New MacBook Pro Time Capsule Backup Restore Some Folders Only

Hi
I am getting a new MacBook Pro. I have the latest Time Capsule and have fully backup my old MBP.
I am doing a fresh install of all my apps.
MY ?: Can I just restore some specific folders after I get my new MPB, or is the backup from the older MPB specific to that MPB
Can I just restore ONLY MY DOCUMENTS from the older back up to my new MBP.
Somewhere down the line, someone told me it cannot. Backups are only restorable to the machine that made it.
Thank you

You can use that backup with the computer you want, always that the other Mac uses the same or a newer OS X than the other Mac.
During the first start of the new Mac, it will ask you to restore a backup, so select that option and follow the steps. It will ask you for what you want to restore from the backup, so you can select the folders, settings... you want to restore to the new Mac

  • Wipe new Macbook Pro - Time Machine Backup Issue

    Hi,
I recently purchased a 15" Macbook Pro, i'd previously been using a Mac Pro - through which everything was backed up through Time Machine onto a external HD.
When i started using the Macbook Pro i by-passed the initial Migration request as i had'nt yet got the 6 pin to 4 pin firewire cable for my external HD (have one now).
When i tried routing timeline on the MBP to the Time Machine backup on my external HD it ended up creating a separate user account on my MBP. This isn't what i wanted - i thought i could pick up where the Mac Pro left off but have'nt been able to figure out how. It's also slowed the MBP down alot, so i want to wipe it and start afresh - hopefully figuring out the Time Machine issue in the process.
    Thanks,

    You can by doing this:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
When the system restarts you will be in the Setup Assistant from which you can initiate a migration from a Time Machine backup. In this way you will not end up with multiple user accounts.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.

  • Can't backup new macbook to time capsule

I bought a new macbook pro and when connected to time capsule/time machine, it doesn't rotate out the oldest backups (which are from my older macbook pro that I want to keep using and keep backing it up too!).   So, with my new Macbook Pro, it tells me I'm out of space?
Can I backup more than one macbook pro to the capsule? This answer has to be YES.
How do I change the settings to direct the time capsule to rotate out the oldest backups?

The new macpro cannot use the old backup.
I suggest you archive the old backup to a USB drive and then erase the TC and start over. Otherwise it will not have enough space.

  • Syncing to new MacBook Pro after sync/backup to Dell Windows XP?

    Hi,
Back in November I bought an iTouch 4G 32GB. Love it. Awesome device. But at the time all my Macs ran OS X 10.4 and I wanted to back up the data and apps on my iTouch so I used an old Dell to do that. The version of iTunes I needed to do that did not run on OS X 10.4....but did run on XP, humm?
Anyway, last week I bought a new 17" MacBook Pro and now I want to use that as the primary computer I use with my iTouch. But I can't see how to do that without wiping my iTouch clean!!!
I can reload my iTune music collection, but I don't want to lose all my apps and data files I now have on my iTouch! How do I copy/backup/sync the apps FROM my iTouch TO iTunes on my new MacBook Pro with losing everything???
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Well, the apps copied from the iTouch to the MacBook Pro. BUT….
    1. Both sides (MacBook & iTouch) of the apps window in iTunes is "transparent" and nothing can be selected on either side. It looks like I now have to "sync" the two to copy the apps back to the iTouch (or to make sure they are there and the two sides match)? This scares the heck out of me, because it says "Are you are sure you want to sync all apps? All existing apps and their data on the iPod "Jeffs iPod" will be replaced with the apps from this iTunes library"…….which I think is Ok to do now, but it still makes me nervous, not doing this everyday…
    2. I do see if I click "Apps" under Library in iTunes I can select/manage the apps….but it says there are only 167. My iTouch says I have 218 apps (and 17 videos, and 61 photos, 1834 songs). Why the difference in the number of apps?? And will they be organized the same way I have them now on my iTouch? I think so, but…
(…."Hence the information about redownloading apps." ….I am trying to avoid re-downloading (and re-organizing) a bunch of my apps, had to do some of this when I updated to iOS 4.3 and for some reason iTunes on the Dell did not copy all the apps to the Dell before updating the iOS. and then telling me there was a problem and the only way to use my iTouch again was to Restore it!! That included about 3 hours to to reload my music BTW)
    3. I never used iPhoto, but I now have a bunch of pictures and videos on my iTouch (including a bunch from the Toronto Supercross I attended Saturday) that I don't want to lose! The LAST thing I want to do to my iTouch photos is sync them right now! I can't even see how to copy the pics in my iTouch to my MacBook! So what so I do there?
Is there a way to copy the pictures and videos on the iTouch to the MacBook before trying to do a sync, a risk wiping them out? At least I'd have copies of them if the pics and vids got wiped on the iTouch.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

