New Macbook (should I get one?)

My friend own a PC but is starting to see the light.
so i got him to type out a few question
My friend asks:
Should i save up and buy a macbook at around £700.
Its just that for the same price i could get a pretty amazing spec pc or laptop running windows.
I want to word proces,s play music, surf the web, chat, create and edit videos/pictures.
I want something that can mulitask without freezing up on me. Im running windows xp n had vista for a while n its terrible i hate it.
So yeah just wondering is it worth paying such a high price in comparison to a reasonably low spec mac.
So here is the spec...
2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1GB memory
120GB hard drive
Cheers

You can exceed those specs with a new or refurb MacBook - and the price might be surprising. I'd add new RAM, of course.
What you're paying for is (1) quality/reliability, though an Extended Service plan is mandatory on all computers, if available; (2) extreme ease of use; and (3) usability on all platorms.
Ask your friend to go to an Apple Store to play around with the gear before plunking down the cash. And do consider Refurbs - a great bargain. The new batch should be available soon.

I had to purchase a new MacBook when my old one was stolen.  We have two other MacBooks in the family that use the ITunes library.  How do I get the full ITunes library on the new computer when I don't have access to the old computer?

If your backup copy of the old computer was not stolen, then use it to put everything back.

I got a new Macbook pro in March and transferred all of my old files into the new macbook from my old one. But ever since then, my iPhoto just does not open up. It says 'error' every time I try to open it, but I am still able to attach the iPhotos saved to emails. Help! How do I get my iPhoto back?

    Thanks, Sig.
The old computer is a 2.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
The new one is a 2.3 GHz intel core i7
In going over this, thanks to "tallking it out" with you, I did discover the Text Edit problem.  Because I've still been unable to get the new computer text size (fonts or whatever) to match the old computer, I did not notice that the curser is now different--the line midway down the curser has to be placed on the line I am working upon, otherwise the edits go elsewhere on the page.  Now, with a bit of difficulty, I am able to get Text Edit to work correctly.
If you have any ideas as to why my menu bar and Text Edit type are still so slow, I'd love to have them.
(I went through the process you suggested earlier, re my Trackpad preferences, and found no improvement.)

    I am a bit of a computer/Internet/iTunes dummy....
I am concerned about the health of my current computer but have not yet made the commitment to a new one, but:
    1) How can I transfer my iTunes account to a new computer when I get one...
    and
    2) What can I do if my current computer suddenly implodes and I have not yet 'copied/'saved'/otherwise protected my account, as is? -- I have already had my computer crash once and had one of your people help me restore all of the paid for songs (none of the uploaded from my own collection of CD songs, of course, so I had to spend a long time rebuilding that) -- and I believe I was told you could only help me recover that material one or two times altogether, no?
WithOUT purchasing a Mach or iCloud (I actually think I have one of the later, but rarely have checked it) account, is there anything I can do to responsibly protect my account?
Thanks for any time taken on this!!!

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

You don't need to delete anything from your phone or you old computer.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer or backup to /Music/ on new computer.
If you cannot use the old computer or don't have a backup...
-> Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device
Then immediately make a backup of your new computer.
Get an external drive and plug it in and use -> Time Machine

    Oliver,
Are you getting activation errors? As Ned stated , it is easier to troubleshoot if we have the specific type of error and error detail that you are getting.
Here is some help on activation if this is the issue:

  • What MacBook should I get??

What MacBook should I get? I want a MacBook this year and I know costs but nothing extremely expensive. I usually have 5 - 6 tabs open, listen to a lot of music, play disc games and occasionally photo edit and those sorts of things. But I don't know what MacBook to get because im not a computer savvy person plus there is a lot of choice so any help is greatly appreciated!

There is no answer to your question (that makes sense) since usage - even of the same applications - varies widely.
As a general thought, more memory is happiness. The screen size is a personal preference. Larger is nice, but I find my 13" screen is quite satisfactory.

  • If i buy the new Ipad should i get rid of my cell phone?

If i buy the new Ipad should i get rid of my cell phone?

You can't make calls with iPad; you still need your cell phone.
It's a pain to use 3rd party software to make calls with iPad.

  • Should I get a new Macbook or repair current one?

