New macbook pro 15" won't detect external display using vga adapter

Hi there
I've tried multiple monitors and connectors but i can't get my mac to detect an external display. it responds as if nothing is connected. I'm fully up to date software-wise.
any ideas?
thanks for any help!!

Hi, I'm having the same problem, tried to connect both a Viewsonic and a Hanspree. Was happy to find your response here, but I just got the Moshi adapter with the macbook pro so it seems silly it would have gone bad. :/
I suppose I'll take it into the Apple Store and see what they say. Thanks!

Firstly - I've searched this problem several times now and I've found this problem in four of five discussion topics on this board, each with 4 or 5 pages of people adding "I'm having the same problem" but in all of that there wasn't a single response from Apple, instead they just 'archived' the discussions and hoped that people would just go away.
That's pretty ******* disgusting customer service, considering the amount of money we're paying for your products. You owe us at least for them to ******* work properly - not just ignore major problems, which are clearly present for quite alot of your customers.
For months I've had no problems just plugging my MBPro into an external monitor by DVI using the Apple certified DVI-thunderbolt connector.
For some reason, a few weeks ago, the MBPro stopped detecting the monitor.
I have to spend about 20 minutes ******* around, unplugging and replugging in the leads, restarting with and without the leads plugged in, resetting the p-ram, reinstalling OSX 10.7 and it always seems to be just a random time when it decides to start working.
I'm not just some kid ******* around with an expensive computer for the fun of it. I make a living using this system and I need the big screen for the work I do. I don't have the time to spare every sodding day to be ******* around with **** that doesn't work properly.
At first I thought the problem was restricted to just my work display as it appeared to work fine on all other displays. However, last week I was giving a presentation at work to a company who were potentially about to spend mega bucks giving us some work. I turn on the screen and plug in my computer to show the presentation. Nothing happened. luckily I was able to quickly transfer the presentation to another working computer (a PC) and continue on.
But seriously, please justify spending over £1000 on a computer that can't perform the simplest of tasks without spazzing out?
And secondly - stop ignoring this problem and get fixing it. Now!

  • MacBook Pro 2011 Won't Detect External Dell Display

I have a brand new 2011 MacBook Pro, 17" that I use with a 24" Dell E248WFP monitor. I purchased a Moshi HDMI to DVI adapter, and at first everything worked fine--I would use the MBP with the lid closed, everything would show up on the display, and everyone was happy. Then I disconnected my MBP one day and took it somewhere, and when I came back I couldn't get the external display to connect. But then I tried some things and it did. The next time I disconnected my MBP from the display I had problem again, but after 10 minutes of fiddling around it finally worked again.
Over time, I found that different things would work, but not consistently. That is, sometimes I could merely click on "detect displays" and that would fix the problem. Other times I would put the computer to sleep, then shut the lid and move the external mouse or press a key on the external keyboard, and that would work. Sometimes if I just left it alone for a half hour I would come back and the external monitor would suddenly work for no apparent reason. But it was rarely consistent. What worked one time would not work the next.
This week, I went somewhere with my MBP, and when I came home I couldn't get it to connect. I have now been trying to fix this for two days and although I have tried hundreds of things I can't get the monitor to connect. Yes, the monitor is on. Yes, the monitor works otherwise and appears to be in fine functioning order.
I have tried restarting, resetting PRAM, shutting down, starting up with the monitor unplugged and then plugging it in, starting up with the monitor plugged in, shutting the lid while restarting, not shutting the lid while restarting, putting the MBP to sleep and then shutting the lid and then pressing a key on the external keyboard (it wakes up my MBP but nothing comes up on the external monitor), I've verified that the internal and discreet graphic modes are both working, and many other things. I have no idea what else to try, but I do know it doesn't seem to be working.
What I have not tried is connecting the MBP to a different monitor, but given that I already had problems before wherein the monitor would work, not work, work, not work, etc., I'm inclined to believe it's a software issue with the MBP, as opposed to any hardware problem with the monitor, although I suppose it could be something with the MBP.
I've examined many other threads from people seeming to have this problem, except none of them seem to have run into such a dead end as I have. And while I would love to have an excuse to buy a 27" Mac display for $1,000, I'd also love to have an excuse not to. If anyone has more things I can try to fix this, please let me know.

  • Can I use my macbook pro mid 2012 as an external display using thunderbolt port

    Hi,
I want to use my macbook pro (mid 2012) screen as an external display for a raspberry pi using a HDMI to Thunderbolt cable, via the thunderbolt port on the macbook pro. Would this be possible? Can the macbook pro's thunder bolt port act as an input and is any additional software required?
I look forward to hearing from you.
    Thanks in advance!

