New MacBook Pro in Sleep and Restarts Due to Problem

I recently purchased a 13" MacBook Pro and my MBP will go into the screen saver/sleep mode while I am not using it. However, when I click the trackpad so I can sign back in, my MBP freezes and restarts. Once it finishes restarting it pops up with an error message stating that it restarted due to a problem. I've done a hardware check and I've updated all the software, and no known issues were found. I do not know what could be causing the problem, any ideas as to what might be the problem?

I can see all my backups just fine, but for instance the folder "documents" or "desktop" will have the forbidden sign on top of it. So I can't see what's in those folders, cause I don't have permissions to view them. It's not a big problem, and maybe I should delete all the old backups, I just don't understand why I won't be able to view them.
Are you seeing this in Time Machine, or via the Finder?
Time Machine uses special "deny everybody everything" permissions on it's backups, to keep us mere mortals from altering them via the Finder, as that can hopelessly corrupt them.
We may need to know just how you set up your new Mac.
There are two similar ways to do it; the easiest is to use +Setup Assistant.+ When you first started up the new Mac and selected your language, you were asked if you wanted to "transfer" your users, apps, and data (see #19 in theFrequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum, for details).
If you did not select that option, then you would have made one user in the setup process; restarted, then used the +Migration Assistant+ app (in your Applications/Utilities folder) to transfer things.
It sounds like you may have used +Migration Assistant,+ but are not using the same user account to access the backups. Time Machine won't let one user access a different user's backups.
But try the Browse option, per #E2: hold down the Option key while selecting the TM icon in your Menubar, or right-click the TM icon in your Dock. You'll see a selection screen showing all the disks/partitions that have TM backups on them. Select the one you want, and you'll be taken to the normal TM "Star Wars" interface, where you should see all the backups on that disk/partition.

  • Brand new Macbook Pro keeps crashing and restarting - Mavericks

Hey guys, I just got a new Macbook Pro on Monday and my first time turning it on it was perfect, the next day I turned it on and kept crashing and "Restarting due to a problem", it wouldn't even make to to the log in page. Every time I power it up now I get the same issue over and over, once I make it passed the log in it is usually fine but does crash sometimes randomly but not much.
I have read here that updating to Mavericks has caused this problem but surely when it came with it and is less than a week old it should be fine? (I'm confused as to why the report says my Mac is Mid 2012, I just bought it!!) Also the only software I have installed is Microsoft Office. I do have Silverlight Plug in installed for Netflix which I read can be an issue with Mavericks.
I downloaded EtreCheck and this is the report I have. Please any help will be great!

  • I have a new Macbook Pro running Mavericks and safari consistently freezes. It takes several 'return/enter' presses to get to the page I requested. I have seen other comments and replies on how to fix (clear cache, clear extensions/plug-ins), to no avail.

I have a new macbook pro running mavericks and only using Safari as my browser.  75% of my url requests are 'hung up' and freeze.  I have seen other posts and have tried to clear cache, reset safari, remove extensions, but to no avail.
    Any recommendations?

If it works in a new user account, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

I got a new Macbook pro in March and transferred all of my old files into the new macbook from my old one. But ever since then, my iPhoto just does not open up. It says 'error' every time I try to open it, but I am still able to attach the iPhotos saved to emails. Help! How do I get my iPhoto back?

    Thanks, Sig.

The new one is a 2.3 GHz intel core i7
In going over this, thanks to "tallking it out" with you, I did discover the Text Edit problem.  Because I've still been unable to get the new computer text size (fonts or whatever) to match the old computer, I did not notice that the curser is now different--the line midway down the curser has to be placed on the line I am working upon, otherwise the edits go elsewhere on the page.  Now, with a bit of difficulty, I am able to get Text Edit to work correctly.
If you have any ideas as to why my menu bar and Text Edit type are still so slow, I'd love to have them.
(I went through the process you suggested earlier, re my Trackpad preferences, and found no improvement.)

Ya know what I'm on a brand new MBP just about 24 hours old and you know whats been working amazingly for me. I have a 27inch iMac as well and i've just connected it to my network and been dragging files and apps across the network onto my new MBP. Its really working fast and its flawless. You could always do that option, Just go into sharing options and turn them on for both Macs. Then just click and drag. Of course they have to both be on the same network for this to be possible.
    Look at my network.
Shared is what your looking at.  I click on there see all my computers files and then drag the ones i want form its folder to my MBP folders.  Hope that helps if your looking for a very simple way on a wireless network.

