New macbook..a cry for help!!!!!!!!

Hey all,
I bought a a black macbook on friday,my first mac and i have to say although happy to have it,i think i might have a few issues....but first let me say i'm not very tech savvy...
1st. i am noticing a slight rattle of some of the keys...QWEASDZXC basically the ones on the left hand side...i could be wrong but say for example, i press P a few times and then E i notice a distinct differnce in noise levels.
2nd. At times the trackpad seems to be a little slow on the take...it will work fine but every now and then i notice the cursor freeze for a split second.
3rd. when surfing the net i feel its not running at full speed(granted,i dont know what full speed should be)2 days ago when i first connected to internet via wireless,it more or less went to web pages instantaneously but ever since it seems to alot slower.if for example if download the apple page the 'frame' of the page will come in a second or 2 but all the captions etc will take anywhere up to 5/6 seconds more...is this normal???my father has a dell desk top which is 3 years old,my brother has a compaq (i think!)latop,i'm pretty sure neither one has had any signifcant memory upgrades, runs a few programmes etc and i'm certain they are faster then my mac.
4th.In general(and this could be down to me being unfamiliar with the machine) i feel that when going through applications etc,the machine just doesnt seem to be as fast as i had expected it be,i havent installed anything from the disks(as in,all the osx programmes are on it)maybe i need to get rid of some of them, but i just feel that if i think its slow after 2 days whats it going to be like when i start downloading stuff and really getting in to it etc???
Ok,so thats it for now...please believe when i say i'm not making these points in a complaining/whining type of way...apart from these issues the macbook looks great and i believe i've made to right move switching to apple...its just that my tech challenged gut instinct tells me that something is not right with the machine...or maybe my expectations are too high???...i dont think so.
so if any of you have any thoughts or ideas on the issues please post away...let me say again, this is not intented to be an angry post but i just want to get the best out of my new computer,
thanks for listening/reading
Paul.

bout ye (im in n.ireland atm ^_^ )
yes, if you quit the process now, it will start the
next time you open it, or it will start itself if its
a system process which automatically starts after
boot up.
I do not use limewire and didnt know what it was,
after google it now I learnt that its a p2p file
transfering programme....and I suspect its eating up
you ram.
What I would suggest you to try is restart your
computer, and this time dont run limewire, then
connect to the net as usual and run activity monitor
and see if there's any improvement.
bout ya!
i'll give that a try, only concern is..i installed limewire whilst writing in this thread..ie it was running slow before!another thing i might try(if you advise it!)when i turned on the computer the first time i didnt and still havent used the intallations disks...i've read on other threads that i can take out programmes that i'm not going to use (for a while)such as garageband, iphoto etc, printer options and other languages...this might free things up for me?all in all, still think its pretty strange...havent seen many other threads from new macbook owners with 1gb...
thanks,
PAul.

I have set up a Netgear dual band modem which works well with the iPhone and an older MacBook, but with this brand new MacBook it asks for a password every time I reopen the computer and open safari. As you can imagine this is very annoying. It says I am not connected to the internet and offers me a choice of nearby networks including mine and then asks for a password when I select it. Why does it do this with our new MacBooks (also with my son's brand new one) and not with the iPhone, iPad and older MacBook? They happily automatically connect to our network after entering the password just the once.

Sig, I appreciate you trying to be helpful. I have no idea what issues you were having or what issue exactly pgrounds has been having. Your assumption that everyone's set up is the same as yours is false however. There are many many documented WiFi issues that are a result of Lion installs. Many have been solved by 10.7.1 and 10.7.2. Others have been solved by a large variety of work arounds. Others have not had their issues solved yet.
I am one of those. I have an IT background, and I spent the better of five hours digging up workarounds and attempting all of them. For the benefit oh anyone who is having similar issues, I have posted links to all of those workarounds here. None of them worked in my case, but hopefully they will help pgrounds or others.
So, once again, if you have a new idea, I'd love to here it. But if it has already been posted in one of these links, it's not helpful, let it go.

Hi, this is really a cry for help in the vain hope there is somebody at bt who cares about my broadband issue. Returned from holiday to find dsl light off on modem, did all the resets / power cycles but initially told a week ago it was an issue in my area and would return next day, then told it was a fault on line, then told it was a fault at exchange, now told its an issue in my area. Saw a Open Reach guy in my road, he said its rubbish and there is signal in the cabinet. Just spent half an hour on hold to level 2 support but they put phone down on me REALLY FED UP!!!

