New MacBook seems slower than it should be

I have had my new 2Ghz Core 2 with 2GB of ram for about a month or so now and I have to say I have not been that impressed with the speed of the machine. It boots, and shuts down like a blaze and once applications have been opened and closed once they too open and close like a blaze. With that said, applications just seem to take longer to open that first time than they do on my old PC with a single core 1.8Ghz Athlon.
Now this is my first mac so is this just me?

From http://neowiki.sixthcrusade.com/index.php/NeoOfficeandAqua :
"So...is NeoOffice written in Java?
No.
NeoOffice is a Mac OS X native version of OpenOffice.org that uses small amounts of Java code for graphics drawing and configuration.
OpenOffice.org is written primarily in platform-agnostic C++. However, NeoOffice takes advantage of Mac OS X's advanced Java integration to tap into the Mac OS X look-and-feel. In other words, the little bits of Java in NeoOffice primarily have to do with operations that affect how the application appears to the user. The "guts" of the office suite are written in C++. (The code that makes up NeoOffice is 99% OpenOffice.org code shared among all OpenOffice.org platforms and 1% Mac OS X-specific code in Java, C++, C, and Objective-C.)"

  • New MacBook Pro slower than a snail

I have just upgraded to a new MacBook, and am having speed issues, first with Mountain Lion and now with Mavericks. It seems as though almost all operations, even selecting a file in the Finder, bring up the beach ball of death, and opening applications like Keynote or Pages can take 30 or more seconds. I am not here to knock Apple, although as a 20+ year user I am disappointed since this is the first time I have ever encountered anything lke this, but I am lost as to where to begin to correct this. Below is the latest EtreCheck output -any suggestions will be gratefully received.

First, back up all data immediately unless you already have a current backup. If you can't back up, stop here. Do not take any of the steps below.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Brand new Macbook Pro slower than my 2006 Macbook

I bought a new Macbook Pro last month and upgraded the RAM to 4 GB and the hard drive to 500 GB. My previous Mac was a mid-2006 Macbook with 2 GB RAM.
I was expecting it to be noticeably faster than my 2006 Macbook (which is still running Tiger/10.4), but it isn't. Two things are particularly noticeable.
    1) Startup time. The 2006 Macbook is 5 or 10 seconds faster starting up.
    2) Safari. Safari is a couple of seconds faster loading identical websites on the 2006 Macbook. I tried updating Safari on the Macbook Pro to the new Safari 4 beta, and that is slightly faster, but still noticeably slower than on my Macbook.
I've tried running the set of Applescripts called "Maintenance" (available on the web) to do all regular maintenance tasks.
I've run software update. Everything is up to date.
Any suggestions of other things I should be checking to try to improve the speed of my Macbook Pro are much appreciated.
I find it really mystifying that performance is so noticeably worse on a brand new, much more powerful machine.
    Thanks

    Thanks for the replies.
In re the OS, I personally don't see many significant improvements in OS 10.5. Sure, little things here and there, but major power improvements over 10.4 that should cause startup time to be slower? I don't see it. I'm surprised in the design phase Apple's software engineers would allow longer startup time (always one of their biggest selling point over the Windows world) in return for such things as being able to hit the space bar in the finder to open a document quickly. I'm not using Time Machine, for instance, so that shouldn't be slowing down startup... or at least actually loading it in functioning mode shouldn't be slowing things down.
In re Safari, I'm doing as scientific a test as I possibly can here at home. Both computers sitting right next to each other, connected to the same network wirelessly, clicking on the same web link at exactly the same time. My 2006 Macbook is consistently faster at loading the page. Even more, it is significantly faster at loading the page to a "usable" point. For instance, if I click on the main page of the New York Times, the 2006 Macbook will load faster and will let me scroll down much earlier in the load process. On the 2009 MBP, the page shows up a few seconds slower, and it takes another few seconds more before the spinning beach ball stops and I can scroll down on the page. This is true both with Safari 3 and 4 on the MBP.
I just find it weird that a much more powerful computer, with a "new, improved" operating system and twice the amount of RAM, is noticeably more sluggish on these really basic tasks.
My next step is to go to the Apple store and try to compare mine to some other MBPs...
I have issues with some developments at Apple recently. For instance, the gen 2 iPod shuffle strikes me as a perfect design. Does it need to be smaller? Moving the controls to the headset seems really weird to me, much less convenient than the old one. I know that comment is OT, I just am starting to wonder about some decisions at Apple.
Not enough to make me complain seriously... I still vastly prefer Apple to the other options. But that sense I had for years that somebody really smart is paying attention to all these details and getting them right... that's starting to fade away for me. On the other hand, I do not have an iPhone and I think it's clear a lot of Apple's resources are going into the iPhone these days.