I open Word documents on my Mac using Pages and textedit without any problems.
I also have a copy of OpenOffice and it can also open Word documents without any problems.
Could you please provide more details on exactly what you mean when you say you having troubles opening Word documents? What kind of troubles?

  • I have the new macbook pro with retina and I am trying to back up with wd passport for mac and is telling me it is going to take 7days

I have the new macbook pro with retina and I am trying to back it up, with wd passport for mac and is telling me it is going to take 7days. Any Ideas? Im afraid that means there is something wrong with my hard drive. I have verified the disk and it says everthing is ok.

It seems to be a common problem that those drives don't perform well, at least not with Time Machine.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Post the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.

  • Hello everyone...I got my very first macbook pro just today and i have a problem deleting the "test" user account. if i can't delete it, the system won't let me turn off the system. I don't know what to do! HELP!!!!

hello everyone...I got my very first macbook pro just today and i have a problem deleting the "test" user account. if i can't delete it, the system won't let me turn off the system. I don't know what to do! HELP!!!!

Have you created another admin user? Go to system preferences click users and click the + to add a user; if you haven't already. Once you have another admin user other then the "test" user make sure you're signed out of the test user account. Sign in with the alternate ADMIN USER that you just created or had created already and go back to SYSTEM PREFERENCES and click the same USERS icon near the bottom. Now select the TEST user and click the - sign. This should prompt you if your sure you want to delete the user account. And your done.
New User created and Test User deleted... I hope this helps.

  • I have a new MacBook Pro Mid 2012 and it goes into deep sleep when I disconnect if from AC power.

I have a new 13" MacBook Pro mid 2012 and it goes into deep sleep when it is disconnected from AC power.  I have to press the power button to wake it up.  Is this a known issue or is there something wrong with the MacBook Pro?

There are a few threads about this around. Its a known issue for 2012 non retina users, not sure about Apple. It should not work this way and Apple has not put out an update to fix it yet. Check out these threads for some workarounds. I think I saw if you reinstall and don't update one of the updates you get normal functionality back. Otherwise there are some terminal changes you can make to make it operate mostly normally. I made some changes in terminal.

  • I bought a brand new MacBook Pro Mid 2014, and my battery cycle count is on 2!!

As I said on the question, a brand new MacBook Pro I bought recently which I haven't even put on charge yet already has a cycle count of 2!
I'm just curious if this is normal and I want to make sure that I received a brand "new" one not a refurbished one.
Did anyone else order a new laptop and have cycle charge of 2 or more and is this normal or not?

The factory charges the battery, one cycle, they may then test that particular MacBook Pro as part of the production testing and it ends up with another cycle.  Two cycles is not something to worry about.  If you bought the unit from an Apple store or directly from Apple, it will not be a refurbished MBPr unless they specifically said it was.  They don't do things like that.

  • New MacBook Pro - user name and password question

Okay, I am fired up. I just opened my brand new MacBook Pro 15.4". I purchased it from MacMall and had them install Parallels (I use one program that is Windows only) and Office:mac 2008 Special Media Edition.
Since MacMall installed Office and Parallels (and then Windows XP Pro) they initially set up the user name and password for my MacBook Pro. The user name is simply "user" and there is no password. How can I go back and reset the user name and password at the system level?
BTW, this is my first Mac in 15 years! My firm uses all Windows based machines . . . except me now!

It is possible to either change the account's name, or create a new account. The first (changing the username), does NOT fully change the name. A version of your name (called the short name) remains unchanged.
Therefore, I recommend creating a NEW account. The procedure...
    1) In the Apple menu, select "System Preferences".
    2) Click "Accounts"
    3) If locked, click the lock (lower-left corner) and login (guarantees you are the authorized person).
    4) Click "+" to create a new account.
    5) Assuming you want to be the administrator of your computer, setup the NEW ACCOUNT as "Administrator".
    6) Enter your desired username.
    7) Enter your desired shortname (can be the same, but no spaces and all lowercase).
    8) Enter your desired password.
    9) Click "Create Account".
However, the computer is still configured to automatically login the user "user" at startup. You can change this at the "Accounts" pane of "System Preferences" as well. Proceed...
    10) Click "Login Option"
    11) Change AUTOMATIC LOGIN to either "Disabled" or your new username (your choice).

  • Just bought a new MacBook Pro Retina 15" and am wondering what my best solution for managing Word files would be?

Having been used to my PC Laptop and needing to generate and read Word documents - and the occasional Excel and Powerpoint files - I need to get a better solution for dealing with these on my new MacBook Pro Retina 15".
Should I buy Office for Mac? if so, which version?
Or is there a better way?

Why not try Open Office? It's free and file compatible with MS Office.
