New macbook pro 160 GB 2.26 ghz memory issue???

Just got a new macbook pro, i'm a converted P.C. user , so far I love the thing, but i noticed when I went into Mac HD at the bottom it said 86.4 gb remaining or something to that nature? The only additional things I have put on the hard drive is my music (roughly 12 gigs), so where did the other 60+ gigs of memory go? Are all the applications like ichat, ical, iphoto, garageband, taking up that much space? If anyone can give me any idea's on how to free up some of that space or get it back, it'd be much appreciated!
I do feel that it will take ions to fill up the remaining 85 gigs, but on the other hand if I had bought the 120 gig hard drive i'd be in a different boat and it seems strange for apps to be taking up that much memory!

What donv is alluding to is the fact that the actual, formatted capacity of a nominal 160GB drive will always be around 147GB.
Your OS occupies approximately 9GB, and can be slimmed down by a couple. Your apps and the support files and sample files that accompany them probably occupy 10-20GB more, depending on what you've installed besides the factory-preinstalled apps.
Beyond this, DiskInventoryX will fill you in on where the rest of your space is going.

What are you trying to do?  If you have a brand new machine, you don't need to download and install Mavericks.  You already have it.

  • Just purchased the new Macbook Pro 13-inch: 2.3 GHz, Is it good for gaming?

Right, so I just purchased the new Mac Book Pro 13-inch: 2.3 GHz, Is it any good for gaming, On a scale of 1-10 (10 being the best) how good?
Can I run games like The Sims 3 flawlessly? Will I have problems with lagging and speed .etc?

Sims 3 will run on medium setting with approximately 33 fps (which is ok).
Most other games will run on low settings, some on medium. Its definitely not a gaming laptop but it can handle some games.

  • New Macbook Pro slower than old one.

I recently got a new Macbook Pro, unibody, with 2.8 Ghz core 2 duo and 4 GB Ram. I am upgrading from a Macbook Pro with the previous body design, that is 2.5 Ghz core 2 duo and came with 2GB RAM but I upgraded to 4GB myself.
I got the new MBP, migrated some applications and my settings. Now when I start Firefox I sometimes get the spinning beach ball for a few moments before my homepage loads. Also for example, if I have 2 tabs open, with one playing a youtube video in the background and I'm browsing in the other, the video will stutter and I'll get the beach ball for a few moments when I try to go to another page. This happens no matter what browser I try (Firefox, Safari, Camino). And it never happens on my older MBP, it's a little annoying that a system that is 2 years older seems to perform better.
    Any ideas or tips?

You might want to check that you have selected a startup disk as "Macintosh HD" so the OS x knows where to boot from. If there is no selection under startup items in System Preferences then boot up is delayed by a few seconds as OS X would look for a functional startup disk.
Check and see if this works for you in bringing down boot times.
PS> Also check what login items you have in the lisr under Account.

  • I want NumPad functionality on my new MacBook Pro!

    Hi,
I recently bought a new MacBook Pro 15,4" 2,5 GHz, 2GB RAM with Leopard 10.5.2. When it arrived, I noticed that they took away the numpad functionality in this new model. The problem is that I use Finale 2008 and I need the numpad badly for entering the durations and accidentals. The numbers above the letters don't work for this, I must have a numpad. Without it I take 2-4x the time to introduce the notes, because I have to use the mouse to click on the toolbar to do it.
I already tried to use Ukelele and DoubleCommand to remap keys with no success.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thank you.
    Jónatas

Well, that is not a really good option: we're talking about a laptop, not a desktop. But if I don't get any other solution, I'll probably have to buy an external USB numpad. But I'd expect that a new model would have MORE features, not less — and this lack of feature was nowhere to be seen.
    Does anyone have a workaround?

  • Recently bought a new Macbook pro...want to swap hard drives with my old macbook pro

I recently bought a new Macbook Pro:
    13 in, 2.5 GHz Intel core i5
    8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    500 GB HD
Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB
    Mid 2012 model
I'd like to install the 750 GB HD (with Bootcamp Windows 7 install) from my old macbook pro into my new macbook pro.
Here are the old computer's stats:
    13 in, 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
    4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
750 GB (This is a WD I bought and upgraded myself into the old computer)
Intel HD Graphics 300 384 MB
    Early 2011 model.
My question is this: the guy at the tech shop said he didn't think swapping out the hard drives would work because the 750 GB HD in the old machine would have the drivers, etc. installed for that architecture. I think he might be wrong.
My question is this: if i were to swap out the 750 GB HD from the old machine, would I experience any issue in running both Mac OS X 10.8.3 and Windows 7? Or is homeboy right -- is this architecture too different?