  • New Macbook Pro slower than old one.

I recently got a new Macbook Pro, unibody, with 2.8 Ghz core 2 duo and 4 GB Ram. I am upgrading from a Macbook Pro with the previous body design, that is 2.5 Ghz core 2 duo and came with 2GB RAM but I upgraded to 4GB myself.
I got the new MBP, migrated some applications and my settings. Now when I start Firefox I sometimes get the spinning beach ball for a few moments before my homepage loads. Also for example, if I have 2 tabs open, with one playing a youtube video in the background and I'm browsing in the other, the video will stutter and I'll get the beach ball for a few moments when I try to go to another page. This happens no matter what browser I try (Firefox, Safari, Camino). And it never happens on my older MBP, it's a little annoying that a system that is 2 years older seems to perform better.
    Any ideas or tips?

You might want to check that you have selected a startup disk as "Macintosh HD" so the OS x knows where to boot from. If there is no selection under startup items in System Preferences then boot up is delayed by a few seconds as OS X would look for a functional startup disk.
Check and see if this works for you in bringing down boot times.

  • Brand New MacBook Graphics Slower Than Year Older Model!

    Hi,
Are the new late 2007 MacBooks supposed to have slower graphics than the previous year's models? If I try to run the new Leopard Arabesque screen saver on a 2007 MacBook with a Intel GMA X3100 graphics chip, the animation is jerky and stroboscopic. However if I try Arabesque on a year old MacBook, the animation is smooth and fluid.
Is this a fault with the particular 2007 MacBook I've tested, or are they all like this?

It's very interesting as most users never notice the difference, just those that actually push their equipment a little.
As with most issues like this I would invite you to open a ticket in the [Apple Bug Reporting System|http://bugreport.apple.com> so that Apple can add your information to their impact report and get this fixed quicker.
    Hope this helps! 

It's anyone's guess.  Startup and shutdown as well as application launches take longer in Lion than they did in Snow Leopard on the three Macs that I "upgraded," and I also see the spinning beach ball more often than I used to.  Add to that the HDMI-related crashes on my Mac mini...
Quite frankly, I have yet to see where I have gained any advantages after upgrading to Lion, and I definititely have problems that I didn't have under Snow Leopard.  Of course, all of it must be my fault, as Apple would never ever relase an upgrade that was less than perfect.

  • Using new Extreme N in mixed environment, seems slower than plain old G...

I got a new Extreme N couple days ago. Installed it as the main base, with an older Airport Extreme and an Express as WDS stations.
My MacBook Pro does not have N hardware in it (grrrr, don't get me started . But my wife's MacBook does. I got the N because I really want a networked hard drive and figured we'll all have N at some point.
I understand that the network speed gets knocked down to G speed if there are non N clients on it. However, I swear it seems noticeably slower overall than my plain old G network.
Anyone else feeling like a mixed network is slower than plain G?
Also, does anyone have a sense for how security options impact peformance?
    Thanks.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I'm in a similar position, picking up the new AE this weekend, and form what I've read there's a better way, and here's what I'm going to do, maybe you'll want to try it:
-Setup the new AEx as an N-only network, ramped up.
-Connect either the older AEx or EXp via ethernet to it, and hang it off there in bridge mode.
-Try to put some distance between the two, at least 20 feet.
-You can set it up as a g-only network if you like, and it'll handle wireless communications from you, and the the other g base station, also offering it's services on your total network, but without decreasing the n-speed.
Hope it helps. For more info on setting this up, consult the 'Designing Airport Extreme-n Networks" manual, here (PDF).

