New MacBook Pro User (to be)

Hi,im a Windows XP user and im a few weeks away from buying my first MacBook Pro.After the bulsh*t Microsoft pulled with Vista, I've decided to jump ship to Apple.
I currently use a desktop running XP but the time has come to downsize to a machine that quite frankly, from what I've read, puts Windows to shame.(Esp regarding some of the apps that will be useful to me)
I'm a complete rookie with OSX, so forgive me if some of my future questions sound ignorent.Im a quick learner!
My first real concern is the integrity of the wireless security with a MacBook Pro.I'm on the net a lot, and I was wondering if there was anything worth me downloading and burning to a cd, before I connected to the net for the first time on the Mac.Or does it come with its own - Antivirus,Firewall,Spyware Remover etc, etc.
Thanks for your time and help.

The above post is correct, there's very little risk as few viruses are aimed at Mac's. Did the same thing myself and switched in February after twenty some years of windows - should have done it years ago. Use mine for business as well so my helpful IT department insist on it having virus protection so run the McAfee VirusScan for Mac which keep them happy and out of my way.

  • I am a new Macbook Pro user (just the 13" baby).  I have an external DVD drive and would like to load onto my Mac and then onto my iPad - how do I do this?

I am a new MacBook Pro user - actually totally new to the Mac goodies and am having a bit of trouble sorting out how to get a DVD from my external DVD player onto the Mac and then onto my iPad (I travel a lot!).  I have been a windows user for many years and am still trying to learn all the bits and pieces.  I have VLC on this - don't have any trouble playing a DvD, just don't know how to do the rest i.e. rip it, change to an MP4 and get it onto my other device.  Please help!  You are more than likely to see many more "how do I do this" on here!

program called MDRP to rip it......  then use Wondershare to convert it, also Iskysoft video converter is an option.
You dont have to put it ON the Ipad, once on the Mac, you can Stream it wifi to the Ipad using the $2 program called VLC STREAMER (not VLC, but streamer made by VLC),.... best APP for your Ipad to stream videos from your MAC to your Ipad.

  • New MacBook Pro - user name and password question

Okay, I am fired up. I just opened my brand new MacBook Pro 15.4". I purchased it from MacMall and had them install Parallels (I use one program that is Windows only) and Office:mac 2008 Special Media Edition.
Since MacMall installed Office and Parallels (and then Windows XP Pro) they initially set up the user name and password for my MacBook Pro. The user name is simply "user" and there is no password. How can I go back and reset the user name and password at the system level?
BTW, this is my first Mac in 15 years! My firm uses all Windows based machines . . . except me now!

It is possible to either change the account's name, or create a new account. The first (changing the username), does NOT fully change the name. A version of your name (called the short name) remains unchanged.
Therefore, I recommend creating a NEW account. The procedure...
    1) In the Apple menu, select "System Preferences".
    2) Click "Accounts"
    3) If locked, click the lock (lower-left corner) and login (guarantees you are the authorized person).
    4) Click "+" to create a new account.
    5) Assuming you want to be the administrator of your computer, setup the NEW ACCOUNT as "Administrator".
    6) Enter your desired username.
    7) Enter your desired shortname (can be the same, but no spaces and all lowercase).
    8) Enter your desired password.
    9) Click "Create Account".
However, the computer is still configured to automatically login the user "user" at startup. You can change this at the "Accounts" pane of "System Preferences" as well. Proceed...
    10) Click "Login Option"
    11) Change AUTOMATIC LOGIN to either "Disabled" or your new username (your choice).

  • New MacBook Pro user trying to install Firefox

I just got my new MacBook Pro (I'm really a PC user) and I am trying to install Firefox. I download it, get the install file (.dmg) that automatically unloads onto my desktop. I then get a disk drive icon labeled Firefox that only gives me the option to Eject. How do I install Firefox?
    Any help is appreciated.

Double click the disk drive icon, inside you will find the installer .pkg
.dmg is a disk image file it opens as a disk and mounts on your desktop.

  • Bootcamp or parallels for new macbook pro user

I am about to make the switch from pc and purchase one of the new macbook pros that came out today. I don't fully understand how bootcamp and parallels work yet and which would be better for my needs.
I am an architect and will need to run windows for 3d modeling and rendering occasionally. Most likely I will have to use XP pro since Vista isn't yet supported in my work environment. Although I am used to pc operating systems, I think most of the rest of my work could be done using a mac os. Ideally, I would be able to use both simultaneously, but I have heard that parallels is slow.
any thoughts would be much appreciated.

