New MacBook -- old files lost?

My new MacBook (mid-range model) arrived Thursday evening, and I immediately set about exploring it, of course. The MB immediately began having kernel panics -- lots of them. Yesterday, after doing as much maintenance as possible on the MB through Disk Utility and also resetting the SMC in an effort to alleviate the problem, I attached my iBook via Firewire to the MB to migrate my data.
Everything looked good; the iBook had a blue screen with a gold FW symbol popping around on it, and I was getting set to migrate my data when the MB had another kernel panic. Once I'd recovered from that, the iBook's drive was completely inaccessible -- dead as a doornail. I called Apple, of course, and they will replace my drive so I can sell the iBook, but the data is gone. No problem -- I had a backup, of course (via SuperDuper), on my external drive.
I hooked that external drive up to the MB to manually drag data onto the MB, and it happened again. Another kernel panic. Now I can see the external drive in Disk Utility, but I can't mount it, and it gives an error ("The underlying task reported failure on exit") when I try to repair it.
Is my data completely lost? Is there anything anyone can suggest to prevent my slitting my wrists and/or tearing out my hair? Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks for the link, Robert. You're right -- it's quite interesting. Yesterday I did delete all of my startup items (per Apple tech's suggestion), and that seemed to help for a time. I also repaired permissions several times and also reset the SMC.
Here is the log, though several of the panics are missing, since they occurred as the MB was still starting up.

  • New MacBook, old hard drive and unsynced iPhone.

Here's the situation. Old MacBook pro died (logic board gave up). I've removed the hard drive and bought an enclosure so that I can plug it in via USB to my new MacBook pro. I am NOT a fan of Migration Assistant. I'm discouraged by the thought of copying unnecessary files. I'd rather drag and drop what I need, and then install applications from scratch. There are so many things I no longer need, anyway. It's spring clean time, after six years. What confuses me is that my iPhone hasn't been synced since my old mac died a month ago. There are new photos and apps on there that I want. I also missed out on updating to iOS 5. I don't want to plug my phone in and get a warning about syncing to a new computer and erasing everything on my phone.
So what's the tidiest way to go about this? Do I first copy my iTunes library over before syncing my phone? What files do I need exactly? Do I copy my old iphoto library over too? Where are my old apps kept? I would love to plug in my phone and it assumes it's just updating as normal. But the most important thing is that I don't lose my new photos. That trip to Iceland is very important to me!
    Please talk me through this!

    Not even a suggestion?

  • HT3275 New macbook, old external drive for time machine

I got a new macbook pro a few weeks ago and set it up using my last backup from time machine. I want to use the same external drive for backups but there is no room. Can I delete all of the old files from the old computer or do I need to keep them?

    1. Will Time Machine backup all of the hard drives in the Macpro?
As long as they're formatted HFS+, yes.  Be sure there's enough room, though -- Time Machine needs considerably more room than the data it's backing-up.  See #1 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

  • New Macbook, old external hard drive

    Hi all,
I just bought my first Macbook, but I have all of my old files (including my iTunes folder) on my external hard drive. It's formatted in Fat32, so I think it should work on my mac.
My problem is that when I tried changing my music folder in the iTunes advanced preferences, nothing happened in iTunes. Also, I'd prefer to keep my iTunes folder on my external hard drive (not on my macbook's hard drive) to save space. How do I use iTunes from my external hard drive?
Thanks for any help or tips!

When I use an ext HD I keep all the files nested in the iTunes Folder on the ext HD.
Launch iTunes with the 'option' key down and point iTunes to the Library file on the ext HD. Once the the Library on the ext HD is open then try the iTunes prefs>Advanced tab.
Yes it will work with FAT32.

  • Time Machine and New Macbook, old iBook problem.

Hi there. I was using a G4 iBook until about 1 month ago. I had been backing it up with time machine. I then bought a new computer. Upon start up, I used time machine to move my applications and files over to the new Macbook. Everything has been dandy with the new Macbook.
Today I tried to back up the Macbook using time machine but it appeared to freeze about halfway through. I investigated the boards for advice. Since my iBook was a Power PC and the new Macbook is an Intel computer, I understand that I needed to reformat the external hard drive. Okay, I did that. I then tried to run a backup but it again froze, after only 60 MBs of 37 GBs. When I try opening the external hard drive I notice that it still refers to my computer as my iBook rather than the Macbook. Does this explain the problem and if so, how can I rename my computer to reflect the change? I don't get it.

To the extent that Time Machine uses a computer's "name" in naming its backup files, that could be the explanation.
Have you renamed your MacBook to see if that helps?

  • New Time Capsule, new MacBook, old Airport Express and Airtunes

I intend to buy a new MacBook and a Time Capsule, and I still have an old Airport Express, without 802.11n. I intend to use this Airport Express just for Airtunes, maybe to connect to a printer as well.
Now I was wondering, even though the Time Capsule is capable of using the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands simultaneously, the MacBook is only capable of using one band, right? So if I use Airtunes to stream music to my Airport Express, my MacBook would be forced to use the 2.4GHz band, thus slower Time Machine backups etcetera. Is this assumption correct?
Or will my MacBook send the Airtunes signal over the 5GHz band to the Time Capsule, which will send the signal over the 2.4GHz band to the Airport Express, thus not slowing down any Time Machine backups?

