New MacBook doesn't seem to like my Airport Express

Hi,
I just replaced my old PowerBook G4 (Aluminum) with a MacBook and it doesn't seem to play nicely with my Airport Express when it comes to AirTunes. I live in an apartment building and with my old machine I could see 4 or 5 networks but the new machine sees about 18 different networks (newer hardware, better antennas I guess) and AirTunes keeps dropping out. I also get rather random drops of the signal where my AirPort status in the OS goes to zero and I have to reconnect. It's frustrating!
I've tried adjusting the channel multiple times and I've used iStumbler to try and figure out what channel other networks are using and although I've found an unoccupied one (2 right now, other people seem to love 1, 6, and 12), AirTunes still drops out frequently (maybe 3-5 times every five minutes, usually in clusters). Interference Robustness is enabled.
Does anyone have ideas on how to improve the situation? I hate to throw hardware at the problem, but I'm even thinking about getting an Airport Extreme because maybe 802.11n will help the cause? (But will my AirTunes with Airport Extreme problem still exist?)
Any help is appreciated!

Some times doing the support over the phone can be a little difficult. So just maybe visualizing the steps may help. Give it a try and see if it helps and its free, I have read your other post. here are the links:

below are the links for the wireless adapter

Thanks for your prompt reply. I'm not sure how to connect to the monitor as the only ports available on this model mac are Thunderbolt. The mini display to display cable supplied doesn't seem to work out of the TB port. Do I need to use a Thunderbolt cable + an adaptor?

I have just changed internet providers from BT to Virgin, and now my iTunes doesn't show any of my airport express devices.  I assume that I have to reconfigure them to the the new wireless but how do I do this frmo my PC?  Thanks

I would recommend that you start by performing a "factory default" reset on each of your AirPort Express base stations. Once completed, you can use the following Apple Support article to configure each base station for streaming.

  • Can the Time Capsule hook up to a stereo like an Airport Express?

No, the Time Capsule has no audio ports or jacks on the device.

  • Can apple TV be like an Airport Express?

Is it possible to use airplay on an apple tv connected directly to a set of speakers, rather than a TV display?
This would mean that it would be able to function almost exactly like an Airport Express using airplay, without a display, and without the repeated need of a display to set it up every time apple TV is turned on.

There are some mixed reports - if connected via HDMI to TV and TV is off some people have found AppleTV won't play, others have found it will - probably an HDMI handshaking issue. This is more a case of people having TV connection but not wanting TV on rather than it being standalone without any HDMI Connection.

  • AirPort Utility doesn't support my version of AirPort Express  802.11n

I have OS X Yoesmite installed and now my AirPort Utility doesn't support the version of AirPort Express  802.11n . Any advice?

AirPort Utility 6.3.4 in Yosemite does support both versions of the  802.11n AirPort Express.
What is the model number of your AirPort Express?  If you are not sure, look on the side or bottom of the Express. The model number starts with an "A" followed by four numbers.
Hard to see the model number.....you may need a magnifying glass and good lighting.

  • 15" MacBook Pro randomly loses connection to my AirPort Express wi-fi network.

My 15" MacBook Pro randomly loses connection to my AirPort Express wi-fi network. I have to switch off wi-fi on my Mac then switch on again to reconnect. Any reason why this random occurrence keeps happening which never happened before? Any solutions and fixes would also be welcomed.

In the airport utility, you can alter the radio modes... and change the channels from automatic to a manual one.
Hold down the Option key, and  click on your wifi icon, it will tell you what channels are currently being used on your OSX.

  • In transferring data to a new Macbook Pro it seems to have stopped making progress.

In transferring data to a a new MacBook Pro from a MacBook using migration assistant, the progress seems to have stopped (for about 3 hours) and still shows 2 hours and 16 minutes remaining. The blue progress bar looks active but hasn't moved in the last 3 hours.

There might be a problem with the directory on the old Mac.  Try verifying the old Mac's internal HD, per #6 in Using Disk Utility.
Another option would be to transfer from Time Machine or "bootable clone" backups of the old Mac on an external HD.
In either event, you'll want to start over.  See the green box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for instructions.

  • My new MacBook Pro retina seems to have died.

My new MacBook Pro has been randomly rebooting over the weekend. This morning it did it again, but it wouldn't boot up past the grey screen and logo. I waited to see if it would, but I had to get to class so I closed the lid. When I got home I went to start it again, but it was noisy and very hot. I doubt it was like that all day, the battery wouldn't put that much heat out all day, so it must have started doing it on the way home. I held the power button down until lit shut down, then tried to start it again, but it still won't load up past the logo screen. I'll take it in to the store tomorrow and hopefully get it fixed. I was wondering if this is a known problem, and if the high current draw from the battery and heat may cause future reliability issues.

    linzc58,
the temperature problem might be solvable by resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller.
You can try this to get past the grey screen: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it reach the login screen now?

  • HT204350 Why does the"Looking for source..." message go on FOREVER? The macbook doesn't seem to recognize my hard drive!

