New Mac User-questions

PRINTING:
1. How does one print or save part (or a "selection") of a webpage other than copying it to Word? I know how to print or save part of a Word doc.
2. How do I save orientation (portrait or landscape) when setting up printing presets? When I change the orientation, it changing the orientation for all my presets but can't be saved.
3. How does one save two-sided printing in the print resets when printing webpages? (I know how to do that for Word.) If I look at "Layout", the two-sided preference is greyed out and says turned off. Where do I turn it on?
SPOTLIGHT:
1. Is there any way to uncheck all boxes on the Spotlight prefs page rather than unchecking them one-by-one?
2. Am I correct in assuming the Spotlight does not search the Mac Help?
GENERAL:
1. Is there anyway to have a viewable date on the menu bar?
2. Is there an ergonomic keyboard for the Mac, one that is curved?
3. Can a generic keyboard be used instead of the Apple keyboard successfully? Other than a few key substitutions, are there any significant limitations of the generic board?
4. No one that I've talked to at the SF Apple Store knows this one. Is there any keyboard command that appropriately sizes an open window (does what the green cross button at the top of every window does)?
5. Is there a faster way to see a file size than select the file and press cmd/I or right click icon and select get info?
6. Is there anyway to save a webpage as a Word doc other than copying it onto Word? I want to be able to edit what I save to highlight or delete text. I know that I can save webpages as text but that can be hard to read.
If there is a better place to post these Mac questions, please advise. Thank you.

PRINTING:
1. How does one print or save part (or a "selection") of a webpage other than copying it to Word? I know how to print or save part of a Word doc.
Make a selection then drag the selection to the Desktop to create a text clipping. You can print the clip by dragging it into TextEdit or your word processor.
2. How do I save orientation (portrait or landscape) when setting up printing presets? When I change the orientation, it changing the orientation for all my presets but can't be saved.
The orientation cannot be saved.
3. How does one save two-sided printing in the print resets when printing webpages? (I know how to do that for Word.) If I look at "Layout", the two-sided preference is greyed out and says turned off. Where do I turn it on?
Again, this cannot be saved in the Print dialog. However, you may be able to set it up as the default in your printer's settings.
SPOTLIGHT:
1. Is there any way to uncheck all boxes on the Spotlight prefs page rather than unchecking them one-by-one?
No.
2. Am I correct in assuming the Spotlight does not search the Mac Help?
Yes.
GENERAL:
1. Is there anyway to have a viewable date on the menu bar?
Yes. Open Date and Time preference, click on Clock tab, set your preferences, check the box to Show Date and Time.
2. Is there an ergonomic keyboard for the Mac, one that is curved?
Yes. There are several. Do some Google searching and review Compatible Devices and Peripherals.
3. Can a generic keyboard be used instead of the Apple keyboard successfully? Other than a few key substitutions, are there any significant limitations of the generic board?
Yes, but not advisable.
4. No one that I've talked to at the SF Apple Store knows this one. Is there any keyboard command that appropriately sizes an open window (does what the green cross button at the top of every window does)?
Keyboard Shortcuts.
5. Is there a faster way to see a file size than select the file and press cmd/I or right click icon and select get info?
Yes. Select the Finder, select Show View Options from the View menu, check the box for Size. This will display a Size column in the Finder when in List view. If you use Icon view then check the box to Show Item Info.
6. Is there anyway to save a webpage as a Word doc other than copying it onto Word? I want to be able to edit what I save to highlight or delete text. I know that I can save webpages as text but that can be hard to read.
No. Web pages may be saved as plain text, as a URL link (.webloc) or as a Web Archive.
Most if not all of your questions are answered in online Help or the OS X User Guide or in your computer's User Guide or your software's documentation. These topics have been covered in the past and you might have tried searching the forum before posting a question as well as searching Google.
We are more than happy to help but you should first search the forum before posting a question. You'd be surprised how frequently the same questions are asked and answered. Also be sure to consult The User Tips library.
Hope this helps.

  • New mac user question for multiple user setup

    Hi
Trying to figure out the best way to set up my mac.  I am switching from a pc where we have two user accounts (for my wife and mysef).  We both have iphones with seperate icloud accounts but share the same itunes account for purchases. We currently use separate user accounts for itunes as well (keep her and my playlists seperate)  Also, we both have emails we will want to use the mail application for too.
So, my question is, do i need to create two user accounts or can i use just one and have multiple people / email accounts on the mail app as well as use only one itunes account for seeing how all contacts now back up in the icloud.
as a PC user, still trying to figure out the Mac world.
    thanks

  • New Mac user-External Hard Drive question...

