New Macbook Pro advice please
I'm in the market for a new MBP. Man I'd love to snag one of those snazy new jobs but I just don't have the money for it right now Currently I'm running a 15inch mid 2010 model. This model can only handle 8 gig of ram and does not have the hi rez display. This issues I'm having are pretty much the norm, machine is running slower then I can work with. My job does not require me to have a graphic art level machine for I do more BI type work. That being said I do run various VM's which are starting to pull down the performance of my machine. These could be VM's hosted in VirtualBox or Java based VM's. I'm running a few copies of Tomcat all the time and really just needs something that can handle crunching the numbers and power these applications. So what I'm thinking is having the 16gig of ram would offer the space I need to run more apps in memory and limit some of the paging. Also getting a SSD should help increase the IO transfer quite a bit. My only concern is this, would a MBP like this be better then just getting a lower end new MBP? I can get the one I linked with 16gig of ram and a small 120gig SSD for around $1600. Still not chump change but something I can handle a little more. For that price, would getting a new MBP be the better option? Thing is, it's not like I can upgrade that new version MBP down the road at all with a faster chip or video card. I'm still stuck with it and if it's not really much better then the referb I might think about going that direction. Could really use some advice from folks that know more about the versions of these MBP's and their performance. I hope I gave enough information so you understand my needs but if you need more please let me know and I'll get that up here. Thank you very much!

I would not buy a Retina machine at this time (seems that you've come to that conclusion, too). Instead, I would go shopping for a refurb mid-2012 non-Retina 15" model. You'll be able to upgrade the RAM to 16GB, install a SSD in it (and SSD prices are falling right now) and it should serve you well for a good 3-5 years. There haven't been any complaints here about that particular model and, although Apple will likely introduce new MacBook Pros this year, I'm sitting on the edge of my wheelchair wondering if the 'open' architecture of the non-Retina models will be in the new line-up (or not).
I would make sure that you get the model with a 1GB video card (something that I regret that I didn't order with my 2011 model) and the fastest processor that you can afford.

Unsuccessful data transfer onto my new macbook pro- please help
I have just upgraded to a new 2.16GHz core 2 duo macbook pro and tried last night to transfer my data via firewire using the apple start up set up from my previous 1.83GHz core duo macbook pro bought in March 2006. Unfortunately there were errors in transferring my user folder. I subsequently used migration assistant with the old macbook pro in target disc mode and the same error occurred. I have now manually transferred my user folders by dragging them from the target disc old macbook pro drive into my new user folders in the HD of the new macbook pro. Please can anyone advise me whether this is all I need to do to have my user files on the new macbook pro ie are there any other files I should move over from the old to new computer? The applications transferred in the initial set up and several folders in my HD and it seems only the user folders didn't.
Can someone explain why this happened also please? I have checked the new HD with disc utility and it has no errors.
I have transferred files from several powerbooks in the past using the initial set up or migration assistant and haven't had problems like this before? I wonder whether the new computer is faulty? Please can anyone advise? ThanksWelcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can only sync the iPhone with one Mac or PC, so your Mac is asking you to erase the device because you synced it with another Mac or PC. To avoid this, I recommend you to copy the "iTunes" folder of your old Mac or PC (in Music folder) to the Music folder of your Mac, so you'll have the same data on your Mac as the data you had on the PC.

Please read my question carefully, this is, I think, a question for the experts. It's not the usual name change question.
When I setup my new MacBook Pro, something slipped by me and my computer was named First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro (using my real first and last name).
I changed the computer name in Preferences/Sharing to a new name and Preferences/Accounts to just be Mike. I can right click on my account name, choose advanced, and see that everything looks right.
However, If I do a scan of my network with my iPhone using the free version of IP Scanner, it lists my computer as First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro! And it lists the user as First-Last.
So even though another Mac just sees my new computer name, and my home folder is Mike, somewhere in the system the original setup with my full name is still stored. And it's available on a network scan. So my full name might show up at a coffee shop.
Can I fully change the name without doing a complete re-install of Lion and all my apps?One thought... you said the iPhone displayed your computer's old name? I think that you must have used the iPhone with this computer before you changed the name. So no one else's iPhone should display your full name unless that iPhone had previously connected to your Mac. For example, I did this exact same change, and I use the Keynote Remote app to connect with my MacBook Pro. It would no longer link with my MacBook Pro under the old name, and I found that I had to unlink and then create a new link under the new name. So the answer to your question is, there is nothing you need to do on the Mac, but rather the phone, and no other phone will display your full name.