    Hi,
personally I don't use Fusion but Parallels.
Both claim that they can use an existing BootCamp Windows partition for creating their Virtual Machines.
However there are a lot of postings that this worked for one and that this has destroyed the BootCamp Windows for others.
For myself I have a BootCamp Windows XP and Parallels with an old Windows 2000 I had lying around.
If you let Fusion use your BootCamp Windows for creating its VM, then there should be no need to reinstall the Windows programs, although it could happen that you have the reenter serial numbers for these programs.
A reformat is not neccessary since Fusion puts the Virtual machine (which in fact consists of 2-3 files) on your OSX partition.
Given the fact that you most certainly need a BootCamp Windows in order to run your architecture programs, I would propose to this first.

  • New MacBook Pro User -How to set up Dictation Function

Hello. I have just purchased my first MacBook Pro. After many years using a Windows PC, I have finally jumped over to the Mac side. Please bear with me as I am a new user and I am in the process of slowly setting up and learning this new MacBook. I have upgraded the OS to Mac OS X Version 10.7.4 which I believe is Mountain Lion. Now, I am attempting to enable the Dictation function with no luck. When I click on System Preferences, I want to select 'Speech and Dictation' from within the System functions, however, all I see is a 'Speech' widget which shows a microphone icon. If I click on the 'Speech' icon, it opens into 'Speech Recognition' and  'Text to Speech'. There is no 'Dictation' function listed. It seems that no matter what I try, I can't get this to work. I tried using it with TextEdit but had no luck. I believe it is enabled by pressing the Fn key twice. I anyone can maybe walk me through this, I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Tony

I was able to download & install Mountain Lion and everything looks ok. I did run across one slight issue. It seems that with the Mountain Lion installation, the Dock is now sitting lower on the bottom of the screen. As a result, the blue active icon indicators do not show up on the screen. I haven't changed the screen resolution so I don't understand why this happened. Not a big deal, just an annoyance.
    Thanks again,
    Tony

  • New MacBook Pro user, my mail app is running unbelievably slow.

    Hi all,
This is my first post. I'm semi-new to the Mac-world, and I appreciate any detail that a new user might need.
I have a 15" MacBook Pro, 2.2GHz processor, with 4GB of RAM (upgrading to 8GB this week).
My mail takes several minutes to send - even with no attachments. Pure text, just the words "speed test" takes five or more minutes to send.
Any suggestions? Anything I can do? Does it have something to do with my outgoing mail port?
    Thanks.

    Have you contacted your ISP?

  • New MacBook Pro User wanting to move iTunes Music Only over from PC

    Hi All,
This weekend I purchased my first MacBook Pro and loving every minute of it... Makes me wonder why I hadn't moved to Mac's a long time aago, and really seeing the difference between Windows and its slugishness to Mac and its "PERFORMANCE"!
However, with that asside what I am trying to find out is how do I move my purhcased only iTunes files from my PC to my MacBook Pro?
For example, I have some iTunes purchases like Celine Dion's last CD with digital artwork album and stuff in my iTunes on my PC. But because my iTunes library is so old it also has some songs which are in MP3 format from my earlier Creative Labs Zen device. What I want to really do is move those iTunes only purchases with artwork and movies from my PC to my MacBook to enjoy (which include movies as well).
Can anyone advise how this can be done without replacing my entire iTunes folder on the MacBook? I really don't want to have to purchase all of these songs again, but again would like to keep the artwork and movies all attached as they should be on the Mac world.
Basically I'm trying to keep the MacBook as the master owner of my digital iTunes purchases from here on out!
While I know I might be a little "AR" (the last word is retentive, you can figure out what the A stands for)... This would be my ultimate goal...
I've seen some articles on how to do this with iTunes 7, but again know some things have changed and modified with the 8 versions.
    Thanks in advance

Take a look here; it should help:
iTunes for Mac: How to copy purchases between authorized computers
Though it refers to items purchased from the iTunes Store, it applies to all your iTunes content. And if you happen to also own an iPod:
How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
Once you have the tracks on some removable medium, you can mount that on your new computer and then just drag the content to the iTunes window. Make sure that the option to "copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" is set in the iTunes -> Advanced -> General preferences before you do. Alternatively, you can use the Add To Library command and select each track (or folder of tracks).
If you won't be using that Windows system once you move the content, don't forget to deauthorize the system from your iTunes Store account before you dispose of the computer.
    Regards.

