New MacBook freezing

Hello!
I have the previous MacBook, not the "new" new MacBook. It is about 3 weeks old.
It is always BURNING hot, and often, every few hours, it will freeze. I play games on it mostly, and after a while graphics get choppy and it eventually will just seem to turn off.
I took it to an apple store, had the latest updates installed (they were already installed), and said they cannot do anything unless they send it away, possibly for over a week!
I don't understand.. why can't they exchange a new MacBook? I've never heard of any support like this.
Please understand, this is my first apple computer.. I am very sad.
Does anyone have a suggestion? Is this normal?
sad

I am actually on my third macbook for this reason. The first one was used for 2 weeks , started freezing then locked up. Tried to drop it off at the Apple store , they said they couldn't help me until i had to explain to them over and over that the computer was only 2 weeks old. They let me do a quick drop and called me 2 hours later and told me to pick up a new macbook because the old drives weren't aligning or something like that. Ok awesome they replaced my computer . Well, 3 weeks later computer freezes up again, tried to do a hard restart and a folder icon pops up with a question mark. Here we go with some applecare action, went back and fourth with whoever, did everything they wanted me to do with taking the battery out draining it. They even said a product specialist is going to call me back. Never did. Finally they told me to reinstall the OS. Went home tried this , hmmmm no destination for me to install it in. Wonderful. Ok now im over it. I drive 40 mins to the apple store just for them to tell me about an appointment that i have should have made. I told them that the manager let me do a quick drop last time, well i guess i was lying or something, they weren't going help me. OK so i ask what i could do to get helped out, well i guess it took $99 and some stupid card that says Pro Care. So now i am paying them to even talk to me. Well the drive was bad I guess, but i never got a call for them, i had to repeatedly call back and after 3 days they said i had to wait for another drive from apple. Seriously over it now, second brand new laptop that i can't use. So i picked up the new drived macbook after them having it for 5 days, no problems yet but i can't wait for it to freeze again so i can whip out that $99 piece of plastic to get some help.

  • Why my new macbook freezes?

It's exactly the 5th times that my new macbook freezes! I don't understand why! The screen remains like a screenshot, it's all blocked! And I can't do anything eccept force shoutdown by holding pressed the shutdown button!
I don't understand if it's an hardware or software problem. I copied the system.log of the last freeze, so I paste it here, hoping you'll help me

Boot (hold shift key down) and run in Safe Mode for awhile. See what happens.

  • New Macbook freezing and shutting down..

Just got macbook in late Feb. in the past few days I turn on the computer and after a few minutes the screen freezes, scrambles and the macbook shuts down. Then it begins beeping and the power light flashes and I can't turn on the macbook. I have to remove the battery to stop the beeping and so i can turn it on. When i replace the battery and turn it back on sometimes it works, sometimes it freezes up again...Anyone else have this problem or can give me an idea as to what is wrong????
I am currently living in Jamaica so if i want to see if I can fix the problem first before I buy a plane ticket to bring it to get fixed with an authorized repair person in the states.

Have you upgraded anything in your new MacBook? RAM? Hard drive? If so, try replacing the new parts with the old ones and see if that makes a difference. If not, it really sounds like your MB needs some help from Apple. You shouldn't need to buy a plane ticket, though. Simply call Apple tech support (you're still under warranty, after all) and ask for them for suggestions and/or to send you a box for you to send them the machine for repairs. I had very good luck doing that when I had problems with my old iBook.
    Good luck to you!

