New MacBook refuses to read install DVDs

I just got a new MacBook 2.2,
But it refuses to read the installation DVDs - it spits them out after some seconds of trying.
It does however, read a CD, and a single Layer DVD.
Does apple not know, that Dual Layer DVDs are still not widely used besides Movie DVDs ?

I know, that DL-DVDs are common,
but they are not widely used as OS install media.
I even think, this is the first time a company did it.
DL DVDs are harder to read for the drives then single layer Discs.
Most likely this is a firmware problem (of course this is a guess).
Also, when drives get older, they chance that they will not read DL-DVDs is rising.
See this thread:

Of course, I will return the Machine.

  • Brand new Macbook slow to read data DVD's

I jsut got a new macbook today and am installing over 100GB of music software and samples. It is taking forever as you might imagine, but I must say that it is running markedly slower that my 24" iMac, which is totally strange because the have the same exact drive.
Is there something I'm doing wrong? Is there a setting that I could change to optimize my drive speed?? Such as unchecking the box that says "Go very slow?"
I'm not trying to whine. I just find it completely odd that the same drive is taking 3-4 times longer to to the same amount of work in my macbook.
If anybody has any ideas that would be great, thanks!

    Hey Guys,
I have the same odd issue. My "old" MacBook Pro takes about 5-6 hours to install Logic Studio while my brand new iMac takes around a HUGE 12 hours to install the whole thing. Once installed it's fine and fast, but the install is painfully slow.
I still find that 5-6 hours is slow but I a realize that there is around 60Gb to install...
I am almost certain that it all relates to some problems with the not so Super "Super Drives" as there is almost no I/O activity or CPU while the audio files are extracted.

I am trying to install a brand new WD 500 gb sata internal hd in my macbook pro. the original install dvd does not recognise the hd. all hardware is ok. any help?

For some reason OS X disks (whatever edition or flavors) that are supplied with Apple products only seem to contain a limited knowledge of available hard drives on the market at the time of thier publishing. This (rather opportunistically) creates a "Best Before" stale-OS X-software-copy situation where upgrading to or replacing a defective internal SATA hard drive with a newer, better or larger one is a largely hit and miss affair.
If you buy the latest and greatest disk drive available for any older Mac you are likely to run into unresolvable problems making a clean re-install of your own, old edition or flavor of OS X onto any newer or larger hard drive since the OEM (gray) "OS X Install Disks" that Apple supply with retail products seem to contain only time-sensitive lists/mapings of then-known target drives that the Drive Management Tool in the then-published old "Installer Software" will support.
Presumably new (colorful "X") retail versions of OS X (10.whatever.whatever) also contain time-limited Installers with limited knowledge of and adaptability to/compatability with a limited number of old hard drives then kicking-around on the market.
This is especially a problem nowadays since the countless "puny old" hard drives that have been on the market are largely obsolete in a few months time, as manufacturers continue to produce larger and cheaper units, discontinuing older puny products... So if your drive fails you need an exact old (or similar familial) replacement drive for your "backup copy of OS X" to do a fresh, clean OS X re-install. Otherwise you need to purchase a new retail version of OS X, since yours is now effectively obsolete. Purchasing an old, puny drive to re-install your version.flavor of OS X to avoid buying a new version of OS X is a rather false economy.
If you still have a working old hard drive with your old polluted 10.version.flavor of OS X still working on it you apparently must clone it with Time Machine or the newest version of Disk Utility (disk image copying) to most newer, larger drives, and a clean reinstall to such new hard drives is not possible.

  • MacBook Pro not reading some DVD's.

My 18 month old, 15" MacBook Pro refuses to read some DVD's, even a new DVD out of the packet. When I insert the disc I can hear the drive whir up but it doesn't whir up as far as it does when I put a DVD in that it will read. The drive just keeps whirring up and down and if I leave it eventually I get a message saying I have inserted a blank DVD but this usually appears after a good 5 minutes. The only way I can I remove the DVD is by restarting my MacBook whilst holding down the eject button.
    Any ideas?

Another help source (if you haven't already done so).
Go to your OS Help Menu.  In the search field type dvd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to  your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility.  Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

  • I am trying to install Iphoto on my new MacBook Air adn the install button is grayed out  Any suggestions

I am trying to install iphoto 09 on my new MacBook Air and the install button is grayed out.  Both for installation and custom install.  Is there a problem that I am not aware of?

    Check for receipts
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

Try zapping PRAM. Hold down the cndopt+RP keys on restart (with the Leopard disk in), and release them after 3 "bongs". Then, immediately hold down the C key.