    2. How do I take care of it to prolong life?
    4. What are the things that I should not do on my MBP or with my MBP?
To be honest you don't really need to. This is a great thing about Macs. You can use it without paying attention to this and it will still last longer than a Windows PC that you treated like a baby.
I use my computers (Windows and Mac) very heavily (12+ hours per day) for heavy use, and they are treated roughly. The Windows computers, under this treatment, used to last under a year (cast falling apart, mouse buttons fall off, screen comes loose etc) however my MacBook Pro for example is still in perfect condition after about 1 and a half years now.
    3. What apps do I need to install for a somewhat generic user like me?
iWork is good, it is like Microsoft Office and costs a lot less. It is also Office compatible. If you have Microsoft Office then it is probably not needed though.

  • New MacBook Pro user facing 'restrictions'?

I have a MacBook Pro OS X Version 10.6.5 and it is not allowing me to take screenshots, whenever I do a small box comes up on my screen and says 'Your screen shot can't be saved. You don't have permission to save files in the location where screen shots are stored.'
Another problem I'm having is that, when I try to put something in the Trash, a small box comes up saying, 'The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items.'
If it does allow me to delete an item, it says, 'Are you sure you want to delete "What Ever Item I'm Trying To Delete"? This item will be deleted immediately. You can't undo this action.'
    What do I do?

When you were in Disk Utility, did you click on the "Repair Disk Permissions" button, or one of the "Verify" buttons? The one you want to select is "Repair Disk Permissions."
It does sound as if your permissions are giving you problems. I've had a similar problem, and was never able to fix it.
You might try creating a new account and experimenting with it a bit - creating textedit documents, saving them, deleting them, then emptying trash, and taking and saving screenshots.
If you can do those things in your new account, it might be easier to transfer the files from your current account to the new one, then delete the old one.

  • New Macbook Pro User with questions

    Hello,
Since 2003 i have been posting questions pertaining to my beloved G5. the motherboard went on me so I go a macbook pro. So far its very nice and I will prolly be posting questions for years to come. Thankfully I backed up everything on Time Machine two days before the computer bit it. There are certain things I want on this computer and certain things I don't. Can I pick and choose which things I want? Also, how do I get my Safari bookmarks and my iChat settings (the names I have given all my buddies) on my new laptop? Thanks for your help!

I assume your backup is on an external drive that you can connect to your MBP. I would then use Migration Assistant as one option. It will allow you to restore from a TM backup on another computer or connected backup drive.
Be sure you are careful about what you move as your old computer was a PPC computer and not everything on it is compatible with Intel Macs. I would only transfer your personal files as well as your mail, address book, etc. You will also need the preference files for Mail, AB, iCal, etc. and they are located in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. AB, iCal, and iChat also have folders in /Home/Library/Applications Support/ that will need to be transferred. Avoid transferring any system files or applications that are PPC only. PPC-only apps should be reinstalled or upgraded to universal binaries.

  • Simple questions of a new macbook pro user

i have the 13 inch macbook pro 2011 .firstly what is the core function of the thunderbolt port.secondly i know how to calibrate my mac battery( which runs 3-4 hours maximum) in order to to increase battery efficiency but how do i do this long process in pakistan where there is atleast 12 hours of load shedding. this means charging battery with continuous breaks.thirdly why do i receive a small electric shock sometimes when my elbow slightly touches the laptop ......................and finally does the aluminium body of the macbook gets scratches and if it does are they removable

I will try to answer your questions:
    1. Go to system preference --> appearance --> then you will see an option to double click title bar to minimize.
    2. You can drag the window to maximize safari and it should "learn" this preference though I have a bookmark titled resize that I click on that maximizes my window. If you add a book mark and make the address this: javascript:self.moveTo(0,0);self.resizeTo(screen.availWidth,screen.availHeight) ;

  • New macbook pro user, need advice

So this is my very first macbook pro, it's a 2009 model 2.53GHz and 4GB RAM. I seem to be getting used to it the more I use it, however I did notice sometimes it heats up a bit which I understand is normal due to the loads it is doing. This brings me to my first question, I am thinking of purchasing somethings like a external cooling fan to help it out, is this a good idea and if so which would you recommend?
I know I also had another question, but even if my life depended on it right now I cannot remember, it will come to me eventually.

Double click the disk drive icon, inside you will find the installer .pkg
.dmg is a disk image file it opens as a disk and mounts on your desktop.
