New Macbook CPU Whine? Wasn't this MBP only?

I bought my updated macbook last week (Black, C2D 2.16 Ghz, 2GB Ram) and I noticed that the CPU whine that bothered me so much in my macbook pro is on my macbook as well!
The photobooth trick works.. but I wish this could just be eliminated once and for all..
Any suggestions? And does anyone else have it?

I have covered this topic extensively for close to 1 year now. I've come to a conclusion that all MacBooks exhibit this problem to some degree. I've had my Logic Board exchanged in hopes to get rid of the problem - but no way - its still here.
I've learned to deal with it in the following manner:
1. I'm rarely in a completely quiet rooms - so in most cases I dont get bothered by the noise
2. If I need to work in a quiet room - I use the Photobooth trick (force quit Photobooth - put comp to sleep - wake it up)
3. I got Windows XP on bootcamp - I do most of my websurfing with the new Internet Explorer - and as most of you know - the CPU doesn't whine under Windows.
The fact that CPU whine is completly eliminated when using Windows Xp means that the whole problem could be solved with a simple patch from Apple. However - Apple will not release any such patch until more people complain directly to them.

  • New MacBook Pro - Storage in "About this Mac"

I just got a new MacBook Pro (256 GB storage) and set it up as a new computer (rather than migrating from previous computer).  I am curious about the amounts showing up in the Storage tab of About this Mac.  Here's my current allocation:
    Apps: 11 GB
    Other: 7 GB
    Audio: 1 GB
    Photos: 900 MB
    Movies: 400 MB
I'm most interested in Audio, Photos and Movies since I haven't added any to the device nor have I synced with iCloud.  Perhaps they are files that are pre-loaded on the OS?
Does this look normal for a right out-of-the box MacBook Pro?

    Parts of OS X.

  • Is there a way to connect the new MacBook Air to an audio interface that only has FireWire 400 input?

I recently acquired the new MacBook Air for my performance rig and have discovered that there is no way to connect it to either of my audio interfaces [both have FireWire 400 ports only.  Is there an adaptor for this?  I can't seem to find one.

Later on this month, both Belkin and Sonnet have indicated that they will have means to adapt the Thunderbolt port to the Firewire 800 interface.
Sonnet's solution will be an simple adapter, while Belkins will be a more full featured dock, with a few ports, including USB 3.0
There is no indication what the price of either will be, but both of them should provide a relatively easy means to then adapt to Firewire 400, as such cable adapters are already readily available at a nominal price.
Apple has the Sonnet adapter mentioned on their website, so it may be likely that the Apple online store will be carrying them when they become available.
As far as an adapter from USB 2.0 to Firewire, there have been only a scant few adapters available in the past, and all that I have seen were propretary in nature, only usable for the particular device they were fashioned for. I have not seen any that were usable in a general sense. Look at the reviews of any such products you might find in this regard. You will find no satisfied users.

  • Headphone jack not working on new Macbook Pro what is causing this?

My 17 inch Macbook Pro is less than two weeks old. The headphone jack does not recognize the headphones about half the time. This occurs with several pairs of headphones and yes, they are ther right size. This is really frustrating on a brand new 3500 dollar machine. What is causing this? It almost seems as if the headphones cannot make contact due to the fact that the connection is too far recessed. I don't live near an Apple store so dealing with this is going to be a P.I.T.A. Anyone have any ideas on how I might fix this issue? Thanks!

