New MacBook-How to move some files from Old iBook

Hello All ...
I just got a new MacBook and I would like to move a few things over from my old iBook.
Mostly I need all my mail stuff and be able to connect to the internet and such. The rest would be files, pictures and other documents ...
What would be the best way to do this ... does migration assistant do it well or should I do it manually? How do I get to migration or setup assistant and should I do it right away or after.
Should I set up my network connections on my new MacBook first and forget about trying to transer everything from my old iBook. I heard that the less you move over the better ..
Any tips or info much appreciated .... thanks

Hi Neil ...
thanks for the reply ...
If I move over my user account ... that's pretty well everything inside it... isn't it? .... Is that good?
For example ... I have Microsoft Office 2001 on there ... and I plan on installing and using 2004.
Would that be an application I should delete before using migration ?

I have several pdf files on my ipad from another computer... I don't want to loose them when I synch with my pc. what can I do?

Copy them from the original computer to the new computer.
iOS devices are not and have never been backup devices.  They merely mirror the content of the computer to which they sync.

Just drag the file from the Download folder to the folder of your choice in Finder. If you are using Safari you can designate a new default download destination in Safari>Preferences>General tab, 'Save Downloads to...'. Other browsers should have a similar option in their preferences.

How to move PDF file from Spool to Application Server?
Cannot use RSTXPDFT4 because that converts OTF to PDF and the file is already PDF.
RSTXPDFT5 doesn't work. It picks the file up and assigns it a 'text' type and outputs a 1 line txt (1kb in size) on the server with the spool number in it!
The program which outputs the file to the spool, in the first place, uses adobe forms and outputs to a printer of type PDF.

  • How do I move data files from old iPhone? Specifically, the password files for the App mSecure from my old iPhone 3Gs to iPhone 4S?

How do I move data files for mSecure (a password saver app) from old iPhone 3GS to new iPhone 4S?

That article is about using your iPod as an external hard drive, to move files from one computer to another computer.  It is not related to your question.
You can't use iTunes to move song files from iPod to computer, except for songs you purchased from the iTunes Store (and you can also re-download purchases).  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can move song files from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your current computer, add them to that computer's iTunes library by dragging the files (or folder containing the files) to the iTunes window.  After confirming everything is there (and fixing the data issue you mentioned) you can sync the iPod.  You may want to do a Restore on the iPod, if it might have a data corruption issue, which will erase the iPod's hard drive, re-install the latest software, and set it to defautl settings.

  • How to move a file from a page to another one in a wiki?

Is it possible to move a file from a page to another one in a wiki (wiki server 4)?

Files uploaded via "+" button and "Upload File to "My wiki name"" can be moved just like normal wiki pages by clicking the "sprocket" button and selecting "Move to Wiki"
Fils attached via the "paperclip" button when editing a page, must be downloaded first, deleted from the initial page and reattached to the new page.

  • How do i transfer files from old ipad to new ipad if it has already been activated as new?

I purchased a new ipad and need to transfer files from my old ipad.  However, it has already been set up as new and all support suggestions I have found have been for choosing the restore option in the set-up stage.  How do I do it now that it has been activated?

It depends on if you even have a backup. If you had a backup, I don't suppose that you would have to ask how to restore from it.
Did you backup your old iPad? If you so, did you backup with iTunes or iCloud? This explains how to backup and how to restore from a backup, but once again, if you don't have that backup any longer, this will not work.

  • How do i transfer files from old mac with frozen screen?

My PowerBook G4 just froze. I bought a new MacBook Pro. How do I transfer files from my old mac to my new one. I have firewire cable with firewire adapter for the new Mac. And the old mac has a disk that won't eject.

Turn your PowerBook off. Connect both computers with the firewire cable and then start your PB in Target Disk Mode (press the T and the power button at the same time, and keep the T pressed until your PB's hard drive mounts on the MBP's desktop. Then, you can use Migration Assistant, or good ol' drag and drop, your call.
If your PowerBook cannot enter Target Disk Mode, then you have bigger problems...;-)

  • How to improt xml file from old itunes...

    Hi
I've just downloaded a new version of itubes on a new PC. I exported music files from the old PC's itunes into a library xml file - I've tried to import this into the new one, but nothing happens!
would appreciate any advice on how to do
    thanks
    andy

Can you clarify what you are trying to do?
If you are trying to move your music, you need to copy the My Music folder from the old machine to a medium such as an external hard drive, and then from the drive to the new machine. By copying the My Music folder, you will get the songs files as well as the iTunes library information.
The "Export" command does not achieve this; it only creates a file of information. The file is, as you correctly note, in XML format, but it does not contain the music.

  • How do I transfer files from old Mac to Mac Air using ethernet to usb connection?

How can I transfer files from my previous Mac to new Mac Air using an ethernet cable from the Old Mac, connecting to the Mac Air with an Ethernet-to-USB adaptor?

Yes, you can use the usb ethernet adapter.
If you haven't started the new Air up yet, you can use the Setup Assistant that appears the first time you turn it on.
Otherwise, you can just use the Migration Assistant utility.
    Cheers!

  • Can't transfer photo files from old iBook to Mac Pro

When I travel, I upload my photos using a card reader onto my iBook (1.2Hz, 762 RAM). At home, when I try to transfer them to my Mac Pro Quad (2.66Hz, 3Gb RAM) the transfer always starts OK (a number of files transfer) but then stalls out on a particular file. If I go back to my iBook and remove the "stalled" file, then try the transfer, it starts OK and then stalls on a new file, further "down the list".
So I basically can't transfer the files. Curiously, I have tried transfering the files from my iBook to a CF card and the same thing happens, so it seems the issue is with the iBook. Why would it be an issue only in one direction, ie, no problem uploading the files onto the iBook from my CF card reader? Could this be a memory issue? Any thoughts or suggestions?? Thanks.

I suspect a bad HD in your iBook. Pretty much anything that involved stalling and HDs means that.

  • Transferring some files from old hard drive to new mac book pro: How do I do this?  I bought a SATA Wire, and can't figure out how to get my files

Hi there, my old mac book recently died and I opted to buy a new macbook pro, instead of pouring lots of money into the old computer.  I was able to get my hard drive out, and I bought a 2.5" Sata Nootbook Drive Upgrade Kit.  I have also installed superduper!....but I can't really figure out how to get everything to work.  I just want to be able to take some of my files from my hard drive, not everything...
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

I don't know what a "2.5" Sata Nootbook Drive Upgrade Kit" is but if you have a internal drive you need to connect all you needed was a $20 IDE/SATA to USB adapter
You don't need Superduper, that's software designed to clone a entire Mac's boot drive to a external drive for bootable backup purposes using the same machine/make/model.
Since the new Mac is different than the old one you can't clone (well you could but it will break the machine) the old drive to the new one.
However you can use the adapter above and software Apple provides in the Utilities folder on the NEW MAC, called Migration Assistant to transfer your User to the new machine.
However this might not be the best course of action as it can transfer unwanted data and cause problems in the Library, old programs that won't run on 10.7, etc.
You can simply create the same named user on the machine (System Preferences > Accounts) log into it and then connect the external drive with the adapter and copy the contents of your users folders over and place into the same.
It's always good to have another Admin level user account on the machine in case the primary one has a User based issue and you need to log into the other and grab files. So if either manually or via using Migration Assistant you wind up with two user accounts on the machine, it's really not that big of a deal.
