New mac with old apps?

Hey I'm planning to get new macbook air soon and I was wondering, I got mini mac now where I got loads of apps with addons Is it possible for me to transfer some of the apps which I got on my mac mini to macbook without instaling them ?

You can use a backup such as Time Machine, to help migrate to a new computer.
•OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mavericks
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5872
Toward the bottom of this ^ article you can see a toggle triangle that opens more
info about using migration assistant with a time machine, or other backup HDD.
It says, "Time Machine or other disk migration." The rest may be helpful, too.
The support article below is similar to this Mavericks one. I likely could find
other online articles with additional details, as some are cited here in ASC
discussions by some of the long-time high number volunteers. I have bookmark
links to places I've been over the past 15 years, some still work. So I may have
to look through the sites to see if any are applicable to this discussion.
(A few articles may suggest upgrading the OS X in the older computer, but
I would avoid anything but a minor step to the system in your old computer
because an upgrade to an old one may be a very bad idea. It can be awful.)
There are other articles in Support, some are more specific and others try to
cover a wider range of general purpose when possible. Things change, so an
older article may help to some extent, depending on the old OS X vintage;
should any question relate to the Mini's current OS X or what the applications
are that you may need to have similar ones of, to use documents or other files
you made in the older system & mini, in a new system in a MB/Air.
In some instances there may be a reference to a 'setup assistant' and some
of that is similar to the migration assistant; except one can be used before
you've personalized the new mac, and have it import stuff on initial boot up
of the new computer. I'd tend to wait and do that later, to see what really
can be done with the new computer, and use migration assistant later.
An older article similar to the one linked above, also mentions using setup assist.
•OS X: How to migrate from another mac using Mt Lion or earlier:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889?viewlocale=en_US
If you have an Apple Store with Genius bar, you could ask to see if they can
help you set up the new Mac, if you take your old one & backup hard drive
or time machine device in. Some can do that. However be sure that your old
Mini still has all its stuff since you may need to use it for the older applications
should some newer ones not be to your liking; or as a backup computer, if
you were planning on keeping it around. What Mini model series is it?
The Help viewer in your computer, should be able to supply you with more
information, and depending on the version OS X and its Help viewer, it
may draw information from the Support database servers online. I use a
google search or other, on occasion, & get Support articles that way, too.
Hopefully the new MacBook Air works out for you. I'd considered a MB/Pro
due to generally higher specs available, but don't really need Retina display.
So I get 'pre-buyers remorse' instead of being a compulsive buyer...
Good luck!

  • New Mac with old Time Machine

I have a new dual quad-core with SLeopard. I have been using a 1TB WD external as a time machine on my old Dual-core with Leopard. What do I do to move the WD time machine to the new Mac? Will it just start backing up the new data or do I have to wipe the WD and start over?

There's a new feature in Snow Leopard. When your first backup starts (not when you select the drive for use with Time Machine, oddly enough), you'll get a prompt asking what to do.

  • Using new Mac with old Iphone formerly used with Windows

I had my Iphone synced with a PC that literally burned up unexpectedly. I replaced it with a Mac and want to sync my phone, however, when I click to manage content manually, a message pops up telling me that my phone will be erased (!!). Because I have lots of music and apps on the phone, I don't want to go back to square one. What do I need to do to make the new computer work with my phone?
When I rip music from a CD, I can't drag the album to the phone; I have to copy them manually.
Also, I used to be able to rearrange icons on my phone via Itunes and that doesn't work either with the Mac. I have "authorized" the phone, but it didn't make any difference in anything.

I think you have to reformat the phone for a mac.

