New Macbook battery won't hold charge?

I recently bought a new OEM battery from an online reseller for my Core Duo (August 2006) white MacBook. I had it for a few weeks and it worked perfectly (3+ hours of battery life, as opposed to the 7 minutes I had been getting with the original battery, don't perma-charge!), and then it just stopped. If I unplug the AC adapter, it turns off after about a second, and if I start the computer without the adapter, it turns off after about two seconds.
I've tried resetting the SMC and reinstalling the firmware, and the computer still runs off of the old battery (albeit not for very long). I'm having the same problem in my BootCamp install of Windows 7 as well.

It seems like other people are having the same problem? Admittedly, it could just be a coincidence and I got a bad battery, but I thought I'd pop in to see before I RMA it.

I don't think the battery is your problem. Here's things to check:
Try using another MagSafe adapter and see if that helps.
Make sure the connectors between the MagSafe adapter & the computer is clean, as well as the connectors between the battery and the computer.
Sounds to me like you have a problem inside the computer and that's why it won't run on battery power.

  • OSX Upgrade and new software purchases slow down Mac and Battery won't hold charge?

    Any assistance appreciated:
I have recently upgraded my OSX from Snow Leopard, which I was quite happy with, and was ticking over very nicely.
    And, today, I have problems???
I was using Snow Leopard, I purchased Mainstage 2 for my musical work... Nice piece of Kit..
I then notice 'Apple', bring out Mainstage 3 about 10 days later???
I check out the spec, will not run on my OSX...
I then check out Mainstage 3 and find that it would be a better version than 2..
I then decide that the extra stuff in Mainstage 3 is worth the price of an OSX upgrade, and the newer Mainstage 3 version although I had recently purchased Ver 2..
I do the upgrade, seems to have worked fine...
I purchase Mainstage 3, get that installed, and the Xtra's.... What is that all about?
It took me well over 12 hrs to get those...
Any road up, I get everything installed and functioning....
    Now, my Mac is Slllooooow..
The Battery will not hold it's charge... Runs for only 2 hours MAX and then needs recharging???
The MacBook was bought only 18 month ago??? 2011 edition..
I have an IBM ThinkPad 240 and it still holds more charge than my Mac....
    Help appreciated Folks...
For the dosh I have paid to 'Apple', the product and software should operate and function better than this???
And to honest, I aint spending anymore, until 'Apple' give me some answers on my problems.

  • *new* 80GB, Battery won't hold a charge?

hey guys, i just got an 80gb and it won't hold a charge.
when it's plugged into my mac or the external charger it works fine but when i unplugged from either source it plays about 2 songs (showing full battery life) and then displays the low battery sign and then cuts off.
did i get a lemon? does it just need a new battery?
    please help if you can.

Not thinking there is a local handy apple store in iraq. Really thing I can suggest is you trying the five r's see here
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/. Not really much else at this point. Probably really is a service issue, but give the other a try. Maybe if you find somebody going back to the real world they can take it and have it serviced for you and send it back. Is there no way you can send it in using fpo/apo (not sure what they call it now adays) you can go online here and request service:http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or maybe send it back to a loved one they can exchange if for you and send it back. You can request service on line, use your home address and they will send the package to your home, then your family can send it into apple for you, or have them take it to 5th ave.
Sorry I can't be of more help and [b]thanks for what you are doing over there! Been there, done that, got the tshirt to prove it (viet nam 2nd rangers)

  • IPod Touch (5th Gen) Battery Won't Hold Charge

After the last update my iPod Touch 5th Gen will not hold a charge. I haven't had any problems with it until this 8.1.1 update. Yesterday I charged the battery up to full charge and  used it briefly to listen to music in my car however here it is the next day and the battery is dead again. It is NOT playing while not in my car. Meaning nothing should be running the battery down because it's not being used.  I know it's not playing because the volume is set to half way so I'd undoubtedly hear it if it was playing.  It just won't hold a charge and for no apparent reason. Any suggestions?

  • Satellite S55-A5255 Battery won't hold charge

Like the title says this S55-A5255 won't hold a charge. From what I've been reading and stuff that this battery isn't "user replaceable". Which can be done. The trouble I'm having is trying to find a battery for this laptop. I can't find it no where! All major retailers and computer techs tells me that they have no idea where I can purchase this battery. Toshiba sells the laptop but tells me they no longer replace the battery if it comes in to be repaired. Plus since this laptop is out of warranty I don't want to spend several hundred dollars to get one battery. Does anyone know the manufacturer that sells these batteries or know anyone that sells it?

That makes things difficult.   You can use your MBP as a 'desktop' with it connected with the power adapter but the performance will be degraded when the battery is totally discharged.  The only other option that I can think of is shipping it to an Apple repair location.
    Ciao.