Just purchased my 1st Mac/the new Mac mini. Arrived today & am very impressed.
Set-up, right out of the box, was incredibly SIMPLE and I cant believe what a little dynamo this thing is! I've thought about 'switching' to a Mac from PC for quite a while, but was always a little nervous, so I've patiently watched & waited from the sidelines- until now - and it was well worth the wait.
My 'question' is, can anyone recommend a good external hard drive I can use interchangeably between my PC & my new Mini? Still using the PC until I get completely acclimated with Mac platform/etc - I'd like something with at least
    1TB storage. Thanks!

Time Machine requires an external hard drive
You can back up by other means to CDs or DVDs
If you are a .MAC customer you get a decent backup program that backs up to your iDisk and/or to CD-DVD
You would NOT want to back up to your internal drive since that would accomplish nothing - a dead or messed up HD is no good for either the beginning part of the other part where the backup is

Yes 10.8.2 is the latest version of Mountain Lion. 10.7 was Lion and 10.6 was Snow Leopard.

  • New Mac User - probably a simple question.

I am a new mac user. I bought two macs to basically ichat my new daughter with her grandparents. This is the setup
    1. Macbook 2.0 / 2 gig ram with built in isight. Ethernet DSL connection 6 mps down/768 up.
    2. Mac Mini G4 / 1 gig ram with external isight. Ethernet DSL connections 2 mps down/384k up.
The quality just is very poor on the mac mini side. They can barely make out my daughter. The quality is acceptable on the macbook side. I have read the forum and tried the things I could understand. Under the connection doctor, the macbook side is getting 30fps and the mini is getting only 15fps.
Besides upgrading the mini to a intel based higher processor, is there anything we can do to get better video quality?
I tried this new software SIGHTSPEED and the video quality is amazing on both ends.

    Hi Amit,
The quicktime setting should not be on Automatic or the very top setting of Intranet/LAN as they both have problems with iChat.
Your download speed means you should use the 1.5meg/T1/Intranet/Lan setting.
Don't forget the restart of iChat if you have to change the setting.
If his download is 1.5 meg to 3 meg (half yours) he should also use the 1.5meg/T1 setting.
Is there any chance he is doing a download at the same time or other internet use ?
Are there other computers at his end that are on line ?
There is a vauge chance that the modem at one end can not handle the current speeds you are supposed to get from the ISP. However this is likely to show up in Speed tests when it is a lot lower than what you (both) are paying for.
Test site http://www.bplspeedtest.com/broadband-speed-test.php use the button with the red and green arrows.

  • G4 won't boot up for new Mac user

Hi guys. Brand new to Apple computers as I got a "defective" G4 from my neighbor. He was going to throw it away but I told him I would try to fix it first.
When I power it up, it makes a musical "greeting" power up sound and the monitor goes from dark black (as in "off") to a lighter gray, and then a folder appears in the middle of the screen alternating between a face and a question mark.
Does anyone know what is wrong with this computer so that I can repair it for future use? I am guessing a hard drive malfunction, but do not know for sure. And is it worth fixing? FYI - I do not have any software for this system.
Thanks for any help you can provide!
    -Mark

A 160g hard drive would run you about $70, while OS X would run about $120.
It would be great to borrow a copy of the os installation disk and boot from it to see if the computer has further problems. Do you know any other mac users? It would also allow you to see how much ram is in the machine (OS X likes ram) and that may be a further expense if you need more.
What are you going to use the machine for? That's the main question as to how much you should spend to fix the machine up. I don't know if it would be fast enough for you as an everyday computer, but internet use, word processing, ITunes, IPhoto would all work just fine. You won't be doing any gaming or heavy duty video processing.
I'd talk to them at the Apple Store, explain the situation, maybe they might be able to help given the situation. They've got a chance here to nab a new mac user, I'd think that may help your case.

  • Publishing a Website?  (New Mac User)

    Hello
I am a completely new Mac user and my brother and I want to design a website. The idea was to design a football discussion website, or something of the sort and use Google Ad-sense to try and make just a small amount of money from it, nothing serious, just for fun really.
Whats confusing me is whats involved in publishing a the site, how much it costs, getting the domain name you want etc.
So basically here's what we wanted to know..
    1. How do you publish a website using Iweb/.Mac
    2. How Much Does it cost to publish a website and continue running it using Iweb?
    3. We intend to use Google Ads on the website to make a small amount of money but would it just end up costing us more to pay for the website?
    4. Can everyone view a website designed on Iweb?
Sorry for the very simple questions haha
    Thanks

For such a site you may want to consider something like free forum hosting at Lefora. Optionally, you could also create an iWeb site which links to your forum there.

  • New mac user here......do I need an anti virs program??