  • Okay, so i was on craigslist and found a guy who would trade me his  fairly new Macbook 2008 model for my brand new iPad 2. Is this a good deal and should i go throuh with it?

Okay, so i was on craigslist and found a guy who would trade me his  fairly new Macbook 2008 model for my brand new iPad 2. Is this a good deal and should i go throuh with it?

A deal is only a good deal if you get the best value out of the deal.
If you need a MacBook more than an iPad or an iPad more than a MacBook, then it's a good deal.
Comes down to what value the use of the product is to you.

  • The NEW MACBOOK AIR ***** PLZ SOMEONE HELP ME GET THIS ACROSS TO SOMEONE AT APPLE

    Hi,
My Name is Essa and i live in Bahrain. I fell in love wih apple ever since i bought a macbook in 2005. The laptop (which im using now) has been with me for over 6 years. Not only i was happy with my product, i purchased more products, such as 3 iphones, all for me, a ipod nano the new one with the touch screen and the first edition of the iPad. I have never had a problem and everytime i would tell my friends if they needed a laptop to get a mac and be safe with it. I decided in august to get the new macbook air. The problem after a few months of using it, it started to act up. By act up i mean everytime i start it up the computer would freeze on the welcome screen and the arrow would be stuck in the top corner, and after several times of trying to start it up it just kept giving me that (PING) sound and would not load. I took it to the sale agent here in bahrain. They are called Apple Center. They were extremly nice, and worked on my laptop and they came back to me and said that there was an error with your logic board and it will take 4 weeks to fix it, as they had to recieve the parts form the states. I gladly gave them my laptop and waited for 4 weeks, keep in mind that i still used my old macbook in 2005 and it was stable as the day i bought it. After 4 weeks of waiting they said we have fixed the problem, and he showed me that the laptop was working fine. I closed the top keeping it on sleep mode. When i got home i realized that the same problem exisited that when the operating system loads up the cursor is stuck in the top left corner and mouse pad and keyboard were not working. After several times of shutting down the laptop and starting it up again i ended up with the same result. It kept giving me that (PING) sound and wouldnt load. I will be taking my laptop in on monday morning again and im assuming i will be waiting for another 4 weeks maybe more. Could you please explain to me what happened to Apple? What has made your company start producing laptop that were as crappy a windows based computers. The reason i switched over is because i found the stability is outstanding and nothing could go wrong. Plus the old laptop which im sending the messege from is my old macbook. It is still good, and doesnt crash. So why did i just spend over 1,500 dollars for a laptop that died after 3 months of purchase? I dont know how well apple takes care of their international customers, but to be honest i am fairly dissapointed with this product, and i wish that i didnt buy the new macbook air and just stuck with the old one. Please if anyone reads this msg and is able to help me in anyway to send it across i would greatly appreciate it. I will be posting my phone number at the bottom hopping for a call from apple.
For those who read this and help i owe you a lot, if I dont get any replies or a responce from them im sure that i am screaming into a black hole and that apple really do not care about their customers and instead of winning i would just choose a different product from now on.

    Essa Al Alawi
Hoping for someone to answer me back

Don't take your laptop back. Find out the number for Apple Care in your part of the world and call them. Tell your story to them. If the person on the phone can't help you, ask for their supervisor. Keep asking for supervisors until you get exactly what you want to get. If that mean you want to get the problem fixed without having the computer gone for four weeks, then keep asking for supervisors till you get someone who can do that for you.
Be prepared to be on the phone for a while, so arrange a speaker phone, water to hand etc. Be patient.
As for "crappy computers"--my MBA has worked flawlessly since the day I got it. As good if not better than any Apple laptop I've ever had, and I've had several. This is the thing though, there is a percentage of failure rate that occurs in electronics. It occurs whether we're talking about televison sets or toasters. If it's electric, it has that failure rate. Now sometimes a thing will be bad and in that case the word gets out and everyone knows that particular electronic has surpassed the normal failure percentage. The Airs, however, have not done that. Their reputation, so far, has been incredibly solid and good. So you can assume that you, unfortunately, got one out of that small percentage of electronics that have an issue.
Laptops, let us remember, are doing a lot in a very small area. A lot can go wrong, and it's pretty amazing how many don't, especially given how many are made and sold. Sometimes we get the bad apple in the barrel, it doesn' t mean that the company making it has gone down hill. We hope the manager of the store, or the company, or someone will do right by us. If they don't, then we need to make sure they do. Keep asking for upper management till you get what you want.