I'm migrating a new 15" Macbook Pro  with retina display - using Time Machine.
I've started Migration Assistant on the new mac and selected to transfer info from Time Machine.
After I click continue, I get a "Looking for source..." message that goes on FOREVER.
My hard drive is connected to my new macbook with a USB cable.
(I'm migrating this way because I don't have a Thunderbolt adapter.)
What am I doing wrong? Has this happened to anyone else?

I'm having the same problem.  I checked the hard drive and it shows backups done earlier today but Migration Assistant just shows the spinning gear with "Looking for source . . ."
    Anybody have suggestions?

  • My New MacBook doesn´t recognize my external modem

I just got the new MacBook. My home internet connection is through an external modem that uses a USB cable. When I opened Network Preferences, and it does not give me an option to add an external modem. I was able to install the driver in the new MacBook, but it does not recognize the external modem. I need help figuring out how to get the MacBook to recognize this modem.

I have a Mac Pro and had trouble sending faxes. Apple's help topic for modems that don't connect automatically gives a list of things to try. They should add "Arrange to have a Fax sent to your Mac and try to receive it" That worked for me.

I just bought a new MacBook Air.  I've been trying for hours to find or install the spellcheck dictionary for my language, Norwegian bokmål, and I've had no luck.  I can choose several other language dictionaries, but not this one.  My display is Norwegian, I can set Norwegian as my priority for languages, but I don't have a dictionary.
Also, I bought this computer in Norway.

  • New Macbook Pro won't work with Snow Airport

I am trying to connect my new Macbook pro with an old airport snow.
The macbook can see the airport's network, but everytime I try and connect to it there's an error.
I can connect to the airport via the ethernet, but if I try to use the assistant for the snow/graphite models it says i don't have a airport card installed. Which I do.
Is it possible to connect my new macbook with this older airport. Or is my computer to new for this old wireless router?
    Any ideas??

Thanks for the input. Yes, I've driven the 23" with another Mac. I took the laptop back to the shop today. Hopefully they can resolve the issue.

  • New Macbook - "There was an error joining the Airport network..."

    Hey,
Just bought a new macbook which comes with an Airport Extreme card. This has worked perfectly with my home router (Belkin Mimo) and my work router (unknown) as well as in various train stations and public places. However I'm currently staying at my parents house and I can't connect to their router (3Com Office Connect ADSL Wireless 11g Firewall Router). Originally I thought this was an encryption issue - my parents use a WEP password rather than more sophisticated encryption. However even after making it an open network I still get this familiar error message. I was originally able to log onto a neighbouring "Apple Network" which made me think it was just down to this particular router however I can now longer connect to this. Is Airport Extreme compatible with all networks or only the newest? Are there Mac/PC issues here? Or do you think I need to get my macbook to Apple to see if the Extreme card is faulty? I can still use this router via ethernet.

Just to add that I've up to date on all updates and tried various tricks from previous posts about this error message...

  • Macbook Pro can't find properly working Airport Express network

I have an Airport Express that's set up and working properly, and my Mac Mini and my iPhone both find the airport network, but not my MacBook Pro. The MacBook pro is even closer to the Express than the Mini is, and it finds many available airport networks (from the neighbors), but not my own network that the other units find without a problem - my own network just isn't listed among the others on the MacBook Pro, and Airport Utility on the MBP can't find the Express either. I've obviously tried restarting everything, as well as resetting the Express and setting it up again (which works just fine from the other two units), and I've tried creating a new user account on the MBP and check from there, but no go. The MBP runs the latest version of Snow Leopard and works just fine with other Airport Networks (at work, or one of the neighbors networks even), so it shouldn't be faulty hardware. At some point it's time for a Lion update for the MBP and then we'll see if it's some weird system software error that gets resolved in the process. But until that happens … what else could I try?
I'm thinking maybe this is some 802.11 b/g/n malfunction? The Express is an old g, the iPhone is g only, and the Mini is an old g as well, but the MacBook Pro is newer and supports n … but it should of course still be able to switch down to g and find the **** network (or the Express when running Airport Utility).
    Anyone?

Well, I can't delete the wireless connection since it doesn't really exist (on the MacBook Pro). Had the Express in my office, but brought it home, and reset it there and created a new network using the Mac Mini, so the MacBook Pro had never been connected to that newly created airport network. But I did delete a lot of old saved connections, some of which were from when the Express was used in my office. This was however, before I read your reply here, so I didn't also erase the passwords from the keychain, however. But still no go; the MacBook just wouldn't list the new network among the available ones, or list the Express in the Airport Utility.
But then … last night, for no apparent reason whatsoever, suddenly everything just works.
In trying to wrap my head around this, and learning from it. Is it even possible for an old network used on an Airport device to interfere with a new network created by the same device? What I mean is, does the computer identify the airport by some sort of serial number or something, regardless of the network created by the airport? So that when a computer should be looking for a new and current network on an airport device it instead looks for an old network it has previously been connected to on that same airport device? Assuming the old network should still exist on that same device, and therefore skipping to look for a new network on the same device? I mean that would suck, but if that's the case then at least I'd know to always erase all traces of any old connections for a specific device in a case like this. ;-)
    Thanks for your input!
    Cheers!
