New macbook crashes my network
Hi all,
I bought a new macbook pro for my wife and since then, I've been having trouble with my airport extreme (in use for a couple years with no issues). I use a fairly new macbookpro, but run 10.5.8. She can connect without a problem, but when she puts the computer to sleep it seems to cause all other connections to fail. The modem is fine, because I can plug in with a ethernet cord and it's still connected. A quick on/off of the power fixes it, but this is a pain. Any thoughts?
Hi, stevemurray. Welcome to the forums!
If I understand correctly, your network setup looks like this:
Internet <===> DSL or Cable Modem <===> AirPort <~~~> Computers
( <===> represents a wired connection, and <~~~> represents a wireless one.)
Is this correct?
If so, open AirPort Utility and select your Extreme in the sidebar. Press "Manual Setup" and authenticate if necessary. Press "Internet" in the toolbar. For connection sharing, select "Share a public IP address." Press "Update" and allow your Extreme to restart.
Does this solve the problem?

Then what is this?
MBP Model 8.2 i7 2.2 SMC version 1.69f3.
Really I don't lie and I am getting tired of people calling me a lier.
Thanks.
I'm reluctant to wade into this but I noticed that if Mactracker is to be believed, the Early and Late MacBook Pro have the same Model Identifier, which would suggest that the SL installer for the Early MBP might see the Late MBP, which came with Lion, as close enough for government work. While the SL installer wouldn't necessarily be 100% suitable for the Lion Machine and probably wouldn't allow installing over the existing Lion partition, I can imagine it working on a clean partition or external USB or Firewire drive. A 10.6.8 combo updater could then configure the SL installation for the MBP it's actually on. -
Why won't my iMac find my new MacBook on the network for Migration?
My older iMac (7,1) can't find my new MacBook Pro on the network. I've tried two different WiFi networks. I've ensured both machines are current in their SW. I can't use Ethernet because I didn't buy the Thunderbolt to Ethernet connector. The MacBook sees the iMac, but the iMac just keeps searching and after a while the MacBook displays a message that the iMac is not responding.
I believe I'm following the Migration Assistant directions properly, starting the app on the iMac and selecting migrate to a Mac, and then starting Migration Assistant on the MacBook and selecting migrate from a Mac or PC.
It used to be that I could connect the two via FireWire and start up the older Mac while holding down the "t" key and the newer machine would see the older machine as a disk drive. Without FireWire on the new machine could I use a USB connection the same way?Lessons Learned:
Thunderbolt to FireWire is only for FireWire 800 so doesn't help connect to older FireWire 400 disks. (Apple Store employee says there is a FireWire 800 to FireWire 400 converter, they just didn't have it in stock.) My iMac has a FireWire 800 port, but I didin't have a FireWire 800 cable. (I'm opposed to buying one time use things, like the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter, FireWire 800 to 400 adapter, or a FireWire 800 cable.)
Be sure to pay attention to migration direction. You can migrate either direction, but you probably don't want to migrate from a new machine to an old one.
If you have the same user id on both machine you cannot migrate into the user id you're logged into on the new machine. Might be better to first create a dummy id on the new machine, migrate all old id's over, and then delete the dummy id. Obviously I didn't do this.
If you have a wireless router with multiple ethernet ports you can connect the two machines to the router, ignore the wireless network, and connect via ethernet. I could not connect the two machines just running an ethernet cable between the two. (I think someone suggested that.) -
Brand New MacBook Crash... won't start up again
I just bought a new MacBook last week, and it has already crashed.
While I was using it a message popped up that said, "You must restart the machine immediately, hold down power button to do so." After I did this, I tried to turn it on again but the screen was blank. The "on" light was on, but other than that, nada. It isn't even booting up to the point where you can troubleshoot it. In other words, my computer is a vegetable.
Has anyone else had this problem? Or do I just have bad luck with computers. I switched to Mac because I thought it would be more reliable than my old PC, but at this point I'm considering switching back. That restart message is a kernel panic; these are often caused by a hardware issue.
If at all possible, bring the machine back and ask for a replacement. Sounds to me like you purchased a machine that managed to pass the quality tests and then broke down once it got into your hands.

