New MacBook Pro Purchase: HDD Speed: 5400rpm & 7200rpm
Hi,
I will be ordering a MacBook Pro from the Australian Online Apple Store tomorrow, and I was doing some research about the hard disk drive speeds, and which is better. I have read so far that of course since the 7200rpm hard disk drive spins faster, it will have a faster read/write speed, but I have already read that this means it will decrease the battery life, produce more heat, as well as produce more noise.
I will be using my new MacBook Pro as an addition to my current iMac, and will therefore not be doing my photo/video editing on it, I will mainly be using my new MacBook Pro for email, word processing, iTunes, iWeb, web browsing, a bit of Photoshop, and other student activities. I do however want my laptop to run smoothly, quickly, without producing excessive heat, and have a good battery life.
So, should I choose the 5400rpm, or that 7200rpm model?
Thanks!
When you first get it the faster drive will help a bit with photoshop editing and encoding in iTunes, PFAD. For the rest the difference will be minimal.
In the longer run, size matters more than rpm. As drives get closer to full they get slower. If I had a choice between a 7200 RPM 320 Gig drive or a 5400 500 Gig, for example, I'd go with the latter every time. It might not be quite as fast when new, but it will usually beat the pants off the other "faster" drive when they both have 250 Gig of data on board and after that the advantage of the bigger, slower, drive will continue to grow, both in speed and stability.
But, then, of course drives keep on getting cheaper, so the other option is to buy the faster, smaller, one now and simply replace it when it starts to get fullish. The drives are very easy to replace on current MBPs.
"Come in Spinner!" (Dymphna Cusack once promised to proof read my first novel. Unfortunately she went and died before I finished it. Well, before I started it. Well, I must start it sometime in the next couple of years before I hit 60. I'm truly sorry, Dymphna. I have always felt I have let her down).
It is a real toss up. Maybe your wallet (and anticipated trends there-within over the next couple of years) , rather than the size or speed of the drive, really holds the best answer! Hey, you could spend the price difference on RAM or software instead!
Cheers
Rod

Migrated to a new Macbook Pro, now can't find my custom fonts
I migrated my backed up computer from an external hard drive to my new Macbook Pro, purchased in July 2014. Running Mavericks 10.9.5, 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.
I am a graphic designer and had many custom fonts on my old computer in a file structure that worked with Suitcase Fusion 2. (Users/Shared/Library (?)/My Fonts) This structure and all my custom fonts are now missing.Try calling AppleCare at 1-800-APL-CARE and try to reset your password to you old AppleID through them, Give them your MacBook Pro's serial number to avoid having to pay for phone support. You may have run out of options to reset your password youself, but they may be able to override you hacker's attempt to keep you out by having you verify billing info stored on the old Apple ID. Any content purchased with that old Apple ID will have to be authorized for playback on your new MacBook Pro with the original Apple ID and password that was used to purchase said content. To my knowledge there is currently no way of transfering ownership of content from one AppleID to another, however after you get your old Apple ID sorted out, you may be able to change the main email to one of your own and change your password to one thats tough to crack to avoid going through this terrible experience again.
Hope that helps :-) -
New MacBook Pro won't open/load .dmg files
I have new MacBook Pro, purchased in January 2014. I have downloaded two .dmg files - and neither will load!! I downloaded the first from www.blurb.com. It's called booksmart. But, after I've downloaded the file, I notice that Finder has it listed as a "document file" ??!? What do I do?? thanks
TextileMama,
have you tried renaming booksmart to booksmart.dmg, to see if Finder then considers it executable? -
Everytime I boot up my new Macbook Pro purchased in March of this year, a pop up appears for just a short second and then goes away, I didn't see this pop up when I originally got my Macbook.
You are still under warranty. Call Apple Care & ask them. Or, take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP. Whichever is more convenient for you. Let the staff see what you see regarding the pop-up.

I have the G Drive 1 TB (GEN4 1TB) external drive purchased in 2010. I need to connect to my new MacBook Pro. I'm using the external drive for media storage of my video editing projects. Will a 800fw to thunderbolt adapter cable work? I understand that using a USB port connection is not fast enough for video editing. I read somewhere the G Drives don't connect well to MacBook Pro.
thanks
larryI doubt this can be relocated or moved so you might want to just repost in the macbook pro area.

