New MacBook 2.4 is SLOW

I got a new MacBook 2.4 Ghz with stock 2 GB of RAM. Prior to that I had a 3-year old MacBook with 1.8 Ghz processor, 2 GB of RAM and an upgrades 7200 RPM hard drive.
What has really surprised (and disappointed me) is that my old 1.8 Ghz MacBook was much snappier and more responsive than my new one, despite a much slower processor. Can't be the memory, because it also had 2 GB.
I suppose it could be the 7200 RPM hard drive, but I wouldn't have thought it would make such a big difference.
Any other possibilities come to mind? I've run system maintenance with Cocktail and rebuilt the directory using DiskWarrior (shouldn't be necessary with a new computer), and nothing has helped.

More opinion...
Logic would seem to indicate that adding more RAM would make a greater difference in performance because if you're short of free RAM, things get buffered to the much slower hard disk.
In practice, I didn't notice ANY performance boost when adding 2Gb (total of 4) to my son's MBP 2.26Ghz with a 5400rpm 250Gb factory disk. He's using 10.5.8, but he's running Mac Office 08, Safari or Firefox, Mail, and rarely Windows Office 2007 under Vista/Boot Camp. I think it's because the native Mac applications run pretty well in 2Gb or less, as do Windows Vista and Office 07.
He owns copies of 10.6.x and Windows 7 but hasn't installed either one yet. At the moment he's back to 2Gb because of repeated kernel panics caused by a bad memory card.

  • New MacBook Air running really slow?!?!

    Hello everyone,
Im new here and I hope I will find some help.
I got A new MacBook Air ( 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5 ) before xmas, on the 20th of Dec 2014... everything was ok, Im not moving it from its table...
Since I got it, I find it really SLOW when browsing the net... my old one was like 5 years old, with an almost dead battery and it was working like it was new.... and my Bf's MacBook Pro is 2 years old and its working more than fine!
Is it me being unlucky with it ??? Is it Yosemite??
Do I have to go to have it checked ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Oana

You have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it checked out.
Try resetting PRAM, SMC and staring up in SafeMode.

  • Why my brand-new macbook air getting so slow on internet connection?

My mba getting so slow all the sudden, it take me at least 20 sec to get on Google page. anybody can tell me what is wrong?

Have to say comparing this thread to many others that it isn't just the internet and wireless connection.  I'm just about ready to throw my new Macbook in the garbage as this has been an ongoing issue since I bought it.  And it's not the connectioon as anyone else coming in to our home is able to connect easily, Google TV runs just fine, the only device with issues is the MacBook.  The hours I waste waiting for pages to load or trying to reconnect are numerous.  Very dissappointed.
While this thread had a happy outcome, most of the others are like my situation where the problem doesn't get resolved.  If the standard PCs and windows can work fine why doesn't a Mac.  I feel duped and dumped twice as much money into a device that doesn't work as good as the less expensives laptops with Windows.
    Frustrated

  • Why is my new macbook Pro 2012 running slow

I bought my Macbook pro a couple days ago, I have made all the updates to it and is now freezing and showing the pinwheel all the time. I ran this computer side by side with my old 2011 macbook pro and this "new" one is running much slower.
Is anyone else experiencing the same issues?
Thanks for your time and help.
    Ray A.

I am also so dsappointed of buying macbook pro for the first time, and to think it was just almost a month ago....I am worried about the over heating issue, battery span that never lasprot that long as what the advertisement says...I really take extra care of this gadget because it is my first time having this so expenssive lappy...Ooohhh before I forget,my gadget is Macbook Pro 13 with memory of 8gb 1600 MHz DDR3..processor 2.9GHz Intel core I7...the only heave application tha I downloaded was the Mountain Lion I think ,and it was updated now from 10.8.1 - 10.8.2 ..maybe the next heavy app is the google chrome...and the rest is those apps that I bought from the Apple store that didnt cost me $10...before buying this unit ,I am using a lappy from Gateway with windows OS that runs slowly  because of maybe being so old...lol I am using it for almost 3yrs  because I only bought it from a junk shop alternately with Dell desktop thats so cheap,I only bought it almost $200 from a junkshop still.now after learning to fix and upgrade computers,I upgraded the DELL desktop from 1GB to 2GB,but I upraded my hardrive from 80gb to 1000gb...now I did test booting the 2,the desktop and this new Macbook Pro.my dell really boot so fast half more than this macbook pro...when I am downloading videos, really the Dell desktop have the fastest loading and downloading...I am not kidding and telling lies...I am so shock to know the real truth....I am sorry, but i is really true...But I promise my self to take care of this gadget because its my first time to have a genuinely brand new gadget and so expenssive...if no one believe this, i will upload a video on my youtube accnt just to prove that I am not telling a lie...oooh before I forget...just to prove that this gadget is geguine and new, here is the Serial Number of my Macbook Pro 13 which I posses almost a month now.. • My new Macbook 1,83 Ghz  Slower  than old Ibook 933Mhz ---!!??

