New Macbook Pro 17" doesn't sleep when lid closed, but works if done manual
I never had this problem with my last macbook pro. This is the new unibody 17"
The computer will not go to sleep when I shut the lid. The screen stays on (the apple logo glows). And the little light on the right stays solid (no blinking).
Yet, when I go to the apple in the top left of the screen and manually put the computer to sleep, it goes to sleep very normally.
Please Help!
Tim

New Macbook Pro Retina continually re-starting when lid is closed - Kernal Panic included
Hello,
I called 800-MYAPPLE for tech support but they were not able to help me at all, hoping someone here can help. My new MacBook Pro Retina has been continually re-starting when the lid is closed. It does not happen every time, may 20% of the time. I am running Windows 8 on Boot Camp if that piece of information is important. Here is the latest kernal panic from the log:

MacBook Pro 17" doesn't sleep when top is closed
The problem is described in the title of this thread. Is there a .plist file where the setting for this may have gone wrong.
Have had the MacBook Pro about 5 months. It has functioned normally during most of that time - the computer went to sleep if there was no input for a set amount of time, OR immediately, when the top was closed...until recently. Now, shutting the top puts out the monitor and shuts down the hard drive, but the computer does not sleep until the set amount of time passes, and the computer then sleeps due to inactivity.
May be due to some screen "savers" I installed (from uselesscreations.com and sandiegoscreensavers.com). But I'm not as much looking for causes as a solution to restore default behavior. I suspect a .plist file setting to default values would do it, but which one(s) ?
Thanks for any solutions or clues.Welcome to Apple Discussions!

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304372
Thank you for taking time to read my question and for offering help. But, no, that article does not apply.
The article describes a different problem (monitor failing to go out) to mine (computer failing to go to sleep). The article also describes a cause that cannot possibly be the cause of my computer's problem: Boot Camp Beta. I have never installed Boot Camp Beta, nor any other non-OS X compatibility software, on this computer.

MacBook Doesn't sleep when lid closed, then grey screen
When I close the Mac Book it does not go to sleep. In other words, the Apple light on top does not go out. When I open it, that grey multi-language screen is there that says to restart. This is a new problem. I've been running SL since day one.
Try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC). If this doesn't help, try Using Apple Hardware Test to see if some hardware problem has developed in the MacBook.
Note: the grey multi-language screen that says to restart is an indication of a kernel panic. See Mac OS X 10.6 Help: If “You need to restart your computer” appears for more general info about resolving this. -
Hi,
I purchased Huawei Dongle and trying to connect with my new MacBook Pro (OS- Mountain Lion) USB port 3.0 but unfortunately it does not support.
When I plugged in my macbook the power is flowing in dongle due green light blinking twice in every 3 sec but no connection found or diver shown.
Please let me know how I have to use it. I got some suggestion for USB hub 2.0 but It does not make any sense and driver installation.
So please suggest proper direction to use it and provide link to install any driver.
Thanks
Tauheed AhmadYes Clinton I did same, but they were (Huawei customer support) surprised about this problem, They behave like they have no idea about USB 2.0 and 3.0 knowledge. They handsUp that reason I posted my problem in this forum.
So is there any better solution to use any mediator between these USB version handling, Please let me know.
Thanks

How can i restore my new macbook pro. Lion is installed from the beginning, but I have no cd. What am I suposed to do?
Boot your computer while pressing Command-R. You can reinstall Lion from here. Covered here:

Sounds like you got it installed and activated. Don't forget your updates.

recently bought new macbook pro , transferred data over and thought microsoft office would work on new laptop. Icons are there , although requires key codes and I don't have my key codes anymore as dog chewed the packaging!! should i just buy new software package ? I am told that this is a microsoft issue not a mac issue !! But all my other data on the old macbook pro transferred over even the icons for office for mac on the bottom app bar. only now I can't open any of my word or excel files without key code! I thought that there may have been something that could be done before having to bite the bullet and fork out for new software package.??
If this is Office for Mac 2011 then it will work on your new computer. Reinstall it. If you don't have the key code call Microsoft's activation line to get a new key code. Explain that you lost the original key code and want to install Office on your new computer.