You are referring to Target Display mode. Target Display mode can only be used in 27-inch iMacs and iMacs with Thunderbolt, not MacBooks Pro > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302
Unfortunately, you can't use the MacBook Pro as a display. It doesn't support the monitor mode

  • Have CS 5 Installed on my iMac and works ok. But installed on my new MacBook Pro it won't open NEF files from my Nikon D810. Displays NEF icons, but when I try and open them the response is: Make sure latest RAW updates are installed. If problem persists

Have CS 5 Installed on my iMac and works ok. But installed on my new MacBook Pro it won't open NEF files from my Nikon D810. Displays NEF icons, but when I try and open them the response is: Make sure latest RAW updates are installed. If problem persists follow link: http://www.adobe.com/go/kb407111. Have installed Bridge 5.0.2.4; Raw Ref Version 7.0.0.308; DNG converter_8_7_1.dmg; Bridge 5.0.2 Update 2. Also same problem with Lightroom which I don't normally use. Lightroom_3_LS11_mac_3_6.dmg installed.

In the link you posted it states that the Nikon 810 requires ACR 8.6 or newer.
Version of ACR are specific to versions of Photoshop. You cannot use 8.6 nor even 7.0.in CS5.
I believe that ACR 6.7 is the latest that will work with CS5, so make sure you have this installed and get rid of ACR 7.
Having 2 versions of ACR will cause problems.
You have already downloaded DNG Converter 8.7.1.
Have you double clicked the DMG file to allow you to install DNG Converter on your computer?
Be aware that DNG converter is a stand-along application and not a plug-in.
You need to open DNG converter at select the FOLDER that contain your .NEF files.
Don't open the folder and try to select individual files, it doesn't work that way.
After converting your D810 files to DNGs you can then open the DNGs in CS5
The problem is your camera didn't exist when CS5 & its version of ACR was developed.
i don't use Lightroom, but the list mentions Lightroom 5.6 as needed to open D819 so your 3.6 version of LR won't cut it.

  • My new Macbook Pro 13" won't register properly on our school's projectors when I try to run PPT!, My new Macbook Pro 13" won't register properly on our school's projectors when I try to run PPT!

My new Macbook Pro 13" won't register properly on our school's projectors when I try to run PPT (Epson EB510)!  Instead, colored bars go across the screen against a black background.  No matter how much I try to adjust the displays, PPT won't show on it.  However, my friend's Macbook Air works fine. She's 10.7.2, I'm 10.7.4, so we're both more or less OS X Lion.  What could be wrong?  Can I do anything to fix it?

Make sure that your display is not mirrored. Mirroring forces you into "lowest common denominator" screen resolutions that can safely be displayed on BOTH screens, which may not be good enough for the projector.
When you turn off Mirroring, you get Extended Desktop, where the two screens are joined along an edge to form a larger Extended Desktop. To use this, drag a window onto the "other" screen.

  • MacBook suddenly won't detect my display, Using Mini Display Port to VGA?

MacBook suddenly won't detect my display, Using Mini Display Port to VGA?

dohdoh1985, I have the exact same problem also! I recently bought a 42" RCA LCD TV. I connected my MacBook Pro to my TV using a Dynex Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter that I got from BestBuy. It worked great until I upgraded to Mac OS 10.6.4 and then it suddenly stopped working. Same TV, same settings, same cables, same adapter. Nothing changed since the last time it worked except that my OS was upgraded to 10.6.4, so i am assuming that is the culprit. The symptoms are EXACTLY the same as what dohdoh1985 described; when I plug in the TV, the laptop display flashes (3 times) as though it is detecting an external display and the picture on the TV briefly goes from blue to black for about 1 second then back to blue. The TV does not appear in the display menu / control panel and there is no sign that the MacBook detected it. I went through the usual troubleshooting steps (reset PRAM, checked connections, tv settings, etc) but nothing worked. Other HDMI sources (i.e. Blu-ray player) work fine on the TV using the same HDMI cable on the same port so there is nothing wrong with the cable, the TV or the TV's input settings.
Meanwhile, I can still connect my MacBook to my external ViewSonic monitor at work without any problems. It's just the TV that's not working.
I cancelled my cable subscription a while ago since I only watch shows online nowadays and this was my only way of watching TV shows, so I'm quite upset.
    Apple, please help!