  • New MacBook Air SuperDrive for G4 PowerBook

My G4 PowerBook is still going strong except the original SuperDrive died a few months ago. While watching the MacWorld 2008 Keynote, I see that there is now an External MacBook Air SuperDrive option available for the new MacBook Air for $99. Does anyone know if this external Superdrive will work with the G4 PowerBooks?
    Thanks.

Hi, DLaid, and welcome to Apple Discussions. You could replace your internal Superdrive yourself for $50-S75 USD (depending on what drive you chose) and an hour of your time. See the link in my post above. Buying an external optical drive to use with a portable computer would be silly, but if you wanted to do it anyway, there are dozens to choose from besides Apple's. As I explained above, a USB-only drive is totally inappropriate for use with a Tibook, even if it would work. Get a FireWire-capable drive if you buy an external.
Be aware also that when you post in these forums, you aren't talking to Apple; you're just talking to other Mac users like yourself. The people at Apple who need to hear your concerns don't monitor these boards. This is explained in the "Help & Terms of Use" link that appears in the right sidebar of every Discussions page. Your second-paragraph gripes would be more usefully addressed directly to Apple through the appropriate Product Feedback channels:

  • New macbook pro problem, plz help

hey everyone.i just bought the new macbook pro last week, 15" i7core 2ghz. i am a very serious musician, and im going going to university next year to study music, the whole reason i bought this computer is for recording, all the musicians i know who are serious/professionals use macs. when i first turn on my computer everything is fine, but once i plug my guitar in through my zoom g2.1u pedal, garageband freezes and i have to force quit it, this just started happening within the past 2 days.for the first week i recorded with it fine.  it was also happening yesterday without even plugging in my guitar at all. when this happens the internet also shuts down. when i open safari it doesnt say you are not conncted to the internet, it just has a blank white page. when this happens everything else isnt working right either, everything is slow and laggy. i paid alot of friggin money for this thing and i wanted to keep it clean the only things ive done to it were, i took some mp3, pdf and guitar pro files from my old windows xp onto my mac through a usb stick, downloaded a mp3 from online and set a cool backround as my desktop. I thought macs were supposed to be resilient? or do i just have a defective one. these problems are quite specific but if i cant use garageband/record with my mac theres not a rly a point of me having one.
i hope someone can help me out here.

  • New Mac user looking for help with Finder, Preview, Keyboard, & Dock

So about a month ago I switched over from a lifelong Windows user to a brand new MacBook Pro, and while I am adjusting pretty well, there are still some things that I haven't quite figured out.
First up on the list is Finder! I like my files to be arranged just like how they are in Windows Explorer--folders first alphabetically, then files alphabetically. I've managed to acquire this setting by messing around with the "clean up by" and "arrange by" functions but I don't really know the specific combination. Most of the time these preferences are saved and set as the defaults under "View Options" but every once in a while it resets and I have to tinker around with the settings all over again. Does anyone know of a way to fix this? It's only happened twice so far, but I'd rather not have it happen again. Also, occasionally when I delete an item, there is a blank space left where the icon was instead of all the files following it bumping up a space. Any quick fixes for this bug?
Next up is Preview. Again, I like the Windows Way and I like to be able to browse between the files in a folder while using Preview/Windows Photo Viewer. I know that there is a way to browse between files if you select the whole folder and stick it in Preview, but is there a way to achieve the same result without having to do that? An app or "extension" of some sort that adds arrows in to browse between photos? I've had no luck finding anything other than the aforementioned option. Is there a good free alternative to Preview that will function similarly with the browse between photos option?
One of my favorite things about my new Mac is the backlit keyboard function. My old laptop didn't have it and as someone who is online more often at night it is super helpful. But is there a way to turn it off during the day/in bright settings? A way to put it on a timer? In System Preferences I selected the option "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light", which I assumed to mean would have the keyboard NOT very bright when there IS light, but it continues to light up just the same. Any apps or extensions to help with this one?
And finally, the dock! This question is more about aesthetics than functionality but help is appreciated all the same. Currently, my dock looks like this: http://i42.tinypic.com/35ktxlz.png It is rather opaque and the indicator lights can barely be seen. However, in a lot of tutorial videos I've been watching, many people have docks that look like this: http://i.i.cbsi.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim/2011/07/19/Lion_LaunchPad.png It is a darker shade of gray, the divider is dashed rather than a straight line, and the indicator lights are clearly visible. Does anybody know how to get this look for the dock? I've looked in the dock preferences but there's not really anything in there other than magnification/size/effects.
That about sums things up! I'm sorry if any of these seem like "silly" questions but they are all things I have been unable to find answers for. Any and all tips, tricks, and help is appreciated! Thanks in advance for all your help!!

