New MacBook Late 2009 frequent non responding applications

Hello everyone. I just got a new MacBook late 2009 a few weeks ago. I love being back on Mac OS X but the one issue that I'm having is this:
About once a day my MacBook will hit a spot where it doesn't want to open any applications at all. I use Safari, iTunes and yahoo messenger every day. I never shut down my MacBook. I just close the lid and let it sleep overnight. When these spells hit all I get is the bouncing beach ball and I have to force quit the application(s) and restart to get everything fast and snappy again. I got the RAM upgraded directly from Apple when I bought to 4GB. I have 219GB free on the hard drive so I don't know what could be causing the problem. Any help is much appreciated.

Just an update:
I got to thinking about anything that I have installed that could be causing the problem. So far it turns out that the Intego AntiVirus solution I had installed was causing the problems. I know Macs don't get viruses but I've always believe in having some sort of antivirus protection if anything to catch files that I might be passing on to my Windows using friends. So I went back to Norton Internet Security as I had bought that back in November. So far no application crashing and everything is running like it should.

My MacBook (late 2009 Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) often runs VERY slow...beach ball of death frequently.  My page ins (3.29GB), page outs (5.64BG), and swap files (10GB) seem extremely high in comparison to most other discussions in here.   I don't know how to copy the pie chart so it shows on here but here's what it says right now:
    Free - 176 MB
    Wired - 592MB
    Active - 843MB
    Inactive - 432MB
    Used - 1.82 GB
    VM size - 198GB
The page ins and page outs have 0 bytes/sec in the parenthesis even though the numbers are so high.
Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated!!!

You difinately need more ram. 2gb is the bare minimum to run just the Lion OS, anything extra will slow your Mac to a crawl. Upgrade to 8gb from either Crucial http://www.crucial.com/ or OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/
And you will be a happy camper!

Sounds like a good plan.  Get the store credit and then, as suggested above, order new RAM from
    OWC http://eshop.macsales.com or Crucial http://www.crucial.com
You can purchase up to 4 GB from Crucial and up to 6 GB from OWC.

Pick yourself up by your own bootstrap too?
Reinstall after restoring to HFS only then.

How do I update Nvidia 9400M GeForce drivers on MacBook late 2009?
I've got a huge fps drop problem on my mac, and i've called apple support, they told me to update Nvidia Graphics Card or something. How do i do this?

Nope, I'll do that, but since I've seen you here before, can I ask you something regarding my HD?
I've been transferring about 1.6 GB from my USB stick, and when it is going on with the transfer, my computer just freezes, i can move the mouse but not click anywhere. then after some time i can click again, but then it freezes again. And it takes like 10 times longer to transfer.
And also, would it work to transfer a windows xp.iso to my usb stick, and then install windows using boot camp?
And also, would it work if I purchase 4GB or 2GB + 4GB (6GB) RAM to my Macbook unibody late 2009?
And also, would it work if i purchased RAM memory originally from a macbook Pro?

Down load fron the Internet OmniDiskSweeper (free) and open it.  It will show you all of your files and the respective sizes.
In addition, click on your HDD icon in the upper right hand corner of your desk top with COMMAND I (I as in the letter i).  What does it say about the space used and available.

where are all the songs and whole albums i bought for i tunes? i have a new macbook but iTunes has none of my paid for music

Your purchases won't automatically show in your new Mac's iTunes library. If you go into iTunes > Preferences and on the Store tab tick the 'show iTunes in the cloud purchases' then what you can redownload should show in the Music part of your library with a cloud icon against them - click on the cloud to download them. Or click on your name towards the top right of iTunes and then click Purchased on the popup, and you can redownload them from there.
If you've moved countries since buying the music, or if the rights-holders have removed them from the store, then you won't be able to redownload them. In that case if you still have your old computer then you could copy them over from that (e.g. via an external drive : How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support or via home sharing), or copy them from your backup of your downloads/library and add them via File > Add Too Library

  • MacBook late 2009 vs MacBook Pro Mid 2012 (Ram)

Hi, I recently upgraded the Ram in my MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) to 16gb 1600 MHz DDR3 and my wife's MacBook (late 2009) has 2gb 1067 MHz DDR3 currently in it, but I tried using my old Ram (2gb slots) from the Mid 2012 MacBook Pro, and her MacBook wouldn't boot up at all, I just got a black screen.
So I see the difference is the 1600 MHz vs the 1067 MHz, so does that mean that my old Ram won't work because of this?
    Thanks in advance,
    DJ Meezy

  • Macbook Pro mouse/keyboard non responding while system still running ...

    Hi,
I just purshased a brand new MacBook Pro 3 weeks ago and I am experiencing a very annoying troubleshotting :
while using the Mac for standard applications ( Firefox, Thunderbird, MacMessenger ), the system seems block as nothing is responding ( mouse/keyboard ) but in fact only the mouse/KB is block.
I tried plugging a USB mouse on the MAc, and it works perfectly, so the MBP is not freezed.
So I decided to reboot and everything comes back to normal until it blocks again.
I think heating may be the issue as using the MBP again few hours after the issue, all is ok.
Did anyone experience such things ? Did anyone had it and solved it ?
Thanks a lot, this is really annoying.