  • New MacBook Pro Time Machine Data

    Hi guys,
I just got a new MacBook Pro and I want to transfer stuff from my old MBP, but not all of it. I only want to transfer over my emails (Mac Mail), documents, photos and music. Nothing else. No applications or anything. Is there any specific way of doing that? Can't really find a way. Thanks for your help!

two options,  hard drive or migration assistant
    Migration Assistant
After your Mac is up and running, with at least one user account, you can use the similar Migration Assistant app to transfer those same categories, with the same restrictions.  This is mainly used to move an account from one Mac (or it’s backups) to another Mac that’s already set up.  (Accounts transferred this way may have problems, especially permissions problems with files already on other drives, including backups.)
If you have any user accounts on the new Mac with the same name as any you want from the old Mac, there's a conflict.  See the pink box in the Using Migration Assistant page below.
Note that user accounts transferred via Migration Assistant may lose permission to see and restore from files on other volumes, including backups.
But if you're already got data you need to keep in any of those other accounts, see Transferring files from one User Account to another.

    Hi all,
Trouble Trouble Trouble - my frustrations with Apple:
    1) MacBook Pro -bought 19th nov 2009- Death On Arrival, 4HDD/11/40000004:SATA(0,0)
Been sent back to Apple and I got a new one.
New MacBook Pro -got it on the 25th nov 2009- Started to have random Kernel Panic's 2nd of November:
    2) Kernel Panic's everywhere.. even on the Mac Bootdisc with Disk Utility.. as random as they appeared, so random they went away. Just to be sure on the Apple helpdesk they advised me to cleaned disk and reinstalled everything. Lucky I made a back-up when it was still working.... otherwise I'd have lost everything.
    3) Worked well for 2 or 3 days and now -6th dec 09- all the sudden it doesn't want to start anymore. Giving me 9 beeps at start-up on a black screen in the morse code s.o.s. 3x short, 3x long, 3x short)
    Apple?
I'm sure when I call Apple tomorrow I'll have to bring away my notebook to an Apple Service Provider cause they can't help me on the phone. If so, I will have to wait for another 20 days(experience in the past with my bro's MacBook for a new harddisk(!)).
I used to be a PC-guy and took the brave step to be a full-time Apple-guy, but this is just frustrating me. Sold my old laptop and now I'm without one for ages.
What would my options be? Could I get a complete new notebook?

    Sounds like bad RAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2341?viewlocale=en_US
    Or bad power.
Have you attempted to change the power supply or power source? If it isn't plugged into a surge protector, you may have issues with your house power that create problems for multiple computers.
Also, be sure you aren't damaging the power cable unintentially*:

This is a user to user board.
    Call Apple directly at:
    (31) 0900 7777 703
And let them know your repeated issues. They could give you a replacement machine, but also ask for a replacement power brick to at least test the theory the power brick may be damaged.

  • New unibody macbook pro time machine backup stalling/stalls

I have been using time machine to back up my Macbook Pro 17 (First Gen), I have 2 external Western Digital Drives connected via USB in a RAID (Striped) Configuration. Everything has worked fine for months and the backups are quite snappy...
I just changed to a NEW Unibody Macbook Pro 17 and formatted the drives, set up the RAID configuration again from fresh in disk utility and reset Time Machine and said OK when it requested to use the drive for backups.
The process gets some way into backing up... sometimes 7GB, 13GB, 17GB even 70GB and then just stops. The hard drives(at least one of them anyway i cant tell exactly) spin down and the file count in Time Machine window just stops. There is no error message and the window just stays there saying its backing up but there is no external HD activity. I have to cancel the backup (which sometimes - but not always - causes everything to stall until i unplug the drives by whipping the USB cable out). Everything then works fine i dont need to restart and it just brings up an error message saying that Time Machine failed to backup...
    Any ideas??
I do have antivirus software installed (VirusScan) but i have had that on my previous machine aswell so it cant be that...