congratulations on coming over from the dark side.
Seems like you are interested in column view, which would show you the hierarchy of folders and files:  Column View in Mac OS X Mountain Lion - For Dummies Not sure what's going on if your finder settings don't stay put. May be a corrupted preferences file, which is easy to fix, but is perhaps a topic for another discussion.
What I'd suggest is to have an open mind and try to see what the mac can do, rather than force it to look like your windows machine. I mean, if you just want it to look like windows, then why bother switching? If you give it a little time, you'll start to appreciate the mac way of doing things, and see how it is infinitely more awesome, powerful, creative, intuitive, and better designed (and the software way better written)  than what you left behind. But that's your call.
There are some threads on this forum with complaints about the backlight. Keyboard backlight settings query...: Apple Support Communities  Evidently it depends on the angle of the screen and the light sensor relative to the light. Some suggest that a SMC reset may help: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)  This is not an issue for me, I just adjust the brightness with the keyboard buttons if I want. Real men shift their own gears, drink their coffee black, and adjust their own keyboard brightness. I am not aware of any software to exert more control over this feature but a search of macupdate  Download Apple Mac Software & iPhone Software : MacUpdate may help. I mean, it's up to you what is important. I can waste a lot of time playing around with the GUI and with unnecessary software, or I can just get my work (and play) done.
You might prefer the no-glass dock, that removes the shelf, and makes the indicator lights like more discrete orbs. You can do this with the terminal. Using the terminal is also, perhaps, a topic for another discussion.I like the 2D dock much better. If you want I'll give you some directions for how to do it. Otherwise, here's a reference: 2D Dock - MacRumors Forums

    Hello dwb,
Here is the screen shot, just the top half, there are another 10 pages, but I guess this should enough for you to have an idea of waht is going on, bit small I am afraid. No, I don't have any apps setup to run when I open my computer, the kernel, varies between 290 and 305 per cent ish.
Would that PRAM thing help ? I think it may be the computer itself, well something inside, as this the first time that the fan has ever started running since I have this computer, even when I have 3 or 4 apps running.
Thank you again for your advice,

  • New Macbook dud, leaving for military duty in remote loaction.

I recently convinced my sister to purchase a MacBook. She logs in, starts the updates and it restarts, hanging for eternity at the apple boot screen.
I professed the quality and consideration of Apple, and she is given one of the few bad apples. She must take her laptop into the MacStore. Unfortunately she is leaving for an island off the coast of Africa in mere days for Naval Duty - making shipping difficult if not impossible.
Does anyone have advice for expediting a return, reissue or consideration. As not only mine, but apples reputation for my circle of computer dependents hangs in the balance. Unfortunately.
    Thank you.

    A few things...
1.) Where was the computer purchased? Was it purchased online or in an Apple Retail Store?
1a.) If it was purchased online, and you look on the product sticker on the outside of the box is the Part Number an MBxxxxx/A or a Zxxx? If it's a "Z" then the unit is considered CTO/BTO and almost all Apple Retail Stores will typically refer you to call back into Apple to arrange it's replacement (the stores can fix it for you). I'd found out the answer to that immediately.
1b.) If it wasn't purchased from Apple (retail store, online) and you try to return it through Apple, that's not going to work. Because there's no history of the transaction in their POS system and thus no receipt or order number to arrange the exchange through. I'd call into Applecare and see what your options are at that point, given the situation and timeline.
2.) It's possible that there's nothing wrong with the hardware and it's a software issue. I purchased a brand new MacBook Air about a year ago and out of the box it was very clear that the image from the factory was bad. None of my iLife applications would load, despite being launched for the first time. After a clean install of the OS off the disc that came with the computer, the machine worked fine.
3.) Given your short timeline, I'd try to do as much troubleshooting as possible while still allowing for a return/exchange/service window (if that's possible). Potentially, we're dealing with a software issue that doesn't warrant a return/exchange but rather (unfortunately) a little extra work on behalf of the owner. Typically not a behavior of a new machine but there's that chance.