  • Brand New Macbook Freezing / Faulty Adapter

Hopefully someone out there can help me..
I was given my Macbook Pro as a gift from the parents back in October last year. I remember it freezing on the first or second day of having it, but anyway.. since then it has been fine, until now!
About a month ago, I had my Macbook on the bed & I actually dropped it onto the floor [it worked fine] however, the magsafe charger has been faulty since. I have to wiggle it about to get the light to stay green/orange & sometimes it flickers faintly & the icon switches from charging to just normal on screen. Can someone tell me if I can get a new charger from the Apple store? I have the standard 1yr Warranty.
The other problem, which ONLY occurred this last 2 weeks is that my Macbook will just freeze. No wheel, it will just show the cursor where I last had it & NOTHING will work. I have to hold down the power until it switches off. I send a report to Apple [whatever this means] and sometimes it'll just freeze again a few minutes after. It has even froze on the actual loading up screen [with the white apple/loading icon]. Most of the time my Macbook freezes, I don't even have ANYTHING open.. which I'm guessing is bad news! I used to play my Sims 3 game smoothly before, however, now it also freezes a couple of minutes into it - so I've given that up!
I keep sending these reports & when I restart my Mac, about 5 minutes of using it [IF I'm lucky not to have the thing freeze on me] I'll get the ''You need to restart your computer'' message - and this also, just freezes up my screen. I was sending an e-mail earlier & half way through writing it, it happened & I lost everything! There is NO overheating/unusual noises.. the only time my mac heats up is when I'm using Final Cut / Sims, but even then it doesn't heat up more than usual..
I'm getting annoyed now because I have 2 x 3500 word essays to write & it is very annoying having to autosave every 2 minutes! Help!!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Your Mac should never freeze. There could be any number of causes, and the drop could be a factor. Unfortunately, the 1 year warranty does not cover accidental damage, although you may have homeowner's or renter's that does.
Since the freezing was present before the drop, it could be hardware or software related. A good place to start might be with the Apple Hardware Test, which is located on one of the gray system discs that originally came with the computer. Run the extended version if you can.
If the AHT runs to completion, see if it gives you any error codes that would indicate a hardware problem. If you get any, call Apple and tell them. Error codes indicate a hardware problem which Apple hopefully will be able to fix under your 1 year warranty.
If you cannot even run the AHT because your Mac freezes, then that in itself indicates some sort of a hardware problem, and again, you will need to call Apple about it and see if you can arrange for repair.
It's possible that the freezing and the kernel panic message you received may relate to your RAM not being well seated, so you might want to try reseating it. Instructions will be in your owners manual.
Here is a guide for troubleshooting kernel panics:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
If none of this has helped, you might want to try reinstalling the OS.
As for the MagSafe adaptor, you want to try a different one just to be sure the damage is to the adaptor and not to the port in the computer. Here is a link for troubleshooting these:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1713
Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, it might be quickest to make an appointment at the genius bar and get them to help you with this. They have a hardware test they can run from the store feed, and they would know what to check.
    Good luck!

  • New MacBook freezing up

Just got a new MacBook 2GHz, 80GB, 1GB and in the first couple of days it has frozen up completely about 10 times.
The only way to get back is to restart by holding the power button down.
After this the fan starts up and goes really fast until, I presume, it has cooled the MacBook down again.
On one occasion the battery stopped showing proper charge until I reset the PMU and the PRAM.
I've reinstalled the OS but it locked up when it was restarting from that install process.
    Any ideas? Hardware? Software?
    Any help much appreciated.
    Thanks -
    Eliot

    Hi Eliot,
I suggest you visit apple store and return your macbook if it still not pass 14 days return policy.
Tell them you already reset PRAM and SMC and reinstall the OSX with no luck.
    Good Luck

  • Brand New Macbook Freezes On Start Up!

i had to make a new thread for this
just got my macbook last week
and now it freezes when i turn it on
it shows the first grey apple logo screen
and then goes to the second blue screen and freezes
i have tried everything in the manual to resolve this, but nothing
i know if i reinstall the OS that will probably fix it, but it's just a **** hassle
i am a new user, and this is not very promising of apple
should i reinstall or go to the apple store and demand a new one and complain like a mad man?

    Hi danno2022!
If you just purchased your machine, it's still with the return policy window. Where did you purchase it from? I'd recommend taking it back to the Apple store you bought it from (if you did), have a Genius take a look at the issue, verify it and then offer a solution. That solution may involve a replacement, but it'll be there discretion (obviously).
Did you recently install anything or run any updates? Was the machine functioning fine before the update(s) only to exhibit this issue afterwards?
As for the "complain like a mad man" approach, as someone who use to work in retail... you may wish to slightly alter your plan. While you're no doubt upset and disappointed, which I don't blame you, going in to chew someone's head off when all they're trying to do is "help you" is a pretty tough scenario. I took care of everyone that I could, when I could, but it was always easier and quicker to ensure the people that were cool and level headed got resolved. Sometimes the "mad man" just cannot be appeased, despite my best efforts. Food for thought!

