New MacBook Pro doesn't recognise external Freecom HHD

Just got myself a brand spanking new 15” MacBook Pro with the i7 processor running (obviously) OS X 10.6.3.
My problem is the machine does not recognise my Feecom 400GB external hard drive (USB). Doesn’t show up in finder or under disk utility. And of course it’s the drive with all my itunes stuff on it.
Strange thing is the drive shows up fine on my black 2008 MacBook (also running 10.6.4) and my old Powerbook, as well as on another PC.
Any ideas what I could try/could be wrong? The new MacBook Pro does recognise some other external usb hard drives I have.
Cheers,
Reb

I would try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk instead of just a verify. A verify doesn't do anything and may not report all issues.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.
Here's a USB faq.Here's Apples article.

  • IPhone 4S doesnt show charge symbol and charges very slowly on brand new MacBook Pro. Not recognised by iTunes. Charges fine on Asus laptop. iPod charges fine on Macbook Pro...

    Hi!
I'm trying to fix a problem I'm having with my iPhone 4S and MacBook Pro.
I did manage to connect it initially and set it up with XCode as well as iTunes.
Today I have spent two hours trying to connect it to my MacBook Pro and I have so far found the following...
iPod 2G - charges from MacBook Pro, Wall Charger, Asus Laptop (works with both my Apple USB cables)
iPhone 4S - doesnt charge from MacBook Pro, but does from Wall Charger and Asus Laptop
                      - Asus Laptop running Linux Mint recognises the iPhone as a device with 'lsusb' and you can browse photos etc
                      - MacBook Pro doesn't recognise the iPhone as a device with the 'systemprofiler' equivalent of lsusb
                      - Interestingly, despite the charging icon not showing, the iPhone either maintains charge or very, very slowly charges
when connected to the MacBook Pro.
Any ideas as to what might be wrong? I've tried both the USB ports on the MacBook Pro and no difference. I've tried the 6 ports
on my old Asus laptop and they all work fine!
    Thanks for your help!

OK.. Went to the Apple Store - they could either book an appointment with a Genius.. or send the phone for
testing and repair. Found out I have a 2 year warranty on it so have a year left.
My research has led me to assume that the USB 2.0 function of my iPhone was faulty from the day I got it (it kept disconnecting the reconnecting but transferred data fast), but soon stopped doing that and ran at about 1MB/s - USB 1.1 speed - and has done this ever since.
The MacBook Pro somehow is trying to use the USB2.0 function and is not letting the phone fall back to USB 1.1.
To test my theory I found an old USB 1.1 hub... plugged it into the MacBook Pro... then plugged the iPhone
into that. Job done. Charging fine, recognised every single time I connect, and only took a few secs to send over my XCode app to the phone and runs fine! I guess this works as the hub forces the iPhone and MacBook both to USB1.1 mode which then works fine! Will just use it like this for a few months then send it in at an opportune moment (want to get some apps out before I lose my device for repair for a while!)
I will in the next week or so test my iPhone on my friend's MacBook Pro (we bought them the same day but I didn't get the Retina cos I like to be able to upgrade RAM, Hard Drive, and replace battery when it wears out). I will also test their iPhones on my MacBook Pro to see whether it really is the phone or the MacBook!
PS I will get WiFi Sync running since transferring 60GB of data over USB1.1 won't be fun... will do a full factory reset on the phone just in case there is an issue there - will post results of this too!

You should just be able to locate the music folder on your exteranl drive, open it and drag the music into itunes!

  • Why wont my brand new macbook pro boot to an external disk?

why wont my brand new macbook pro boot to an external disk?  I have the 10.7.4 on both.  The MBP came with it so I installed it onto the hard drive i have been using the same way with an older macbook pro but the new MBP does not see the startup disk.  So i installed the same version of the os onto the MBP by hooking it up to my imac as a target disk because it would not recognize the install usb stick.  Now the brand new MBP doesnt start up

I had the same issue.  The 2012 macbook pro has a different 10.7.4 build that is not yet available for public release.  It won't boot no matter how much you try.  You need to wait for Mountain Lion and create a start up disk from ML.  Apple most likely will release a 10.7.4 update for the 2012 models, but they are focused on ML now.

Are you not able to start aperture on your old macbook? If you are able to then you can retrieve your serial number by clicking on 'about aperture'
If not then it's a call to apple as the above posts suggest. I did when I lost mine, bear in mind though, they may ask for your original receipt as they did with me and I had to fax it.

  • HT5172 My new Macbook Pro doesn't recognize my card reader (with a CF card inserted).