  • Get "Licensing for this product has stopped working" error on my New Mac with old Adobe software

hi people, i've recently purchased a new machine and can't work out how to get Illustrator cs3 or photoshop cs5 working on it...
photoshop says "Licensing for this product has stopped working. you cannot use this product at this time. you must repair the problem by uninstalling and then reinstalling this product or contacting your IT administrator or Adobe customer support for help", which is strange as it said some different before i tried asking adobe support about this...
    illustrator says the same thing.
customer support said i need to ask here because they can't provide support for these products.

thanks for response, let's start the dialogue.
what OS version?: OS version 10.9.3
Have you deactivated Photoshop on the old machine? No, i am not inclined to try this as i do need a working version for work, customer support tells me that i've purchased a serial key but they won't tell me what it is, just that i could try using it...  can't find any reference to this on my machine though:(
On how many computers have you (or someone else) installed Photoshop and register with your license?1 i think..
Have you tried uninstalling, cleaning and re-installing? no, though i've tried to find out how and can't even manage that:(   went to the adobe site and could only find their creative cloud thing which requires me to pay monthly:/...
    thanks

  • Setting up new phone with old apps

    Hello,
I got the iPhone 6 yesterday. First of all I synced my iPhone 5 so that it would have all my current apps etc then I plugged my iPhone 6 into my MacBook and restored it to my most recent backup. It synced photos and music but no apps. I looked at what apps had been saved to my MacBook and there was only 1. I then restored the iPhone 6 to factory settings and did the whole thing again. Same problem.
I did a bit of searching on google and found a piece of software called 'TouchCopy12'. I used this to put all my apps from my iPhone 5 onto my iTunes. This worked perfectly and now could see all the apps I wanted on my computer. I plugged in my iPhone 6 and chose all the apps I wanted and synced it. Some have transferred but I got an error message saying that i was not authorised to do this on this computer and I needed to authorise it. I did this but it said this computer was already authorised!
Does anyone know a way around this? Most of them are paid apps and some are free. I don't mind downloading the free ones but I don't want to have to pay for the paid ones again.
I don't know if this will be related, but while having my iPhone 5 i got married and therefore changed my iCloud username/email etc. I can't remember if the apps were downloaded on the old or new one. I have tried to log into my old iCloud account but I can not remember the password and when I answer the security questions it claims they are wrong and when I click to send a verification email it does not come through!
Thank you for any advice or solutions.

have tons of photos in my older version of photobooth, how do i migrate them to new mac with lion os. looked everywhere but can't find an answer.

It's actually very simple. In your old AB under the file menu click "Export Address Book Archive to your desktop. Then using the new system log in to the old via network and move the file from the old to the new.
Then open the new AB and click import AB archive"
    You're done

  • How do I get my old printer "HP Laserjet 4mv" to work on my newer Macs with OSX?

How do I get my old printer "HP Laserjet 4mv" to work on my newer Macs with OSX?
There is no HP support for this old printer. I have tried to connect via ethernet (thru ethernet router), and it does not show up in printer preferences. The printer worked fine on system 9x but when I went to my new macs with system X no luck. This is a great B&W printer that prints at 18 x 24". I would like to keep it and not junk it, but its been sitting on my desk unused for some time now. Any thoughts or JUNK IT! Thanks, R.T.

Does anyone at Apple have help for this sort of question - I too have an old printer (HP LaserJet 5MP) that I would like to keep using on my Mac. (Mac OSX 10.6.8).
I got it working by getting a USB cord that connects to it - but every once in a while it just stops working for weeks. The mac 'sees' it and it sends the data because the printer lights start blinking but then it just doesn't do anything. Is there no one who can tell me (and raterada) how to get some new life into these old printers. I would rather not add this (and a new toner cart) to the landfill just yet. . .

  • Moving to new Mac with time machine

    Hi
I'm purchasing a new mac pro soon and i'm wondering if using 'time machine' will enable me to transfer everything to the new mac, with everything 'in place' as it was on the old mac, in other words will i have to re-install my apps? (i certainly hope not)

Yes. I was surprised how easy it was and how well it worked when I migrated from an eMac (PowerPC) to an Intel iMac a few weeks ago. You'll have an even easier time.
Just make sure to use Migration Assistant when you first power on your Mac; when it asks if you want to transfer data from another Mac. Don't click "no" or "later" and then proceed to start from scratch. Using Migration Assistant after your Mac has been set up could lead to a whole bunch of permissions issues.

  • While intending to perform a clean install of Mountain Lion while continuing with old apps and files, is it a waste to restore a backup that was made while running Mountain Lion as an UPgrade from Lion?