Can you afford a new Thunderbolt case and cable? any case with FW800 is going to be slow 72MB/sec and less, and any new 1TB drive is capable of 75MB/s minimum up to 125MB/sec.
Thunderbolt storage can of course when setup properly reach 100's of MB higher using multiple drives.
Use what you have for a system backup or for secondary backup storage.
you might be able to take the drive - most cases allow you to open and swap drives - and use this:

When should I purchase a new Macbook Pro?
I bought my current regular Macbook in March 2008.
The current specs on it is follows:
2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
80GB Storage (32 GB free currently)
The only problems I have with it: I have a small crack on the side where the apple logo is. I covered it up, no other issues with it. Also, I have had issues with the spinning wheel when I run Safari, but I now just use Google Chrome and no issues! I run Onyx about once a week to get it cleaned and verify/repair permissions.
It still runs fine. Not as fast as when I first got it, probably because I only have about 32GB of storage left. I am just wondering when I should purchase a Macbook Pro? I am not too familiar with my current Macbook life expectancy.
Thank you!
p.s. My Applecare warranty has been up for 2 monthsJeremyJ327 wrote:

That is entirely dependent on your usage and needs. Friends who only use their laptops for email, Web, etc. are known to keep their Mac laptops for up to seven years, because you don't need much performance to do those things.
I use mine for graphics, so after a few years it can't keep up with the newest application upgrades. Therefore I replace mine sooner. But I still tend to keep mine for 3 to 5 years. My current MacBook Pro is the same age as yours. It is in excellent shape, and for my purposes the speed is still very good, so I will not spend money on a new MacBook Pro now. I installed a bigger faster hard drive (only $70), upgraded the RAM a while ago, and bought a new battery, because I think this machine still has another 1 to 2 years left in it.
On the other hand, if your job depended on the fast processing of HD video or raw photo files, you should upgrade to a Core i7 MacBook Pro right now. For those jobs, a new Mac might not last 2 years. -
I just purchased a new macbook pro, I transfered files from my old damaged macbook pro using an external case and the original HD. Safari will not open, and shows a message of "quit unexpectedly"

A few questions in purchasing a new MacBook Pro
I have recently become a full Apple fan (I have been a PC person for nearly 28 years), and am in the process of purchasing a new MacBook Pro (as my old HP Pavilion is on it's last legs). As I am in this process, I am trying to decide which MacBook Pro fits my needs, and thought the Apple community might be able to help. Here are the things I am looking for:
1) I did recently finish graduate school, and although I have a steady income, I would prefer to still be economical with what I spend - I don't really need the top-of-the-line model (as much as I'd love the retina display screen), but I do want to get what will fit for me.
2) I typically like my laptops to last 4-6 years. Here is what I typically use my computer for:
-I don't do a lot of gaming no my computers
-I do like watching streaming videos or dvd's a lot
-I do a lot of photo editing - I currently use Adobe Photoshop Pro, but don't know what I will use on the Mac yet.
-I do a lot of reviewing of photos as well
-I also have a large media library (audio and a little video) - incidentally, I DO need an optical drive/cd drive so I can import my music purchases.
3) My computer is currently a 17" screen - while I love the size of my current screen - the price of the larger screens with the MacBook Pro's is almost prohibitive. I'm currently debating betweent he 13" and the 15". This brought up my final question:
The 13" MacBook Pro offers the following for processors: Section 1: Up to 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor; however a second section stated it had an "2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 or 2.9GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 processor". I'm not sure why the 13" had both of these listed as possibilites (perhaps it's in the customization of the computer?) ***Actually, as I am reading the information further, it seems that the quad-cores mentioned on one of the pages are not available in the 13"***
The 15" offers an "Up to 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor (it looks like it's a 2.3 OR 2.7GHz quad-core processor respectively)"
I understand that most current programs are written only for a "dual-core" processor, and as such a dual-core processor will outperform a quad-core processor currently; however, once programs start getting written for quad-core processors, those computers will take a drastic jump forward in processing speed. To be honest, I am not sure which processor I need both in terms of what I'm doing now, and also in terms of running well in 4-6 years. What is the difference in the i5 and i7 processors - is the dual/quad core processing the only difference? Further, what difference is the 2.5 vs 2.9 GHz processor (or for the 15" screen the 2.3 or 2.7 GHz processor)?
I know this was a long winded question, but I want to make sure that I get the most for the money I spend, and that it will do what I need it to for the next several years. Thanks in advance for any help/guidance you all can offer! My buying advice - the 'entry-level' new 15" MacBook Pro. Take a look at the specs. It's a wonderful machine - and you can upgrade RAM and HD to fit your needs without voiding the warranty. I don't know of any apps that I currently run that can't take advantage of the quad-core, and almost everything is 64-bit now.
I'd used the money you saved from not buying an out-dated 17" and put it into software. If you're transitioning from Windows that can add up quickly (which isn't to say you can't run your Windows apps using Boot Camp or a VM like Parallels.
Just my opinion - but if I could buy anything I wanted right now, I'd go with one of the upgraded 15" non-Retina MacBook Pros.