  • New MacBook Pro slower wifi than iBookG4

My new MacBook Pro tests at a slower download speed than my iBook G4 1.42 GHz.
I am running a wireless network using a Belkin router (b&g enabled) on a cable network connection (20Mb/2Mb).
When connected via ethernet, the MacBook Pro gets 20,000 kbps download. When connected via wifi, it gets 7-10,000 kbps. (DNS servers are identified and listed in the network control panel.)
The iBook gets 15,000-20,000 kbps via wifi. The iBook is running 10.4.11.
Is this a function of the MacBook Pro or Leopard?
(speeds measured with repeated tests at speakeasy.net).

You can definitely thank Leopard for that.

  • New macbook running slow

I just purchased a new Macbook this month. I transferred everything from my old computer (a powerbook) to my new one and it seems like everything on the new computer is running more slowly than it should. For example, it takes a few minutes for the computer to open programs, like adobe acrobat reader or word. I get the spinning rainbow pinwheel a lot when the computer encounters new documents or applications to open. The other day, I downloaded a 2 page PDF document and it took the computer more than 3 full minutes or spinning pinwheel to open acrobat and the document. It doens't just happen with acrobat, it happens with most programs. Once the programs are open, they seem to run okay. I am planning to upgrade the ram (I have 512 right now), but even without the upgrade, this computer is running very slowly. I had the same problem with my old powerbook towards the end, but I assumed it was the aging computer. Is there anything I can check, as far as the software or setup in my new computer that could fix this problem? I think maybe whatever was slowing down my old computer was transferred to my new computer and is causing the same issue. I'm not sure where to start, as far as troubleshooting it and figuring out what's wrong. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The apps you mention -- Adobe Reader and MS Word -- are not Intel-native. So they run in the emulation layer called Rosetta. That makes them slow.
Try using Preview to open PDFs.
Adding more RAM will help some, because Rosetta itself needs RAM in addition to the application it's running. But the ultimate solution is for Adobe and Microsoft to release Intel versions of their apps. This should happen sometime in 2007.

  • Why is my new macbook running slow?

I've had this computer since August 2012 and now it's suddently starting to run slow. The spinning wheel keeps appearing evertime I use the computer. I tired shuting down and restarting the thing but it still acts the same. It pops up every few seconds and it's frustrating. I also tried deleting history and other things to make the computer work faster but nothing seems to work.
This all started happening on Saturday. It was working fine since then. I don't know what's the problem. Simply just clicking on anything now is a hassel.

I am also so dsappointed of buying macbook pro for the first time, and to think it was just almost a month ago....I am worried about the over heating issue, battery span that never lasprot that long as what the advertisement says...I really take extra care of this gadget because it is my first time having this so expenssive lappy...Ooohhh before I forget,my gadget is Macbook Pro 13 with memory of 8gb 1600 MHz DDR3..processor 2.9GHz Intel core I7...the only heave application tha I downloaded was the Mountain Lion I think ,and it was updated now from 10.8.1 - 10.8.2 ..maybe the next heavy app is the google chrome...and the rest is those apps that I bought from the Apple store that didnt cost me $10...before buying this unit ,I am using a lappy from Gateway with windows OS that runs slowly  because of maybe being so old...lol I am using it for almost 3yrs  because I only bought it from a junk shop alternately with Dell desktop thats so cheap,I only bought it almost $200 from a junkshop still.now after learning to fix and upgrade computers,I upgraded the DELL desktop from 1GB to 2GB,but I upraded my hardrive from 80gb to 1000gb...now I did test booting the 2,the desktop and this new Macbook Pro.my dell really boot so fast half more than this macbook pro...when I am downloading videos, really the Dell desktop have the fastest loading and downloading...I am not kidding and telling lies...I am so shock to know the real truth....I am sorry, but i is really true...But I promise my self to take care of this gadget because its my first time to have a genuinely brand new gadget and so expenssive...if no one believe this, i will upload a video on my youtube accnt just to prove that I am not telling a lie...oooh before I forget...just to prove that this gadget is geguine and new, here is the Serial Number of my Macbook Pro 13 which I posses almost a month now.. • Brand new macbook pro slows down after I transfer files on from old computer

Hey, I just purchased a brand new Macbook Pro 3.5 GhZ Haswell processor, 500 gb of flash memory, 16 gb of RAM, OS X Mavericks, 17" retina display and while it's been great upon first booting up after I transferred over my music and books and docs from my old mac (about 150 gb worth (so I still have over 300 gb free on the new one)) I've seen a massive slow down and it's started giving me the beach ball of death which was the main reason I got a new macbook as my old one was beach balling so much it was nearly unusable. Very upset that this brand new stupidly expensive computer is already doing this. Any advice is apppreciated.