I have a new MacBook Pro with Iphoto installed when purchased.  When editing a photo, primarily orientation changes, the slideshow initially displays the photos in proper orientation.  However, after leaving Iphoto and shutting down the computer, and then going back to run a slideshow the photo displays back to its' original orientation, that is, the edit-change was not saved.  Please help...the program information says all edit-changes are automatically save and therefore there is no save command, but my changes are not being saved...thank you for any suggestions...HM

what version of iPhoto and of the OS?
Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database

So we just got a new Macbook and I also installed the apple configurator tool. I'm using it to prepare the iPads for deployment and it won't let me prepare them? It gets an error stating "retrieving iOS info from apple" then it stops and says "internet error". My Internet connection is fine with the Mac-book. It shows the iPad is listed under the Prepare logo up top as 1 but under supervise none are shown. Although it does show itself in iTunes. Also the profile I created is fresh and has no errors. We have tryed nearly everything I cna think of and online forums are not giving us to much info on this error.

A wag at this.  A port issue?
    "Apple Push Notification network setup
When MDM servers and iOS devices are behind a firewall, some network configuration may need to take place in order for the MDM service to function properly. To send notifications from an MDM server to Apple Push Notification service, TCP port 2195 needs to be open. To reach the feedback service, TCP port 2196 will need to be open as well. For devices connecting to the push service over Wi-Fi, TCP port 5223 should
    be open."

Try it on your home network where there isn't a lot of 'controls' -- network filtering , firewalls, etc.

  • No cd or dvd player on new macbook pro. how to install external software

my new macbook pro with retina display has no dvd or cd player. how could i install any external software that comes in a cd like office for mac or any other type of software

I purchased an external superdrive for this purpose. Apple makes one, and so do others. I suppose you could use a drive in another mac via sharing, if you have the necessary hardware. As for office, you can install that via download - that's what I did.

  • New Macbook Pro + Tiger Pre installed Leopard Connectivity Problems!!!

hey guys... well let me try for the 2nd time to post this before it loses connection and crashes!!!!
on Friday i brought a new Macbook Pro 2.2ghz, for the last year i have been using a MAcbook 1.8ghz Core 2 Duo... worked flawless and loved it... but with Leopard out, i decided to take the plunge and move up to the next level and have something with better graphics and more features... so it seemed!
i erased the hdd and installed Leopard, which i had purchased for my Macbook, but decided to hold till i got this...
install went smoothly and got into OS and did the update center... started downloading... fine.... went and got a coffee... came back.... still on the first file of the update donwload.. hmmmmm weird.. normally be halfway or finished by now! i checked the wireless and noticed the send/receive was just hanging.. *not disconnected from the wireless router..* anyway i decided to hard reset the router and let it reconnect so it was fresh.. connected fine... started donwloading again.. same happened... anyway i left it donwload and do its stuff as i saw there was a key chain update which resolved some wireless issues.. great i thought.. Apple must have seen there is a problem and fixed it.. yay!!.......... heck no!
rebooted the laptop after install was done... SAME problem... not only that... i couldnt be on iChat/MSN for more than 5-10 minutes before it decided that it was going to fall asleep and stop doing anything before realizing that ****... someone is still wanting some connectivity.... by that time its disconnected/timed out from server/webpages... Webpages take about 15-30 seconds to load on intermitent basis...
Next is the bandwidth... i usually download between 180-205kb/s in Tiger on Macbook... in leopard im lucky to break the 100kb/s barrier for more than 30 seconds before it goes to 10-30kb/second!!!!!!!!! and upload speed is killed too!!!
i have read through various threads on the boards and have entered different tcp/rwin commands and turned off ipv6 in wireless but still same happens... no airport2 file either to remove..
i'm really annoyed as it seems from wanting to go to a better laptop ive only gone and brought defective hardware which i dont understand why Apple didn't test this prior to release
FIX IT quick please, i feel like taking this thing back... what use is it if i cant browse the internet which is a basic function on any laptop now a days yet vital it works!
maybe reinstalling Tiger is the only option left, there goes a weekend of installing programs/games/updates!!!!! annoyed

    cheers for reply dude
will see how this gets on, also changed the channel to 6, see how that gets on..
still seems slow loading pages tho.. test from speedguide from a uk server...

    seems ok?
Although RWIN TCP/IP analyzer seems to point out problems...
    MTU = 1442
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput. If you are using a router, it could be limiting your MTU regardless of Registry settings.
    MSS = 1402
MSS is not optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU value.
Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 65330
    RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 65330
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
    515936 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 8)
    257968 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 4)
    128984 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 2)
    64492 (MSS x 46)
    Your TCP Window limits you to: 2613 kbps (327 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
    Your TCP Window limits you to: 1045 kbps (131 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
    MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 45 hops
    TTL value is ok.
    Timestamps (RFC1323) = ON
Note: Timestamps add 12 bytes to the TCP header of each packet, reducing the space available for useful data.

  • My new MacBook Air won't install the latest software update.  How do I fix that?

I can't get my new MacBook Air to install the latest software update.
It keeps telling me that an "unexpected error" occurred.
    How do I fix this?

Your posting above says you're running Lion (Version 10.7.3).
Going to the current version of Mountain Lion (Version 10.8.2) requires a $20 purchase (upgrade fee) from the App Store.
Further, if your iMac is older than mid-2007, it cannot be upgraded to Mountain Lion.  Only mid-2007 or newer iMacs can handle it.
