New Macbook Pro slower than old one.

I recently got a new Macbook Pro, unibody, with 2.8 Ghz core 2 duo and 4 GB Ram. I am upgrading from a Macbook Pro with the previous body design, that is 2.5 Ghz core 2 duo and came with 2GB RAM but I upgraded to 4GB myself.
I got the new MBP, migrated some applications and my settings. Now when I start Firefox I sometimes get the spinning beach ball for a few moments before my homepage loads. Also for example, if I have 2 tabs open, with one playing a youtube video in the background and I'm browsing in the other, the video will stutter and I'll get the beach ball for a few moments when I try to go to another page. This happens no matter what browser I try (Firefox, Safari, Camino). And it never happens on my older MBP, it's a little annoying that a system that is 2 years older seems to perform better.
Any ideas or tips?

You might want to check that you have selected a startup disk as "Macintosh HD" so the OS x knows where to boot from. If there is no selection under startup items in System Preferences then boot up is delayed by a few seconds as OS X would look for a functional startup disk.
Check and see if this works for you in bringing down boot times.
PS> Also check what login items you have in the lisr under Account.

  • Brand new Macbook Pro slower than my 2006 Macbook

I bought a new Macbook Pro last month and upgraded the RAM to 4 GB and the hard drive to 500 GB. My previous Mac was a mid-2006 Macbook with 2 GB RAM.
I was expecting it to be noticeably faster than my 2006 Macbook (which is still running Tiger/10.4), but it isn't. Two things are particularly noticeable.
    1) Startup time. The 2006 Macbook is 5 or 10 seconds faster starting up.
    2) Safari. Safari is a couple of seconds faster loading identical websites on the 2006 Macbook. I tried updating Safari on the Macbook Pro to the new Safari 4 beta, and that is slightly faster, but still noticeably slower than on my Macbook.
I've tried running the set of Applescripts called "Maintenance" (available on the web) to do all regular maintenance tasks.
I've run software update. Everything is up to date.
Any suggestions of other things I should be checking to try to improve the speed of my Macbook Pro are much appreciated.
I find it really mystifying that performance is so noticeably worse on a brand new, much more powerful machine.
    Thanks

    Thanks for the replies.
In re the OS, I personally don't see many significant improvements in OS 10.5. Sure, little things here and there, but major power improvements over 10.4 that should cause startup time to be slower? I don't see it. I'm surprised in the design phase Apple's software engineers would allow longer startup time (always one of their biggest selling point over the Windows world) in return for such things as being able to hit the space bar in the finder to open a document quickly. I'm not using Time Machine, for instance, so that shouldn't be slowing down startup... or at least actually loading it in functioning mode shouldn't be slowing things down.
In re Safari, I'm doing as scientific a test as I possibly can here at home. Both computers sitting right next to each other, connected to the same network wirelessly, clicking on the same web link at exactly the same time. My 2006 Macbook is consistently faster at loading the page. Even more, it is significantly faster at loading the page to a "usable" point. For instance, if I click on the main page of the New York Times, the 2006 Macbook will load faster and will let me scroll down much earlier in the load process. On the 2009 MBP, the page shows up a few seconds slower, and it takes another few seconds more before the spinning beach ball stops and I can scroll down on the page. This is true both with Safari 3 and 4 on the MBP.
I just find it weird that a much more powerful computer, with a "new, improved" operating system and twice the amount of RAM, is noticeably more sluggish on these really basic tasks.
My next step is to go to the Apple store and try to compare mine to some other MBPs...
I have issues with some developments at Apple recently. For instance, the gen 2 iPod shuffle strikes me as a perfect design. Does it need to be smaller? Moving the controls to the headset seems really weird to me, much less convenient than the old one. I know that comment is OT, I just am starting to wonder about some decisions at Apple.
Not enough to make me complain seriously... I still vastly prefer Apple to the other options. But that sense I had for years that somebody really smart is paying attention to all these details and getting them right... that's starting to fade away for me. On the other hand, I do not have an iPhone and I think it's clear a lot of Apple's resources are going into the iPhone these days.

  • How do I compare the speed of my new MacBook Pro to my old one?

I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro (2.6 Ghz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1600 Mhz DDR3) and gave my old one to my daughter. I used Time Machine to basically produce an exact copy of the old machine; however, in the six weeks I've been using it, I don't seem to see any improvements in speed eg programmes which took several seconds to open still take several seconds to open (I know - learn to be a bit more patient!).
Is there a simple way of comparing two machines? Are there any ways the general public can "benchmark" different computers to allow a direct comparison?