How do I compare the speed of my new MacBook Pro to my old one?
I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro (2.6 Ghz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1600 Mhz DDR3) and gave my old one to my daughter. I used Time Machine to basically produce an exact copy of the old machine; however, in the six weeks I've been using it, I don't seem to see any improvements in speed eg programmes which took several seconds to open still take several seconds to open (I know - learn to be a bit more patient!).
Is there a simple way of comparing two machines? Are there any ways the general public can "benchmark" different computers to allow a direct comparison?Drewsey_woosey wrote:

You might have gotten a newer machine, which is surely faster performing on the hardware side if you run GeekBench, XBench and other tests for CPU, Graphics and UI responses.
However some hardware speeds haven't changed too much, like hard drives which Apple places pokey 5,400 RPM drives in their laptop because it's more stable and takes less power.
Apple likes to add features to OS X to sell more hardware, this "bloat" tends to eat away at the hardware performance you do get when you buy a new machine.
Apple very well can make the UI feel more snappy, however they put speed limits in as they want people to be able to recognize something is happening.
Another factor is you restored from TimeMachine, which doesn't really optimize the hard drive when it restores back.
Another factor is a lot of hard drives come from the factor with bad sectors, which takes time for the drive to discover and map off, this affects read performance.
Another factor is perhaps you bought a 13" MBP, with no dedicated graphics card, so it's running on the Intel CPU 4000 graphics which is greatly inferior to the higher end 15" dedicated graphics.
Another factor is when you restored from TimeMachine your personal data pushed past the 50% mark on your boot hard drive, these sectors and tracks on the hard drive are shorter and further inwards thus it takes longer for the read heads to get data from them.
I don't have to recommned any program for you to test your new hardware against the old one, I know your new machine is probablly faster.
What I suspect has occured is your machine either doesn't have a dedicated video card (a 13", cant' help about that)
or that your running 10.7 (you CAN upgrade to 10.8 which reports are it's a bit snappier)
Does your Mac qualify for free 10.8 upgrade?
I suspect you dont't have a SSD or else you wouldn't be complaining, so that leaves a boot hard drive over 50% filled and/or a deoptimized TimeMachine restore.
What you can do is get a blank, powered external drive and a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner
1: Reduce the content of your boot drive user data so Acitivty Monitor > Disk Usage is below 50% (never more than 80% filled) reboot to see the changes.
2: Use CCC to clone the Macintosh HD partition to the external drive, hold the option key down while booting and boot off the clone drive.
3: Use Disk Utility (on the clone) to select your Macintosh HD partiton on the internal drive, use the Erase > Secure Erase middle selection and wait, this will "zero" the drive and ehen it checks, will map off any bad or failing sectors.
4: When that's completed (takes a few hours) then use CCC to clone the clone back onto the Macintosh HD partition.
5: Reboot and Disk Utility > Repair permissions on both drives, use OnyX from MacUpdate.com to run all the maintainence and cleaning aspects and reboot.
For the OnyX routine, see #12 here: Step by Step to fix your Mac
What you should wind up with is a as snappy machine as possible, your Applications will be written to the "hot band" which is the fastest portion of the hard drive, hopefully any bad sectors which take longer to read from will be eliminated.
If you want to make hardware changes, I recommned getting a Solid State Drive for faster speed, however they can't be securely erased and Filevault has been cracked so that's no protection.

