New MacBook Pro 'sees' WLAN but won't allow to select

Hi
So I just arrived home with a new MacBook Pro and tried to set up my inbuilt airport to connect to my wireless router and no cigar. So frustrating. My old MacBook and iMac are able to connect to the wireless router via inbuilt airport but not my new MacBook Pro. I have tried using the assistant and diagnostics and have achieved no joy. The weird thing is that WLAN comes up as an option and I select it wherever possible but when it comes to the last screen in network preferences, where you select the Network Name, it allows me to select it and then in less than a second it reverts back to 'no network selected'. Go figure.
So it clearly can see my WLAN. I have tried to see what setting are different on this MacBook Pro (accessing internet via cable as no other choice at the moment) and my old MacBook and can't see anything obvious. But then again there's not a lot of settings.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated. I love Macs and have been a user/owner for eons but this new one is really frustrating me. Not the usual warm and fuzzy oh I have a new Apple experience. Disappointing.
Fingers crossed one of you out there can help me discover the joy again :-)
Thalia
P.S. I am using an older Belkin wireless router that my MacBook and iMac can recognise in a heart beat.

looks like I hit the nail on the head with that one. Fact is I'm back to 10.5.2 and NO more Airport connectivity issues.
I have 2 black macbooks, a 15 Pro and 2 macmini's. I've had to roll back 2 of them for the same reason, 10.5.3 clearly breaks Airport connectivity reliability, no ifs ans or butts about it.
I'd like to use automator, 10.5.3 fixes many of the problems with that I've experienced but I cannot go to it as wireless is the only way I have to connect.
Here is what my system.log looks like AFTER rolling it back with Archive & Install:
Jul 16 11:51:07 Macintosh kernel[0]: sleep
Jul 16 11:51:07 Macintosh kernel[0]: System Wake
Jul 16 11:51:07 Macintosh kernel[0]: Previous Sleep Cause: 5
Jul 16 11:51:07 Macintosh kernel[0]: EIR is not supported.
Jul 16 11:51:11 Macintosh kernel[0]: AirPort: Link Up on en1
Jul 16 11:51:11 Macintosh configd[34]: AppleTalk startup
there is NO Airport Beacon Lost as before, no connectivity problems. My daughter has a brand new white macbook she bought last week, she has a WRT54G Linksys and doesn't have any problems with connectivity, her boyfriend bought a 15" Pro at the same time, he upgraded to 10.5.3 he immediately started having problems (there IS a reason new ones come with 10.5.2), he rolled his back and it works again.
I've done this several times, apple may know about it but they haven't come out with any fix that I know about. I reported it to them the day 10.5.3 came out. I am not upgrading again until I see a patch that specifically says it addresses Airport reliability.
I don't run parallels, or any other virtual machine, hard enough keeping a vigrin OS up to date. The only 3rd party software I run is Firefox and Office 2004.

    1) ensure iTunes is authorized for your iTunes store account(s)
    2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
    3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPad but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in your library and you can re-populate the iPad with it.
above works for purchases from the iTunes store. for everything else, check out this post by Zevoneer.

  • I am migrating from my old black MacBook to a new MacBook pro over wifi but why does it take SO Long...?  I have about 400 gig to transfer and it says 80 hours!  Can this be right?  Is there a faster way?  Is there a way to cancel the migration?

I have an old black MacBook (2006) and want to migrate to my new MacBook pro i7. The migration assistant offered me the prospect of migrating via wifi.  Stated at 108 hours to transfer about 400 gig. Now revised down to 85 hours. Why is this so so so long??  Is there a faster way?  What happens if I cancel now.  Is there a way to cancel? As there is no cancel button....
Ay suggestion sighing the next 80 hours very much appreciated.

The 2006 MacBook has firewire. Use a cable like this. Boot the '06 with the T key held down until you see the Firewire icon. Connect the 400 port on the '06 to the 800 port on the i7. Run Migration Assistant. 400 GB will still take a long time, but it will be closer to 8 hours I think.

  • I am thinking of being a new macbook pro with retina but after reading the problems with overheating would i be better of buying a dell ??

i am thinking of buying a macbook pro retina 15 but after reading reports of this overheating am i better of buying a dell ?? i already have a imac that has started to overheat when put to sleep unless i close safari down.