  • Brand New MacBook freeze during updates.

    Hello everyone,
I bought a macBook about a month ago and everything was going perfectly well until the first update notification came out. Indeed, even after letting my MacBook on all the night, the updates were still on "initializing updates" the next morning.
I noticed it happens only for Mac OS X update (10.5.4). Indeed all others updates as itunes for exemple seem to work well. Anyone has an idea on how to fix it ?

    Thanks for your help.
I actually found the answer on this topic:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7630125#7630125
Someona had the same problem than me. The file was corrupted i just had to download it manually.
Thanks again i love my macbook and my problem is solved. Cheer!

  • I have a new Macbook Pro.  When watching Youtube videos, it works perfectly until I attempt to watch the video in full screen.  When in full screen, the video freezes immediately and the audio continues.  When minimized it works fine as before. Help?

I have a brand new Macbook model A1502.  I am taking online college classes that incorporate youtube tutorial videos.  I can watch the videos if I don't maximize the screen to full screen.  When in full screen, the video freezes immediately and the audio continues uninterrupted.  I can press escape and go back to the previous screen and the video continues to play with no problems.  Can anyone help me please?  This machine is literally just out of the box with maybe an hour of use.  Thanks in advance

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • New MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard 10.6) Freezes while playing Portal, WOW, etc,

I have the new macbook pro that came out February 2011 with Mac OS-X 10.6, and I have encountered multiple problems with the computer running sluggish and freezing up in some applications. For example while playing Portal, the computer will get extremely hot and everything will freeze while the fan slows down, then it will come back, and about 5 minutes later it does it again. Same thing happens with WOW and I'm sure with many other applications. Even will run slow while watching tv on Netflix. It's ridiculous and unacceptable. Is there a news release with a factory defect or an update available to fix this overheating problem? Thanks

Is there a news release with a factory defect
Not that I am aware of. Check Google or call Apple Care as you are still under warranty.
or an update available to fix this overheating problem?
User Tip: How to deal with MacBook Pro and MacBook heat?
Per your user manual: Do not operate your MacBook Pro on a pillow or other soft material, as the material can block the airflow vents. Never place anything over the keyboard when operating your MacBook Pro. Never push objects into the ventilation openings.
From MacBook Pro: Care, Use, and Safety Information
For prolonged use, place your MacBook Pro on a flat, stable surface. Do not place your MacBook Pro on your lap or other body surface for extended periods of time. Prolonged body contact can cause discomfort and potentially a burn.
    with Mac OS-X 10.6
Use Software Update to update your os to 10.6.7 or you can go to Apple's download website to install the combo update. Also, update everything that is listed in Software Update that pertains to your computer.
Check WOW's website for updates or contact their customer service department and forums.

  • ITunes freezes my brand new Macbook

I have a brand new Macbook Pro, 15", the harddrive is an SSD.
    All software is up-to-date
From the moment I took it out of the box, iTunes has completely locked up my Macbook, requiring a hard shutdown or a force quit (that sometimes takes upwards of 10-15 minutes) to return everything to normal.
iTunes is the only program that causes this.
I have tried revalidating the permissions. I have deleted the iTunes files and let it rebuild them. I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes. I have tried various combinations of programs running. Even with iTunes being the sole thing running, my entire macbook freezes. The sound keeps playing, the cursor keeps moving, but nothing can be clicked till about 30-60 seconds goes by and it unfreezes for a second or 2, then it freezes again for another 30-60 seconds.
It's been 2 weeks of this. Is there any sort of fix coming? I can't imagine I will be keeping this macbook if it is incapable of running software i need for my iPhone and iPod.

Well, I discovered the problem with mine.
    Last.FM
When iTunes opened, it opened the Last.FM program automatically. That is what was making it hang.
I deleted Last.FM and downloaded iScrobbler for MAC OSX instead and that seems to have done the trick. It's nice to have full functionality, finally.
Not sure if anyone else has Last.FM, but if you do... that might be the issue.

  • Is there a patch for Word? My new macbook air keeps freezing up on me when I use Word.

