New MacBook Pro won't open/load .dmg files
I have new MacBook Pro, purchased in January 2014. I have downloaded two .dmg files - and neither will load!! I downloaded the first from www.blurb.com. It's called booksmart. But, after I've downloaded the file, I notice that Finder has it listed as a "document file" ??!? What do I do?? thanks

have you tried renaming booksmart to booksmart.dmg, to see if Finder then considers it executable?

I have a new 15" MacBookPro and cannot open iPhoto. The message reads "You can't open the application iPhoto because it is not supported on this type of Mac." I used Migration Assistant which moved over the applications yesterday -- took over 5 hours and didn't move the documents at all.
After reading in some posts somewhere that iLife '09 needed to be purchased separately, I took out my iLife family pack, and ran the install for it on the new MacBook Pro.
I tried to install iLife Support 9.0.3 but got a message that "This update does not need to be installed. A newer version of this software is already installed." Garageband boots up fine.
There is only one iPhoto application installed and it is version 8.1.2. Says it's an Application (PowerPC)

Why did you do that? iLife (including iPhoto) comes preinstalled on all new systems - moving iPhoto from another computer is not necessary and does not work

Did you delete the iPhoto receipts ("your hard drive" ==> library ==> receipts) prior to doing this install?

It is possible that the iPhoto application is just fine and it is only your library - to test that depress the option key and launch iPhoto - create a new library and import a few photos into it and test it - if that works then the application is ok - to switch back to the main library you will need to repeat the option - launch.
Once you have the iPhoto application straightened out, It it likely that your iPhoto library did not transfer correctly - Migration assistance does not always do a good job on the iPhoto library - Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

I'm having trouble opening a word document on my new Macbook Pro. I opened it with no problems on my iPhone5. I tried using TextEdit and OpenOffice. Thanks!
I open Word documents on my Mac using Pages and textedit without any problems.
I also have a copy of OpenOffice and it can also open Word documents without any problems.
Could you please provide more details on exactly what you mean when you say you having troubles opening Word documents? What kind of troubles?

My Macbook pro won't open downloaded programs, it just opens the code it was written in using the text and edit app. How can I fix this? I just bought the computer last month so this is some what frustrating.
If you are downloading .exe files, those are Windows programs, and will not run on your Mac unless you install Windows on it. (That is possible, if you need one of those apps.)

What is the exact name of the cable I need to connect my old hard drive from my macbook pro, which has been removed from the computer, to my new macbook pro? I need to transfere files from the old hard drive to the new computer.
No eSATA to USB. Just a SATA/IDE to USB adapter. Google SATA/IDE to USB adapter and you will get tons of links to buy them. Most likely your local computer electronics store has them, although they might be more expensive buying locally than online.
I have several. You can get either USB 2, which what I recommend, or USB 3. USB is backward compatible so a USB 3 adapter will work on a USB 2 port and a USB 2 adapter will work on a USB 3 port. Backward compatible in both directions.
I suggest a USB 2 type because there have been some problems with certain USB 3 devices, the USB 3 interface used isn't all that good in those certain devices. USB 3 is still fairly new where as USB 2 has been around for over 10 years.

Well, if simply double-clicking the .bbb file doesn't work, first try dragging the file onto the BBDM icon (either in the Dock, on the desktop or in the Applications folder or wherever it's stored). That tells Finder to open it with that application.
Otherwise, right-click on the file and choose the Open With option. If BBDM is not the default, select Get Info and use the Open with box from there to select it (if it's not in the list, choose 'other' and navigate to it), then click the 'change all' button. -

Of course. Office 2008 and 2011 are supported in OS X Mavericks, so you can use Office without any problem.
You can purchase Office for Mac from the Microsoft website > http://www.microsoft.com/mac It's easy to install.
Apart from Microsoft Office, you have other apps you may consider, like Apple iWork (Numbers, Keynote and Pages) and LibreOffice, free and open-source. I recommend you to give it a try first -
New MacBook Pro won't shut down.
I recently got a new MacBook Pro running Yosemite.
Very often (4 times out of 5) when I want to shut it down it doesn't do anything and I can wait and wait the top bar is gone but the dock remains accessible and the mac does't shut down. Most of the time I have to force the shut down and I don't like doing so.
Again, when I want to shut it down, the background and the dock remain visible but the top bar disappears.
The weird thing is that, the dock says finder is still opened but when I click on the app, it won't open it at all and other applications can be opened.
Anybody has a solution to that?

Have a brand new MacBook Pro. Downloaded Acrobat Reader from Adobe web site, and tried to install. Getting an "Unable to Load Metafile" error.
Looked it up on Google, and didn't see any useful information.

New macbook pro won't turn on unless it's plugged in and won't charge
I just bought a new MacBook Pro and it won't turn on unless it's plugged in. When I unplug it, it immediately shuts down. It's not my charger because my brother has the same laptop so I tried his and it still doesn't work. The battery light on the charger is green and it says on the top of the screen not charging.

Hello. So today i got my new MacBook Pro 13''. I started to use it and competely emptied battery. Now i can't turn it on, it don't charge and my MagSafe charge don't blink. What do i do? It's my first Mac and first problem in first day, it makes me mad.
I'm having a similar problem and I'm ready to explode. I have a huge work deadline tomorrow and can't get the work done. My 4 month old macbook pro won't charge anymore. I'm now on an old pc desperately searching for help.
I switched to my first mac because everyone said how great they were. Since when does a nearly new laptop stop charging? apparently this is a common problem and my sales person did not inform me when I asked specifically about potential bugs. I am furious, frustrated and very unhappy with this. Apple, you suck tonight.
Here's the problem: The light on the magsafe adapter did not work this evening when I tried to charge it. I did nothing out of the ordinary. It was on the desk and I plugged it in as usual. I spent an hour on the phone and online trying to get apple support to no avail. Apparently their 24/7 line is not 24/7 in Canada?
I cannot remove the battery as the site says, so I'm completely screwed at the mercy of this bullcrap brand. I did everything advised on the site, including checking the SMC and the cord itself. With only 20 minutes left and the battery ticking, I tried to email myself all the files I need, but they're huge and just when it was near finishing, the battery went from 10 to 21 minutes and it shut down.
Now it won't turn on, of course. The little button on the side has only one green light flashing. The adapter does nothing. NO red or green like before.
I am at my cottage and do not have an apple dealer nearby. Who can I scream at for this? All my previous computers could be easliy fixed when things go wrong. Remind me what is so great about this overpriced mean little machine!%^%!^*%&!(
WHY does a NEW laptop that costs a premium have such a fragile adapter / battery? Is there another adapter I can use to charge it? I'm at my wit's end. -
New Macbook pro won't connect to older external hard drive
My old MacBook suddently died after seven years. It contained a lot of data that I had backed up on an external hard drive using TimeMachine and transferring files to it. When I hooked it up to my new MacBook Pro (released mid-2012 I think), I couldn't seem to connect. Any ideas why?
does it show up in disk utility at all?
Did you have a second NON time machine copy of vital data as should be the case?

Is it possible to use the Acrobat SDK to split 1 document out of a very large pdf file using it's known bookmark? For example, if I have a very large pdf with thousands of bookmarks, and I already know the name of a particular bookmark, can I use the