That is normally the case, however Apple has been known to include the drivers for all previous models that can run that version of OS X when a software update occurs.
One way to find out is to remove the 750GB out of the old machine and use a SATA to USB adapter cable to the new Mac, then reboot holding the option key down for Startup Manager, which the external drive should appear as a bootable option, click the arrow and see what happens.
Even if it does boot, there is a issue of copy protected apps (and free iLife) not being compatible with that new machine. So you might want to test that for awhile and update etc., before doing a actual hard drive swticheroo.
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's
If it doesn't work, you can use Migration Assistant in the Utlities folder and it will move all your apps and files from OS X. (using the SATA to USB adapter)
A paid program called WinClone 3 that runs in OS X can clone your Windows partition to the new BootCamp parttion on the 500GB drive.
Windows will complain because it's on new hardware, so you will have to jump through Redmond hoops.

  • Why is it that the new macbook pro processor upgrade option only offers up to 2.8 Ghz with Intel Dual Core i7, when back in Sep 12 I bought a 2.9 Ghz Intel Dual Core i7 Macbook, is the new one tuned to go much faster anyway?

Why is it that the new Macbook Pro processor upgrade option only offers up to 2.8 Ghz boosting to 3.3 Ghz with Intel Dual Core i7, when back in Sep 12 I bought a 2.9 Ghz boosting to 3.6 Ghz Intel Dual Core i7 Macbook, is the new one tuned somehow to go much faster anyway, or will the new one be slower in fact?  Or does the solid state drive compensate for the lack of increased processor capacity?

The CPU's come from different Intel 'families'.  The older ones are 'Ivy Bridge' and the newer ones are 'Haswell'.  Numbers alone will not determine the efficiency of  CPU.
    Ciao.

  • I bought this MacBook Pro 15.4" 1.83 GHz MA463LL/A with 2gb of RAM for real cheap on eBay because I'm poor and can't afford a new MACBOOK PRO and was wondering what everyone thinks about these laptops and what can and should I upgrade when I get money?

I bought this older MACBOOK PRO 15.4" 1.83 GHz with 2gb of RAM and Leopard 10.5 on eBay for real cheap because I don't have the money to buy a new one like I would like to  do, and it comes with a disk to upgrade the OS to 10.6 and I was wondering what all I can and should upgrade (short of the whole computer) as I have the money to do so? Or did I just get really hosed?

You have the original Core Duo model. 2 GBs is the most RAM you can install, so the only thing you could upgrade would be the hard drive. Doing so is not a trivial task but you can find suitable hard drives and installation tutorials at OWC.
Since yours is a Core Duo model you can upgrade OS X to Snow Leopard, but not to Lion which requires a Core 2 Duo or better.

  • MacBook Pro 160 GB hard drive

    Hi!
Unfortunately I couldn't find an answer using the forum search engine or google. I'm planning to buy a new MacBook Pro 2,2 Ghz. Weight is very important for me, because I will carry it with me on campus everyday. Does anyone know if the 160GB version of the MacBook Pro outweighs the 120GB version? Does it change the battery life?
    Thanks!

The weight of fujitsu's 100GB,120GB,160GB hard drives should not vary enough to notice. The 160 GB weighs 101g/3.57oz.
Does one outweigh the other? Again I don't think you will be able to tell the difference carrying a notebook that might weigh a couple of ounces more or less to a class. I couldn't. I will say that I can when packing a 17in. around as opposed to the 15in.
Battery Life would more likely revolve around your own energy settings and your own personal use. If you're asking if part of the battery life is dependent on the size difference of the hard drive, the voltage requirement being 5V +/-5%, again depends are your needs. But I really haven't seen any comparisons. I'd say get what you really need in the computer to get what ever it is you want to get done the fastest and easiest, then you won't care about that extra ounce or two.

  • Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15" i7 or new MacBook pro 13" i7?

    Hi,
I would like to renew my white MacBook from mid 2009. I haven't decided yet but I have two options in mind, a MacBook Pro 15" from mid 2010 with an intel core duo i7 (I think it's duo) running at 2.8GHz with an integrated card, the intel HD 3000 and a dedicated card, Nvidia Geforce 330m with 512MB of dedicated VRAM, a month old mother board and battery and a hi-res anti-glare display with 7 months remaining of apple care all for £1000. My other option would be a new MacBook Pro 13" with a dual i7 locked at 2.9 GHz and no dedicated graphics card for £1035 from amazon.
I would mainly use it for photo editing using Adobe programs and occasionally some video editing and video gaming.
Which one do you think is more powerful?
ps: I would use an external monitor, 8GB of RAM and an SSD on both
    Thanks

    MacBook Pro 15" 2010
    Intel Core i7 2.8GHz M 640 Arrandale Cores 2  (2867)
    8GB max RAM 2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512MB (15.85) (369) and Intel HD Graphics 3000 (10) (309)
    MacBook Pro 13" Mid 2012
    Intel Core i7 3520M Ivy Bridge Cores 2 (4519)*
    16GB RAM max actual (8GB Apple) 2 - 204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
Intel HD Graphics 4000 (unknown) (465)*
The 13" is a more powerful machine and it has more RAM capacity.