FYI I have a pokey 5,400 RPM drive, butI used the optimization techniques above and it's dam well snappy. I also run 10.6.8 on a Early 2011, which is the last machines that can run 10.6., so because the OS is less bloated I get more UI response.
Other factos I have, I have a 25 Mb/p download Internet speed and a 5Ghz WPA2(AES) ruoter with no leachers or other users. I use Firefox with the broadband tweaks which is even faster than Safari which is the fasest browser on Macs. My web pages lad in about 1-2 seconds onaverage. -
HDD vs SSD for new MacBook Pro and FCP editing performance
I will be purchasing a new MacBook Pro and I'm curious about performance as it relates to large FCP projects. I'm looking to hear from folks who can help me determine if a solid state drive (SSD) would be worth the extra cost. I edit large FCP projects and I'm curious if using a SSD would be the way to go. Will I get better editing performance with a SSD as opposed to the 7200 RPM HDD?
Thanks! As a boot drive, SSDs have exceedingly last fast access times, and great data throughput rates. My Crucial SSD has a write read of about 200 MB/s. I can boot in under four seconds, and access apps, and web sites pretty **** fast.
However, beyond this, I don't see any real, substantial or dramatic gains in editing performance at all as a boot drive. I'd save your money on get more RAM, and best CPU and GPU you can afford. -
Getting a new MacBook Pro: HDD or SSD question
Hey everyone!
I'm about to get a new MacBook Pro, and there'sone problem I need a little help solving.
I could either get a 500gb 7200rpm HDD at noextra charge, OR I could get a 128gb SSD for an additional $90. I'm slightlyleaning towards the SSD for the general reasons you've all probably heard aboutby now.
Now let me just explain my reasoning here a bit. Ishould say beforehand that I already plan on getting a 1TB external USB drive, regardless of which internal drive I get. So space isn't really the issue.
From what I understand, if I were to buy the MBPwith the 500gb HDD and just buy an SSD separately, that would total me around$220 (the price of a 128gb SSD nowadays). However, if I were to buy the laptopwith the SSD and then buy a 500 gb HDD at 7200 rpm, it would cost me $90 + $70= $160. So I'd be saving money by buying the SSD with the MBP it seems, noteven counting the fact that I could sell the SSD for a higher price than what Iactually bought it for!
I know it sounds like I might already have myanswers, but I basically have three questions:
1) Does that argument make sense to you? As in,is there anything I'm missing or not considering?
2) Does anyone know what brand of SSD Apple shipsin MBP nowadays?
3) I was planning on using my SSD for theOS/applications, and using the 1TB HDD for files/music/movies etc. Is that anideal setup or is there something I'm missing about that as well?
I'd appreciate any helpful answers. Thanks!1 - Everyone has their own way of looking at it...
2 - Toshiba but it can always change...
3 - seems ok, iTunes might not really like to have all the files in an external drive but it seems ok...
P.s.- 1TB will not be enough... LOL... try something bigger like a 3TB drive (think future friendly) -
Hi, I am looking at buying a 15" MacBook pro for school and I'm not sure which one I should go with. I'm stuck between the one with the i7 and the one down from that with the i5 and the 500 GB HD. I will be playing some games on it, but nothing too intense, and I am currently using one of the earlier intel iMacs so both will be faster than what I've got right now.
Can anyone tell me if it is worth spending the extra money for the i7 and faster graphics card? Any pros or cons are greatly appreciated (ie battery life, performance gap between both processors etc.). Thanks for your help!I contemplated the same thing and after reading benchmark after benchmark and every review I could Google it basically boiled down to this:
- Between the Core i5 2.40 and 2.53 the difference is so minimal it was recommended by many blogs and reviewers to get the 2.40 and get the 500GB HDD upgrade. You still come out $125-150 ahead.
- Benchmark-wise, there is a considerable performance increase between the Core i5's and the Core i7, but supposedly that increase is only noticeable if you do intensive work like video editing, modeling, photoshop, etc. Here is an excerpt from a review at Anandtech.com which has some good benchmarks too ( http://www.anandtech.com/show/3659/apples-15inch-core-i5-macbook-pro-the-one-to- get/3 )-
*"Core i7 vs. Core i5 Performance Summary*
*The two Core i5 models Apple offers ship with a 2.40GHz or 2.53GHz processor, both with a 3MB L3 cache. The $2199 15-inch MacBook Pro comes with a 2.66GHz Core i7, with a full 4MB L3 cache. Compared to the entry level model that's an 11% increase in clock speed and a 33% increase in L3 cache.*
*While I don't believe there's much reason to go for the 2.53GHz over the 2.40GHz model (L3 cache size remains the same, clock speed goes up by a small amount), the Core i7 is actually pretty decent. For a 22% increase in total system cost you end up with 11 - 15% better performance in CPU bound applications. It actually even feels snappier in general use as well.*
*I'd still suggest opting for an SSD before considering any CPU upgrades, but if you're looking to keep your new MacBook Pro for a while the Core i7 is worth it."*
The GPU's are essentially the same, so gaming in OSX won't differ much across all three models. It's gaming in Windows using Boot Camp that the i7 model with double the VRAM and a faster CPU with more cache starts to make a difference- so I read. I'm guessing it's the greater variety and more demanding games in windows than in OSX. But then of course there is the argument towards "future-proofing", e.g. get the fastest model available and you'll be less prone to early obsolescence. Games will always get more demanding on hardware, especially in Windows.
I ended up basing my decision on the fact that I wanted the high rez matte screen which only comes with the Core i7. I highly recommend it. The ONLY 'con' I can see is the price, but even here we're talking $200-400- the difference between the i5 2.53, Core 17 and i7 with high rez- really not thaat much when your initial buy in is $2000+.
Hope this helps. I'm loving my i7... zero buyers remorse.

I have a new macBook Pro 15 and need to purchase best, easiest usb for backup - help please
I have a new MacBook Pro 15" and need to purchase the easiest, cost-effective USB for backup. I have never done a backup and don't know what to buy. Thanks much from an obvious novice.
Look at these two links to OWC products. Note that one is for enclosures only so an appropriate HDD would have to be added. This at least should give you an idea of what is available.

I just got a new macbook pro. How do I get the 900+ songs that I took off of cds into iTunes on my computer from my iPhone. I had no problems syncing the music I had purchased from iTunes. I have tried to sync it using iTunes match, this did not work. I would like to have access to my full library without going into the user profile of my old computer, which is on my new computers hard drive. I would like to eventually delete the old profile so that I have more space on my hard drive.