I recently purchased a new MacBook pro with Retina display, to better manage Aperture and Photoshop. I took the advice of the genius (and after spending all night messing with permissions, etc.), opted out of using Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant and decided to transfer my files manually (as the two systems weren't merging properly the first time -- it was a giant mess). Long story short, I tried to transfer everything from my previous MacBook (operating on 10.5.8 with Aperture 1), and Aperture 3 couldn't handle it. It was crashing, and crashing so badly that NO button could be activated in the program (I FINALLY got Aperture working by disabling previews, and by moving from a managed library to a referenced library).
I initially dragged and dropped all photos from my previous MacBook to my external, and imported. I obviously lost folders, edit history and any other information that I needed to know what edits had been done on the file. Additionally, any movie that had been imported into Aperture was corrupt (the file was not transferring over correctly). I searched and searched for different methods, and finally found that I could export each project from my original MacBook as a "Library" and consolidate masters, or not, etc. I took the time and did this for each project. When I went to import these into Aperture 3, it said I was not able to because the libraries were from a previous version of Aperture.
Is there any way to bypass this? Or another way to transfer my projects? I understand I won't be able to do this for my entire library... but I'm wondering if there's any way to transfer my changes made, projects and details from Aperture 1 to Aperture 3? (and for those who might pose upgrading my original MacBook as an option, I cannot. It's too old. I think the best I could uprade to is Aperture 2, IF i can update the OS. Though, I definitely don't think I should be forced to do that since I've aleady re-invested in a new computer, AND had to re-buy Aperture for the new one.
Any/all advice is VERY much appreciated, as I really want to move forward and FINALLY start appreciating this program and computer (i.e. my investment) and move forward business wise. Thank you!Hi Jack,
Thanks for responding (as it seems as though no one else has been able to provide any insight as of yet)! Not sure if you saw my recent post, but the version of Aperture on the 2008 MacBook has been upgraded to 3.1.2 (not sure how; I bought it in 2009, but only have OS X 10.5.8... which apparently can't house 3.1.2 of Aperture, but hey, like many other anomalies i'm encountering, I'm no longer surprised!). I am unable to upgrade it any further, as it warns me that my OS X does not fit the requirements. I exported the projects as libraries; however, like I posted before, apparently these are from too old of a version for the new Aperture (3.3.1) to handle and import.
It's getting to the point where I'd almost pay to upgrade the OS X on my previous MacBook (10.5.8) to something newer in order to THEN update Aperture to a newer version; however, my previous MacBook simply cannot handle this (the specs are awful -- hence my decision to save up and upgrade to the newest MBP with Retina).
I've spent hours upon hours transferring files, libraries as projects, previews, versions, even masters (though, apparently some of them aren't accessible?) with no luck. I've rebuilt the library and reprocessed everything. And this is all after having to return one MBP already since Aperture 3.3.1 is glitch-y as it is, and froze everything for having a "managed library". So, now that I know that I have to deal with a referenced library in Aperture... I just need to actually transfer my previous library to my new one (hopefully WITH adjustments since these are years worth of photos and work).
Again, any help is appreciated. I've lost enough sleep, time, and vision health over this at this point.
Also, I know Migration Assistant is an option, I was told that it wouldn't work properly anyway because of the different operating systems, and the potential for problems. -

Are yoy sure that Apeture is not in the Applications folder of the new system? If it is move it to the trash and the App Store will let you download Aperture from it.
You will need to make sure you use the same Apple ID you used to purchase it in the past.

If the old laptop was a mac also, then use your Time Machine backup to restore you user settings and files.

No one from Apple here - we're just users like you. All I can tell you is that electronic fail and with MacBook Pros (and most notebooks) the components are so integrated as to make a repair to the logic board practically impossible, hence the high prices charged for repairs.
Only you can decide if you want to have your computer repaired or put the money towards the purchase of a new computer. If you do decide to purchase a new unit I would suggest that you also purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan which increases your warranty from one year to three years.

I have a new MacBook Pro with Iphoto installed when purchased. When editing a photo, primarily orientation changes, the slideshow initially displays the photos in proper orientation. However, after leaving Iphoto and shutting down the computer, and then going back to run a slideshow the photo displays back to its' original orientation, that is, the edit-change was not saved. Please help...the program information says all edit-changes are automatically save and therefore there is no save command, but my changes are not being saved...thank you for any suggestions...HM

Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database

I bought a new MacBook Pro several months ago. I keep losing my wireless connection (my wife, sitting several feet from me has no problem with her iPad2). I find the quickest fix ix to turn Airport off and back on. Very annoying. Suggestions please?
What kind of wireless router are you using? more importantly which protocol are you connecting with? Are you and wife connecting using the 2.4Ghz band? or do you have a dual band router that offers the 5GHZ band? Are you both connecting vie 802.11 a/b/g or n?
The best thing to do is to go into SYSTEM PREFERENCES and select NETWORK, then select AIRPORT and click on the ADVANCED button.
Under the AirPort tab you should delete all the preferred networks and only add back in your network with the proper security settings and passwords.
If you hold down the option key on your keyboard while clicking on the airport icon at the top on your macbook pro. you'll seesome data that will tell you what band and mode you're connecting at, as well as in an indication of signal strength (RSSI) if you write down and post back that information it'll tell us what's going on. -