Either your RAM is no good, of poor quality, the wrong specs or it's not installed correctly or it got subjected to static electricity when you put it in.
Best Buy isn't as Mac centric, thus the quality of RAM that Mac's require may not be there.
You should have purchased from Crucial.com or Other World Computing or similar that tests the RAM to make sure it works the first time you put it in, as it costs everyone money to ship bad RAM back and forth.
I put in 16GB a couple of days ago, took five minutes and it works perfectly.
Nothing like top tier RAM for a top of the line machine, especially with all those tiny, easy to lose screws Apple uses.

  • New hard drive slower than old one

Hello, my Seagate 120GB 5400rpm drive crashed 6 weeks ago and I made use of the warranty to get a replacement (refurbished) drive. I think this drive is no good because I have noticed a marked decrease in performance:
-Upon coming back from sleep mode the screen turns on but it pinwheels for several seconds, showing the time it was when I put it to sleep.
-My battery also lasts considerably less now. The battery is about a year old and had been lasting me up to two hours. It now doesn't last much more than one.
-I also tried to rip a dvd today and had to stop because it was going 5x slower than it had even on this drive when I first got it.
Is there anything else that could be causing me this decreased performance besides a subpar drive?
I have been in touch with Seagate again this weekend and they suggested I send it in for another replacement, which is fine, but is there a way I can copy all of this drive onto my replacement when it gets here? Or should I need to start fresh and reinstall everything on the new one?
    Thanks.

  • New Mac Mini slower than my 4 years old iMac

My Intel iMac (20" display) four years old is out of order (I think the Power Supply was gone), and I bought the new entry level Mac Mini.
When I started using it I noticed that it's much slower in several tasks than my old iMac (when restarting, when opening applications, when working with an app with another appl in the background, etc. etc.). I was concerned about this, but then I asked some friends that have Mac minis and they said that it's normal.
Why? Why a computer with a new i5 Intel processor can be slower than a four years old iMac Core 2 Duo? Is it because of the slow drive (5200 rpm)? Or what is the explanation? If this is normal for the mini, I'll try to fix my old iMac as soon as possible.

Don't downgrade to Lion. For what it's worth, my experience with Lion and Mountain Lion has been almost the exact opposite than what CaptH reported: I find ML to be much faster and more reliable, both on my late-2012 Mini and my mid-2007 iMac.
Your perceived speed issues are almost certainly a result of the slower-spinning hard drive in the Mini as Shootist007 pointed out earlier. Go ahead and disable Spotlight if you want to, but once the indexing is complete (which can take a few hours – or even a few days if you have a lot of data) it shouldn't be a problem unless you are continually connecting different large external drives.
Get the latest Combo Updater and install that. If you have some minor OS issue, that should solve it. Do a normal Software Update /  check the Mac App Store for updates after you install the Combo Updater. Get it here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1640
If you continue to be bugged by the slower speed, see if your local Apple Store will allow you to exchange it and a little extra money for an equivalent model with a Fusion Drive. Or go to Other World Computing and purchase their kit to add a second drive, and use it to add an SSD in the second drive bay:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DIYIMM11D2/
    http://eshop.macsales.com/search/OWC.INSTANT.481.2
Also, RAM is super-duper-uber-cheap right now. If your Mini has only the stock 4gb of RAM, you might be pleasantly surprised by the improved performance by doubling that. I have 16gb in my Mini, it cost me well less than a hundred bucks, and it makes everything better including graphics performance. But if you don't do something to work around that slow 5400rpm hard drive, it will always be the bottleneck in your system.