While intending to perform a clean install of Mountain Lion while continuing with old apps and files, is it a waste to restore a backup that was made while running Mountain Lion as an UPgrade from Lion?
Originally I was running Mountain Lion as an UPgrade from Lion. I created a backup in Time Machine, performed a clean install of Mountain Lion, then I proceeded to use Time Machine to restore the back up.
When thinking about the essence of a back up restore, it occurrs to me that for all I know, I may have just wated my time IF Time Machine also restores all the old unneeded files that remain from Lion after an upgrade.
Since the backup was made while running Mountain Lion as an upgrade from Lion, did restoring this backup defeat the purpose of a clean install by reinstalling old Lion files?
If so, how can I re-do the last portion of the process so that I get all my home-folder files and apps back without the full bulk of old Lion files? Migration assistant I'm guessing?
    -Chris

    Hello John!
Thank you for your response which solved my problem. For other users who may stumble upon this, I'll clear up the confusion and share how I solved the problem with your help; When looking for answers to my computer problems, finding unresolved questions where person B offers a solution and person A never comes back and says "That worked, thank you.", it demonstrates a "k-thnx-bye" user mentality that leaves others with the same problem lost. Without further ado:
It is not clear what you did because the meaning of "clean install" is vague. You can erase a volume and install an OS which leaves none of its previous content intact,
This is what I did: I erased the volume leaving no previous content intact, while then installing OS X Mountain Lion.
or you can upgrade an existing OS (or reinstall the same one) which does not alter your user - installed files.
An upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion is what I started with initially before erasing anything. This was undesirable. Since this can cause Macs to run slower (especially whereas I'm using a mid-2011 Mac Mini), my goal was to go from operating within an upgrade to Mountain Lion, to operating within an installation of Montain Lion that was not preceded by any other oprating system.
Hence a "clean install of Mountain Lion while continuing with old apps and files" is confusing.
Well put and understood. What I should have said was:
    1.Erase the volume
    2.Install Mountain Lion clean
3.Confirm that Mountain Lion is functioning properly
4.Proceed to use either Time Machine or Migration Assistant to Import/Migrate/Copy over only two things; My old apps (That had been stored originally in the designated Applications folder) and all files and folders originally stored in the home folder under users.
If you restore from a Time Machine backup then all modifications that occurred subsequent to that backup become erased. It renders moot any OS X upgrade performed subsequent to that backup.
That makes sense and is just as I later suspected.
If so, how can I re-do the last portion of the process so that I get all my home-folder files and apps back without the full bulk of old Lion files? Migration assistant I'm guessing?
    Yes.
This is what I did and everything works perfectly. Thank you so much once again!

  • Moving iphoto5 files to new Mac with iPhoto 6

Just bought a new G5 which came with iPhoto 6, had backed up my files from my old G5 which were in iPhoto 5 on an external drive. Having a very hard time getting new mac to load up the photos. I replaced the iPhoto file on the new MAc with the old file - still comes up ss no photo's. I can open the files and see them, but new machine/iPhoto is not recognizing them. Would also like to bring over the folders and slideshows as well. Please help???

Here's one more possibility before you start the tedious process of one by one:
Use iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild your V5 library. It creates a new library by copying the image files and necessary data from the old one. Then you can try to have iPhoto 6 open the rebuild model and see it it will recognize the image files. Here's how:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: It can take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. One user reported that with a library of about 5,000 images it took about 12 hours so plan ahead.

  • Buying a new mac with mountain lion grants free upgrade on others?

I currently have three macs running lion.  I am about to purchase a new mac with mountain lion.  Does the purchase allow me to download the OS in app store, which in turn would allow me to upgrade my other macs to mountain lion free of charge?

Before you buy your Mac, just check to make sure it doesn't come with Mountain Lion already installed. If it comes with Lion, then you will have to download Mountain Lion from the App Store, and then you will be able to install it on all your Macs.
I believe the same applies for iLife, if it comes pre-installed on the Mac, then you probably will not be able to download it on all your other Macs.