My new Macbook Pro doesn't recognize my USB card reader with a CF card inserted.  It works fine on my old Macbook Pro.
Do I need a new card reader?  USB 3 perhaps?
I would appreciate any input that you may have.  Thank you.

Hi, closereaching. Instead of spending 12 hours reinstalling your operating system and getting everything back up to date again, which probably won't accomplish anything, why not buy a $10 USB card reader for your Casio's SD card? Or (more expensive, but a much more elegant solution), an ExpressCard SD card reader that can stay in your computer all the time?

  • HT202731 Yosemite on new MacBook Pro is not recognising Seagate or Lacie external hard drives

My Lacie external drive and Seagate external drive are not being recognised by my new MacBook Pro 13" retina with OS X Yosemite 10.10.1.  Initially the Lacie worked, but that has dropped out - cannot find it in disk utilites.
Lacie is recognised by my friends computer with Maverick - OS X 10.9.5.  Currently downloading data and will try to reconfigure the external drive.  Is Yosemite truly not acknowledging other drivers?  USB memory key is fine.  Lacie has been my back up for some years, also Seagate, but on older computers. Suggestions needed to resolve this please.

Contact the manufacturers of Lacie and Seagate.  You need to determine if the models that you have are compatible w/your new OS system and/or comp.

  • No cd or dvd player on new macbook pro. how to install external software

my new macbook pro with retina display has no dvd or cd player. how could i install any external software that comes in a cd like office for mac or any other type of software

I purchased an external superdrive for this purpose. Apple makes one, and so do others. I suppose you could use a drive in another mac via sharing, if you have the necessary hardware. As for office, you can install that via download - that's what I did.

  • My new Macbook pro doesn't have a start-up disc?

I just purchased a new Macbook Pro and it didn't come with an OS back-up disc. What if I have a problem and need to re-install everything?
How do I obtain a disc if I want one?
    Thanks,

    Then you do the following:
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
If you wish to reinstall without erasing the drive first:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • New macbook pro doesn't recognize OS X on old iMac

finally got a new macbook pro to replace very old imac. trying to transfer info/files from old to new but when I follow instructions I get a message saying that OS X is not found on the old imac and therefore files cannot be transferred. but it's there, I use it every day. aargh! any suggestions?

Well. Depending how old the iMac actually is, it may not actually be running OSX on it. Then again, I don't know much history about apple as my MBP is the first one I've ever owned.

  • New MacBook Pro doesn't recognize camera

I just upgraded from my old G4 PowerBook (with iLife 08) to a new MacBook Pro (with iLife 09). I have two cameras, a Nikon D60 and a Casio Exilim Z850. The new MacBook Pro and iPhoto 09 have no problem recognizing the D60... however, the Casio isn't recognized by the new computer/software; all I get is the infinite spinning beachball. My old G4 PowerBook / iPhoto 08 still recognizes the Casio just fine... however, I'm not planning on keeping the G4 PowerBook for much longer; the MacBook Pro was intended to be a replacement. Now I'm just trying to figure out if there's any way to get the new computer to communicate with the Casio. Granted, the D60 is a much nicer camera... but sometimes all you need is a good point-and-shoot that fits easily in your pocket, so I'd like to be able to keep the Z850 if I can find a way to get the new computer to recognize it. Any thoughts?

  • MacBook Pro doesn't recognise new Internal HDD

Hi there, I was hoping to get some help on this ...
I purchased a WD Scorpio Blue 750GB internal HDD and Apricorn kit and used SuperDuper to clone my current internal HDD. The clone copy worked fine and I can boot the OS via the new WD HDD if it’s connected via USB, but when I install it inside, the Macbook doesn’t recognise it and a folder with a blinking ‘?’ appears.
I’ve tried booting up from the disk utility on start up to hopefully select it and that doesn’t work either as it cannot find the HDD.
I’ve tried booting up from disk utility and using my Time Machine back-ups to copy over the new WD HDD but it doesn’t recognise the new internal HDD either.
I did format it before I cloned the new drive to be OS Extended (Journaled) but I didn’t make multiple partitions and not sure if this is a step I'm missing.
When I put the old HDD back in it boots fine.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
    Cheers, Sam

Didn't matter how many times I reformatted, partitioned mapped the HDD when it was connected externally, the issue was was the Super Duper clone. (even though it would start up as an external start up disk.)
Had to install the new HDD internally and reformat it from boot up through Disk Utility then do a restore from a previous Time Machine back up.
    Works fine now, no issues.