Hi, and thanks for your reply. I didn't have a red light emitting from the jack. I had already checked in the sound preferences to make sure the settings were correct. The headphones were not being recognized. This was not working with several differing sets of headphones. I made a phone appt. with Applecare. The laptop PRAM was reset and it works. There is still a bit of a delay when I plug in the headphones before they are recognized and I do feel the port is just a bit "off" as the no headphones plug all the way in. They seem to just sit almost flush but, not quite. However, resetting it resolved the issue to a satifactory level. Applecare said the issue was that not enough power was getting to that function on my laptop. They gave me the case number and I can use it if I have any further problem when I take the laptop in with me to any Apple service center. I was quite satisfied with how this was handled by Apple and if I have anymore issues will follow up.
I love  this laptop but, even though this is working now I do feel that port is somewhat recessed a bit much.
I also want to add that this is my first Mac and despite having had this issue I was extremely impressed with the Applecare call that I got to help resolve this. One of the reasons I went with a Mac was the reputation for service Apple has. I was fed up with Sony to the hilt. I was glad I went with this Mac despite the headphone issue because had I still been with Sony, I'd have been give a major run around to deal with this issue. So far, Apple has tried everything possible to help me with this and assured me should I have any further issue they will immediately resolve it or give me a new machine. WAY better than dealing with Sony! I do not regret going with this MAC headphone issue or not!

  • Brand New MacBook Air 2012 Fan Always On with Only a Few Programs Open!

Got this awesome machine a few days ago.  Everything is perfect except the fact that the fans are on 24/7!  I have nearly no applications running and I've cheked the activity monitor and nearly everything is at 0% and the programs that aren't are around 5% (or less).  I've got a protective case on the computer and I've taken it off and tested the situation out and without the cover the MacBook Air still runs the fans at full speed.
As I'm typing this, the fans are just blasting.  I never new a computer fan could get so annoying!

  • I have a new MacBook.  In mail, my sent mail only remains on my computer for 2 weeks.  Can I go somewhere to lengthen the time it remains in the file?

This is a 2014 MacBook Pro 15 inch Retina with OS 10.9.4.  I am unable to find out where to modify the length of time I can store "sent" mail.  I would like to change the setting from 2 weeks to "never remove".  I regularly find myself searching for previously sent email and am also constantly individually eliminating old sent mail.

Open Mail preferences and select Mailbox behaviors and check the box marked sent and choose NEVER.

Could we try a few more words ?
Are we talking about just the iMessages account ?
Do you have AIM or Jabber Accounts set up as well ?
    Are they getting "Messages" ?
In Messages Menu > Preferences > Accounts > iMessage account is the "Enable this Account" box ticked and logged in ?
Do you mean you can Receive iMessages but not Send them ?

  • New Temp. Solution to CPU Whine

New temporary solution to CPU whine: MagicNoiseKiller.
This program was created by the same guy that created QuietMBP. This program is much better than QuietMBP. QuietMBP causes the computer to get hotter and forces the fans to go on and off (the mooing). MagicNoiseKiller does not use any processor power because it quits right after it loads. It does not get hot. It is the best solution so far to eliminate the CPU whine noise. Read more about it here: http://www.red-sweater.com/blog/108/macbook-pro-noise-i-believe-in-miracles
    Download MagicNoiseKiller here: http://www.red-sweater.com/blog/downloads/MagicNoiseKiller.zip
With this program, I am extremely happy about my investment on this sweeeet laptop. It is silent as heaven.
Instructions to make it run at startup:
Go to System Preferences->Accounts->Login Items->Add MagicNoiseKiller

No way I'm gonna download the OS X update. I love MNK!!! I'm going to wait with the 10.4.6 download 'til MNK's updated. Besides, the new X update doesn't seem to fix the big problems. It's not worth it! I recommend MBP users (except for the ones who already did) to not install the new update until MNK supports 10.4.6.

  • T420s - experiencing CPU whine that is getting worse

    Hello there!
I have a Lenovn T420s with an i7-2640M CPU @ 2.80 Ghz, Optimus, and 8gb RAM.  I got this laptop as a replacement from Lenovo since they severely damaged my other T420s while trying to repair the bezel.
This laptop is experiencing CPU whine that is getting worse and worse.  There was no CPU whine at all whatsoever when I received this replacement in December, but now it shows up whenever I scroll up and down a browser window, click on a link, or do other normal tasks on the computer.
It happens regardless of if I am on battery or using the AC adapter.  I've also read the other T410/510 page about the CPU whine and saw that the only fix was to get a new motherboard, CPU, and GPU.  I also saw this post: T420s High pitch whine but it doesn't look like it has been updated for a while.
I have a 3 year warranty on this laptop, but I am hesitant to send it in without knowing if a good fix has been found.  I already had a terrible experience with sending the laptop in for service, and had an even worse experience when the tech came on-site to work on it.
Anyone else with this problem?  Has Lenovo come out with a solution?
    Thanks!