Brand New MacBook crashes almost constantly
I recently purchesed a new MacBook and sadly to say, the thing has had nothing but problems. Applications will "unexpectedly quit" after only a few minutes using them (and no big applications either, just small things like Safari and Firefox), also, it tends to kernal panic at least once a day. The thing was purchased just two weeks ago, are there updates I should look for or is this a RAM thing? It is almost completely unfuntional at the moment.
I've been having the same problem lately, but someone on these boards suggested checking out Onyx, which is a maintenance and system optimization program, so I'm passing on the wisdom. Haven't had any problems since (was just a few days ago). Here's the link: http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/download.html
I would also suggest checking your RAM with a program called Rember:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/24508
Failing that, boot up with Install Disk 1 and use the Hardware Test to see if there's a hardware issue. -
I purchased my first MacBook in Miami 4 days ago on the premise that I would at last be free of all Microsoft related quirks like freezes and crashes. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Day 2 upon uploading my vacation pics into iPhoto and sitting back to watch to slide show of them - the computer froze and when i tried to replay it stuttered like a scratched record and would go no further before it closed the program itself.
Hoping for better luck it tried manipulating some video clips with iMovie only when I tried to play my 90second premier back without fancy transitions or music to have the program close itself everytime I try to play the clip.
For a new computer which has not even 10% of it available storage occupied and which was sold to me on the basis that I wanted to play with photos and movies I am so incredibly disappointed - and coming from the Dark Side (ex Microsoft user!) I have absolutely no idea what to do and living on a tiny island have nobody to go to for reliable help.
Throw me a bone here please!!What you're seeing is a kernel panic. Most likely, in your case, the cause is damaged/incompatible software since system operation appears normal after a fresh boot. You can look at panic.log located in /Library/Logs/ for clues as to why your system is crashing. For a more detailed explanation of kernel panics in general, take a look at this article.

New macbook cannot join network
I have an imac that is connected to the internet via airport extreme base station. My service provider is Surewest fiberoptic which is connected directly to the base station. No problems getting online with imac. I just bought a macbook and cannot configure it to join my network. I have the settings on the imac airport to "no security", but when I try to join network it says that my network needs a password. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have exactly the same problem. Even more, I had the Airport Extreme protected with a password and my iBook would connect to the network with no problem with the password. But then I decided to eliminate the password and to have free access to the network, but the MacBook is still prompting for a password.
Any clues?
Thanks,
Cantautor -
That basically says it: resetting the beacon interval to 50 and the RTS and fragmentation interval to 2304 worked beautifully for a week - and then, bam, we were right back where we started - namely that every time our new macbook joins the network (otherwise occupied only by a hp dv1000, running xp), the network crashes and i have to unplug the router, wait, and plug it back in to get the network back up again.
Hoping someone can help me!
thanks
rachelhi carrot,
i hope you see this! i reset the values on the router which you told me to, and everything was great for a week, but then suddenly the network started going down again, two or three times a day, usually within 20 mins or so of the macbook airport joining the network.
do you have other recommendations? anyone else?
again, many thanks! -
New Macbook Pro Connects to Network but not to Internet
I just got a new Macbook pro and I transferred everything from my old macbook pro from a timemachine backup. The internet works fine on my old macbook pro (running 10.5.8) but if I turn on the airport in my new macbook neither machine can connect to the internet. It also makes the internet stop working on my roommates pc. All machines can see the wireless network, just not the internet. Tethering from iPhone works fine.
I've given both macbooks separate ip addresses. Restarted the modem. Run network diagnostics (the server and internet dots are yellow), deleted all other saved networks and restarted, but none of that is working. The new Macbook keeps crashing our internet connection.
Any ideas?
ThanksYou transferred your network PPC connection to your Intel OS X. Go to the blog How I fixed my dropping wireless Airport connection problem in Snow Leopard and follow there steps in resetting the preferences for the Airport card.
If the non of these steps work, take it to Apple ASAP. -

Kind of a pain. You can also retime in compressor by setting the desired frame rate the the encoder panel: video and then in frame controls setting the appropriate timing.
Studio X is a wse man and he's probably right, but I also ran your crash log thru digital rebellions's crash analyzer and this it what it says
ProKit Framework
This crash seems to have been caused by the ProKit framework. A common cause for this crash is a mismatched framework version. Make sure you have the correct version of ProKit for your version of Cinema Tools.
If you upgraded your operating system, you may have still have older pro user interface elements installed instead of the ones compatible with your current OS. If this is the case, you will need to either update ProKit (if an update is available) or reinstall Final Cut Pro from scratch.
Suggested Actions
Update Final Cut Studio and ProKit.
Remove Final Cut Studio and reinstall.

