New MacBook Pro Will Not Charge While in Use

I'm not sure if this is an issue, however, I have been unable to find more information regarding this, so I thought I'd ask. While plugged in (MagSafe LED=Orange) the computer hovers around the same percentage of charge (i.e. +/-2%), even with very low to no use, and every once in a while says (Not Charging). However, when in sleep with the deck shut, it charges promptly as it should.
I've occasionally seen it charge slightly while in use while using the plug without the extension portion, however I am unsure if this is related. I have tried resetting the SMC, restart, etc. So my question simply is, is this an issue, or is the computer specified not to charge while open?
Thanks!

As eww indicated, it may be a fault with the charger. The reason for my question was because you can use the 60 watt charger that comes with the 13" model on the 15" model (which comes with an 85 watt charger), but... it will only provide enough power to operate the 15" model while in use... it does not provide enough power to both operate the machine while charging it. It will only charge with the machine shut down. Your symptoms sounded very similar... but as you're using the correct charge, it may just be a bum charger. These types of things tend to fail early on if they're going to fail at all. With it only being a few weeks old, that would also seem to make it more likely to be a faulty charger. Apple tends to be very good with these things. If you have an Apple store nearby, set up a Genius appointment online. There's a good chance they'll just replace the charger for you. It's a good to bring it in though so they can check it out for you just in case the problem is with the charging circuitry in your Mac and not the charger.

I have a 13" MacBook Pro that was purchased new about a month ago. Today, I noticed that it wasn't charging. I plugged it into a couple different outlets, but the indicator light on the power cord won't come on at all. Any ideas why? Thanks for your time.

call AppleCare and see if they can troubleshoot it for you since this service is free to you for the first 90 days you own a new mac.

  • My Macbook Pro will not charge. I have tried other charges and nothing. Can the MagSafe port go bad? Is that expensive to repair?

My Macbook Pro will not charge. I have tried other charges and nothing. Can the MagSafe port go bad? Is that expensive to repair?

The port can fail. Internal boards can fail. Batteries can fail. All with the result that no charging occurs.
You can try Resetting the System Management Controller and you can try Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters.
But usually you will have to take the mac in to a service place for testing.  It can get expensive, although occasionally it is not.

  • My macbook pro will not charge when I am using it.

My macbook pro will not charge when I am using it. My battery will say "charged" then "not charging" and it goes back and fourth. It says "Power Source: Power Adapter". But when I use my pro it will loose the power source then reconnect a second later to it. This problem is getting annoying because I have to stop using my macbook pro to charge it.

  • MacBook pro will not charge even when the charger is plugged in and working

So this is a strange one.
I have been using my MacBook pro for a lot of film editing and motion graphics. Recently, I noticed that my battery kept going down, even when charging. I thought nothing on it and kept using it. After around 4 hours, the battery went from 90% to 23% WHILE plugged in. This got me nervous. When I plug in the MagSafe charger, the light comes on and I get the "charging" symbol in my toolbar. The light turns orange and then, after a few minutes, the power starts to go down instead of up.
I have had this laptop since Christmas 2012 and this has never happened before. The laptop does charge, but only when I am running no application, when the screen is shut or when the laptop is powered off. Bear in mind that right now, I am on Firefox, that is the only application open, yet the charge is still going down. I assumed it was because I was using Premiere CS6, After Effects CS6 and Cinema4D, but now even when they are not open, the batter will not charge when I am using the laptop.
What is going on? Is in the charger? Any help would be greatly appreciated and I am starting to stress!
    Thank you everyone for reading,
    -Rory Campbell
UPDATE: I am currently only running Firefox and Finder. Now the laptop is charging as usual. However the second I open up Premiere, After Effects etc, it goes down. I have no idea what is going on!

Try resetting the PRAM and SMC. If you don't know how to, don't worry. They're very easy to reset. Just google how to do it. If that doesn't work, the only thing I would suggest is to take both the laptop and the charger to your local genius bar to have them examined. If it's less than a year old, apple should replace whatever is wrong with it as long as it was a factory defect.

  • My MacBook Pro will not charge.

    Hi Apple Support Communities!
    I have a 2006 MacBook Pro 1,1.
This computer is equipped with an Intel Core Duo processor, and 2 gigabytes of 667 DDR2 SDRAM.
It works absolutely fine, but I am having small problem with it: it will not charge. Since it is from 2006, Apple considers it to be "Vintage and Obsolete." I have no idea what is wrong with it, and am in need of it in proper working condition by this August. I do not have the original install discs for it, and have no way of running the hardware test to see if there are any problems. What do you all suggest? Thank you in advance!

    joncwyatt,
you can contact Apple directly to purchase a replacement pair of grey DVDs for your MacBook Pro, which has (among other things) its model-specific Apple Hardware Test. (The Apple stores don’t stock the grey DVDs.)
Was your new battery sold by Apple, or was it manufactured by a third-party? Have you tried purchasing a different battery for your MacBook Pro, to make sure that the problem is not with the new battery currently in your possession?

  • New Macbook Pro will not let me login

I have a fairly new Macbook Pro.  When I turn it on, the Apple screen comes up, then the user icons.  I can move the cursor just fine, but when I try to click on my user icon, the computer doesn't respond when I click on the icon.  This is an intermittent problem, and has just started happening in the past two weeks.  I have to shut the computer down by holding the on/off switch down, then restart, hoping it will work.
I took it to the Apple Store Genius bar and they ran a diagnostic on it last weekend.  Clean as a whistle, and of course, it worked just fine there.
Any suggestions or ideas about what could be wrong?  I have Bootcamp and can access Windows on it, no problem.  This seems to be an iOS problem.

Tapping to click is not the default behavior of the trackpad, and doesn't work in the login screen or in Recovery. You have to physically click the trackpad button by depressing it.

  • Old Mac running Mountain Lion 'sees' Canon IP5000, new MacBook pro will not. No driver available from canon. Is there a way of transfering whatever is working from old mac to new?

I have two older macs running Mountain Lion that have been upgraded over the years from Leopard. They have continued to be able to print to a Canon IP5000 and use a driver that is fully functional. On the new MacBook Pro, the printer is found, but no driver is available for Mountain Lion from apple or Canon. Is there a way of getting the driver info from the old mac so that it will work on the new one?

Sorry, it says "New Event," not "New Entry." My bad.

  • New Macbook Pro will not shut down.

    Hi,
So I just got a new Macbook Pro four days ago from the Apple store and I'm already running into a little bit of trouble, that being my macbook will not shut down. Once I open the shut down window, the normal countdown that comes with it usually will not appear and I am incapable of clicking the shut down button. I have not downloaded anything onto my mac besides Microsoft Silverlight, Adobe Flashplayer, and a pdf document of my receipt from the apple store. I have burned some of my music CDs into itunes and browsed the web (nothing fishy; just some shopping, movie streaming from netflix and youtube, and reading articles online published by universities). Should I take the computer to the Apple store or is this something I can fix on my own?
    Thanks so much

If I were you I'd take it back to the Apple store and let someone at the Genius Bar take a look at it. The worst case is you made an extra trip, but at least this way you can exchange it immediately if there's a problem. You only have a 14 day window for this, might as well take advantage of it.
The only other thing I can suggest is to open the Force Quit option from the Apple icon in the upper left corner. See if there are any apps that show Not Responding. If there are any like that, force quit them then try to shut down.
