New MacBook Pro - left shift key clicking

Just got a brand spankin' new MBP and have found that the left shift key is "clicking" - while all other keys have nice smooth, quiet action, the left shift key is harder to depress (as though it's getting slightly stuck on something on the way down) and making a loud clicking sound.
Is this something that is easily fixable? Or will I end up having to take it in for a new keyboard?

Thanks for your reply Peter. I restored defaults, and restarted twice, but still nothing. Both keys work on an external keyboard, so I think that it's a mechanical fault. I'll send it back next week when this job has finished- let's hope that it's not part fo a faulty batch.

  • Macbook Pro left CTRL key not working

I woke my Macbook pro from sleep this morning and now the left ctl and shift keys aren't working. They were working fine last night, I was using both keys for photoshop, but now nothing. I've tried remapping the CTRL key to fn using KeyRemap4Macbook, but it doesn't work, even a restart. System Preferences doesn't show any change in keyboard layout or mapping. Has anyone else had this problem? The Macbook wasn't moved last night, nothing new was plugged in, and no liquids were anywhere near it. It's an i7 2.3 with 8gb ram, running Mountain Lion 10.8.2, thanks

  • Left shift key of my new macbook pro retina 13 is always pressed.

My 1 month old macbook pro retina 13 inch model has a problem now. Left shift key is always pressed which results in booting to safe mode.
Currently i have overcome the issue by pressing "option" while booting and used keyremap software to disable "left shift key". Since this a temporary solution, I would like to know what would have caused the shift key to behave like this. If the key not working would have been better, but it is always in pressed state.
Please let me know what I can do to rectify this. If keyboard to be replaced, approximately how much it will cost for the same? I am looking for a positive response....
    Regards,
    Jibin

Hi BobRz, you are probably talking about the screen display which normaly dims during low light conditions, and that's true. but my concern is the keyboard brightness, it suppose to increase in low light conditions, but instead it dims to the point that i can no longer see the letters on the keyboard. I have viewed a youtube video about the normal adustment function, and mine is doing the opposite

  • My left shift key on Macbook Pro Retina (15") is behaving like the F11 key (show/hide open windows).  The key behaves the same for the laptop keyboard and for an external Apple keyboard?  This just started in last week after 6 months of use

My left shift key on Macbook Pro Retina (15") is behaving like the F11 key (show/hide open windows).
The left shift key behaves the same on the laptop keyboard and on an external Apple keyboard.
This just started in last week after 6 months of use.  The right shift key and other keys on the keyboard all appear to work correctly.
    Suggestions greatly appreciated.

I have a solution to this issue now after a discussion with Apple Support.  Some where in the last few weeks, there was a change in the key that would do a Show Desktop under the Mission Control settings in the System Preferences.  Even though the key sequence that was shown for the Show Desktop setting did not include the Left SHift key, by changing this first to having no key sequence and applying that and then changing it back to the F11 key, the Left SHift key issue that I was having has cleared up.
A second issue that was uncovered was that the SSD had some issues (uncovered when I ran Disk Utility using the Repair Disk key).  I had to restart and use the Disk Utility through the Command R sequence to get to the stand alone Disk Utility.  The SSD appears to be running better as a result as well.
Hope that this is of use to someone else in the future.

  • Left shift key on MacBook Pro (10.7.5) malfunction... how to reset?

I have a mid-2011 MacBook Pro, OS 10.7.5. After a water spill, the left shift key on the keyboard now operates as an options key by default. I cannot figure out how to reset the left shift key to perform shift functions by default. Any ideas?

Water spill more than likely damaged your shift key if that was the only key that is damaged.  Did you let your MBP dry completely (48-78 hrs) prior to using it?

  • Broken key on new macbook pro (late 2008)?

I just got my brand new macbook pro and noticed that my right shift key is broken. It is a bit hard to explain, but basically I can only press down the bottom right corner of the key. The top left corner of the key will not push down no matter how hard I push down on it and feels "stuck". Because of this, whenever I am using the shift key on the right side of the keyboard I have to make sure that I press the bottom right part of the key in order for the notebook to detect it. Quite annoying. Is anyone else having the same issue, and is there any work around for this? I am currently in South Korea for an extended period of time and am not really sure I want to take it in to the apple authorized repair centers here, because I have heard some bad stories about them.