New macbook, Leopard and iLife 08 but iMovie crashes at launch
Hi everyone,
I just purchased a new Macbook with Leopard, iLife 08 etc - works like a dream. No problems networking or running applications - except for iMovie.
Out of the box iMovie has never worked on my Macbook. It launches and shows the initial screen - then I get the spinning beachball of death for 30 seconds - then the application crashes.
All other iLife applications run fine.
This is a new virgin Macbook (no 3rd party applications except for MS Office) loaded - do you have any suggestions on what I can do?
Can I re-install just iMovie 8 from the DVD's that came with the Macbook or do I have to reinstall the whole system.
cheers
steveYou can sell the copy of Leopard and the copy of iLife you bought at retail. No issue there.
You CANNOT sell the "restore media" that came with your replacement MacBook Pro. That software is intended to be used only on the machine it shipped with. It won't install on any other hardware than a machine identical to the one it shipped with (down to the specific model #). -
My First MacBook Crashes The Entire Network (Router) for Everyone?
Hi,
I've spent the past 2 days on my first MacBook ever, struggling to keep the Internet active.
I've never had this problem before and it started when I brought this new MacBook home.
Basically what happens is when I start up the MB and it automatically connects to the Wireless Network, the entire Internet connection (router) drops and crashes and the only way to restore it, is to shut down the MacBook and thereafter reboot the Router.
If you start up the MacBook again, the same events follow; massive internet crash across the network and then you hear people screaming and shouting that the internet crashed.
I've done plenty research, and nothing seems to work.
I've found a bit of information on MTU and modifying the values. In the 2 days I've had this Mac, I've tried every value below 1500 on the Router and MacBook, (including 1492; 1400; 1352; 1450 etc) and can't keep the MacBook to save the Value under Ethernet?? Is this a Snow Leopard bug? When it does decide to save; it resets back to Manual - Standard 1500. It's frustrating, because I moved from Windows to Mac to get away from bugs and incompatibilities and guess what; First day I encounter massive inefficiencies due to Mac
I've had a little success; when the Mac does save the MTU in Ethernet for a session (not permanent after a restart for some weird reason); I am able to browse the internet for 10 - 20 minutes though another Access Point on MTU Values on 1420; 1428; 1436 and thats it. The internet crashes.
I've also tried to disable IPv6 and manually set DNS servers and IP's (automatic/static). No success.
Please help, this is not the greatest introduction to the Mac life, and I want is the internet connection to remain stable for everyone.
My Hardware is as follows:
MacBook Air (2010) 265GB
DLINK DSL-2650U Wireless G ADSL2+ Router
Any help is greatly appreciated. It doesn't seem to be just D-Link routers.
I'm having a similar problem with an older Belkin model, running DD-WRT firmware, and two different 2010 model MacBook Pros. Heavy upload traffic can cause the wireless access point to lock up.
A friend just told me today that he's having the problem with a Linksys model, running normal firmware, and older model MacBook Pros. Heavy upload traffic (Time Machine backups, in his case) causes his access point to lock up.
(There's a lot of discussion threads about Wireless access problems, but most seem to be of the computer stops talking to wireless network variety. This problem my friend and I are having - which sounds like yours too - definitely seems to be breaking the network for everyone.) -

Can I just consolidate and copy to the journaled hard drive over the network? Will a pc recognize a Mac formatted hard drive? I have searchd the forum and online for hours and can't seem to find anything that specifically address this. Does anyone know the best solution?
Itunes library on PC -> WD Passport for Mac (connected via airport extreme to new MacBook Pro). I plan to use this as the default location for my library because the new Pro only has 256 GB onboard.
Any help is greatly appreciated.A PC cannot read a Mac formatted drive without using special software (MacDrive).

I am not familiar with networking in the least. I feel like, being as it is 2015, this is not an unreasonable request. Basically, I do not make much use of my desktop iMac anymore, other than as a backup computer and to sync my phones. My primary computer is my MacBook Pro. I'd like to make my MacBook my primary computer for downloading music, saving and editing photos and images, and syncing my phones, but i'd like to do so without clogging the hard drive on the MacBook.
Basically, what I am hoping to do is network my iMac, and MacBook Pro through the 2TB AirPort, and sync my phone through the MacBook without losing all data (ideally, I'd like to be able to sync through either computer at will).
Additionally, something like 100GB of images are stored on the iMac, and I specifically purchased the MacBook with the upgrades to do image editing on, but again, I don't know how to transfer the data to the AirPort, and I don't want to slow down the MacBook by storing all of the data on the laptop.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much.
-BryanSure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac. You should be able to set a password for it. Save it. Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer, I suppose, back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity. As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,
This handy article from Apple explains how

don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there
and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine and go for it. You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups of your stuff.
