New MacBook Air vs. MacBook Pro?

My crappy HP laptop has officially passed away last night, after being sick for quite a while (RIP). I hate HP and usually get it, only because I'm broke. But I've always admired MacBooks and have gotten used to using Apple (I have an Apple computer at work, I have an iPhone/iPad). Anyway, so now I'm looking to get either a MacBook Air or a MacBook Pro. I'm currently debating between the basic 13" MBP and the 13" MBA. They both look delicious. The price looks better for the MBA, but I can throw in a couple hundred if the MBP is more worth it.
Here's some more about me. I'm a recent college graduate. I do A LOT of writing and sometimes PowerPoint presentations, so I'm gonna need to make heavy use of Microsoft Office. I'd also like to do some light graphic design and video editing. I plan to use the basic Apple video editor + Adobe Photoshop and maybe InDesign. I listen to a lot of music and occassionally watch some shows/movies. I kinda take a lot of photos and video so I'll be uploading a lot of those. I do plan to travel with it somewhat, but not all the time. Btw, this will also be my main computer. I want it to last me a while, unlike the HP which is only good for a year then starts having problems. Suggestions?

I currently have a 2 year old 13" MBP with a 256GB Samsung SSD and 8GB of RAM. It has been so long since I've used a DVD or CD that I'm considering removing the optical drive and adding a second hard drive since 256GB is a bit of a squeeze for me. I've always tended to keep my Mac notebooks 24-30 months and then sell them with a bit of AppleCare extended warranty left - which tends to reassure the new owner. It is looking like this notebook has at least another year of life for me - and it is my main computer.
If I were in the market today I'd take a hard look at the MBA mostly due to the long battery life. The trade-off is a computer that's not upgradeable and not being able to add RAM concerns me. I started out with 4GB with this current machine and upgraded it to 8GB after installing Lion. The SSD has made a big difference, but still; with only 4GB of RAM will the Air take me 21/2 years? Since my notebook has become my main machine, while I find the Air tempting, I'd probably go with another MBP since it can accept both hard drive and RAM upgrades.

  • New MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros supporting Snow Leopard?

Do the new MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros support the Snow Leopard OS? I have been trying to install 10.6 but the screen is blacking out after install for the Air and I cannot even boot into an external drive for the Pro. Any suggestions or help?

    Kada,
A Mac's Firmware is designed to reject the installation of a Mac operating system that predates the version and build the unit originally shipped with. There is a good reason for it, as earlier versions would unlikely be in anyway compatible with the hardware. An OS that predates the hardware would not have the requisite drivers for the built-in peripherals, such as the graphics subsystem and ports. The safetey measure prevents Apple from having to deal with the potential nightmare of users having problems they are not prepared to alleviate.
You may be able to physically create a working situation by running an earlier build using a VM layer, such as using Parallels or Fusion, but Snow Leopard's single user licensing doesn't lawfully permit it. Snow Leopard's Server edition does however. Then again, it still wouldn't solve your scenario, as you would be running Lion or Mountain Lion to support the VM.

  • MacBook Air and MacBook Pro Update 2.0

A new update was released today for june 2012 macbook pro'ss/air's. Is anyone else hoping for gaming improvements/improved nvidia drivers? I just updated but havent had a chance to test anything yet. I would also be interested in seeing if battery life improved at all.
About MacBook Air and MacBook Pro Update 2.0
This update includes graphics performance and reliability enhancements and improves compatibility with some USB devices.
This update is recommended for all Mac notebooks introduced in June 2012.

If both computers were configured identically, then they would both lose the same amount of battery life with respect to the same starting configuration - comparing apple to apples. I don't know how much the added RAM, etc. would reduce battery life, but it would be less for both models.
Battery life is a tricky subject because most mfgr.s like to suggest as long a life as possible, but often do so under a set of conditions that are not common to most users. Apple is no different. Their computers do have good battery life, however. But not likely as long as what is in the ads for the typical user.

  • Which is better for physical therapy graduate student, a MacBook air or MacBook pro?

Which is better for a physical therapy graduate student, a MacBook air or MacBook pro?

    Macbook Air
I cannot see you using strenuous applications to help you with a Physical Therapy Degree.
Have a think of whether you want an 11" or 13".
I'd recommend the 13" because although the 11" is perfect for taking notes in class etc.; when it comes to performing as a desktop and not sitting on your lap, it can seem too small.
The 13" is the best of both worlds. You can keep the portability and the power in one.
Make sure you get a large enough SSD, they always fill up fast with documents and possibly downloaded text books etc.
With the 13" if you decide to create a innovative project or a collection of photos, you can also use more RAM-consuming applications like iPhoto and iMovie, or even Aperture without worrying about freezing.

  • MacBook air versus MacBook Pro

Which is better for video editing: MacBook air or MacBook pro? Which is more durable? What is the difference?

both will do the job for your.
the macbook air having a better resolution than the 13 Inch Macbook Pro.
the macbook air is lighter but not by much if comparing to a 13 Inch Macbook Pro.
the macbook pro however, comes with an optical drive and the macbook air does not.
the macbook pro's memory is upgradeable and the macbook air's memory is fixed.
the best solution for you, go to the apple store or best buy and compare them side by side.
i own 2 macbook pros - a 13 inch and 15 inch - upgraded the RAM to 16GB in both of them and took the hard drive off and installed SSDs in them.  Now I have a very fast Macbook Pro.

