New MacBook Pro App Migration results in strange icons

I recently got a new MacBook Pro and went through the automatic Migration Assistant process to transfer info off my Power Mac G5.
1. When it was all over, several of the icons in the dock were replaced with question marks. I figured that was because the apps in question were PPC and not intel/universal. So, I just deleted them. No big deal.
2. Then I noticed several Palm folders dating from several years ago relating to a now discarded Palm PDA. I deleted those files, but the trash won't empty, stating that "the operation cannot be completed because the item 'localized.rsrc' is in use. The message repeats about four times with press of the continue button. When I look in the trash, I see two files - Palm Desktop and Palm Desktop 4.1. I have rebooted and tried everything I know to delete the files, but no luck.
3. Photoshop 7.0 was written for PPC but runs in some kind of emulation. Every folder now has an icon to the right of the search field. The icon is a blue electrical plug with the words "plug in" at the bottom. If I hold the cursor over the icon, a hint comes up with a path direction to the "Power PC Accelerator". If I double click on the icon, PS7 opens with some error messages that certain setup files are missing. However, the app will run.
I would appreciate any help with these problems.

I have questions 1 and 2 answered. PPC only software I just deleted. On emptying the trash I got help from and Apple tech. I will post it here for anyone needing to know.
If you have something in the trash that will not delete - in my case an old system resource from a Palm Pilot, drag it out of the trash and rename it REMOVE.rtf. Then open TEXTEDIT and create and save a blank file named REMOVE.rtf. It will overwrite the other file, basically destroying it. The new REMOVE.rtf file can then be deleted normally.
On the third issue - the Photoshop Plug In icon sitting next to the search field in every folder heading. I was able to delete the Power PC Accelerator file that was the source of the icon in the header, using the above technique, but now the icon is replaced by a question mark in the same place. Maybe I am 1/2 step ahead.

You can get a thunderbolt to firewire adapter. You can then get a firewire 400 to 800 cable and put the old computer in target mode. Then you can follow these instructions.

  • MacBook to New MacBook Pro + apps

so i finally got myself a new MacBook Pro and want to use time machine to restore my current macbook setup. will using this time machine backup i use (including applications) bring back such apps as adobe design premium and Microsoft Office 2008 without me having to go through installing all the apps again?
    thanks

Your best bet would be to firewire target disk to your old Mac and use Migration Assistant.. That way you will have an exact duplicate of your your old Mac.Using TM to restore should work also but will take a bit longer you may also bring over some items that aren't necessary. Caveat is that I've never used TM to do a full system restore.

  • Ensuring iPhone will sync with new Macbook Pro without migrating all settings

    Hi,
I recently bought a new macbook pro. I don't want to use the migrate assistant to copy all settings and user profiles, because my old macbook has some problems and I want to ensure they aren't transferred over.
However, I need to be sure that my iPhone 4 will sync properly with my new macbook pro and all my purchased apps will be carried over.
Can someone tell me what specifically I need to migrate to ensure this works properly?
    Thank you!

  • HT1751 I cannot seem to get through this process.  I believe I have copied the library from my old to the external drive, and then to my newer MacBook Pro; but the result is the same number of songs that were originally transferred via the transfer proces

I've tried for a few days to figure out why I cannot be sure that my iTunes back-up to an external drive has "worked" or not.  I finally decided to try to transfer the content from the external drive to my newer MacBook Pro.  I already knew that the number of songs on the newer laptop were fewer than what are on my older one.  (I basically only use my older MacBook Pro now for iTunes.)  But today, still had not luck.  There is still a difference of over 100 songs appearing on the iTunes of the newer laptop than are on the older one.
I'm pretty sure that I just don't undertand the Apple article very well:  "ITunes: back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive."
This would not be so frustrating for me did I not have over 3000 songs, imported from CDs that I myself own, in my old laptop.  The thought of redoing this import is, well, tiring to say the least.

Go through the below forum with similar issue and follow the process mentioned by "Macjack" in the beginning.

  • My new macbook pro does not have a safari icon

Just got a new Macbook Pro and when I logged on there's a ? mark where the safari icon should be.  Also when i attempt to click on it nothing happens.
I have no way of getting on the internet..

Your Safari application should be in your Applications folder. See if it's there. If it isn't post back. How are you getting onto these forums? Through a browser. Then download:

  • Slow New MacBook Pro and Migration

Are there pros and cons to using the Setup Assistant to migrate files and applications from an older computer?
I migrated my system from a PowerBook G4 to my brand-new MBPro.
I've noticed that recently I'm getting some very s-l-o-w performance.
Could this be because I migrated?
Is it a better idea to start fresh and transfer items myself?
So. This is a question, but more of a "is it better to ...?"