  • New battery won't hold charge after short usage

     Hello everyone
I recently purchased a used HP nc6230 computer without a hard drive or battery. After putting a new battery and a hard drive into it I charged the battery installed the OS, windows XP pro, and used the system a few days and it worked fine. I followed the guidelines of the battery manufacturer to burn in or sync the battery pack without incident. Now a week later I turned the system on and it loaded windows, stayed on for about 2 minutes and then shut off. I hooked the charger to the system to charge the battery and the indicator light did not come on to show the battery was charging. I left it connected for about 20 minutes and tried to turn it on again with no success. Could this just be a defective battery or is there a problem withe this particular model computer? Any ideas? Thanks.

You just have an older battery that has limited runtime. Losing 32% in 30 minutes indicates you might get maybe 1:20 runtime which is about normal for a 2 or 3 year old battery. I suspect what happened before is that the battery completely discharged which is not really good for it and sometimes causes the whole system to lock up. If it ever happens again, remove the battery and do the hard reset before plugging in the AC adapter. I suspect you just need a new battery. Where did you get this battery? It may be "new" in the sense that it was never previously installed in a laptop but batteries for that laptop might be as much as 4-5 years old and they do lose power and capability just sitting on a shelf.

  • IPad battery won't hold charge

My iPad is only 6 months old and recently stopped holding a charge.  I've followed all the help topics and pointers but nothing works.  The iPad goes from 80-90% down to 2% overnight while its turned off. Does this mean I need to send it back to Apple?

    Hi Fred,
Thanks for the suggestion.  I will keep that in mind - I actually saw another response on this forum after I posted my question that may solve my problem.  It was a suggestion to go in and turn off all of my applications, which I had no idea were actively running even when the iPad is turned off.
The user said they had gone into the Apple store and an employee told them about how the newest release of the OS was doing this and that by double clicking on the iPad when coming out of sleep mode will bring up all the applications at the bottom of the screen.  Then by touching and holding one application, they will begin to shake and also shows a + and - sign if they are active.  I clicked the - sign on all my applications except Settings and recharged the iPad again.  So far today it has not run down at all each time I check it.  It made sense to me since the only thing that changed on my usage is how many downloaded programs I have added to it.  All of them were actively running.
I only wish Apple would supply this information at the time they provide the updates to the OS.
I wouldn't rely on that.  The drain that you're describing is significant.  Further, the app listing at the bottom is a "Recents Tray."  It lists all of the apps that have been used recently but they are not necessarily running and, in fact, are probably not running.
I have two easy suggestions, one or both of which you may have already done.  Then, if you're still having difficulties, I'd go to Apple.  A hardware failure is not unreasonable.
    1. Charge the iPad overnight using the charger that came with the iPad.  Do not use an iPhone charger or an iPod charger and do not use a computer USB port.  Then, operate the iPad until it shuts down automatically.  Ignore any low battery warnings that may appear.  This doesn't do anything for the battery but it ensures that the battery meter is giving correct indications.
    2. I don't fully understand what the System Reset does but I've found that it cures many ills.  It's easy, quick and harmless:  Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  A System Reset does not remove any apps, music, movies, etc. nor does it cause any settings to revert back to default.

If it charges, but does not hold the charge when disconnected, the lithium battery is probably worn out.

ssince downloading the new software version, battery discharges at a rapid rate.

    my macbook pro won't hold a charge for more than a day...do I need a new battery?  I have a 13" early 2011 model.

A: did you leave most of the time or always plugged in?
B: did you often drain the battery very low?
If so, then thats the issue
    From Apple on batteries:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1446
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/
    Storing your MacBook
If you are going to store your MacBook away for an extended period of time, keep it in a cool location (room temperature roughly 22° C or about 72° F). Make certain you have at least a 50% charge on the internal battery of your Macbook if you plan on storing it away for a few months; recharge your battery to 50% or so every six months roughly if being stored away. If you live in a humid environment, keep your Macbook stored in its zippered case to prevent infiltration of humidity on the internals of your Macbook which could lead to corrosion.
    Considerations:
Your battery is subject to chemical aging even if not in use. A Lithium battery is aging as soon as its made, regardless.
In a perfect (although impractical) situation, your lithium battery is best idealized swinging back and forth between 20 and 85% SOC (state of charge) roughly.
Further still how you discharge the battery is far more important than how it is either charged or stored short term, and more important long term that cycle counts.
Ultimately counting charge cycles is of little importance.  Abuse in discharging (foremost), charging, and storing the battery and how it affects battery chemistry is important and not the ‘odometer’ reading, or cycle counts on the battery.
Everything boils down to battery chemistry long term, and not an arbitrary number, or cycle count.
Keep your macbook plugged in when near a socket since in the near end of long-term life, this is beneficial to the battery.
    Peace

Either the power brick is damaged, or the charging circuit is on the blink, or both. Either way, a trip to the Apple Store or the Apple Authorized Service Provider is in order, as this ain't no bargain basement toy.
In the meantime, can attempt an SMC Reset to see if it helps.