    ****, worst case scenario.
In that case, would I have to get it fixed right away or can I just wait until I get back to the california around february/march? Or in other words, would they still fix it for me even though I have had the laptop for about 6 months or do I have to bring it in right away. Because I am out of the country I would prefer to wait until I can take it to an apple store back in the states rather than dealing with it in another country, specifically because I have heard some bad stories about dealing with the authorized care centers here. I just don't want to wait 6 months and have them say that they can't do anything about it because I have already had the laptop for half a year.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

  • Brand New MacBook Pro making clicking noise whenever unibody is touched

This is rather strange. and i find it disturbing.
i just got my brand new macbook pro with i7.... and i put it on my lap, everytime I type or slightly touch the side of the computer (say areas next to the mouse pad), the computer internally is making those clicking noise sound like something is being bent, it is hard to explain, but all the tiny clicking and popping sound....at the start i thought it was the ethernet cable, the metal connectors were flicking against something, but then i realised its not...
when we put our hands on the laptop and type, we are bound to press on the surface of the unibody, and this annoying sound is happening all the time. i can say it doesnt sound like a HD sound, it just sounds like metal clicking against each other or something

I have the exact same problem on my brand new i7 MBP 15. The clicks are very high in pitch and sharp, and startling like something is breaking, and happen frequently. They seem to happen quite for no apparent reason other than, you know, I click the trackpad-button or something. The clicks seem to be coming from the left side... possibly lower left but I can't be certain. (It does agree with your ethernet impression.)
It does not feel acceptable at all-- I'd be very surprised if Apple thinks this is "normal."
The timing is totally random. I can't seem to really cause it on demand.
Anecdotally, it seems to only happen when running on my lap. I can't find anything in my keys or wallet that affects the computers, so I'm not sure if this is related.
And NO, it's absolutely positively NOT freefall detection that's causing this. You can verify this by simulating freefall (safely!). Hold the computer firmly, and lower it somewhat quickly by several inches. You get a very different, soft click that's not whatsoever alarming. This softer "parking" click also comes from a different place in the computer, on the right hand side.

  • Brand new Macbook pro 2011 15" screen shifts

    Hello there
I've had my new macbook pro for 4 days and I've been having problems with the screen.
Time to time the screen would begin to flicker a little for a minute, and finally shift completely to the left. The left part that gets cut off the edge reappears on the right end of the sceen. There is a black bar about an inch thick where the split occurs. The cursor still works at this point, but is useless and I have to restart my laptop.
This shifting has happened 6 times so far I think.
If it doesn't shift, then the screen would turn completely black but it's not turned off (the music that is playing keeps going but is 'stuck')
This blackout has occured 4 times.
The problems are occurring more frequently now.
*lol I was in the middle of typing this on my macbook when it shifted again (this time halfway) and now I'm on another computer and I recovered everything I typed. Thanks apple.
At first I thought it was because of Photoshop cs5 or youtube, both of which were running when the problems occurred. But now the problem occured again without any of those programs running except for Google chrome.
I would appreciated some advice. Thank you

  • New Macbook Pro number keys not working

    Hi everyone,
I have a brand new macbook pro (running 10.6.4) who's number keys suddenly stopped working. The keys from 1 through 9 do not respond at all. Neither does holding down shift, while pressing them. The key rows below and above them work fine. I have the newest updates on the machine, and have restarted multiple times.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

This same issue happens to me frequently. I've lived with it for the most part just because I didn't want to spend my time running down Apple's glitch. I can not tell if it is a hardware, firmware, or software issue. I have a case number which is 163792369 that I've had since June. I've never taken it in because it is not consistent. I'm leaning towards an OS glitch. I have searched Apple's archives and found one reference to it happening on an earlier version of OS-X, but I was afraid to install the patch because of version differences. Please let me know if you get a solution from the customer support. It is somewhat frustrating as this is my first experience with a Mac and I understand it's a complex piece of machinery from a hardware and software perspective, but fresh out of the box the freak'in keys should work.
    Thanks,
    Shawn A. Peterson
It just works??? Most of the time.

  • Right click on XP under BootCamp with new MacBook Pro not working?