Good grief no. I've just done a consulting job that involved Dells, and if you think there are some issues with Apple, wait until you try to deal with Dell. The tech support is awful, they transfer you 4 times then hang up. The product is marginal at best. Google that if you want confirmation.
While Apple machines have had some issues on specific models, for the most part my experience has been very favorable. Especially if you have Applecare. Take the computer in if you have a problem and let the Genius Bar fix it for you.
Your "overheating" issues are probably due to something like Flash running in the background, which just continues to grow in size and suck up machine resources the longer it's on.

  • New macbook pro with mavericks but time machine back up with Mountain Lion

Due to an incident with a cup of coffee my 2009 Macbook pro was unexpectedly destroyed.  However I now have (thanks to Insurance) a new Macbook Pro which runs Maverick.  I have a back up of my Mac from Time machine however my latest back up was using Mountain Lion, am I going to be able to re-install this back up onto my new computer?  If not how can I get my data out of Time Machine onto my new mac?

You need to erase and format the new HD as OS X Extended (journaled), restore the TM backup onto it, and then reinstall Lion to put on the Recovery HD. Best is to do all of that in an ext HD enclosure, ensure that it boots the MBP, and then put it into the MBP. Once that's done and, if the MBP supports it, upgrade to Mtn Lion, which is what Lion should have been when it shipped.

  • My new macbook pro retina recognizes, but can't transfer data from the Time Machine Volume

I back up my old 2008 MacBook Pro to a Time Machine volume sitting on a very new 2 TB drive that is connected to a Time capsule via USB. I got that new drive from OtherWorld Computing about 2 months ago.
I just received a brand new 2012 MBP (retina).
Pondini's page on setting up a new mac says that it's easiest just to transfer everything over the first itme you start up the new machine. (ref: http://pondini.org/OSX/Setup.html)
So, I took my new 2012 MBP, plugged it into the Time Capsule directly with ethernet (I have the Thunderbolt-to-USB connector).
    Then turn it on.
The 3rd page into the startup sequence gives me a choice to "Transfer Information to this Mac". It offers 4 options
    "From Another Mac"
    "From a Windows PC"
    "From Another Disk"
    "Not Now"
    I chose "From Another Disk"
Then it offers "Select the Source"
The sources are 4 blue icons. 2 of them are backups of other machines, ones that sit on the Time Capsule's internal drive. 1 is a small "media storage" space I saved on the internal drive of the Time Capsule.
The important one is "Macbook Pro backup ("StefanTimeCapsule")
This is the one physically parked in the external USB drive.
So.... I select it. It asks me to log on with user ID and password, and then says an endless "Connecting" message
It never gets to the next menu.
If I arrow "back" in the startup window sequence to the "Select the Source" windo, the 4 blue volumes are again displayed, with the word "Connecting" next to the backup I want, strongly suggesting that the "connection" is never fully established.
Just for fun I plugged that external USB drive directly into the USB port of the new Retina MBP, but it was not recognized at all.
    I tried different ethernet cables.
At this point my thoughts are perhaps
    (a) I need a powered USB hub
    (b) I need to somehow have Apple service the Time Capsule (but for what? I don't know)
I could potentially just transfer from the Old 2008 Macbook Pro Directly, but it seems to me problematic not to be able to access the primary backup.
    Any ideas out there?

A picture of a screen that suggests my new MBP Retina never connects to the "Macbook Pro backup ("StefanTimeCapsule")
This is the one that has the files for the backups procured by the Time Machine program. But it can't "connect"-- You 'll see int he sideways pic (sorry!) that the options STILL says "connecting"
Do i have to make these Time Machines more open to connection?

  • New macbook pro... purchases won't transfer?

So I had all my 1600 or something songs on my iphone. I transferred them all to my new macbook using a 3rd party program, then I synced my iphone with my new computer, causing it to delete all the old songs. Then I tried to transfer all the same music back onto my iphone, and it only transferred the 1100 songs that I did not purchase from itunes, and said it was not authorized to transfer the ones that I bought, even though that's completely ridiculous because they were all on my iphone 10 minutes before that.
is there any way I can somehow "authorize" these purchases to be transferred back onto my iphone?
and on an unrelated tangent, the sheer multitude of inconveniences created by itunes superbly anal "don't share music because it is eeeevil" attitude, when I am not even trying to share music between me and other people, but simply between my own various mac devices, has influenced me to never buy another piece of itunes music again. they need some serious reconsideration in their policies, upon realization that they're not only making themselves inferior to other music sites in terms of cost, but also in terms of user-friendly qualities. FAIL itunes, fail.

