New Mac User - x1600 Driver Support Help

I bought my first Mac yesterday afternoon after using a PC for 9 years, I was told Macs are user friendly, that they make computing easy but as of right now I am not finding that to be the case.
I am not a big gamer but I do enjoy World of Warcraft. I installed and patched the game and when I logged in I was noticing some studdering in the video when moving by either the keyboard or mouse. I figured that I just needed to tweak some settings in-game but the problem kept happening. So I decided to go ahead and update the video drivers and that is what has led me to here.
I can't find any x1600 256Mb drivers. It's as the video card is no longer supported. Now I have been reading that there are 3rd Party websites or that I have to spend more money to get Windows XP but I figure if these are the options after spending current sell price w/ AppleCare I am better to return this 18 hour old machine then have play doctor on a new rig.
What am I missing?

DraigCoch,
I think the last poster assumed that you were running XP (and it appears from your initial post that you are not), and running the game there.
So, I will respond to your concerns about OS X video drivers.
No, you will not find them listed on ATI's website. Apple works with the various video card manufacturers (well, the developers, anyway), and in most cases the latest versions of the OS X drivers for all the "OEM" cards Apple uses are included in OS X. When new drivers become available, they are installed along with updates to OS X.
In some cases, ATI produce a new driver, but release of that driver will wait for the next update to OS X. This delay is usually on the order of only a few weeks, however, so the short answer to your question is that you already have the latest drivers. This is one of the reasons it can be said that "Macs just work." Of course, they are still computers...
So, the problem is not with the drivers. It is either with the game (reinstall??), or it is completely possible that there is something wrong with your installation of OS X. I frequently recommend that anyone with a new computer (Mac or otherwise) format the hard drive, then reinstall the OS themselves. Further, I recommend that they "zero" the drive in the process.
Many computers ship from the factory with incipient disk errors. OS X will automatically repair these errors if they are minor, but critical system files could remain damaged. In addition to insuring that you have a properly-running installation of OS X, "zeroing" the hard drive will map out any bad blocks found on the drive, thus making it much less likely that you will encounter a disk error in the near future.
All this said, there could be something wrong with your MBP, hardware wise, but it is much more likely that you just have a bad installation. Also, the only way to make any determination on this score is to follow my recommendations, ruling out any software problem.

  • New mac user needs imac g3 help

hi iam a new mac user.i just picked up a used snow imac g3 600mhz from a garage sale, and i was trying to figure out a couple things with it.when i turn it on it boots too mac osx 10.3.5,but the screen color is all grey, but readable.i tried too change the colors too default but it still stays grey.i know though when it boots and shuts down it will change color.from what i read it could need a firmware upgrade to fix this?or is this common with the imac series?
the only thing i could find out about it is that it needs mac 9.1 installed too do the firmware upgrade.another question is can i dual boot 9.1 and osx and be able to switch bewteen the 2? also how do i check my current firmware version on mac osx?any help would be great thanks

Hi Caddy and welcome to Apple Discussions,
how do i check my current firmware version on mac osx?any help would be great thanks
There are a couple ways to do it.
The easiest is boot the computer up and click and hold on the Apple slide down and release on "about this Mac". Click on the "more info" button. A window will open up and "hardware" will be selected. If not select it. Look down that window for "Boot ROM version".
    It should say "4.1.9 f1.
    If not go here:
    http://www.capecodgraphics.com/imac_firmware.htm
The definitive site on this problem.
and there it says one of the symptoms:
"S2 -- iMac starts up normally but with dim or strangely coloured display."
So that sounds like your problem.
another question is can i dual boot 9.1 and osx and be able to switch bewteen the 2?
Yes that will be no problem at all. !0.3.2 actually supports booting into Classic.
BTW congratulations that 600 Snow is like the Jaguar of iMac CRTs.

    See if this helps...
Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Keychain Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over.
Keychain Access asks for keychain "login" after changing login password...

  • HELP!~  new mac user with MAJOR external hard drive/iTunes problems

    Hi everyone,
I hope you can help me out. I just got my new Powerbook Pro 2.0. It is really nice, but I am having a **** of a time with iTunes. I had an old Sony Viao and my friend turned me on to mac. So here I am, new computer and new 80G iPod. I have 120G of music on my external hard drive that played music right from the HD on my Vaio with no problems (until I upgraded to iT7.0, then the music ran choppy, but thats another issue). No, thinking that the Mac and iTunes will work perfectly together, I plugged in my External HD, turned on all the equipment, the mac finds the HD and I can see the music. Good. So, I change the location on the preferences to find the music on the ExHD and nothing. Then, I read all the forums and all and try EVERYTHING, moving the .xml file to the dektop, restarting iTunes, changing the location again, NOTHING works. I am about as frustrated as I can be. With over 26,000 songs that I cannot listen to.... I am about to regret this discision to get the mac. Any ideas? I also tried copy the files in the iTunes folder on the mac to the folder on the ExHD, but i don't know how on mac (there is no copy and paste command when you right click the mouse). I know my frustration is because I am new and dont know all the tricks yet.
I wish I could just call my buddy, but I am in Afghansitan fighting the taliban and he is in Hawaii. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks
MBP 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Brand New Mac user.......