I have a new macbook air with Osx 10.7.2 and it freezes on me regularly. It has frozen on me 4 times within the last hour of trying to work on a word docuement with i try to insert anyting into the document the only fix is to manually reboot by holding down the on/off button. I am not a happy camper at this point and am wondering if there is an upadate or a patch to fix these freezes!?

I had the same issue last year.  it turned out to be my Bluetooth earpiece reached the end of its battery life.
When I got a replacement the problem went away.

  • Bootcamp freezing on new macbook air

I got a new macbook air with the new intel chip. I installed windows 7 and the usb ports dont work as well as the keyboard.  The mac OS works fine. The only button that works is the power button. I have 10 laptops with the exact same issue. Anyone else having the same issue? Any fixes or things that I can try?

I had the same problem when installing Win7 using bootcamp. My solution which seemed to work on two MB Air with out any problem is as follows:
         - Create the bootable OS (it's not part of the solution; you can use CD drive if you choose to)
         - Create the driver using USB
         - Leave the driver USB plugged during the entire installation of the Win7 (this seemed to be the solution to the freezing problem right after installation and driver not loading)
         - Partition and follow installation instruction
When the Win7 installation is complete, it'll automatically start installing the driver from the USB drive.

  • Random freezing on new Macbook

    Hello,
I just purchased a reconditioned Macbook from the Apple Store for my wife for University. We're coming from a PC platform, so we're both new to this.
The only extra sofware I installed is: Office 2008, VLC video player, and VMWare Fusion with Windows XP Pro for her 'odd' applications.
These are pretty vague descriptions, but I am not expecting this from a new Mac..
Crash #1: Using MSN Messenger that came with Office 2008. I went to shut down and it was still running, clicked shut down, computer froze and would not respond to keyboard commands or mouse clicks. Had to hold power to reboot. Force quit did not work.
Crash #2: Using Word 2008 for Mac. Randomly highlighted things before system locked up, force quit not working, had to reboot as above.
Crash #3: Using Firefox. We have 'tapping' set up on the trackpad, so she accidentally tapped and dragged a link (like dragging a picture off a website), then scrolled over some Flash ads and it locked up the software. The link was permanently 'dragging' even after letting go of mouse button. We could not click on anything, keyboard not functional, force quit not working, every window would freeze overtop of next window as we tried to tab thru.
#2 and #3 happened in the same day. She is not impressed and is doubting the Mac choice. We hate PC but we are not expecting this from a new Macbook. Like I said it's very vague but what could be causing this? I ran the Disk Utility and fixed any permissions, found no errors while verifing the disk, and also ran the Hardware test when booting up (held D with install disk in). I did a quick test, no errors found.
People will say "ram" or "hdd", but really it seems like a software issue. I don't know, any other utilities I can run to see if something is conflicting with something else?
Cheers guys, really appreciate your time

  • New Macbook Pro 2011 - Keep freezing......

    Hi All,
My new macbook pro keep freezing from time to time......Even though I have updated the OS to 10.6.7, the problem still exists....
    Anyone can help?
    V

If the "funny noise" was a clicking or clattering it is probably a failed or failing hard drive. No, I don't think it had anything to do with the update. I'm assuming the "funny noise" was not the sound of the CD/DVD drive waking up you hear each time your reboot. Does it still make the "funny noise?"
If it is now working, I can't tell from your post, you probably should make an appointment at an Apple Store to have it checked since it is new.
It is generally a good idea to empty the trash and repair permissions (using Disk Utility) before and after any update. You should have a copy of Onyx on your HD. The developer is very active so keep up with the updates. it is free. It's a good idea to follow the instructions.
If I could only have one heavy duty repair solution, it would be DiskWarrior which is available at most Apple Stores. The developer has been around since System 8 or System 9 days. DiskWarrior is $99.95 and considering it will repair problems that other utilities can't touch, it is a steal. I run DiskWarrior about once a month.
Finally, I would get AppleJack which only runs in Single User Mode. That means holding down the <Command> and <S> keys at startup. AppleJack makes it possible to run Disk Repair without having to boot from an external drive or using the install disks. Follow the instructions. AppleJack is free. A plus is you will get to see what is going on "under the hood" because Single User Mode is mostly just the Unix part of Mac OS. You will get to see what all computers looked like just a few decades ago.
    Good luck
