New MacBook on old Time Machine backup-creates a new one!

I've read lots of posts on this, but I can't seem to find the anwer to my problem.
I have a Time Machine backup of the last year. However, I just bought a new MacBook Air and I need for Time Machine to inherit this new Mac to my old backup.
I used Migration Assistant to transfer evrything from my old MacBook to the new one.
But when I turned Time Machine on, it starts creating a new backup.
I need it to keep using the backup of my old MacBook.
From what I've have read in other web pages where they show how to's on Time Machine, is that once I bring everything from my old Mac (restore from the Time Machine backup) the only thing I need to do is to plug in Time Machine to my new MacBook and it would start backing up where it left of, but it doesn't happen that way. It creates a new backup file. It has the same computer name but it appends a number "1" to the name to differentiate it from the original.

When you reboot, Setup Assistant will start automatically. Follow the prompt to import data from a Time Machine snapshot. The backup history will then be inherited. The first backup will still be a full one; that can't be avoided.

I have had problems with my old Account and decided to create a new Account. I can "see" the old Time Machine backup lists from the new Account, but can't open or restore them to the new Account. Not brand new, a few months old, already installed progams I wanted to carry over. Now i was trying to do the Migration assist for the files I want and now I'm getting this message:

I wanted to access my Time Machine Backup from a new MBP. Time machine recognized my backup drive but could not find my Backup file. What's wrong here? I use another Login name on my new MBP - could that be the reason?

Just started my new Macbook Pro, from Time Machine backup and the password is not working

Just got home with my new mackbook pro, and going through the startup process I booted from a time machine back up of my 2007 macbook. When I got to the login part of the process, after the new macbook was registered and ready to go, and now my password is not recognized.

I just got done posting back and forth with someone with a similar problem (not exact).
Turn the power off by holding down the power button, that is if just one push does not turn it off.
Then turn it back on and hold down the Option key. That will give you a startup screen where you can select which partition on the drive to boot into. Select the Recovery partition. From there you can use Disk Utility to wipe the Macintosh partition of the drive and then do a reinstall of the OS from the Apple website.
You need a internet connection to do this and depending on your internet speed it can take a few hours to complete. If you have a fairly fast internet connection it may still take 1-2 hours to download the 3.5+GB file to do the reinstall.
Before you go through all this try turning the system off and back on a few time to see if Lion can recover on it's own. I doubt it but it's worth a shot.

Can I still use my "old" Mac after restoring Time Machine backup to a new Mac?

Hi guys.
Will I still be able to use my old Macbook Pro 2008 (Leopard) after restoring his latest Time Machine backup on a new Macbook Pro 2012 (Lion)?
Using Setup Assistant and transfering data using Time Machine creats the same Account on the new machine that was on the old one. I just don't know how the old machine will react towards his clone. I don't want to make a mess...

It should work if the drive is connected directly to your Mac. That is not the same as saying that it will work.
Since Mountain Lion was just released, it might make sense to hold on a few weeks and watch the forums for new and unforeseen issues before you dive in.

I keep getting this error on my new Macbook Pro w/ Retina.

Connected to a wifi network and QNAP storage system. There are 5 computers on this network, and each backs up just fine. The issue is isolated to this one machine.
This error shows up every week or so.

A third-party NAS is unsuitable for use with Time Machine, especially if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want. I know Time Machine accepts the NAS as a backup destination. I know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and I also know that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
Apple has published a specification for network devices that work with Time Machine. None of the third-party NAS vendors, as far as I know, meets that specification. They all use the incomplete, obsolete Netatalk implementation of Apple Filing Protocol.
If you want network backup, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
Otherwise, don't use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to back up, though none of them is anywhere near as efficient or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS with Time Machine, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple, or you, or anyone but itself.)

Import photos from old powerbook to new macbook pro with time machine

Today I received a new macbook pro from Apple because my powerbook g4 was beyond repair. I would like to import my iPhoto library from my time machine backup to the new computer. I have opened up iPhoto and then time machine but it is only showing me today, not what's been backed up on the harddrive. Can anyone tell me what to do to focus it to what was backed up, not just today?

In System Preferences, Sharing, is the Computer Name of the new MacBook the same as the old PB? If not, right-click the Time Machine icon in the dock and choose +Browse Other Time Machine disks+. It should be obvious where to go from there.

Time Machine would create a NEW backup

Hello,
sorry for my bad english, I'm not a native speaker.
I'm useing Mac OSX 10.7.3
Since a few days, I've some trouble with Time Machine. When TM would create a new backup in the normal hourly loop it creates the following message:
Time machine has completed the review of its backups. To improve the reliability time machine must create a new backup. (i hope it's the correct translation in englich)
Now I've to options:
1. I can create a new backup later
2. create a new backup
Does anyone knows what is wrong? I don't want to create a new backup, I want to use the old one.
I still have enough space on my backup volume. I'm using the Airport Extreme and a WD hard drive.

Unfortunately, the issue is that the wireless connection isn't fast enough. The error is saying that basically its going to take too long to do the work.
Not sure how apple makes the time capsule faster,but apparently it works.
Apple suggested configuration is either by a direct USB or FireWire connection, or use a time capsule.
Linc is correct in his last post. You can actually plug in your USB drive at random intervals and time machine will see it and do its thing. This will probably work better in the long run, even though you haven't had any issues up until now.

New mac does not inherit old time machine backups

I used Setup Assistant to move files from my Time Machine backup to a new Mac. However, when I started Time Machine on the new Mac, it started creating an entirely new backup rather than inheriting the old one. Any help?

Because Time Machine said the Oldest Backup was "none" and the Newest Backup was "none". Also, the initial backup size was far too big for any changes to files I might have made. I also checked the data folder on the Time Capsule, and a new backup file was being created.

Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant. If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

You really can't.
That's not one of Apple's clearest messages; it means your backups are damaged beyond OSX's ability to repair them. See #C13 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for details.

Old time machine backup partition erased, but new partition failed

I had a defective time machine backup and had to start over. My disk has 4TB. The original time machine backup contained two backups from different laptops and was in the largest partition of 2TB. I then had two addition 1TB partitions. I remade new time machine backups to each of the 1TB partitions for each of the mac book pros. When I went to delete and change the original 2TB partition I found I could minus it out to create free space, but all attempts to try to repartition it as 2TB or as 2 1 TB pieces and even a piece as small as 200MB failed and asked me to resize closer to the original partition.
I have seen many similar issues, but not quite like this. I have already shut down the external drive and unplugged it and the restarted my machine, but to no effect. I now have 2 1 TB partitions and a 2 TB empty space.
Any suggestions?
I'm a little afraid to copy the Time Machine backups to a new drive as I heard that is NOT a good idea.
Is this a problem created when a partition is used for a Time Machine backup?

How are you looking for the backup?
Time Machine will only show the active backup.
You can hold down the Option key while selecting the Time Machine menu and you will have the option to Browse other Time Machine backups.
