New macbook cannot join network

I have an imac that is connected to the internet via airport extreme base station. My service provider is Surewest fiberoptic which is connected directly to the base station. No problems getting online with imac. I just bought a macbook and cannot configure it to join my network. I have the settings on the imac airport to "no security", but when I try to join network it says that my network needs a password. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have exactly the same problem. Even more, I had the Airport Extreme protected with a password and my iBook would connect to the network with no problem with the password. But then I decided to eliminate the password and to have free access to the network, but the MacBook is still prompting for a password.
Any clues?
Thanks,
Cantautor

    Thanks.
I'm reluctant to wade into this but I noticed that if Mactracker is to be believed, the Early and Late MacBook Pro have the same Model Identifier, which would suggest that the SL installer for the Early MBP might see the Late MBP, which came with Lion, as close enough for government work. While the SL installer wouldn't necessarily be 100% suitable for the Lion Machine and probably wouldn't allow installing over the existing Lion partition, I can imagine it working on a clean partition or external USB or Firewire drive. A 10.6.8 combo updater could then configure the SL installation for the MBP it's actually on.

  • New macbook - "Error joining the Airport Network"

    Hey,
Just bought a new macbook which comes with an Airport Extreme card. This has worked perfectly with my home router (Belkin Mimo) and my work router (unknown) as well as in various train stations and public places. However I'm currently staying at my parents house and I can't connect to their router (3Com Office Connect ADSL Wireless 11g Firewall Router). Originally I thought this was an encryption issue - my parents use a WEP password rather than more sophisticated encryption. However even after making it an open network I still get this familiar error message. I was originally able to log onto a neighbouring "Apple Network" which made me think it was just down to this particular router however I can now longer connect to this. Is Airport Extreme compatible with all networks or only the newest? Are there Mac/PC issues here? Or do you think I need to get my macbook to Apple to see if the Extreme card is faulty? I can still use this router via ethernet. I'm up to date on updates and tried most of the tricks suggested in previous threads regarding this error message.

Very useful answer Duane, Thanks a lot, a real sport that you are, you really provided us a lot of help with your answer
    On-topic:
I am having the same problem as you guys have (using a macbook pro intel-based machine) and the odd thing is in my case i got this working for some time but now it's not willing to connect whatever I do.
    Here's the story:
Immediately after I've bought the mac I used it on an open wi-fi network and it worked. When I got back home I tried to do connect to my private wi-fi router which had wep encription but the airport didn't want to connect it just stayed stone-dead, didn't even want to accept my wep password. I also have a PC& a Dell laptop at home which went flawlessly with my wi-fi network so I thought it might be the OS X fault.
So i installed bootcamp and windows XP Pro SP2 but i reached the same thing: airport doesn't want to connect to wep-encripted wi-fi network.
I then thought - let's try with an open wi-fi network: no result.
I then did the ultimate thing: hard-reset the wi-fi router and I re-configured it as an open wi-fi and finally got the bloody mac airport working. Thought this is it, I would have to live with this but after 2 weeks working time, now that I reach home from work (where I connect my mac on a lan) I can't make the mac's airport connecting to my wi-fi network whatever I do.
It connects though if I boot on the bootcamp windows partition.
Does anyone has any clue how to solve this issue??? I really got to the point of willing to hammer my mac for this. It's really unacceptable for such an expensive machine not to be able to work out a bloody wi-fi device.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • Why won't my iMac find my new MacBook on the network for Migration?

My older iMac (7,1) can't find my new MacBook Pro on the network. I've tried two different WiFi networks. I've ensured both machines are current in their SW. I can't use Ethernet because I didn't buy the Thunderbolt to Ethernet connector. The MacBook sees the iMac, but the iMac just keeps searching and after a while the MacBook displays a message that the iMac is not responding.
I believe I'm following the Migration Assistant directions properly, starting the app on the iMac and selecting migrate to a Mac, and then starting Migration Assistant on the MacBook and selecting migrate from a Mac or PC.
It used to be that I could connect the two via FireWire and start up the older Mac while holding down the "t" key and the newer machine would see the older machine as a disk drive. Without FireWire on the new machine could I use a USB connection the same way?