  • My mid-2010 10.8.2 iMac won't detect external displays.

My mid-2010 10.8.2 iMac won't detect external displays. I've tried using a third-party minidisplay port to DVI adapter, as well as an Apple-brand minidisplay port to VGA adapter. The monitor I'm using is a Dell SP2008WFPt. It is a functional monitor. I've tried resetting the PRAM, repairing my disk permissions, rebooting, and doing all sorts of wacky stuff with the order I plug things in. Is there a solution? It seems like lots of folks are having the same problem.
Thanks! This is really starting to make me angry.

    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • Connecting HP 2311x display to new macbook pro Retina - no output on external screen

I have a brand new MacBook Pro 15 in. with Retina display.  I also have a HP 2311x monitor.  When I plug in the HDMI cable, the external monitor says "check video cable" and the preferences "arrangement" thinks there is a display - even recognizes the type - but the external display just wont display anything but the "check video cable" box.  I spent 2 hours on with apple yesterday, they had me do all sorts of resets and stuff - but no luck.  The HDMi cable works when connecting a pc to the screen.  When connected to by macbook, the screen on the macbook likes to flash black and its annoying.  I have gotten really used to working with two screens....  and apple's suggestion was to buy a thunderbolt cable and try that.  As it is, with this new macbook I have to buy a bunch of cables, I really don't want to buy another one when I am not sure that will work.  Darn things are expensive when you are buying 4 connectors at once (ethernet connector since the speed via wireless is noticably slower; magsafe to magsafe2 converter; thunderbolt for my printer; and a connector for the monitor at home which doesn't have an hdmi port).
Any other suggestions before adding another to that list? Since Apple seems to be out of ideas... any info would be appreciated.

I have an HP 2311x as well. I'm using an HDMI cable and am not having any issues getting the screen to display. I know you said the cable works with a PC but have you tried a different HDMI cable just in case. It might be worth a try. Other than that, I'm not much help.
The issue I had when plugging this monitor into my MBP retina was that the image was very blurry on the HP 2311x. I almost gave up on using it and was going to just buy a Thunderbolt display but after much research I found a custom firmware update that fixed the underscan/blurriness issue. So be prepared for that if you get the screen to display.
If I can find that resource, I will post it here.
    Good luck!

  • Brand new macbook pro 15" when connected to external LCD display in high resolution ,flickers often

    Hi,
I have brand new macbook pro 15" with retina display.
I have connected external LCD display (Samsung B2230) using Apple VGA adaptor & thunderbolt port. But LCD display flickers quite oftenly. I read community blogs where many macbook pro users like me are facing similiar issue.
There is no problem with LCD display as it works fine with Lenova laptops.
Can anybody please provide me the solution to this problem.?

  • My new Macbook Pro suddenly won't turn on!

I just got my new Macbook Pro 15" 2.66GHz and now it won't turn on. I was using it until it almost didn't have any battery left. Then I was away from it for a while and when I came back I couldn't make it work again. When the power cable is plugged in the little white light on the cover blinks and I can here a strange sound turning on and off again and again - sounding like the harddisk turning on and failing, turning on and failing... Now the power cable has been in the computer for a while but it's still like this and the lamp on the adapter is green - not orange, which it should be when it's charging. This is really bad since I have a lot of work on it, do you know anything? Please and thank you.

If the little light on the front of the MBP is still on, hold down the power button until it turns off and all signs of activity stop. Then reset the SMC:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Reconnect the AC adapter. Does it begin charging now (orange light on the plug)? If so, let it charge for half an hour and then try starting it up again. If that works, it's ready to use normally.

  • HT201364 BRAND NEW MACBOOK PRO 2013 - WON'T DOWNLOAD MAVERICK'S FROM STORE

I have just Purchased a brand new Macbook Pro 2013 from Apple store and it won't let you download Maverick's even thought it's already installed.  Does anybody know why?  I originally purchased a Macbook Air 2013, which I returned for the pro model.  This came with Mountain Lion, which the app store let me download Maverick's from the app store.  I could also download as a backup in case something went wrong.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You have got a Late 2013 MacBook Pro.
That MacBook Pro needs a special OS X Mavericks version that is newer than the Mavericks version available in the Mac App Store. This is the reason why the Mac App Store does not let you download Mavericks even if you are using OS X Mavericks.
To reinstall OS X Mavericks, use OS X Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 You will not be able to download OS X Mavericks from the Mac App Store until Apple launches OS X 10.9.1