The benefit of using the Migration Assistant is the obvious one, fast transition and setup time.
However, when it comes to a PowerPC to Intel transition it doesn't always go as smoothly as one would like. One of the downsides is possible poor performance which you have. The problem here is that at times important libraries are actually downgraded from Intel version to PowerPC version which absolutely kills performance.
Most likely your problems are due to the use of the MA and it is normally suggested that a manual transition be done of it fails such as your case.

  • My new macbook pro seems to be acting strange. Maybe something is turned on that I do not know about?

I shut the lid, the brightness went all the way down and also when I turned it on after a shutdown, the display was set to a custom screen size, similar to the size of a TV's widescreen feature. Any ideas what is going on?

  • Migrating from MacBook to new MacBook Pro

My current model is MacBook 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and new model is 15" MacBook Pro. Old one has firewire 400, new has firewire 800. I think I might need a 6 pin to 9 pin firewire cable ?? to migrate my stuff but the cable sold at Apple Store seems to be failing after a few months according to a number of reviews. Is there another alternative?

Thanks for the link. I found an adapter at OWC that should work. I have an OWC firewire drive with both 400, 800 firewire and USB 2.0. I have a bootable clone of my MacBook on that drive. Would it work to plug the OWC drive into my new MacBook Pro and migrate from the clone? That way I could use the 9 pin to 9 pin cable I already have.

  • Cannot migrate files from old MacBook to new MacBook Pro

I have been trying without success to migrate files from my old MacBook to my new one.  The Migration Assistant doesn't work.  The new Mac recognizes the old one but the old one cannot see the new one.  The old MacBook has OS 10.5.8 and the new MacBook Pro has 10.8.1.
Then I tried migrating from my Time Machine backup, with the external drive still connected to the old MacBook, but it kept telling me I didn't have enough space to copy anything, even when I unchecked everything except my Documents folder.
I went to the Apple Store and one of their "geniuses" told me I could connect the external hard drive directly to the new MacBook Pro and migrate the files from there.  That didn't work either; I got an error message about incompatible software.
The genius also told me that I could back up the new MacBook Pro to the same external hard drive with Time Machine that I'd been using and that I'd be able to restore from backups from either computer, but that's not true.  I cannot see any backups on the drive except from the new computer.  Time Machine does recognize that there is space in use on the drive but will not show me any of the content.
Does anyone know how I can migrate my files, short of copying them to a flash drive and doing it the old-fashioned way?  Thank you!

It is possible to merge accounts but it is not easy nor foolproof. The easier solutions:
    1. Remove the account made in Setup Assistant and change the username on the migrated account.
See Mac OS X- How to change user short name or home directory name.
See Macworld | Changing the short username in Leopard - use the last procedure, "The Full Monty."
    2. Log into the migrated, renamed account and delete the account made in Setup Assistant, then re-migrate your data.

  • I have a Power Mac G4 (2004) and want to transfer all my files to a new MacBook Pro 15.4". Can this be done thru firewire cable or do I have to transfer to an external Firewire 800 hard drive first?

I have a Power Mac G4 (2004) and want to transfer all my files to a new MacBook Pro 15.4". Can this be done thru firewire cable or do I have to transfer to an external Firewire 800 hard drive first?

Do it with a Firewire cable (buy a 800/400 adapter if you need it) - the USB transfer takes a much longer time.
Start up your old PowerMac G4 holding down the "T" key, for target disk mode.
On your new MacBook Pro open "Migration Assistant" in your utilities folder.
Connect the 2 computers by firewire cable and follow the prompts in Migration Assistant.

  • PowerBook G4 using external HD for iTunes to new MacBook Pro

How can I move my iTunes library (all music, movies, ratings history, etc) from my old PowerBook G4 using an external hard drive to my new MacBook Pro?
Migration Assistant will not work due to incompatible versions of the software, and the Apple Store/Training Crew/Genuis Bar couldn't help me and told me to connect to the external HD, drag my music over and start a new library.  But my goal here is to not lose almost ten years of ratings, playlists and history.
The iTunes program files (Version 9.2.1) are on the old PowerBook G4, but all actual music files are on the external.  I know this isn't going to be easy, but how can I make this happen without starting over???
Thank you all for your help,
    EH

I think I know hte issue but not the immediate solution. Your external drive doesn't have the full library, just the media files. The library files which have all the things you see in hte iTunes browser are on your old computer so you don't see it when you plug the drive into your new computer.
You could try copying just the library files from the hard drive of your old computer to the same location on your new computer, then try opening hte external drive. This might work.
Incidentally, mpst people put their whole library, not just hte media files, on their external drives so it is all a neat package for moving between computers.  I don't think, though, that this will be a simple matter of copying the library files to the hard drive because the location references might not work