Is anyone else seeing this on the new MacBook Pro? (I have the 2.53 model):
I installed WinXP via BootCamp (BC). All went well. I installed the drivers from the Leopard install disk, which seemed to have the latest everything (BC 2.1.1?).
There is a "secondary click" function under the BC control panel in Windows for the trackpad, but it doesn't work at all.
Ctrl-Click also does not work. All other clicking is fine, but it's only left clicks that are allowed.
This reminds me of my original MacBook Pro and Boot Camp beta...

Three fingers and physical click. It's the same in Vista (except Vista's LAN driver works).
Eagerly awaiting the next version of Boot Camp! It's clear it was rushed, from both this and if you insert the CD and autorun (in Vista at least) it pops up with a couple of utilities for a Macbook Air.

  • Brand new MacBook Pro – 'sticky' keys

    Hi all
I just bought a brand new MacBook Pro retina 15", which came with Mavericks pre-installed (currently on 10.9.1).
I've been having a really irritating issue with the keyboard since I started using it. The Mac seems to think that certain keys are 'sticky' – this is not a physical problem, but a virtual one. It's incredibly hard to describe, but basically, every few minutes, a (seemingly random) key will act as though it is stuck down. Not on the physical keyboard itself, but on screen. It really frequently happens when I use command+tab to switch apps. I'll hit the keys once, but all of a sudden the app menu will stay on screen, with the selected app cycling round indefinitely – even once I have let go of the keys. Also, in Photoshop it seems to think the space bar is held down a lot of the time, so I can't click on anything until I hit space again to disable it. Another instance is hitting command+C to copy, and it not registering. So I have to hit it again.
My usual set up is to use a wireless (bluetooth) Apple keyboard and Magic Mouse, with a Wacom tablet plugged in via USB. However I have systematically tried various things to narrow it down. At first I thought it was the Apple wireless keyboard, but that works just fine on my old iMac. Then I thought it could be my (fairly old) Wacom tablet causing the problem, but that works OK on my iMac too.
I have turned off both Bluetooth and wireless on the MacBook, and unplugged the Wacom, and the issue persists even when using the built-in keyboard and trackpad.
Anything I can do, or should I take it to an Apple Store?
    Thanks

  • I uses Time Machine to transfer files and program from old to new MacBook Pro. Aperture doesn't work. Every time I open Aperture the computer need me to key in Serial number. How do I fix it.

    Hi There,
I purchased a new MacBook Pro Retina 15". Since I am using MacBook Pro and I uses Time Machine for backup files and program. Store saleman tell me I can retore my existing program and files from old MacBook Pro to new MacBook Pro computer. After files transfer it seem to be OK. But only Aperture has a problem when every time I open Aperture to edit photos, MacBook Pro ask me to key in the Aperture Serial Number that made me so inconvinent. Did any one have meet this problem and can someone teach me how to fix it, Thanks.
    Nelson

Either the license files were not transferred or it has to be relicensed.
Remove and then re-install aperture. On an rMBP this should take only a couple of minutes.

  • I've connected my external monitor (LG) to my new Macbook Pro 15" laptop, using the adaptor for VGA...the display now has a large black bar along the left side.  No adjustment on the monitor will fix it, no "options" on System Prefs either...any ideas?

I've just purchased a new Macbook Pro, and connected it ot my external monitor (24" LG HD) using an Apple VGA adaptor.  The only resolution that looks good is the 1920 x 1080, but the image does not entirely fill the screen.  There is a large black gap on the left side of the screen now.  It worked fine with my "last generation" Macbook Pro...no adjustment on the monitor will help, and cannot find any System Setting in displays such as "options" or widescreen setting.  I've gone to the LG site, but no "Mac" related tech support issues come up...no forum here seems to deal with this particular issue either...any ideas?

I have the same thing but with a 23 inch HP, worked fine with my MBP 13 from 2009 but the 2011 2.4 i5 does the exact same thing as yours!
Very confused and hoping that some one else can help.
    Thanks

You don't need to delete anything from your phone or you old computer.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer or backup to /Music/ on new computer.
If you cannot use the old computer or don't have a backup...
-> Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device
Then immediately make a backup of your new computer.
Get an external drive and plug it in and use -> Time Machine