You might have gotten a newer machine, which is surely faster performing on the hardware side if you run GeekBench, XBench and other tests for CPU, Graphics and UI responses.
However some hardware speeds haven't changed too much, like hard drives which Apple places pokey 5,400 RPM drives in their laptop because it's more stable and takes less power.
Apple likes to add features to OS X to sell more hardware, this "bloat" tends to eat away at the hardware performance you do get when you buy a new machine.
Apple very well can make the UI feel more snappy, however they put speed limits in as they want people to be able to recognize something is happening.
Another factor is you restored from TimeMachine, which doesn't really optimize the hard drive when it restores back.
Another factor is a lot of hard drives come from the factor with bad sectors, which takes time for the drive to discover and map off, this affects read performance.
Another factor is perhaps you bought a 13" MBP, with no dedicated graphics card, so it's running on the Intel CPU 4000 graphics which is greatly inferior to the higher end 15" dedicated graphics.
Another factor is when you restored from TimeMachine your personal data pushed past the 50% mark on your boot hard drive, these sectors and tracks on the hard drive are shorter and further inwards thus it takes longer for the read heads to get data from them.
I don't have to recommned any program for you to test your new hardware against the old one, I know your new machine is probablly faster.
What I suspect has occured is your machine either doesn't have a dedicated video card (a 13", cant' help about that)
or that your running 10.7 (you CAN upgrade to 10.8 which reports are it's a bit snappier)
Does your Mac qualify for free 10.8 upgrade?
I suspect you dont't have a SSD or else you wouldn't be complaining, so that leaves a boot hard drive over 50% filled and/or a deoptimized TimeMachine restore.
What you can do is get a blank, powered external drive and a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner
1: Reduce the content of your boot drive user data so Acitivty Monitor > Disk Usage is below 50% (never more than 80% filled) reboot to see the changes.
2: Use CCC to clone the Macintosh HD partition to the external drive, hold the option key down while booting and boot off the clone drive.
3: Use Disk Utility (on the clone) to select your Macintosh HD partiton on the internal drive, use the Erase > Secure Erase middle selection and wait, this will "zero" the drive and ehen it checks, will map off any bad or failing sectors.
4: When that's completed (takes a few hours) then use CCC to clone the clone back onto the Macintosh HD partition.
5: Reboot and Disk Utility > Repair permissions on both drives, use OnyX from MacUpdate.com to run all the maintainence and cleaning aspects and reboot.
For the OnyX routine, see #12 here: Step by Step to fix your Mac
What you should wind up with is a as snappy machine as possible, your Applications will be written to the "hot band" which is the fastest portion of the hard drive, hopefully any bad sectors which take longer to read from will be eliminated.
If you want to make hardware changes, I recommned getting a Solid State Drive for faster speed, however they can't be securely erased and Filevault has been cracked so that's no protection.

FYI I have a pokey 5,400 RPM drive, butI used the optimization techniques above and it's dam well snappy. I also run 10.6.8 on a Early 2011, which is the last machines that can run 10.6., so because the OS is less bloated I get more UI response.
Other factos I have, I have a 25 Mb/p download Internet speed and a 5Ghz WPA2(AES) ruoter with no leachers or other users. I use Firefox with the broadband tweaks which is even faster than Safari which is the fasest browser on Macs. My web pages lad in about 1-2 seconds onaverage.

  • New MacBook Pro slower than a snail

I have just upgraded to a new MacBook, and am having speed issues, first with Mountain Lion and now with Mavericks. It seems as though almost all operations, even selecting a file in the Finder, bring up the beach ball of death, and opening applications like Keynote or Pages can take 30 or more seconds. I am not here to knock Apple, although as a 20+ year user I am disappointed since this is the first time I have ever encountered anything lke this, but I am lost as to where to begin to correct this. syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • New hard drive slower than old one

Hello, my Seagate 120GB 5400rpm drive crashed 6 weeks ago and I made use of the warranty to get a replacement (refurbished) drive. I think this drive is no good because I have noticed a marked decrease in performance:
-Upon coming back from sleep mode the screen turns on but it pinwheels for several seconds, showing the time it was when I put it to sleep.
-My battery also lasts considerably less now. The battery is about a year old and had been lasting me up to two hours. It now doesn't last much more than one.
-I also tried to rip a dvd today and had to stop because it was going 5x slower than it had even on this drive when I first got it.
Is there anything else that could be causing me this decreased performance besides a subpar drive?
I have been in touch with Seagate again this weekend and they suggested I send it in for another replacement, which is fine, but is there a way I can copy all of this drive onto my replacement when it gets here? Or should I need to start fresh and reinstall everything on the new one?
    Thanks.

  • How do i transfer all of my files, mail, data to my new macbook pro from the old one?

I'm about to finally upgrade and buy a MacBook Pro retinal display.  Upgrading from a MacBook built in 2006 (running Lion & the best speed/memory it can do).  How do I transfer everything from the old to new?

When you turn on a new Mac, it will offer to transfer everything for you, using the Migration Assistant. You simply connect your two Macs using FireWire, Thunderbolt, Ethernet, or wireless and follow the steps.

  • I am trying to import songs to my new macbook pro from my old computer using home sharing. Both computers say that home sharing is now on but neither show up in each other's library menu. I am logged on with the same apple id for both computers.