    Hi all,
I'm experiencing coil whine or "CPU whine" on my T420s. It's completely intolerable.
Rather than trying to describe this noise, I've put together the start of a sound album documenting it. Please listen: http://soundcloud.com/discostrings/sets/t420s-coil-whine
I suffered through 2.5 years with this problem on my T410. I sent it in once to resolve the problem, but it wasn't fixed. I figured the issue would be resolved in subsequents ThinkPad generations and I'd put up with it until it was time to upgrade.
But the whine on my T420s is much worse. It is impossible for me to use it in a quiet environment. But beyond that, some of the tones and clicking it makes are audible from feet away even in an environment with air conditioners running and people talking. I've tried (and recorded) every important combination of power settings. With all power management turned off in the BIOS and with the CPU limited to its lowest setting, it is ALMOST tolerable (but not quite).
I am willing to do whatever it takes to fix this problem--I do not mind parting with the laptop for a while. I would be happy to send it in for an engineer to look at and fix. I would be happy to take it somewhere. I would be happy to attempt to fix it to my own satisfaction if I am guaranteed it will not void my warranty. If none of those are options, I guess I'll send it in for motherboard replacements until I get a good one. But I'm going to have this fixed. Because this beautifully-engineered machine is impossible for me to use as it is.
As I understand it, coil whine results from faulty or low-quality coils or capacitors on the motherboard that resonate at different power levels. Unless this is from a rare bad batch (which I doubt because of my experience with my T410), this is a result of using bargain-basement coils and capacitors or not adequately testing the units from different suppliers. It's probably the matter of a few dollars or cents in manufacturing the computer. Beyond that, it can often be fixed with a drop of glue.
I put the recording album up to demonstrate that this is an actual problem, and to familiarize those who haven't heard it with the problem. I hope it helps other in diagnosing the coil whine.
Please let me know the best way to proceed to get this fixed. Thanks.

  • My brand New Macbook Pro with Retina Display is slow.

Just today I got a brand new Macbook Pro with the Retina Display. Last week I got the same one except the base model ($1300). Today I decided I wanted a much faster one with better storage so I decided to exchange it for the higher end model ($1500) with 8gb ram and 256gb ssd. When I went to speedtest.net, the results were really dissappointing. I got 65 ping, 15mbps for download speed, and 2mbps for upload speed. My previous new Macbook got a 13 ping, 20 mbps for download speed, and 6 mbps for upload speed. I've restarted my computer many times but got the same results (even with different browsers). Does anybody know why is this?

    Hi gluMoster,
It's frustrating when laying out your hard earned cash on technology to find out that it just doesn't fix your issues. Fortunately it sounds to me that your issue is your network and/or internet service provider. The "speedtest" only checks your connectivity to various servers on the internet, and doesn't really test out your laptop.
For a hardware(laptop/desktop) test I recommend geekbench which can be found at http://www.primatelabs.com/geekbench/ the tools here will test your machines processor and give you an idea of your hardwares speed.
To remedy your problem I would first check your wireless router (I am assuming your laptop connects to the internet wirelessly) and see if it is atleast N capable. I see routers all the time that are B/G that get old and just can't deliver the speed that new and added network devices and websites require to function frictionless. If your router is an N or better yet an AC, then we'd need to look at your modem or your service provider. If you have ATT DSL, there have been reports, somewhat confirmed, that they are dialing down things on the DSL side in order to persuade their customers to move to Uverse, but you didn't hear that from me
If your router is ok, and the modem too take your laptop and sit it relatively close to your wireless router/access point and run the speedtest again. It could be that some new piece of furniture, or maybe even cordless phone is blocking the wireless signal to where you use your laptop most.
    Best of luck,
    damon