I used to download new podcasts to my old MacBook, plug in my iPod, click the Synch button, and not only did the new podcasts get copied from the laptop to the iPod, but iTunes on my laptop would show which podcasts I'd already listened to, so it was easy to delete the old stuff, synch again, and the old podcasts would be gone from both the laptop and the iPod.
When I try to do the same thing with my new MacBook Pro (which I set up using the Migration Assistant to copy apps, including iTunes, from my old laptop), that doesn't happen: When I download a new podcast, plug in my iPod, and hit Synch, the new podcast isn't copied, nor does iTunes show which podcasts I've listened to since the iPod was plugged in the last time.
What used to be quick and easy is now cumberson and, because it's hard to remember which podcasts I've listed to and which I havened, error-prone!
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
RichardThe installer DMG will be in the Applications folder
I haven't tested this, but it seems somewhat at odds with this recent MacWorld article, which gives a method for "capturing" the Lion installer downloaded via the Recovery HD, and then creating a bootable installer volume from it.
Create a bootable Lion install drive for newer Macs
The article is meant for Macs that came pre-installed with Lion and therefore can't use the App store. The article describes a procedure to retrieve the Lion download not from /Applications but from a folder named "Mac OS X Install Data" which gets created at the root of the drive where Lion is to be installed. It's tricky, because normally that installer self-launches immediately after the download, and then deletes itself afterwards.
They distinguish this procedure from an earlier, simpler one that can be used if Lion gets downloaded via the App store - they reference an earlier article for that situation, which does involve retrieving the installer from /Applications. That method has been publicized in many places.
The inference for me was that the Recovery HD does not download anything to /Applications - otherwise the earlier procedure would work, and this new article would be unnecessary. As I said, thoiugh, I haven't tested anything. -
New macbook pro wont wake from sleep
Hi everyone, I got the new macbook pro 15 inch with retina display about a month ago, the problem is it will not wake from when the screen goes to sleep, not all the time but enuff for me to want to throw it out the window, when it is in sleep mode i go to touch the touch pad then the keybord lights up like its about to work then dies and i end up tuning the computer off from the off button.
I have been on the phone with apple for many hours and its doing my head in and losing my mind and they have done a re set, a re install and also after that didnt work we wiped the computer and downloaded the software directley from apple and started fresh again " AND STILL DOES NOT WAKE FROM SLEEP " i have taken it back to jb hifi where i got it from in Liverpool westfields and they said sorry we cant help you and apple are saying you have to take the computer to apple and leave it with them for a few weeks, very hard for me as i use the computer everyday to run my business and i feel ripped off big time they should replace it straight away.
Has anyone had this problem before ? any ideas ? thank you very much for you time. DaveApple has replaced systems for others after several tries at repairs have failed. Find an Apple Authorized Service Provider and take it in for service, as Apple support directed. Apple would have replaced the system outright in the first 14 days of ownership. After that, you need to give them the opportunity to repair it under warranty.
Since you use it for business, have you asked if the Apple Authorized Service Provider can provide a loaner? Or considered renting one for the short period it would be repaired? Or talked to the Apple Authorized Service Provider about expediting repair? -
Macbook Pro 13" will not sleep when I shut the lid
Hello Community,
This is my first time using the forum. I have a macbook pro 13" 2009 model. Recently I had my MBP connected to an external monitor. I shut the lid while it was connected to the monitor and forgot to turn off my bluetooth mouse. Later that night the mouse was bumped, waking my macbook and setting it to clamshell mode. I put it to sleep again, opened the lid and woke it, but the LCD on the laptop did not turn on. I reset the PRAM and the NVRAM with no luck. I disconnected the monitor, rested the P/NVRAM and it would boot with the laptop screen and once everything was loaded my screen went black and then went to sleep on its own. I tried powering on and off using the P/NVRAM key commands...and nothing. So I opened the bottom case and physically disconnect the battery, reconnected the battery, put the bottom plate back on and powered it up. The screen began working again, now I have a new problem, the MBP WILL NOT sleep when I shut the lid anymore. I even reinstalled the OS and still no luck? If anyone has anything helpful that I could try to get this feature working again it would be much appreciated. If there is some terminal command I could try or some other troubleshooting method. I even put a magnet by the right side of the keyboard to try to trigger the sleep switch.
Any advice would be appreciated.I resolved my issue in a very unlikely way. In my earlier post I mentioned that I wiped my hard drive and was starting from scratch. Well I reinstalled windows 7 through bootcamp and it fixed my sleep issue. That's right folks...Windows fixed my mac. I think that it was an EFI issue. I think this because windows 7 uses EFI and during installation it must have reset the sleep values to normal. I feel when you reinstall Mac OSX the EFI partition on the drive should get wiped and reinstalled as well. I also feel that apple should have an option within System Prefs for the user to select what the way is that the computer responds when the lid is shut instead of the ritual of trickery and problems that the clamshell mode can cause.
Hope this helps someone. -
Macbook Pro wakes up from sleep when express card inserted
Hi,
my macbook pro (no unibody, 10.5.7) wakes up from sleep when I have my express card 34 (Hama 16GB) inserted. Is there any trick to disable wake up when a drive is inserted? I tried to eject the disk before going to sleep with a shell script but it automounts the device... I attached my log... I hope somebody can help! Thanks a lot!