  • New MacBook Pro's for Aperture

Apple just released their new MacBooks.
A graphic on the Apple site claims the Core 2 Duo will be 28% faster with Aperture. The LED display is claimed to display "blacker blacks and whiter whites and many more colors in between" as well as being the "ideal vehicle for displaying high-resolution Photoshop images".
The new graphics performance is said to be 57% faster than the original core-due based MacBook Pro.
Sounds like the ultimate Aperture/Photo editing laptop!

I'm very excited about these new models as well, particularly the LED backlighting. I'm upgrading from a 3-year-old PowerMac G4, 1.5Ghz, so I should see a performance boost almost no matter which one I pick. I wonder if LED backlighting saves on battery time?
Anyhow, looking at my choices for 15" laptop it's basically 2.2Ghz vs. 2.4Ghz, 160GB vs. 120GB, and 128MB video RAM vs. 256MB video RAM. Everything else looks the same -- correct?
Given that my primary use is photography (Photoshop CS3 and Aperture), my questions are:
    1. Is 2GB RAM enough? It seems to be on my G5 tower.
    2. Will I see any difference between the two video cards?
If it's just texture RAM, probably not, but if there
are more pipelines in the 256MB version or something,
Aperture will likely be sensitive to it. I sure got
bitten hard with my G5 tower's video card!
    3. Should I opt for the 7200RPM drive? Is it going to
make a significant performance difference vs. the extra
    power drainage?
    4. The 0.2Ghz CPU difference seems completely unimportant,
but if there's extra cache on the 2.4Ghz model or some
other enhancement, it could make a real difference.
    Thanks much,
    ALF

  • New macbook pro upgrades for iwork 08

I just got a new macbook pro and transfered all my files from my old mac. Was able to upgrade iworks but still seem to have the old version of iworks 08... Should i reset my computer? Thanks a million!

That is up to you; personally, I am continuing to use the older versions as the new ones have several functionality losses (and am ignoring the new versions for now until some of the functionalities are added back in). Having choices is a good thing. You don't have to reinstall - you can simply delete the old versions if you like.

  • New macbook Pro setback for Audio Production.

the new macbook pro don't come with a Firewire 400 port anymore.
everybody knows that usb is too slow for audio transfer and Firewire 800 is usual.
audio interfaces that use firewire 400 can't be used and with only one firewire 800 port there's no room left 'cause we need that to connect the external drives with audio files.
most interfaces need to be connected directly to the computer.
    Any Ideas????

I, too, have an issue with the port configuration on MBPs -- too many USB2.0 ports, not enough FW800 ports. Nevertheless, please note that:
    1. Bilingual FW800 FW400 cables (really good ones) are available for less than $20.
    2. You can daisy chain external FW HDDs (even heterogeneously, i.e. you can cable your computer to a FW800 device using a FW800 cable and then use a FW400 cable to connect the first drive to a FW400 HDD, etc.). This capability is dependent on having redundant or multi-protocol drive enclosures (that is, you will need drives that have at least two FW ports, such as two FW800 ports or a FW800 port plus a FW400 port, not just a single USB2.0 port).
    3. You can go hog wild and purchase a full-on FW800 hub/repeater like the NitroAV Professional Firewire/1394b 8-Port device (google it). I use this device to connect five external HDDs to my MBP (four FW800 drives and one FW400 drive). This hub will set you back $150 -- not trivial, but an elegant solution if you use multiple drives, and it comes with the AC power adapter (believe it or not, some hub manufacturers require you to purchase the AC adapter separately). In my configuration, six ports are used -- five for the drives and the sixth to connect the MBP via a FW800 cable. The hub has the additional advantage of eliminating several of the cables that would otherwise connect directly to my computer, which is, after all, a laptop; the fewer things I have to connect/disconnect when I move my MBP around, the better. You can think of this as a do-it yourself version of the docking station that Apple forgot to give us, at least as far as drive connectivity is concerned!
As an aside, my MBP (see model notes below) does in fact have both a FW800 and a FW400 port. I wish Apple configured unibody MBPs to include two USB2.0 ports and two FW800 ports -- but the above tips make the world right.
Finally, I just don't get the gripe about cabling costs. The unibody MBPs are high end laptops -- most purchasers will have invested well over $3K in their machines. There are a thousand usage patterns; I would much rather buy what I need for my applications without incurring the expense of purchasing bundled stuff that I don't need and which winds up in a (bursting at the seams) cable/doodad drawer.