Select your ext HD and do a key board command - CMD+I (Get Info - File Menu). Under the Ownership & Permissions tab - do you have read and write access? If not give yourself that access. You may be prompted for your admin password.
If your ext HD is the same one you used with the Vaio then I am thinking your ext HD is formated as a FAT32 and not a NTFS. Mac can read NTFS but not write to a NTFS format disk. If it is FAT32 then Mac can read and write. If it is a HFS+ format (Mac format) then there is no issue of read and write unless the disk is locked.
To copy files from one HD to anorther on a Mac - all you need to do is select and drag to the new location.
Check the Help Menu's of iTunes and the Finder. There is wealth of info built into your Mac OSX.

  • HTML in EBAY for NEW MAC USER!  Please Help!

Hi, I am a brand new MAC user. Just bought a MACBOOK last week. Here is my HTML prob. I sell on ebay. I called apple support and they were not able to help me. When I list my item on eBay, HTML comes up in the description area. On my older PC it was regular readable english and NOT html gobble de gook. Anyone know how to switch over from the HTML junk so I can see the regular english and write about my product? thanks so much. Sorry, I am not a computer guru. I only know how to read email and sell on ebay

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Sounds like they are using non-standard HTML. Try using a different web browser*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/browser.html
Also verify it isn't your e-mail program that is open when you are viewing the file. Anything via e-mail which can't be converted by an e-mail program will display as just plain HTML. Look to the right of the Apple logo on your top left corner to see which program is active.

  • Itunes library locked!!!! new mac user please help!!!!!!

i just got a new macbook pro.. i was transferring my music from an external hardrive to the itunes library, i have a lot of music, itunes stopped working so i forced it quit, and now when i try to open itunes i get this message that the itunes folder is locked or in a locked disk and i don't have permission to access it... What can i do??? im a new mac user.... please help!!!

    Di you get this fixed?
You could try changing the permissions of the file/folder where the iTunes library is stored
    It ''may' work
Find where the library is probably within the Music folder of your users home folder. Right click it and then Get Info
Go to the the Sharing and Permissions section at the bottom and make sure your user has rear write permissions. If not click the padlock change it, click the gear wheel and then apply to enclosing items, and OK.
I think that worked for me last time this happened...although I have now just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and the problem has just re occured and it has not worked this time. Maybe a re boot will help
You could also go to the Disk Utility (type Disk Utility in Spotlight) and try a repair permissions and Repair Disk

  • IPhoto lost after leopard installation- new Mac user needs your help!!

First, let me state: BRAND NEW MAC USER- BEWARE!
Just got a new mac for Christmas (refurbished). It came with iPhoto. My first call was to technical support about issues installing Leopard. After we resolved those problems, iPhoto was gone (as well as several other less essential things like checkers, etc). Since I installed Leopard, do I now need to repurchase iLife or iPhoto? iPhoto was the real reason we bought the system- I'm dying to use it but it has vanished. I know so many people have posted questions about similar issues but they all seemed to have existing libraries that aren't working correctly. So forgive me if this is a repeat questions but I'd really appreciate the help. Take pity on a very new and very lost user... Thank you!

You need to re-install iPhoto from the system restore disks that came with your Mac. Choose to install the bundled applications only.
    Regards

Normally, you just connect the monitor to the MacBook using a VGA adaptor that you can buy from an Apple Store.  Now try System Preferences > Displays > Detect Displays.  You should now be able to select a display mode for the monitor.  If it still doesn't work, then I'd check that everything is properly connected.  I've had problems with colours disappearing due to a faulty connection in the VGA adaptor.

  • New Mac user-External Hard Drive question...

Just purchased my 1st Mac/the new Mac mini. Arrived today & am very impressed.
Set-up, right out of the box, was incredibly SIMPLE and I cant believe what a little dynamo this thing is! I've thought about 'switching' to a Mac from PC for quite a while, but was always a little nervous, so I've patiently watched & waited from the sidelines- until now - and it was well worth the wait.
My 'question' is, can anyone recommend a good external hard drive I can use interchangeably between my PC & my new Mini? Still using the PC until I get completely acclimated with Mac platform/etc - I'd like something with at least
    1TB storage. Thanks!

Time Machine requires an external hard drive
You can back up by other means to CDs or DVDs
If you are a .MAC customer you get a decent backup program that backs up to your iDisk and/or to CD-DVD
You would NOT want to back up to your internal drive since that would accomplish nothing - a dead or messed up HD is no good for either the beginning part of the other part where the backup is

No, Leopard 10.5.8 is as high as you can go on a PPC Mac.

  • Help Please - New MAC User - OS X 10.6.8 Freezing

Hello......New MAC user after moving from Windows and I have been delighted with the perfomance.  Out of the blue yesterday typing became hesistant.  Today Keyboard quit.  Changed batteries but still no go.  That was quickly followed by the MAC freezing up where I couldn't open anything, without doing a manual shut down, going through the white screen/flashing earth process.  I did a search and followed instructions concerning Disk Repair but I was only offered the Repair Permission option, which I did.  Rebotted but still the same situation.   Total MAC novice here so any advice would be appreciated but in understanable english.... .  Many thanks in advance.