    I don't think so.

Yes I think this is correct. At least it seems to me that this is the purpose of having simultaneous dual-band. The time Capsule can send or receive on both bands at the same time, or receive on one band and then send on the other.

  • New Macbook, old HDD, TM not working :-(

I have got me a new Macbook, I pulled the HDD out of my old MB and installed it in the new one, as you'd expect that all went fine. Only problem is Time Machine has stopped working. When I launch it I can only see "today", however if I view the harddrive used to store time machine all the backups are physically there.
I'm guessing this is down to the fact that it's a different Macbook, but how can I get TM to work with the new MB?

This same issue happens to me frequently. I've lived with it for the most part just because I didn't want to spend my time running down Apple's glitch. I can not tell if it is a hardware, firmware, or software issue. I have a case number which is 163792369 that I've had since June. I've never taken it in because it is not consistent. I'm leaning towards an OS glitch. I have searched Apple's archives and found one reference to it happening on an earlier version of OS-X, but I was afraid to install the patch because of version differences. Please let me know if you get a solution from the customer support. It is somewhat frustrating as this is my first experience with a Mac and I understand it's a complex piece of machinery from a hardware and software perspective, but fresh out of the box the freak'in keys should work.
    Thanks,
    Shawn A. Peterson
It just works??? Most of the time.

  • New macbook transfer files

We just bought a new macbook and a airport time capsule.  Can anyone help me understand how to take the photos/music/word docs off of our old external hd time machine back up and put them on the new machine?
    Thanks.

  • New macbook, Old phone. adding music

i bought a new mac book air and i downloaded iTunes. when i plug my iPhone 5s into it and try to add music it says that i must delete all my old music to add new music from my new laptop. how do i add new music from my new mac book without deleting all the music already on it that i added from my old laptop?

Why wouldn't you simply restore the backup of your old computer to your new MacBook Air?  Then you could simply add the new music to your MacBook Air, sync it using iTunes, and all would be good.

  • New Macbook, old iPod

I'd like to transfer the tunes on my iPod to my new Macbook's iTunes. The tunes I'd purchased from the iTunes store were easy enough, but most of my music library consists of selections from my CDs, and I'd really like to avoid downloading them individually to my computer again.

The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. This is just a small selection of what's available, you can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide

  • Will sync-ing iPad to new Macbook lose files other than music files?

I bought my first Macbook (first Mac laptop, and first Mac in over a decade) a few months ago and have been a little reluctant to sync my iPad to it. Will I lose anything other than my iTunes files? e.g. Will my Pages files or iBooks or Kindle files disappear? What will happen to my apps? My hard drive crashed late last year and I have lost some things that I won't be getting back, so I just want to make sure that when I do sync I'm doing it with full knowledge of what's going to happen. (i.e. I can try emailing all of my Pages docs to myself first.)
Thanks for any help you can give!

  • New macbook, old ipod touch.... cannot access music!!

I recently bought the macbook pro for college. I have an iPod touch, which is basically attached to me at all times. I am trying to open up my library on this computer but it continually says that this ipod is synced with another computer and I cannot access my music, add, or delete anything. How do I sync this ipod with my new computer, and/or UNsync the other computer (family computer which I will not have access to come august)
    HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

The ipod touch will sync with ONE computer at a time. If you sync to another, it will erase the content from the ipod first, then replace with content from the new computer. This is the way it is designed.
You should move all of your info/music/pics/etc from the old computer to the new one first, then sync.

  • Move Firefox config to a new harddrive (old files intact)

The boot sector of my old HD is fried. I installed it as a slave to a newer HD. FF is installed on the master HD, but is not configured as I want; no bookmarks, etc. All the files on the old HD are totally readable, so I just need to move the FF configuration over.
How do I do that? Where and what exactly are the files I need to move?
I have the same problem with Thunderbird so if you can, please advise for TB as well; Mail, config, etc.

Personally I would prefer to keep it in the iTunes Music folder, it makes it much easier if you ever need to move it (other people like to use their own filing system but since I only use iTunes it's not an issue for me, I let it do the work). When you are planning to move iTunes it's an idea to consolidate your library first. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them. That ensures you have nothing in the library that's not in the iTunes Music folder and you are not worrying about where everything went on the old computer: Copying all your iTunes files to one location - Windows

  • Brand New Macbook, Old WDS/Airport Home network -- Slow internal transfers

Airport 802.11n network w/ WDS remote
Just powered this MacBook on, but I am getting ridiculously slow speeds on internal file transfers (350Mb in 7hours?). I've done all my updates, and there is no reason why the existing network shouldnt be able to do better.
Signal strength is strong, Link speed is showing 130Mbit/s.
I have an AP express in the same room that I use to stream to an Xbox.

If your Extreme is the new dual band model, the obvious solution is to run an exlusive 802.11n network for your Macbook, and an 802.11g network for your Express, Powerbook, and xbox. The dual band Extreme can bridge these networks.
WDS is a compromise that has its place in extending the useful range of older 802.11b/g networks. It's arguably becoming less useful as web page designers grow to rely upon bandwidth hungry flash animation and code, and it will absolutely kill your file transfer throughput.
are there any performance tweaks you can make that would allow the network to run at 'n' speeds when the older devices are off the network?
I'm unaware of anything that would accomplish this.