  • Apple Bluetooth Keyboard + new MacBook Pro incompatible on wake from sleep

    Hello all
I've seen a few discussions on the web re this issue, but no resolutions.
I've been using a 4 year-old (white) Apple Bluetooth Keyboard for some time with my Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro and never had an issue with it. Just upgraded to a new Core i5 Unibody MacBook Pro and I'm having problems.
Everything's fine on startup but as soon as my MBP goes to sleep and I wake it back up, I get repeating keystrokes (even though I'm not touching any keys) and the keyboard is unusable until I physically turn it off and then on again.
Just to preempt the responses I've seen to this issue elsewhere: (1) the keyboard's batteries are good, (2) the keyboard still operates perfectly if I associate it with the old MBP, but as soon as I associate it back to the new one the issues are still there, (3) there is nothing causing radio interference around my desk (and as I said it works fine with the older mac).
Does anyone know of any bluetooth issues on new MacBook Pros that could cause this?.
Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help with this issue.
    Darren

It's not a solution more an observation, but the newer bluetooth (aluminium) keyboards and magic trackpads do not exhibit this behaviour (so it looks like it's specific to that older keyboard for some reason)

  • Strange wifi problem on a brand-new MacBook Pro

Hey there, I'm new here. Desperation has got the better of me, and I hope I can get some advice.
So, last sunday I bought a brand new 13" MacBookPro with 2.8g i7 processor and 10.7.2 OS (I can't update to 10.7.4 because System Update tells me the download has been tampered with or corrupted after I waited 2 hours for it to finish, but I'm trying a direct download from the website). Here's the exact product: http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MacBook-MD314LL-13-3-Inch-VERSION/dp/B005CWIZ4O/ref= sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1340301247&sr=8-5&keywords=macbook+pro+13
Everything is all perfect except for a strange wifi problem. Note that the wifi does not turn-on or off, it doesn't disconnect after 'sleep', it doesn't get less speed, it doesn't constantly leave a preferred connection (once I chose my home wifi it always connects to it no problem). The wifi bar is always full. What is wrong is that the internet is kinda 'glitchy'. The best metaphor I can think of is that it's like a car that has to be pushed down the road before the engine can start. Please, bear with me because this is kinda hard to explain and I'm not good at tech lingos.
One of the symptoms is browsing can get really slow and inconsistent, almost as if the wifi gets turned off in the middle of browsing. For example: if I look something up on Google and then open 5 new tabs, probably only 2 or 3 of those tabs will eventually load while the other two will not get past the long 'http:.......google.....etc etc' address and will eventually show one of those 'error loading page because there's no Internet connection' notice. This happens a lot. Sometimes I have to refresh/retry loading a page a couple of times before it finally loads, then usually everything will get back to normal and I will be able to open multiple tabs with no problem, but in a couple of minutes I would try to open another site and the problem will start again.
So I tried to see how it does with downloading using iGetter. Fortunately I also have a Macbook (white-plastic casing one) and my brother has an old 2006 MacbookPro so I can compare. With those two older Apples iGetter starts receiving data in less than 8 seconds after I click Start, while my brand-new Macbook Pro can take up to 15-20 seconds, sometimes it doesn't even start at all and I have to re-click the start button. But once the download actually starts (on my new MacBook Pro), it downloads like normal, it doesn't stop and the speed is also as good as I can get. Strange huh? Hence, like a car that has to be pushed before the engine starts.
I also tried 'speed testing' from a website with all 3 laptops. On my old MacBook and my brother's MacBook pro, once I click 'begin test' it takes only a couple of seconds of 'ping' before the download/upload speed measurements start, but with my new MacBook Pro (just like with iGetter) it takes up to almost a minute before the measurements start, sometimes it won't start at all and I have to re-start the test.
Well, thanks for reading. And hope you can help me shed some light into this. Because it is really preventing me from really enjoying my new MacBook Pro. And if this is most likely a hardware problem, I'd better get back to the store and try to get it replace or something while it's only been 5 days. *cheers*