I really don't get it - Am I missing something??
I'm running exactly the same applications as I used to on a G4 Ibook 933mhz, and I'm using my new Macbook the same way.
Programes are opening slower, windows are are closing slower, it takes forever to open Photoshop...and don't event hink about opening another programme at the same time...
I read previous post and checked the following:
    I did a test with Xbench ( score of 112 )
I doubt that more Ram will really solve the issue I will try...
It's slow weither the Computer is Hot or Cold.
the Widgets running are : Postit - Weather - date - Calculator.
    Any idea ?
I bought it last week - I might return it if this is not solved.
    Thanks for any feedback..
    Dave

After purchasing the blackbook, i compared its performance to a G4 1.44GHz notebook to see if there was a significant improvement. I made sure to put the stock 512MB of RAM back into it to match the ibook to keep from having an unfair advantage. the macbook right off the bat booted much faster than the ibook. file selection and application loading was a bit different, because as Mr. Tirta said, Rosetta can account for the delay in performance. But this is actually an unfair advantage on the part of the PPC unit, since all of the applications are in an optimal environment without the need of an emulation layer like the macbook. All things being equal(native apps for both units) the macbook would fly compared to the ibook. if you run the upcoming CS3, which will be a UB app, it will get a significant jump over the previous powerpc hardware. so its not your macbook thats slower than the powerbook, its your applications running in a non-compatible environment through translation.

  • New MacBook Pro Hard Drive Slow

On Monday night I was browsing the internet when my mid 2012 MacBook Pro started running slowly. I have never really had an issue with my Mac running slow and, so, after a particularly long spin of the rainbow wheel of death, I manually shut my computer down. When I tried to restart, all I got was the grey screen with the flashing folder-with-a-question-mark. I looked online with my phone to find a solution and I proceeded to try a number of suggestions from the support community, including trying to manually restart in safe mode, but as I didn't take my OS X installation disk to school with me, there wasn't much left for me to do (especially because I'm just over 3months outside the 1year warranty and live over an hour away from the nearest apple store). The next morning I took it to my college's OIT help desk and was later told my hard drive had failed and I would need to replace it. Thank god I utilize google drive for my work. Thank god. Today, after paying the $122.49 (no pitance on my part-time minimum-wage school salary) for the "apple recommended" hard drive, as opposed to the $55 amazon alternative, I find that my computer is running slowly again. Not even internet slow. 10-minutes-to-adjust-my-dock-preferences-slow. Writing-this-post-took-almost-an-hour-slow. Also, in the middle of writing this the spinning wheel of death reappeared for at least 10mins, and not wanting to manually restart given what happened last time I tried simply shutting my laptop and giving it a little nap. When I opened it I got a blue screen and (after a few minutes of silent sobbing) was forced to manually restart, which luckily brought me to the login. Why is my once-beloved Mac doing this to me? Is it the expensive new hard drive to blame? Has the issue from before held over and may soon kill this new drive? Any explanations or advice would be greatly appreciated as I have final exams and papers due next week and cannot afford to get to the apple store before I need to research and write two 15-page papers.

  • Can somebody diagnose why my new MacBook Pro is so slow and laggy?

I just bought this MacBook Pro (OS X 10.8.2) a month ago and it had been performing very well until last night.  I tried to stream a hockey game through Chrome and the browser crashed.  I didn't think it was a serious issue at first; I tried to force quit Chrome but everything just slowed down even more.  Eventually I just shut it down by holding the power button, hoping that it would be fine once I started it back up.
But it wasn't fine.  It took forever to boot up, and once it did, everything was slow and laggy.  There is delay using the trackpad and keyboard, applications are taking ages to open and sometimes won't respond, the color wheel is popping up for minutes at a time, etc.  It even seems like the internet itself is slowed down; I've tried different browsers in different locations of varying internet connections and they've all been very slow to load pages.  It's like the whole machine suddenly caught the flu or something.
I tried disk utility, but it says there's no problems.  The activity monitor doesn't show any significant CPU usage, and even after I cleaned the caches for Safari and Chrome, all the problems still persist.  I thought it might have caught a virus or some kind of malware, but I've been told that's highly unlikely.  Could it have something to do with Chrome or Flash (I was trying to update the latest Flash plug-in or something before the browser crashed)?  Like I said, the machine's fairly new, so not much of the RAM is used up.  Could anyone help me figure out what's wrong?