    Lessons Learned:
Thunderbolt to FireWire is only for FireWire 800 so doesn't help connect to older FireWire 400 disks. (Apple Store employee says there is a FireWire 800 to FireWire 400 converter, they just didn't have it in stock.) My iMac has a FireWire 800 port, but I didin't have a FireWire 800 cable. (I'm opposed to buying one time use things, like the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter, FireWire 800 to 400 adapter, or a FireWire 800 cable.)
Be sure to pay attention to migration direction. You can migrate either direction, but you probably don't want to migrate from a new machine to an old one.
If you have the same user id on both machine you cannot migrate into the user id you're logged into on the new machine. Might be better to first create a dummy id on the new machine, migrate all old id's over, and then delete the dummy id. Obviously I didn't do this.
If you have a wireless router with multiple ethernet ports you can connect the two machines to the router, ignore the wireless network, and connect via ethernet. I could not connect the two machines just running an ethernet cable between the two. (I think someone suggested that.)

  • New macbook crashes my network

    Hi all,
I bought a new macbook pro for my wife and since then, I've been having trouble with my airport extreme (in use for a couple years with no issues). I use a fairly new macbookpro, but run 10.5.8. She can connect without a problem, but when she puts the computer to sleep it seems to cause all other connections to fail. The modem is fine, because I can plug in with a ethernet cord and it's still connected. A quick on/off of the power fixes it, but this is a pain. Any thoughts?

Hi, stevemurray. Welcome to the forums!
If I understand correctly, your network setup looks like this:
Internet <===> DSL or Cable Modem <===> AirPort <~~~> Computers
    ( <===> represents a wired connection, and <~~~> represents a wireless one.)
    Is this correct?
If so, open AirPort Utility and select your Extreme in the sidebar. Press "Manual Setup" and authenticate if necessary. Press "Internet" in the toolbar. For connection sharing, select "Share a public IP address." Press "Update" and allow your Extreme to restart.
    Does this solve the problem?

  • Successfully setup Airport- devices cannot join network

I've set up my Airport Extreme (green indicator light):
I created a network & a guest network. I cannot join either network with my wireless devices (they have no problem with other networks).
Is it incorrect for me to use the passwords I created in Airport Utility?

I cheated: I did a copy-and-paste and the password worked. Unfortunately I can't do that with Apple TV. Is it possible that some letters (characters) generated by Keychain aren't compatible with 'remote' input?

  • Get message "cannot join network or incorrect password

Neew Iphone 4 does not connect to my secured wifi network.  I am using the weakest WEP security.  All my other devices, including my old Iphone and laptop connect without problems.  I get theses messages, "unable to join *********network" or, "incorrect password".  I see from postings that this is a common problem.
    Thanks for any help.
    angel222

I have found the real problem, but not the solution.
In my router I only give access to computers on an access list. Of course the IPAD is not yet there. I have to enter the MAC address of the IPAD. But where do I find that MAC address?

  • Got an error stating cannot join network.

So I recently got a used clamshell iBook Tangerine G3 and it came with an airport card. The airport found my airport extreme network, however when I try to connect to my network it said error joining network. Why? Is the card not compatible with my airport extreme base station? Do I need to change something?

Try disabling security and seeing if it works.
If it can connect to the network, then you know it's a problem with the Airport software or how the OS handles security.
If it doesn't connect without any security, then it's most likely a bad card.
Also, if it doesn't connect, you may want to try connecting it via Ethernet (if possible) and checking for updates - I know if it was recently wiped and the OS reloaded that there is at least an Airport update, along with possibly several OS updates, depending on the version of OS9 you have installed. One or more of the updates may fix your problem if it was a bug in the original software.

  • Networking issue with new Macbook - cannot get IP address from DHCP router

Hello all, I've seen this problem posted a few times and been having the same problem with my new aluminum MacBook. Here's the story:
When connecting to my network at home, I get the message "Airport has a self-assigned IP and may not be able to connect to the internet." I've been able to connect a few times, but anytime it sleeps or I shut down I have the same problem. When I'm out and about, it has no problem connecting to other networks.
On the network in which I cannot connect, there are 2 other macs and two PCs that do NOT have any problem connecting. Macs are all running 10.5.5.
Router in a 2Wire and uses DHCP. ISP is AT&T.
I've tried rebooting the router, manually assigned an IP address, restarting, updating software. Nothing seems to work.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? This is kinda making me crazy.