Hey guys.. Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, I bought the MacBook in Indonesia where there are no such thing as an AppleCare. The only option is to leave the Apple product to one of the 'Authorized Apple care centre' and have whoever do whatever to it without guarantee of success. As for returning it and getting a brand new one, I also don't know if there is such a deal here, but that's actually a good idea, will try to go to the store tomorrow. Although, I'm worried that the problem might be with OSX Lion or something and getting a new one won't help.
mark75090, I've tried resetting the router when I first noticed te problem, didn't work though. I've checked my new MacBook's wi-fi (option+click wifi bar) and it says 'PHY Mode: 802.11g', so does my MacBook and the old MacBook Pro. I don't know what those mean though, and I don't know whether or not my router is an N., can you tell me more please.. I have tried with the other two turned off, and only the new MacBook using the wi-fi but the problem persists. I have also tried connecting directly to the router, but as I described, the problem is too subtle for me to notice the difference.
Also, if I create a brand new Wi-Fi connection in network preferences and connect to my router through the new Wi-Fi profile, the problem seems to be gone for an hour or so, then it always comes back though. I have also just finally installed 10.7.4, but it doesn't help either.

  • How do I sync my iPhone and its contents to my new MacBook Pro?

    Hi all.
I've just bought my first MacBook Pro and I'm very happy with it.
I'm just trying to set up iTunes with my iPhone which I've had over a year.
The problem is that iTunes isn't detecting all of the apps currently on my iPhone; only the recent purchases/downloads I've made using the new MacBook Pro.
I assume this is something to do with the fact that my iPhone is probably still 'synced' with my old Dell which is now dead.
How do I make it so that my new MacBook Pro and iPhone talk to one another without losing all of my data/settings/layout etc of everything on my iPhone?
    Thanks in advance!

By design, the iPhone will sync itunes content with one computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL itunes content being first erased from your phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. This is a design feature and cannot be overridden. Because you are replacing your computer, your phone will see this computer as a "new" computer. The itunes content sync is one way: computer to phone. If you have photos that were synced to your phone or music ripped on your own that were not backed up, you will first have to extract them from your phone using third party software, before you do anything else, as Apple makes no provision to do so:
    http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php
Once you've done that, do the following in the order specified:
    1. Disable auto sync when an iPod/iPhone is connected under Preferences>Devices in itunes.
    2. Make sure you have one contact & one event in the supported applications(Address Book, iCal) on your computer. These entries can be fake, doesn't matter, the important point is that these programs not be empty.
    3. Connect your phone, iTunes running, do not sync at this point.
    4. Store>Authorize this computer.
    5. File>Transfer Purchases(To make sure all purchased content on your phone will be in your itunes library).
    6. Right click in the device pane & select reset warnings.
    7. Right click again and select backup.
    8. Right click again & select restore from backup, select the backup you just made. When prompted to create another backup, decline.
    9. This MUST be followed by a sync to restore your itunes content, which you select from the various tabs, You'll get a popup regarding your contacts & calendars asking to merge or replace, select merge.
You should be good to go.

  • Need Help Connecting New MacBook Pro with Wireless Network Password

    Hi Linksys Community,
I would like to ask for your help and advice.
I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro, OS X, Version 10.8.3.
I need to setup a password to the wireless internet network (I've successfully done this)
    I have a Wireless G,  WRT54G Router.
When I setup the password, I'm not able to connect to the internet with my new MacBook Pro, which is running Mac OS X Version 10.8.3.  I get the message 'cannot connect to Internet, connection timeout) However, I'm able to connect to the internet with an older MacBook Pro, and my iPad. The password works fine with other models.
Would anyone be able to help me troubleshoot what is going on, or how I can solve this problem?
I would like to be able to have a password on my network, and use the internet with my new MacBook Pro.
I have read about manually adding in the MAC address of computers, and setting up a Wireless MAC fiter.
Does anyone think this would solve the problem?  if so, how can I find out the MAC address of my MacBook Pro?
Thanks in advance for you help and time!

    Hi,
    Thanks for your response.
Yes, my computer connects when your network is open (no password set)?
    I used WPA Pre-Shared Key.
Do you know how I could check if my new MacBook Pro is compatible with this?
    Thanks!