First, try repairing disk permissions as below.
    Repair Permissions:
    Go to: Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
    Select: your Hard Drive
    Select: the First Aid tab
    Select: Repair Permissions
BTW... I can’t keep track of how many owners that have reported anomalies after installing Firefox. Really, problems that you wouldn’t imagine that could be caused by a browser’ seem to manifest when certain conditions arise. Anyway, it’s just an observation and may not be associated with your issue.

  • Can i install a SSD in my Macbook Late 2009

I have a late 2009 macbook, MC207LL/A, and I am considering putting a SSD in place to replace the HDD that is in it now.
Is there anything i need to look out for, such as size of the SSD or specs?
    thanks

So i installed one, went with a Kingston SSDNow 200 V+, only 120GB but i got it for 69.99.
Could not beat that. I did a fresh install of snow leopard and boot time now is under 20 seconds.
What an improvement. Now I will be on the lookout for a second SSD but bigger capacity for media storage to
    replace the optical.
This will add some more years to this Macbook.
PS. There is deffinetly an improvement of the battery. About an hour or so better.

  • Macbook (Late 2009) Shuts down unexpectedly during boot

I have a late 2009 macbook that did not have any major issues until a couple of months ago, when it shut down randomly on me, and when I tried to reboot it, it would make a *click* noise and it would turn off without any signs of problem. I've tried resetting both the pram and smc, neither of which seemed to do anything. The farthest it's gotten into boot since is just barely into the log in screen, so any hopes of getting info off of it is pretty much gone.
Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

    Hi there 74235,
If I understand correctly you are unable to successfully boot your Mac because it keeps turning itself off during the boot and is accompanied by a physical clicking sound, rather than a sound coming from the speakers. I would recommend these 2 steps from the following article to see if checking the disk in one of two ways will resolve or isolate the issue:
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck
    Try Safe Mode
If you're using Mac OS X 10.2 or later, you can start up your computer in Safe Mode, which includes an automatic disk check and repair. If you're using Mac OS X 10.1.5 or earlier, skip to the next section. A Safe Boot, which starts up your computer into Safe Mode, might allow you to start up your computer successfully. To do this, follow these steps:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
After the system has fully started up, restart your computer again normally.
If your Mac successfully restarts, the issue should be resolved. If the issue continues, try using Disk Utility.
    Try Disk Utility
Use these steps to use the Disk Utility app to verify or repair a disk.
If you're using OS X Lion or later, start the computer from Recovery System or Internet Recovery. If you're using an older version of OS X and your computer came with a Mac OS X Install disc, insert the installation disc and restart the computer while holding the C key instead.
When your computer finishes starting up, choose Disk Utility from the Utilities window, or from the Installer menu if you're started from an installation disc.
    Click the First Aid tab.
Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
Select your Startup Disk (usually named "Macintosh HD").
Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Tip: With Mac OS X v10.6 and earlier, always start up your computer from an Install or Restore disc when using Disk Utility to verify or repair your startup volume. Otherwise, you might see some disk error messages.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • Macbook Later 2009 -Crucial 8GB RAM upgrade

Hello guys I took some recommendations from the support here at apple and i went out and purchased 8 gb of crucial ram 1066 for my late 2009 macbook....However once and a while i get a stutter usually when clicking close(x) on programs or starting them up for the first time. I am running Mountain Lion, is it normal to have little stutters? Will upgrading the harddrive to an SSD fix the problem. Any help would be great thanks

I don't follow....did you boot into the recovery partition by restarting while holding Command-R to use Disk Utility?
You might also try a Safe Boot, maybe you've got a corrupt system file that a Safe Bot can repair http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564

  • MIgration to new macbook (late 2008)

I read everywhere that Ethernet can be used for migration from a former Mac to a (late 2008) macbook, but it's rather unclear if people mean connecting the two machines back to back using an ethernet cable of if they mean "the 2 macs are connected to the same network (via ethernet)".
If the 2 machines are connected -on their own- back to back via their ethernet connection (just as they were connected using FW in the good old times) how do the machine recognize each other ?
if the 2 machines are connected via an external network, same question : how do the 2 macs recognize each other ?
    thanks
    JM

See MacBook (Early 2008) and MacBook Pro (Early 2008)- Migration Tips and Tricks.
You can connect the two directly via Ethernet cable or both computers can be connected to the same home network either wired or wirelessly. Wired would be better because it will be faster than wireless.
If you have a USB drive you could copy all the necessary data from your former Mac. See the following:
Folders You Can Move to Your new Mac
From the Home folder copy the contents of Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
    For FireFox:
    /Home/Library/Applications Support/FireFox
    /Home/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist

For network file sharing simply select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu. Search for "file sharing" or "sharing" without quotes. You will find articles on how to set up file sharing to transfer files from one Mac to another computer.
