network, everything and can't figure this out. When I run network diagnostics the results claim the airport express doesn't have a static IP. It's no problem with the Mac PC's...
I don't have these problems at home with Airport EXPRESS.

I have a similar situation but unfortunately no resolution.
    Setup:
Comcast modem connected to Airport Extreme various Macs connected through Airport.
Black MacBook - 10.4.8 connects fine, Internet, Mail, ..no problem.
    iBook G3 - 10.4.8 same, works fine.
17" G5 iMac - 10.4.7 gets full Airport signal and DHCP IP, but will not connect. Sometimes it will not even get an IP until I reset the Airport.
iBook G4 - 10.3.9 same problem as iMac.
I tried deleting prefs, pram reset, and a number of other things. I wonder now if maybe one of the 10.4.8 computers updated the Airport so that it will no longer work with other earlier systems. I will try to update the iMac to 10.4.8 by downloading the update on another computer and transferring it, since it cannot connect to the net. Will Post the results.

  • Problems connecting to internet via ethernet solved ( ? ! )

    Hi,
finally I've got my imac back. They have changed the main board, because I was not able to connect over PPPoE.....Just now I've set up the machine and have tried it out ...f..... still the same problem.... then I've changed the location , I mean I changed to the network location the service has used to test the system before returning back to me.... guess what happen?
    It was working,
but they were not using PPPoE, but using
    TCP/IP
    Configure IPv4 : Using DHCP
    PPPoE
    empty .. not activated
    Ethernet
    automatically
    Proxies
    manually
Now I wonder , was it really a defect mainboard, or was it a software problem
...btw: my password for the provider only has 6 digits ... everytime when I was using PPPoE typing in the password, the imac was completing the password by two additional digits ( "dots") .. perhaps that was/is the problem.
Now, as I'm connecting via DHCP the setting in the modem are used ... with the correct password ... anyhow .. it is working now ... but it makes me still wonder why I cannot use PPPoE.
    Any comments appreciated.
    Regards,
    Oliver from Malaysia

    Probably yes...
{I say that because I don't remember what mine say
on the cables. They just work, and when they fail,
I get another cable; sometimes the end connectors
get loose or more rare, a wire inside could break...
    So, I have spares on hand; probably the right ones.}

  • Problem connecting to internet with wired ethernet

Shortly after installing the Leopard 10.5.2 update, I could not connect to the internet through the wired ethernet connection. Connected wireless with no problem. Spent time with Apple tech. Determined that the machine was fine. Told to check the wall port. Had a windows PC connect fine through same cable and wall port. Also brought the MacBook to a different location. Connected to the ethernet port and connected to the internet successfully. Determined that the MacBook kept using an IP address of 192.168.1.103. This is the wrong address for my connection. The correct IP address is 172.16.7.1. Installed this address manually in the MacBook and established a connection. The MacBook cannot seem to connect automatically at this location. The Windows PC connects fine. The MacBook keeps coming up with the wrong IP address. Any idea what could be causing this??

The IP address when connected to a router will start with 192.168.x.x.
When connected to a modem you will get a different address.
When you connect to a cable modem for the first time it looks at the Media Access Control (MAC) address of whatever is connected.
It is a unique number for your device.
It only attaches to one device and provides an internet connection to that device by way of an IP address.
If you wish to connect another device and get an IP address for that new device, you need the modem to start over, since it has a monogamous relationship with the connected device.
In order to have the modem drop its relationship, it needs to be restarted.
This is not true of a dsl modem.
It sounds like your modem has linked with the MAC address of the router.
In order to connect directly to the modem and get it to link to your computer, you need to unplug the router from power.
    Disconnect its ethernet cable.
Restart the modem after about 15 seconds and wait until it restarts, about 2 minutes.
Then reconnect the modem and you will likely be able to connect to the internet.

  • Airport Express won't connect to internet via WAN ethernet

I have new model Airport Express (AE)
I am attempting to use the AE as a wifi router in my office.  I'm sure the office has some sort of secure internet, although when I hardwire my computer to the internet via ethernet my computer connects immediately to internet with no passwords or logins necessary.
I have set up my AE to create a new wireless network.  It is ready to go, but it does not recognize that it is connected to internet.  Ethernet cord is plugged into WAN input, and other end is plugged into wall for office supplied internet.
AE will not recognize that it is connected to internet.
I assume this is due to something with the office supplied internet being secured or "special."  Is there a work around here, or suggested next steps?
    Thanks.