I am trying to import songs to my new macbook pro from my old computer using home sharing. Both computers say that home sharing is now on but neither show up in each other's library menu. I am logged on with the same apple id for both computers. and both are on a stable wireless connection

Logging into itunes store on each machine wth different Apple IDs is OK Autorising each others machines with the other Apple ID is OK. This is completley separate from Home Sharing
For Home Sharing to work you need to
File > Home Sharing > Create Home Share.
You need to select one of the two Apple IDs you are using and ENTER THIS ON BOTH MACHINES WHEN CREATING THE HOME SHARE.
    Home sharing will then work

iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - just media purchased from iTunes Store
i-devices are intended to by synced with iTunes (iTunes --> device), not transfer things to iTunes.  For transferring songs from i-device to computer see commercial software utilities (with the exception of iTunes purchases). Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

  • I synced my new macbook pro to my old iMac

I synced my new macbook pro to my old iMac(which is old, and doesn't have a lot of memory left) and thus I keep getting the error message on my (new) macbook that the startup disk is almost full, even though I haven't anything on it. so should I restore it? there's nothing i need to save anyway. the macbook is OSX 10.8.

I have no idea what Synced my Macbook to my old iMac means.
Does it mean you copied the contents of the iMac hard drive to the Macbook Pro? You then say you have nothing on your hard drive yet you are getting messages that the startup disk is full.  Something is not making sense here.
You need to provide much more information before anyone else can help you.

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • Brand new macbook pro slows down after I transfer files on from old computer

Hey, I just purchased a brand new Macbook Pro 3.5 GhZ Haswell processor, 500 gb of flash memory, 16 gb of RAM, OS X Mavericks, 17" retina display and while it's been great upon first booting up after I transferred over my music and books and docs from my old mac (about 150 gb worth (so I still have over 300 gb free on the new one)) I've seen a massive slow down and it's started giving me the beach ball of death which was the main reason I got a new macbook as my old one was beach balling so much it was nearly unusable. Very upset that this brand new stupidly expensive computer is already doing this. Any advice is apppreciated.

Either your RAM is no good, of poor quality, the wrong specs or it's not installed correctly or it got subjected to static electricity when you put it in.
Best Buy isn't as Mac centric, thus the quality of RAM that Mac's require may not be there.
You should have purchased from Crucial.com or Other World Computing or similar that tests the RAM to make sure it works the first time you put it in, as it costs everyone money to ship bad RAM back and forth.
I put in 16GB a couple of days ago, took five minutes and it works perfectly.
Nothing like top tier RAM for a top of the line machine, especially with all those tiny, easy to lose screws Apple uses.

  • New MacBook Pro slower wifi than iBookG4

My new MacBook Pro tests at a slower download speed than my iBook G4 1.42 GHz.
I am running a wireless network using a Belkin router (b&g enabled) on a cable network connection (20Mb/2Mb).
When connected via ethernet, the MacBook Pro gets 20,000 kbps download. When connected via wifi, it gets 7-10,000 kbps. (DNS servers are identified and listed in the network control panel.)
The iBook gets 15,000-20,000 kbps via wifi. The iBook is running 10.4.11.
Is this a function of the MacBook Pro or Leopard?
(speeds measured with repeated tests at speakeasy.net).

You can definitely thank Leopard for that.

  • Printing wirelessly with a brand new MacBook Pro and an old G4 Titanium

I have a brand new MacBook Pro set up to print wirelessly and it is working wonderfully.
The problem is my other laptop that is on 10.3.9 is not finding the printer at all. I have all the drivers needed but can not figure out what else I need to do to make this happen. I thought it might be an issue of one computer using Bonjour and one using rendezvous. Is there a way I can have both operating systems talk to the same printer on my AE network?
    Please help!
    Brian

Make sure you have "authorized your New MAC" to do this if you haven't in iTunes click on "Store" then "Authorize this computer"
If thats good then there are a couple of options, First would be, Connect your iPod, Cancel the Sync when it appears. Click on "File" then "Transfer purchase from iPod"
Option 2 would be create a backup of your iTunes library on your old computer, may take a couple of CD's to do so, all depends on the size of your library. Then simply restore it on the MAC.
Option 3 (My preferred option) if your old computer is on the same network, turn on Home Sharing on both the Old and New iTunes and simply drag the music you want right on over.
Very important though that the new itunes be authorized first for any of those to work.
    Hope this helps.

  • Moving my Iphone to a new MacBook Pro from an old MacBook Pro

My husband just bought me a new MacBook Pro. I currently sync my Iphone to an older model MacBook Pro. How do I go about moving my Iphone to the new computer? I was going to take my 2 computers (the new one and the old one) into Apple so they could do the data migration. Is that something that they do when they move over Itunes along with my other things, or is it something I could do ahead of time?
    Thanks-

You can use migration assistant to move everything over yourself.