    I've also tried:
    1) Creating a new location in network prefs.
    2) Zapping PRAM
    3) rebooting router many time.
    4) putting a $ in front of the hex password
    5) deleting all of the plists that I've seen recommended.
    6) Starting in safe mode
    7) Renewing IP
    8) Shutting off firewall

  • Macbook cannot join Airport nework

I have set up an Airport Extreme base station. During the setup process it established a primary network and a guest network. It connects to my G5 desktop and provides internet access. However when I try to connect to the network from my Macbook (Power PC G4 with OS X 10.4.6) I get a message that: "There was an error joining the Airport network 'James Reed's Network'".
It would seem the Powerbook obviously sees the Airport Extreme base station since the primary network, guest network, etc. show in the status bar on the laptop. But when I select a network to join I get the error message.
I have a suspicion I am missing something fundamental, but do not want to fool around changing settings. I don't find the information on Pages 22 and 23 of the setup guide to be particularly helpful or clear.
Do I need to create a new network between the G5 desktop and the G4 Powerbook?
And, similarly, if I wish to connect printers (two of them now connect to the G5 via a hub) do I need to create yet another network with the hub connected to the Airport Extreme USB port?
    I would appreciate some guidance.

Thanks for your patience. The fix stemmed from your observation concerning the age of the Powerbook and the security password. Since the Airport Extreme was new, I talked with an Apple tech who resolved the connection problem as follows.
    1. On the Powerbook, go to the Finder Symbol in the Dock and there select and open the Macintosh hard disk. On the hard disk, go to Library. Go to Preferences. Drag the "System Configuration" folder to the desktop.
    2. On the G5, open the airport utility and check manual setup. In manual setup go to "wireless" and set wireless security to "WPA/WPA2 Personal". Click Update.
    3. On the Powerbook G4 in the status bar, open the network list and click on the network you want to join. Change the security setting to "WPA/WPA2 Personal" then enter the proper password.
The connection went through! Then drag the "System Configuration" folder from the desktop to the trash.
The Apple tech explained that, on older computers such as my Powerbook, there is difficulty in recognizing the new security setup employed in the latest Airport Extreme.
I believe I've recalled all the steps correctly. Perhaps this information can benefit others with older computers facing the same connection problem.

  • AirPort Express Cannot Join Network

    Hello all,
I've tried searching and can't find this exact issue; please forgive me it's a dup.
I just purchased an AirPort Express to use with several Windows XP machines for AirTunes and printer sharing. I already have wifi set up using a 2Wire 270HG modem/wireless router.
Using the AirPort Utility, I can see the AX and go through the steps to "Connect to my current wireless network" and then "Join my wireless network". I give it my network name, password, etc., and it reprograms the AX but is then never able to connect to in after the restart.
I initially thought this was due to using WEP (even though adding $ before my passkey did not help), but I have since switched to WPA-PSK and am having the same results. Admittedly, I wasn't sure which of the WPA settings in the AirPort Utility to select, but I've tried both with no luck.
I have reset the AX and run through the setup at least 10 times! Really not sure where to go from here, except to turn off all security on the router and just use MAC address filtering to keep out the neighbors... but this seems like a pretty bad system.
    Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks in advance,
    Drew

Well, it looks like I've been wasting my time.
At the end of running the Utility wizard, I get the error:
"An error occurred while trying to access the base station. Make sure you network connection is valid and try again."
It then tells me it was unable to find the base station after restarting and forces me to quit the AirPort Utility. When I restart the Utility, it can then see the base station and everything works fine.
So, basically, I've spent the whole night troubleshooting a meaningless error message when everything was working fine.
Great. Can anyone explain why it's reporting this error if everything is fine?
    Thanks again.

  • Cannot join network with ipod touch

Please help - I just got the ipod touch and got the january software update. I want to have email & web surfing capability. When I try to join my home network, it asks for a password. I've tried my wireless network key, and my computer password. Nothing works. Does ANYONE know what I should do? Does this have anything to do with wireless network settings? Servers? Addresses? What information should I be entering onto the touch?
    Thanks!

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It wants your wireless network key when it asks for a password. It is worth proving the connectivity without security enabled but you don't want to remain like that for long.
A WEP network key (plain text) must be 5 characters long for 40bit WEP or 13 characters long for 128bit WEP. If the WEP key is in hexadecimal (10 or 26 characters) try adding a $ infront of the key.
Actually WEP can be cracked in a couple of miniutes so I'd advise switching your router to use WPA encryption. WPA is much more secure and you can use any password/key you wish.
If you post the make/model number of your wireless router we can probably advise more.
    cheers