  • MacBook Pro wifi connected but won't load Internet

I've connected my MacBook Pro to my local wifi connection and it tells me that it is connected, but I can't run anything on it that needs an Internet connection (eg. Google Chrome, Skype etc.)
I've ran the 'Assist Me' checks in the Network Preferences and results have found the wifi connection to be positive..
I am so confused by this!! Somebody please help?!

First contact your ISP.  You need to confirm that the issue is not on their end.
Change your router channel.  Sometimes this is all you will have to do.
Power cycling the router.  Read the router's user manual or contact their tech support for instructions.
    System Preferences/Internet & Network/Network
    Unlock the padlock
    Locations:  Automatic
    Highlight Airport
    Click the Assist Me button
In the popup window click the Diagnostic button.
System Preferences/Network- Unlock padlock.  Highlight Airport.  Network Name-select your name.  Click on the Advanced button.  Airport/Preferred Networks-delete all that is not your network.
Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined."  Click the OK button and lock the padlock.  Restart your computer.

Check to see if an extra entry is present in the DNS Tab for your wireless connection (System Preferences/Network/Airport/Advanced/DNS).
Delete all extra entries that you find.

  • Macbook Pro 10.5.8 won't allow upgrade of iTunes to sync with iOS 7

Macbook Pro Mac OS X 10.5.8, won't allow upgrade of iTunes 11 to link in with iOS 7 iPhone update.
Do I need to upgrade to Snow Leopard operating system? Or Mountain Leopard operating system?
    Help please!

You need to upgrade your version of OS X. Whether it is to Snow Leopard, Lion or Mt Lion (Not Mountain Snow Leopard) for the newest iTunes to work with iOS 7 I'm not sure. I don't own an iPhone and if I did I wouldn't be installing iOS 7 on it.
Oh and let me add you must first upgrade your Mac to Snow Leopard to be able to upgrade it to any of the newer version of OS X. Both Lion and Mt Lion are only availble from the Mac App Store which can only be accessed from Snow Leopard 10.6.7, or above 10.6.8, or from both Lion and Mt Lion.
So no matter which newer version of OS X you end up with you'll need to first upgrade to Snow Leopard.

  • Semi-New Macbook Pro 17" suddenly dark; won't reboot all the way

My Macbook Proo was fine this afternoon.
    Went dark. Required restart.
Each time I do, it gets a teeny bit of bargraph drawn, then goes dark.
Basically, I can't restart (and it was fine.) Suggestions?

You can also try a reset.
Restart the computer holding down the command - option/alt - P - R keys before the grey screen appears. Continue to hold until you hear the startup chime for the second time.
    Reset NVRAM/PRAM
Try an SMC reset. The article covers when this is required, but doing this will not affect anything.
    Reset SMC
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode.  Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • My new MacBook Pro shut down and won't turn on.

I connected it to the charger and there is no light to indicate that it's charging . What do I do ? Should I be really worried ? I just got it about a month ago

If your machine won't charge, you could try an SMC reset - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 - and, if that doesn't work and since you're still under warranty, take your machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them diagnose and fix the computer.

  • Transfer iPhone backup to new macbook pro from old macbook pro

I bought a new macbook pro last week, but, I need to transfer my iTunes library (music, apps, podcast, photos, other) from my old macbook pro to my new macbook pro and the iPhone backup, off course, please, I have read entire hours on google but I can´t found anything, I don´t know what I can do

As roaming gnome noted, to copy iTunes , simply copy the entire iTunes folder.
Just backup your iPhone to the new computer (after you copy the iTunes folder).

  • New MacBook Pro line coming soon?

I am days away from buying a new MacBook Pro 13 inch, but wanted to see if anyone heard rumors of new MBP's coming soon? If so, are there any upgraded features worth waiting for?

I would highly recommend holding off if you can, from what I've seen from several sites is that the new MBP line is within the next month, three at the most. The refresh should include some decent new technology. I would do a google search on "macbook pro rumors" if you want more speculation regarding what may or may not be in the next line. BTW, seriously looking forward to the refresh of the MBP line.

Install logs were fine.  Application installed but wouldn't run properly.  Finally got Adobe support and it turns out to be a file permissions error.  Had to add both applications and myself as accessors of Lightroom folder under path ~/Library/Adobe/  and set permissions to read & write (was read only for everything but system) and apply to all enclosed folders.   Runs fine now.  Including this here in case anyone else runs across this issue.