See if you can find some answers here:

  • My New Macbook Pro 15" is slow after loading my old files

    Hi There -
I had purchased a macbook pro a couple of years ago. After a couple of repairs the Macstore decided to replace my mac. They gave me the New Mac Book Pro (2.2 Ghz i7).  I was told that I should back up my old laptop using time machine and load it onto the new one. I did just that, followed all the instructions and i have all my files and programs (except of outlook which was a bit of a pain!!). In anycase, the issue I am having is that my new computer is very slow, everything lags and its just not fast, like it should be. I was wondering if you could help me figure out what could be wrong.
Is there a way I can optamize my computer? Is it possible that the old files are in a different format than the current version of my computer and that's why its lagging.
    Any suggestions would be great.
    Thank You
    Ajay

    Hi there the specs are:
    2.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor
    750GB 5400-rpm hard drive
Intel HD Graphics 3000 with 384MB DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory
AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 1GB GDDR5 memory
    2.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with 6MB L3 cache
    Optional 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with 8MB L3 cache
    4 gigs of ram.
all the software should be compatable with the os- i had the same os on the other computer

  • New Macbook Pro Wireless is slower than Old G5 Tower

Less than 2 months out of the box, my 15 inch 2.4Ghz Intel Macbook Pro started acting up.
First, waking it from sleep mode seemed to take longer than normal (5 to 10 seconds?).
Then one day, the battery just went kaput. I did a hardware test and got a hit. Called Apple and they mailed me a new battery in less than 24 hours.
The battery works great. But the sleep thing still seems to take longer than it should.
But the real thing that worries me is how SLOW the wireless connection is... at home, as well as on other people's networks. At home I have an Airport Extreme (not the latest square-shaped model, but the one that looks like a flying saucer). And my G5 Tower dual 1.8 wireless loads pages faster than my Macbook Pro.
I'm no expert, but that's just wrong.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance!

that's a good point too, if I'm getting you. People will be putting, quite understandably, in their G5 HDs into their MPs. Tech changes and so too the well being of HDs. It would pay in the end to do a really thorough job of making sure an HD is OK and working well.
Why is it so hard or impossible for Migration Assistant to have "smart" update and know the source is PPC and Apple Partition Table.
Because, I think, they were more concerned with the new machines than the old ones and their users. It didn't slow them down enough to consider the problems new users from G5s would go through.
Bunch of funky stuff all over the place if one looks hard enough, or encounters an extended "bad" day on their Macs. Shows me the tech is still so new and evolving, it seems it will never be complete. And I still think this is only the beginning in the Computer Age. If we make it, these things are going to change the face of the planet, for the better, if we use them right.

  • Brand new MacBook Pro has really slow download and streaming speeds

I'm new to Macs, and don't know much about computers in general. But I got a 13" MacBook Pro almost two weeks ago and have been experiencing really slow download and video streaming speeds. Pages load one image at a time, Netflix is almost impossible to use because the videos will stop buffering every five minutes even if I let them buffer for more than ten minutes. I haven't been experiencing any issues with wifi on my phone, and I've troubleshot our router. I'm not sure what it could be--but then again, I don't know a whole lot. Before I go running off to the Apple Store or call support, is there anything I can try in the meantime? Thanks!
    Here are the system specs:
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Graphics  Intel Iris
    Software  OS X 10.9.3 (13D65)
74.23 GB free out of 120.47 GB

Check with your isp regarding your download & upload speeds as well as streaming.  You need to determine if the issue is on their end.  You can also check on the speedtest.com website.  Compare what your isp tells you to the net speed website.

  • New MacBook Pro Running Extremely Slow.

My MacBook Pro was purchased less than a week ago, and it is now running very slow, at the point of freezing for over a minute. What could be a good solution for this? I tried searching on Google and Youtube but I don't trust any software downloads from websites other than Apple.  Thanks in advance.

  • New MacBook Pro is sometimes slow loading a website

I got a MacBook Pro for Christmas and have noticed that sometimes (not everytime) it takes forever to load a certain page. It doesn't happen to a certain website just at random times. My wifi is perfectly fine too. I use Google Chrome by the way. Please please please help me!

    I get the message:
Google Chrome could not load the webpage because google.com took too long to respond. The website may be down, or you may be experiencing issues with your Internet connection.
    Check your Internet connection.
Check any cables and reboot any routers, modems, or other network devices you may be using.
Allow Chrome to access the network in your firewall or antivirus settings.
If it is already listed as a program allowed to access the network, try removing it from the list and adding it again.
If you use a proxy server...
Check your proxy settings or contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working. If you don't believe you should be using a proxy server: Go to Applications > System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Proxies and deselect any proxies that have been selected.
    Error code: ERR_TIMED_OUT

  • New MacBook Pro is slow?

My new MacBook Pro is very slow. It has the most advanced hardware so it should be faster. If it goes down to "rest mood" where the screen goes black it takes more than a minute to get back again. The computer is less than two months old.
What am I doing wrong? I have nearly nothing stored on the computer and no heavy programs at all so far.
    Thanks

Time for a trip to the Apple store genius bar.  Your MBP is still under warranty and should be FAST!
    Ciao.