    Hi group,
I am a new Mac user after being a windows / pc user forever. I finally got fed up with Windows and it's unstable ways we i purchased an I-mac from my local apple store this weekend. So far everything is working great and I am happy with the Imac.
I do have a questions about the need for an anti-virus software. Do I need one with MAC? I have been told that there are almost no virus with Mac's, unlike a pc where you need nortin or someone other 3rd party package to keep your machine safe while surfing online.
Does my new imac have something pre-installed or should I purchase one?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you

Do You Need Anti-Virus Protection for Your Mac?
According to Rich Mogull's article, Should Mac Users Run Antivirus Software?,
"The reality is that today the Mac platform is relatively safe. There are hundreds of thousands of viruses and other malicious software programs floating around for Windows, but less than 200 are known to target the Mac, and many of those are aimed at versions of the Mac OS prior to Mac OS X (and thus have no effect on a modern Mac).
It's not that Mac OS X is inherently more secure against viruses than current versions of Windows (although it was clearly more secure than Windows prior to XP SP2); the numerous vulnerabilities reported and patched in recent years are just as exploitable as their Windows equivalents. But most security experts agree that malicious software these days is driven by financial incentives, and it's far more profitable to target the most dominant platform."
Mr. Mogull is a computer security expert. I recommend reading the entire article as it is quite informative.
For additional information on viruses, trojans, and spyware visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on viruses and spyware.

  • New mac user needs imac g3 help

hi iam a new mac user.i just picked up a used snow imac g3 600mhz from a garage sale, and i was trying to figure out a couple things with it.when i turn it on it boots too mac osx 10.3.5,but the screen color is all grey, but readable.i tried too change the colors too default but it still stays grey.i know though when it boots and shuts down it will change color.from what i read it could need a firmware upgrade to fix this?or is this common with the imac series?
the only thing i could find out about it is that it needs mac 9.1 installed too do the firmware upgrade.another question is can i dual boot 9.1 and osx and be able to switch bewteen the 2? also how do i check my current firmware version on mac osx?any help would be great thanks

Hi Caddy and welcome to Apple Discussions,
how do i check my current firmware version on mac osx?any help would be great thanks
There are a couple ways to do it.
The easiest is boot the computer up and click and hold on the Apple slide down and release on "about this Mac". Click on the "more info" button. A window will open up and "hardware" will be selected. If not select it. Look down that window for "Boot ROM version".
    It should say "4.1.9 f1.
    If not go here:
    http://www.capecodgraphics.com/imac_firmware.htm
The definitive site on this problem.
and there it says one of the symptoms:
"S2 -- iMac starts up normally but with dim or strangely coloured display."
So that sounds like your problem.
another question is can i dual boot 9.1 and osx and be able to switch bewteen the 2?
Yes that will be no problem at all. !0.3.2 actually supports booting into Classic.
BTW congratulations that 600 Snow is like the Jaguar of iMac CRTs.

  • Snow Leopard or Lion for new Mac User?

Hi everyone: I purchased my first Mac (a MacBook Pro) about a month back and shortly thereafter upgraded to Lion for free through the apps store.  Since then, using/navigating the new Mac has been somewhat challenging for me and I'm not yet comfortable with using it for all of my computing needs.  (I have an old Toshiba that is still my go-to computer--for the moment.)  I suspect that part of my challenges stem from being a new Mac user (irrespective of the particular OS) after years of using PCs, but I do wonder if they may also relate to OS Lion, which seems to have complicated the user experience.  I was hoping that using a Mac would be more intuitive and simple than it seems to have been thus far.
With that in mind, might there be some utility in me reinstalling Snow Leopard (and if so how?) in order to become more used to the new Mac experience before permanently switching to Lion?  If I do, would I be able to, down the road, resintall Lion for free?
I recognize that this suggestion would involve some learning curve redundancy (learning the Mac on Snow Leopard and eventually re-learning it with Lion).   However, I have a sense that reverting back to Snow Leopard might ease my transition into the new Mac experience.   Either way, I'm looking forward to eventually tossing out that Toshiba!
Thanks for any/all thoughts.  Best, DC

If you want to downgrade to Snow Leopard then do the following:
    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.
However, there isn't that much difference between Snow Leopard and Lion that using Snow Leopard would prove easier to learn. There are lots of tutorials available at the Apple website to help you learn how to use a Mac. You might start with Apple - Support - Mac 101 and Apple - Support - Switch 101. And, for Lion see About MacOS X.

    Hi jersey,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Pages '09 forum.
Is this strictly a Pages/HP Photosmart issue, or do other applications share this inability to print in colour to this printer?
About the only advice I can offer is to:
    1.
Check the HP site for any updated drivers for your printer. Download and install if any are found.
    2.
Check the printer's settings in the Print dialogue. Your printer may offer the choice, here or in it's utility application, to print using only the black toner cartridge.
    3.
Try opening Pages from a different user account, and printing a new document from there. Success would indicate the issue lies in your user account, probably in a corrupted Pages preference (.plist) file.Go back to your usual account, locate the file and drag it to the trash. Try printing again from your usual account.
If these don't help, I'd suggest reposting your question in the Printing, Faxing and Scanning forum in the Mac OS X v10.6 (Snow Leopard) section of Discussions.
    Regards,
    Barry
