New Macbook Pro User with questions

Hello,
Since 2003 i have been posting questions pertaining to my beloved G5. the motherboard went on me so I go a macbook pro. So far its very nice and I will prolly be posting questions for years to come. Thankfully I backed up everything on Time Machine two days before the computer bit it. There are certain things I want on this computer and certain things I don't. Can I pick and choose which things I want? Also, how do I get my Safari bookmarks and my iChat settings (the names I have given all my buddies) on my new laptop? Thanks for your help!

I assume your backup is on an external drive that you can connect to your MBP. I would then use Migration Assistant as one option. It will allow you to restore from a TM backup on another computer or connected backup drive.
Be sure you are careful about what you move as your old computer was a PPC computer and not everything on it is compatible with Intel Macs. I would only transfer your personal files as well as your mail, address book, etc. You will also need the preference files for Mail, AB, iCal, etc. and they are located in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. AB, iCal, and iChat also have folders in /Home/Library/Applications Support/ that will need to be transferred. Avoid transferring any system files or applications that are PPC only. PPC-only apps should be reinstalled or upgraded to universal binaries.

  • New Macbook Pro user with battery questions.

I just recently picked up a Macbook Pro and have been reading up on how to take care of the battery. I pretty much know everything I need to know to prolong it's life, but there's one question I can't find the answer to:
Once I plug it in to charge regardless of the % it's in (20%, 50%, 70%, etc), do I need to keep it plugged in until it's fully charged, or can I remove it at anytime? Say I don't have enough time to wait for it to fully charge and have to unplug it when it's only at 86%, will that damage the battery in any way?

See the Table in this link, the section Do I need to apply a full charge? answers your question. Your battery is Lithium ion.

  • I'm looking to buy a new Macbook Pro, and have questions about the Applecare extended warranty?

I'm looking to buy a new Macbook Pro, and have questions about the Applecare extended warranty? I want to know if the 3 year extended warranty covers what damage. Like water damage, accidental damage, lost or stolen macbook, manufactory defects, or any other kind of damage, maybe be even cosmetic damage. Can anyone help me?

If you are talking about features of the MBP itself, as long as you are not looking at  the Retina models, then the memory you can upgrade yourself for a lot less than Apple charges, and that does not affect the warranty as Apple considers memory a user permitted upgrade.  Great sources are Crucial and OWC, both are Mac specialists and have on-line videos on how to do the install.
If the 15" is what you are looking at, a good upgrade is the 7200 rpm hard drive, gives a little better performance over the standard 5400 rpm drive.
The Hi Res screen is good if you do a lot of graphics work.
Comparing the 13" amd 15" you will notice the 15" has a second, discrete graphic processor...helps when you get into heavy duty videos, games, graphics...but keep in mind that kicking in the second processor uses a lot of power and will run the battery down faster.
If you are looking at the Retina models, then keep in mind there are no post-purchase upgrade options...you have to buy with everything you want at the start.
    Just some thoughts.

I have a brand new macbook pro 15" with latest Lion. Can anyone tell me why, when I open word or preview etc that multiple files open? For eg if I open a word doc, the last 1-3 docs that I have worked previously on all open. Can anyone tell me why?

You have a choice as to whether or not applications in Lion like Word or Preview (or even Safari) save and re-open previous documents or windows... just hold down the option key while quitting a program and when you re-open it you won't get the previous documents or windows when you re-open the application. You can see this by selecting the open program in the menu bar and when holding down the option key the quit function will change to quit and discard open windows. This feature in Lion is referred to as "Resume" and is great if you want to restart an app and return to what you're doing (for example in Safari re-opening existing windows and tabs from your previous session). You still have the option to close individual windows within an app before quitting and they will not re-open when the app is launched again.
This Resume function is not related to saving your work (a word or text document for example). This is handled by Lion's "Auto-Save" and "Versions" functions. See http://www.apple.com/ca/macosx/whats-new/auto-save.html
Hopefully this is the complete answer you're looking for.

Against TOU which you "agreed" to in order to post in these user to user forums.  If you want to "suggest" something to Apple, do so in the Product Feedback area.

  • I am a new Macbook Pro user (just the 13" baby).  I have an external DVD drive and would like to load onto my Mac and then onto my iPad - how do I do this?