If you get all three together, "Ethernet unplugged" would pretty much explain the other two errors. Troubleshoot that first.
Is the same ethernet cable you are using with the AE the same one that worked with your computer? Is it oriented in the same direction (same end to the wall) as when it was used with the computer? Your office might use a non-standard cabling system or be taking some other measures to deter the use of foreign equipment.
Have you asked your office's technical support folks for any special instructions?

  • Can't connect to internet with an ethernet cable?

  • Problems connecting to internet via bluetooth from...

I am trying to connect to the internet from my Mac PowerBook using my Nokia 5300. The phone pairs nicely and sets up but when I press "Join network on Nokai 5300" which should connect me to the Internet, the computer connects briefly to the phone after which it disconnects and a message saying : Bluetooth network failed. Your device unexpectedly disconnected. Make sure it is turned on and in range." appears. I have tried the same thing with other 5300 phones and this process worked nicely. What could be the problem? Something in settings or maybe something is wrong with my phone?

As I understand it, if you have MacOS X 10.4.9 or later, it just works! It is a Mac after all.
You need to make sure that the phone itself is connected to the appropriate mobile internet account. On my Australian 3 mobile that profile is called "Mobile Internet". Your network provider should be able to help with this. Once that is set you should be able to browse anywhere on the internet with the phone.
Then just pair the phone with the Mac in the usual Bluetooth way. Use bluetooth preferences to check the services available in the phone. You need to see, "PAN Network Access Point" in the list. Your Bluetooth menu bar menu should now contain "Join Network on NameOfYourPhone" Select that and you are connected.
If you check System Preferences -> Network you will see that a new ethernet port has appeared which unfortunately has nothing to show that it belongs to the phone. There will also be a dial up port with the name of the phone.
SNAFUs when I first set this up it dropped out after a few seconds. Like all things computer, a restart on the Mac and turning Bluetooth on the phone on and off a few times solved the problem.
A PAN network access point is like a WiFi access point except it uses Bluetooth and it is simpler.

  • Problem connecting to internet via Firefox as XUL Runner Error Platform version is not compatible with minVersion 1.9.2.16 max version 1.9.2.16

Firfox requested to update previous version to new version of which i allowed. After installation complete i tried to connect to the internet and was denied with a following error window appearing. As explained above i shall explain again as shown in the error window.
    XULRunner
Error: Platform version " is not compatible with
    minVersion >= 1.9.2.16
    maxVersion<= 1.9.2.16
This will not allow me to connect to the internet as i would like to continue to.
Please restore if possible my previous toolbar and able for me to connect to the internet.
    Thank you.

This issue can happen when the updater wasn't able to update all files in the Firefox program folder.
    Do a clean (re-)install:
    * Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 4.0: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html
    * Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    * Don't remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere (not in the Firefox program folder) and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • Mac Book Pro won't connect to internet via either Ethernet or wireless

A month ago my macbook pro suddenly stops working wirelessly with my virgin media router showing it has connected but no internet access. I have a second computer so i hadn't addressed the issue untill now. On a different virgin media router at my university flat I have exactly the same issue. I can connect to the Wi-Fi but it has no internet access and an IP of 169. so it is being rejected somehow. I have tried several things but they haven't worked. I stress that the ethernet doesnt work either which is unusually of most posts on this topic. If anyone could help me that would be much appreicated.

I had the exact same problem, here is what helped me, hopefully it will help you also...
I have been using my airport disk (edge_diskgo external HD) now for about 3 weeks, it has been rock solid... until tonight after the firmware update.
My macs could not locate the airport disk, but my pc's still could.
(Maybe this was how the security problem was solved? You can no longer access the Airport disk from macs? Brilliant!)
It turns out that all I had to do on my both my macs is go to
Airport disk utility (just type that in spotlight) and check
both boxes: Automatically discover Airport Disks
Show Airport disks in menu bar
Then I went to the top right hand side of the menu bar, and clicked on the airport disk utility icon, clicked on my basestation name and entered my basestation password.
I also had following settings in Airport Utility/Disks/File sharing:
    File sharing is enabled
secure shared disks (with base station password)
    Guest access (not allowed)
Share disks over ethernet wan port (checked)..
Advertise disks globally using bonjour (not checked)
My drives are back up with all of their contents, working now, we will see how they do tomorrow.
Thanks for all the help on this post, special Thanks to trevinwagner, hope this helps someone else.... its very late, Goodnight all