I have a MacBook C2Duo (black 2008) customer who has upgraded to 10.5.7 with a new internal and external hard disk and a fresh install of the OS. After doing this, Time Machine constantly stalled at 12.55 GB when backing up to an external disk (USB2). After a lot of reading on the net, I think the problem marks the re-emergence of an old bug where the mdworker task used by Spotlight to index drives is crashing and starting to take up to 99% of the CPUs. At this point, TM simply does not have enough CPU time to work and crawls almost to a halt.
I messed around for a while with Activity Monitor watching the mdworker crash and it is very predictable. Time Machine buddy does not pick it up because of course TM is still working albeit at a snail's pace.
Since mdworker is very associated with Spotlight, I tried setting Spotlight to not index any folders—same problem.
Finally, I set the TM destination drive to be a Private drive in the Spotlight Preferences and it finished without an mdworker crash.
It might be a temporary workaround or it might be coincidence that TM worked this time, so YMMV and Apple should look at this too.

  • How to manage a MacBook Pro + Time Capsule + Apple TV combo?

Hi, everyone. I'm a new user to Mac techonology and I have a few doubts I'd like to clear before I acquire some new stuff and avoid a useless expense.
I just bought a 500 GB 15" MacBook Pro, and I've always used several external USB hard drives for backup (one HDD) and releasing space from my computer (two HDD). So you can imagine how much I have to juggle with since I'm an avid iTunes store customer for TV shows, movies and music, on a weekly basis. So, you can imagine also a 500GB internal HDD will fill up eventually with all the rest of the data I have.
I'm thinking about buying a 2TB Time Capsule to get rid of all the cables, countless copy/drags/syncs, and reduce the number of external HDD's. And I just got a new Apple TV as a birthday gift (don't have it yet with me) so I can enjoy all my media in the living room.
So, would Time Capsule be the best option? To backup my MacBook AND use it as a data storage external HDD for files that fill up the MacBook (movies and tv episodes)? Also, can both options be accessed remotely for sharing purposes and for Apple TV playing?
I hope I'm making myself clear enough. Does anyone have an accurate idea if what I'm trying to go for is possible? I'd hate to spend 500 bucks on a Time Capsule and not defeat my current "management" of data.
    Please help.
    Best regards,
    Martin V.F.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.

You don't want to mix Time Machine backups and other types of files on the Time Capsule disk. By design Time Machine will eventually fill up the Time Capsule disk, making it hard to manage your other files. Instead, connect a USB disk drive to the Time Capsule and put those other files there. Size the Time Capsule disk strictly for Time Machine backups. Since Time Machine won't back up the files on that external Time Capsule drive, you'll have to arrange for that some other way.
Also, can both options be accessed remotely for sharing purposes and for Apple TV playing?
If you want to share the Time Machine backups, why?? If iTunes can find the files on the Time Capsule external drive, then the AppleTV should be able to access them.

  • Cant log in to Macbook after Time Capsule Full Restore

    Hi,
I upgraded to Yosemite the other day and after doing so, I realized it locked me out of aperture, vmware fusion, and a few other programs which evidentially needed to be upgraded. I had a recent backup(pre-Yosemite) on my Time Capsule so I just chose to do a full restore from that backup. Everything went fine until it was time to log in to my profile. None of the passwords work. I even tried to reset the password with the master to no avail. It keeps popping up this error message; "You are unable to log in to the user account -insert name- at this time. Logging in to this account failed because an error occurred."
So I chatted with apple support. They came up with the solution through the recovery mode to reset the password via the command line. I went through the process and the system said it was successful. Still to no avail. Same error message.
I have a call with Apple support scheduled, but I'm impatient.
    Any ideas?

Does it matter that the old OS(circa 2008) is pre-maverick? The time capsule file is certainly maverick. Also, does it matter that I was running file vault on the profile previously?
The old OS won't matter in terms of disk utility.. but it might affect the result for changing the admin user password.
File Vault though is a total pain.
I actually stay well away from using file vault because there is no way you can fix it.
Mess up that password and you are dead dead dead.
I recommend you have another go restore to a USB drive.. and then see if you can access it..
If you had have asked me a few days before you installed Yosemite I would have said.. DO NOT TRUST TM.
Create a bootable clone of your computer using CCC.
TM is now so buggy and so difficult to use it cannot be relied on for more than an occasional deleted file.. it is great when it works.. but trusting your files to it as a backup .. no way.