I am a new MacBook Pro user - actually totally new to the Mac goodies and am having a bit of trouble sorting out how to get a DVD from my external DVD player onto the Mac and then onto my iPad (I travel a lot!).  I have been a windows user for many years and am still trying to learn all the bits and pieces.  I have VLC on this - don't have any trouble playing a DvD, just don't know how to do the rest i.e. rip it, change to an MP4 and get it onto my other device.  Please help!  You are more than likely to see many more "how do I do this" on here!

program called MDRP to rip it......  then use Wondershare to convert it, also Iskysoft video converter is an option.
You dont have to put it ON the Ipad, once on the Mac, you can Stream it wifi to the Ipad using the $2 program called VLC STREAMER (not VLC, but streamer made by VLC),.... best APP for your Ipad to stream videos from your MAC to your Ipad.

What problems specifically? If you have a problem you should start your own thread and explain the problem in detail.
External USB devices including hard drives and DVD work fine on the new Macbook Pros.

Has it occurred to you that CS3 isn't compatible with Mavericks? Try using CS9 or 10.
Sorry that's untrue. I have Photoshop CS3 running on 10.9.
CS9 or 10? Now you are just making stuff up.
Adobe claim CS3 will work, with a minor issue…

The Adobe updater fails to work for me.
I was prompted to install J6RE which came from Apple, check the Apple support downloads http://support.apple.com/downloads/#java%206
Sorry can't provide a direct link, it was just a dumb 'You need … please click install' dialog.
I think the 10.9 java updater is installing version 7.

Provide the computer's firmware password. If you don't know what it is, contact the person you got the computer from or Apple.

  • New MacBook Pro - user name and password question

Okay, I am fired up. I just opened my brand new MacBook Pro 15.4". I purchased it from MacMall and had them install Parallels (I use one program that is Windows only) and Office:mac 2008 Special Media Edition.
Since MacMall installed Office and Parallels (and then Windows XP Pro) they initially set up the user name and password for my MacBook Pro. The user name is simply "user" and there is no password. How can I go back and reset the user name and password at the system level?
BTW, this is my first Mac in 15 years! My firm uses all Windows based machines . . . except me now!

It is possible to either change the account's name, or create a new account. The first (changing the username), does NOT fully change the name. A version of your name (called the short name) remains unchanged.
Therefore, I recommend creating a NEW account. The procedure...
    1) In the Apple menu, select "System Preferences".
    2) Click "Accounts"
    3) If locked, click the lock (lower-left corner) and login (guarantees you are the authorized person).
    4) Click "+" to create a new account.
    5) Assuming you want to be the administrator of your computer, setup the NEW ACCOUNT as "Administrator".
    6) Enter your desired username.
    7) Enter your desired shortname (can be the same, but no spaces and all lowercase).
    8) Enter your desired password.
    9) Click "Create Account".
However, the computer is still configured to automatically login the user "user" at startup. You can change this at the "Accounts" pane of "System Preferences" as well. Proceed...
    10) Click "Login Option"
    11) Change AUTOMATIC LOGIN to either "Disabled" or your new username (your choice).

  • New Macbook Pro i7 with 750G HDD - Tech Wants to Upgrade to 250g SSD? Is this right?

I really need some guidance and advise! I am NOT a computer savy person so please forgive my ignorance!
I just purchased my daughters MacBook Pro i7 with a 750g HDD. It is basically brand new and has been used less than 40 hours. Still under warranty.
I will be using this laptop for work and need to run Microsoft Word, Excel, surf the net, and have a large volume of pictures and videos to transfer over for my job. I have always kept these images on my computer and would like to continue to do so moving forward. I do not want a separate hard drive if I can do without.
I went to a computer store about having the data moved from my old MAC onto the new one or place it on a Time Capsule. The computer technician advised me not to use the Time Capsule but to just move everything over to the new MAC. He wants to take out my current HDD which is like new and replace it with a 250G SSD to make my computer faster and perform better. The HDD drive will be removed because I don't want to give up the CD drive that I do use with work.
Is this a wise move? What would be the benefit of replacing this hard drive? I just need feedback on whether or not this is truly an upgrade or if I should find a new computer technician!

For faster boot and shut down times and faster response in resource intensive applications you will lose 500 GB storage.  For web browsing, emails, text editing and the like, there will be no noticeable difference in the operation of the MBP with a SSD.
For the faster speeds that a SSD affords, I personally am more interested in having the extra storage.  If you really think that speed is important, install a !TB SDD.  For the average user, speed is not a critical factor.  The fiscally prudent thing to do is keep what you have, use it for a while and make a decision based on actual use rather than on the opinion of a person who may or may not have the same views as you.
    Ciao.