  • Macbook Air or Macbook Pro? What do you think?

I am currently in my last year of high school and will be off to university next year. I am thinking of getting a Mac but i'm not sure which one. I am just wondering if what do you guys think? Macbook Air or the Pro one? I will be mostly using it for school work and for university work on September. As well as for personal use. Thanks

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air forums. This is the forum for the white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • After update to MacBook Air and MacBook Pro Update 2.0 screen start flicking

I've just updated my macbook pro 15" retina with Macbook Air and MacBook Pro Update 2.0 from App store (just this update).
After that, every time it goes on the screen saver or if I close it, I can't get it back on, the screen starts flicking black.
There is no away I can enter the password, even the keyboard is flicking.
I have to force the macbook pro power off and on in order to use it.
    The update is this http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1609
    How can I solve this?

Unfortuantely, right now there appears to be no solution except for restoring from a backup before Update 2.0.
Update 2.0 is a mess - you are lucky if that is the only thing it affects.  See: https://discussions.apple.com/message/20272989#20272989

  • Macbook Air (Apple MacBook Air MD760HNA )

    Hello!
My Name is Neeraj. I am a Multimedia specialist.
My Most Important question is. can I Run All Multimedia Softwares on
    "Apple MacBook Air MD760HNA"
like. 3d, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects and complete adobe suite.
Is there any problem with multimedia softwares if i buy "Apple MacBook Air MD760HNA" .
I visit at apple store and excutives suggest me to go with Macbook pro for Multimedia Softwares.
But my Budget is not for macbook pro. I can buy Macbook air Apple MacBook Air MD760HNA"
As I found the difference between air and pro is only about Graphics and clock speed.
I would like to know can I Run all my multimedia softwares on MacBook Air MD760HNA" successfully?
I would like to here an Expert advice because i am to buy within 2 days.
    Many Thanks in Advance

I run Adobe CS5 on my 2011 MBA with no difficulties and the 2013 models are significantly faster with improved Intel integrated graphics so your experience would be better. If your budget alllowed it, a computer with a faster processor and integrated graphics would improve your experience with 3D graphics (compositing would be faster) and with graphics post processing. But the MBA can do it.
I'd strongly recommend you upgrade it to 8GB and at least get the 256GB SSD. If you do any extensive video editing the drive will get full quickly so you'll also want a fast external drive to move data on and off the computer. Also a 13" is rather cramped to having a larger external display would be a plus.

  • How do I connect Macbook Air to Macbook via ethernet crossover cable?

    Hi all,
For the life of me, I'm having a lot of troubles connecting my Macbook Air to Macbook, here is what I've done so far:
    1. Turned on sharing in System preferences on both systems and given "read and write" access to "myself", "users" and "everyone".
    2. Then connected a ethernet cable to both macbook and macbook air (via original Apple USB ethernet)
    3. When I go to Finder > Shared on both systems, they say cannot open drop box insufficient privileges.
Please someone link to step by step tutorial of Mac OS X 10.5 sharing through ethernet cable or correct me on what I'm doing wrong, and I don't have firewire cable otherwise things would've easier .
    Thanks in advance!

You are probably over thinking the problem.
Do not use a crossover cable. Just connect the two machines directly with a standard ethernet cable and they will auto assign ip addresses and be accessible to each other. The ethernet chips in both machines will detect the cable, etc and it "just works".
Also your sharing settings do not need to be that open. I would recommend to pulling them back so that you are not giving the world access to your machine.

  • Can the new Macbook Air and Macbook Pro with retina display that run OS X Lion or Mountain Lion run Windows through bootcamp?

I was just wondering.. since the new macs have omitted the optical disk drives is it still possible to install windows on a mac running OSX Lion and Mountain Lion?

Yes. Read the Boot Camp Install instructions for the MacBook Air which also does not have an optical drive. Put Windows onto a thumb drive or external optical drive and make these bootable. Then follow the instructions for installation from the thumb drive or external optical drive.

  • Should I buy a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro?

    Hello,
I will buy a MacBook, but I do not know which one I should buy. I think the MacBook Air with 13'' and 128GB is good, but also the MacBook Pro with 13'' and 128GB with Retina. I do not need 256GB because I have a HDD with 1TB.
    Thanks for your help.
    (I am 17 years old.)

I have an external hdd also DONT DO IT buy the 256gb i thought I didn't need it either till it was to late my mb pro retina was still under warranty and I switched it for the 256gb. personally If you have money to throw into it and you would like to do some decent gaming get the macbook pro but if you can only afford the 128 gb SSD macbook pro get the 256gb air and if you want to throw some more punch into it get the I7 and this will all be around the price of a macbook pro retina. If you can afford it get the macbook pro the screen is amazing once you see it theres no going back. But the macbook air is also very nice and a better priced alternative. Hope you enjoy you're new laptop, whichever one you get there both great!