  • New MacBook Pro User wanting to move iTunes Music Only over from PC

    Hi All,
This weekend I purchased my first MacBook Pro and loving every minute of it... Makes me wonder why I hadn't moved to Mac's a long time aago, and really seeing the difference between Windows and its slugishness to Mac and its "PERFORMANCE"!
However, with that asside what I am trying to find out is how do I move my purhcased only iTunes files from my PC to my MacBook Pro?
For example, I have some iTunes purchases like Celine Dion's last CD with digital artwork album and stuff in my iTunes on my PC. But because my iTunes library is so old it also has some songs which are in MP3 format from my earlier Creative Labs Zen device. What I want to really do is move those iTunes only purchases with artwork and movies from my PC to my MacBook to enjoy (which include movies as well).
Can anyone advise how this can be done without replacing my entire iTunes folder on the MacBook? I really don't want to have to purchase all of these songs again, but again would like to keep the artwork and movies all attached as they should be on the Mac world.
Basically I'm trying to keep the MacBook as the master owner of my digital iTunes purchases from here on out!
While I know I might be a little "AR" (the last word is retentive, you can figure out what the A stands for)... This would be my ultimate goal...
I've seen some articles on how to do this with iTunes 7, but again know some things have changed and modified with the 8 versions.
    Thanks in advance

Take a look here; it should help:
iTunes for Mac: How to copy purchases between authorized computers
Though it refers to items purchased from the iTunes Store, it applies to all your iTunes content. And if you happen to also own an iPod:
How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
Once you have the tracks on some removable medium, you can mount that on your new computer and then just drag the content to the iTunes window. Make sure that the option to "copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" is set in the iTunes -> Advanced -> General preferences before you do. Alternatively, you can use the Add To Library command and select each track (or folder of tracks).
If you won't be using that Windows system once you move the content, don't forget to deauthorize the system from your iTunes Store account before you dispose of the computer.
    Regards.

  • Time Capsule backup failed, volume read-only, can't delete

I've only been using Time Machine and Time Capsule for 2 months. This week it stopped working. First error message:
"Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume."
Checking the Time Machine preferences, "Last backup" would read "backup failed"
When I got this error, all the wireless functions went offline, even thought the TC light was still green.
I would shut down, shut down the Time Capsule, shut off my modem reboot everything in order.
I would come back online, but after about 20 minutes to 1.5 hours into the next backup, same thing would happen again.
    Next error message:
"Disk repair. The disk 'Backup of [my computer]' was not repairable by this computer. It is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must backup your data and reformat the drive."
Then: "Time Machine Error: The backup volume is read only. To select a different volume ... Time Machine preferences ... "
I spoke to someone at Apple, who sent me the Time Machine Troubleshooting page:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3275?viewlocale=en_US
    Steps I went through:
    1. updated my system software
    2. updated the TC firmware to 7.4.1
    3. dragged the sparsebundle to DiskUtility. It took a while (more than an hour?) but said the disk could not be repaired. When I tried again, the repair function wouldn't run.
    4. tried to delete the sparsebundle, but it would choke at almost the end, sometimes it would just crash the finder, sometimes say "Sorry, an unexpected error occurred," sometimes "Operation cannot be completed because the item 'bands' is in use." I even tried to Stuff the bundle with 'delete original' checked, but the stuffing, after about 15 hours, jammed near the end (stuffed 20 gigs of 35 gigs).
    5. tried to reselect the TC, and run backup anyways ... now it can't find the volume, back to the error messages and crashing Finder
    6. checked password in Keychain, all ok.
    Now what??
Do I use Airport Utility to erase it? At least TC is still showing up there. Or press the rest button on the back of the Time Capsule to reset to factory defaults?
I've resigned myself to losing my backups. Now I would just like to get it up and running again.
    In hopes,
    Linda

Yes, open Airport Utility and erase the drive. Once the sparsebundle is corrupted beyond repair there's little more you can do. However, do not reset the TC. Doing so will not erase the drive, but it will remove any custom configurations you may have setup for the router. Only if that part of the TC is also misbehaving should you use the reset button.

  • MacBook Pro + Time Capsule = Slow Hard Disk Access..

    Hi,
I know it's an issue with my MBP as my imac is fine with my TC
Basically connections fail, are sometimes not possible and accessing D/L and Up/L files is so slow I can't even watch a movie from my TC..
It's only a problem with my MBP though, my other computer is fine..
I know I could do a re-install of OSX Lion but.. that's a major chore for me..
I have degraged my comp, used Onyx, I have no viruses and everything is fully updated..
    Any suggestions?

Thanks for relating your experience.. I have been telling people for a while to do clean install to fix Lion issues with TC.. makes me so pleased to be still on SL.