Well I figured that out... I hoped that there was a way to prevent system calls, regarding devices, to wake up my macbook pro... something like: forbid interrupts while asleep
If you ever hear of a way to fix it please let me know...
I think a solution would be to disable automount on the express card device... I use it for my time machine backup and really DON'T want to remove the card every five minutes...

MacBook Pro goes out of sleep when unplugging the the power cord
When my MacBook Pro 13'' is in sleep-mode with the lid down and with the power cord plugged in,
if you the unplug the power cord the computer goes out of sleep-mode.
The same when it is in sleep-mode without the power cord, it goes out of sleep
when the cord is replugged in, although the lid is still down.
Anyone who have had the same problem?I'm having the same issue! I took it to the Apple store, they tested it all out and none of the techs were able to fix it or heard of the issue before.
They told me to reinstall OSx which I did and same issue. -
Ok so I recently got a new MacBook Pro and my external hard drive will let me see what I have on it but wont let me save. It worked fine with other MacBook Pro's with snowleperd but dosen't seem to work with my Mountian Lion.
Open Disk Utility
Select the external drive
Then read the parameters for that drive

My new Macbook Pro (or how I got an heart attack but refused to die)
I have been using linux for many years now, and have had some really good experiences with it. The good thing is that you can do whatever you want in linux, the bad thing is that it takes so much time. For many years this wasn't a problem, but since I started studying music I've been pretty busy with touring and recording, and configuring linux takes too much time. Therefore, I was advised to buy a Mac, and so I did. It took two weeks to arrive, and I barely slept those weeks, because after reading about the new Macbook Pros(mid 2009) on the Apple webpage I was stoked. When I got it I almost **** myself! I was so happy when I got it! The first bad thing I noticed was that you could easily push the left side of the undercover down a little, which didn't make it as solid as I thought it would be. But, that was just a little detail. The first thing I did after watching the intro video was to play around with it, and after half an hour, I heard the disk spin faster than usual, then stop, and then it made a beep. Strange, I thought, but went on to format it and reinstall Os X without much of the crap that followed it, so I could get more space, even though I had upgraded it so I had a 500gb 7200RPM hard drive. After reinstalling it I did the usual stuff: add my mails to Apple Mail, get MSN, install music applications etc. During this, I would still get that faster spin, followed with a stopping of the hard drive, and a beep. Still strange, and now even annoying, but I thought that it's alright. A few days later I did a test recording with my jazzband, and we did an amazing recording! As it was all improvised, we were very happy to have it recorded. What we discovered when we played it back though, was that it made a strange noise several places in the recording. I didn't know what it was, but I was really ****** that it ruined the recording. A few days later I was recording something on my midi-keyboard internally, and then I heard that spin and beep again. When I played back the recording I heard that noise just where the beep had been, so I just figured that when the hard drive spins and beeps, it have a hard time saving what's being recorded, and therefore it ends up being noise. I got ****** off, as I had spent 2660USD(with student discount) on a machine so that I wouldn't have any problems, but ended up having one anyways. I called AppleCare and explained the problem, and they said that they would call me back with a solution. Three days later I got a phone, and they told me that it was because the hard disks get put to sleep after some time, and puts something on the hard drive to protect it, and that's what's making the noise. My answer was:
1. IF that was the case, how come you make it like that, so the hard disks are put to sleep when active, like when you are recording?
2. IF that was the case, how come you make it like that, so it makes a noise in the recording when they are put to sleep? and
3. That's not the case, as I don't have that option enabled, both with or without power supply.
He didn't have any answer to this, and said he would call me up later. Three days later he called me up and told me that the noise was most probably because of noise caused by ground loops. I told him that I have read a little about it, and that it most likely wasn't that, but he still sent me an informative mail on how to fix it. I read it, and followed it, but as expected: nothing got better. I told him that, and he said that he would look into it - after two weeks of vacation. As I start my study on August 11. and are going to record from about that date, I can't wait, so today I called AppleCare and spoke to another guy. He let me wait 20 minutes on line(my expense, ofcourse), before saying that they didn't have an answer now, but would call me back tomorrow.
I also bought a Mighty Mouse with the Macbook Pro. I was well aware of the fact that it isn't configured for right click, so I configured it when I plugged it in, but still right click wouldn't work. I called AppleCare and explained, and the guy told me that "it is a very special mouse". He explained how to use it, what I already knew, and as I didn't have more money to call with, the phone ended the call. Needless to say, it still isn't working properly. The right click works every now-and-then, and the buttons on the side works once a week.
As I already told you, I am a musician. After not having to spend times fixing things, like in linux, the music software was the biggest reason I got a Mac. I bought Logic Studio, and was amazed when I got it. It was great! ...for 20 minutes, then I got this overload message, despite the fact that I had two tracks with a couple of loops, and a brand new computer. This bugged me very much, but what was worse was the fact that two weeks later, the new version of Logic came out, and I got no discount on upgrading.
As you might understand, I am starting to get really ****** off. I called Eplehuset, the most official Apple reseller in Norway, and they told me it would take two weeks to fix my Macbook Pro, and that I wouldn't get a machine while waiting. Since I start in the university in 8 days, I can't do that. I just have to load off some of my rage here, and I also hope that you have some tips on how to fix the hard drive. My eyes just glazed over...Please in the future break down each of your issues with paragraphs separated by two carriage returns. It would be much easier when trying to address your issues.
Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse -> Mouse
And edit your mouse settings to do what you want it to do.
Secondly, this is not the place to vent. If you have a complaint, there is:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/
or http://www.apple.com/contact/
We are just end users here helping other end users.
Third, from my understanding, it would appear you are concerned about the noise the hard drive makes when it falls asleep? Why not put your machine in screen saver mode instead? Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver turn off all Energy Saver settings, or set them to run Never.
Fourth, if your machine was purchased just a few days ago, you may still be able to get an exchange from the store, quicker than you can get a repair done. You may want to look into that possibility.
Fifth, it does appear you found the Logic forum. I would persist in asking there how to solve your technical issue with Logic regarding the audio. It may be you don't have to do anything special to the hard drive. Remember audio can be transmitted by wire, avoiding ambient sounds.
Good luck!