I recently damaged my computer and brought it in to the genius bar. Was told going to cost $755 to fully repair. $100 to transfer data to a protable hard drive (which he said I have to purchase). I also need a new battery which cost $129. Around $1,000 to get my it back to normal. It's an early 2008 13'' custom Macbook. Should I get it repaired or spent more on a new Macbook Pro?

You can then put your hard drive in an external case to transfer stuff over to the new MacBook Pro. Here's a cheap SATA external hard drive case on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/SATA-Hard-Drive-Case-Enclosure/dp/B001AAVA08/ref=pd_cp_e_0
You can then sell your MacBook for parts on eBay for $100 or so.

If you don’t have the tools to open up the MacBook OWC has a set for $5

  • Did you get a case/sleeve/briefcase for your new MacBook Air? Which One?

I'm wondering what is any case/sleeve/briefcase others bought for their new MacBook Air. I'm in the market, and feeling overwhelmed. If you've bought anything to carry/protect your Air, can you post the make model, and price? thanks!

I had been looking for a case / sleeve for my MBA 11" since I purchased it about two weeks after it was released. Today I re-visited Best Buy and they had a Targus 12" Netbook Slipcase that fits the MBA 11" just about perfectly. The Slipcase is 12.4" x 0.79" x 9.65" on the outside and 11.7" x 1,5" x 8.3" on the inside for the laptop. The MBA slips in the case with no need to squeeze it at all. There is no extra room on the side, but it fits beautifully. The top of the case has only about an extra inch or less. This is the best solution that I have seen thus far. It can be purchased for under $30.

  • Should i get one or not?

I've been thinking of getting a new computer and i've been doing a lot of research lately about the MacBook Pro, mainly just reading forums and reviews about it.
It's going to be my first MAC (i'm excited), but i do have a few worries about the whole thing.
See the thing is, the more i read about it, the more apprehensive i get about getting it. I read about all these problems with whining and screens flickering and heat and fan problems.
My question is, to those who have purchased MBP's, should i get it or not?
Are all these issues truly that bad, or is it the result of people being too demanding and unreasonalble in their complaints?

Well, if i was in the states i probably would be talking on discussion board using my MBP, but im not.
I'm in Kuwait, and thats my main concern, if i do get one and it's defective or has a serious problem, then replacing it or even taking it to the apple store isn't as easy.
Thats why i want to be sure.
It's just that, as one user said before, rarely do people go on discussion boards if the are satisfied with a product, therefore you only get people with problems and complaints. And this bombardment of complaints gets you thinking that everybody with a MBP has had a problem, when in truth there could be thousands out there who have no complaints at all and are more than satisfied, and are simply surfing the web or listing to music or watching a movie or gaming, instead of coming into these discussions.

  • Can't watch Netflix on new Macbook Pro and getting error message.

I recently got a new MacBook Pro and I am new to using Macs. I logged into Netflix and clicked on a movie but I get a message saying "An unknown error has occured". I tried setting up the device or whatever but where am I supposed to get the code? I tried the 6 numbers at the bottom of the site and nothing works. Am I supposed to download Silverlight for Netflix to work on this computer? As I've said before, I do not know anything about Macs and I am not computer savvy and I just need to know how to get Netflix going on this computer. I had searched on Google if Netflix could even be played on a Mac and it's my understanding that one is able to view Netflix on a Mac. Please help. Thanks.

Nevermind I got it working. Not sure if it's possible to delete this thread. Let me know if it is.

  • First Macbook: Should I get the Air or Pro Retina?

I just got accepted to graduate school and wanted to splurge on a new laptop as I have had my Asus laptop for over 6 years and it is PAINFULLY slow.
I will be using it for school but here is my thing:
I dont want to invest in something that is not going to last my 3 years of graduate school.
I thought I was set on buying the Air but then I started to see articles saying the Air is at the end of its time. What do you guys think? Air or Pro Retina? I am completely new to Apple (besides having an iPad) and would like your input!!!

Whether whatever you buy will last you 3 years is going to be largely dependent on what you intend to do with it and how much you want to spend.
The MBP can be substantially more powerful than a MBA. It's also to beef up a MBA to the point that it is more powerful than the low end of the MBP line.
The first question is, what do you need to do? What kind of work? Do you need to run specialized applications? Will you be doing work that involves a lot of heavy lifting? Video editing, heavy photo editing, etc? If not, then the power of one over the other starts to become less of an issue.
How portable do you need it to be? An 11" MBA comes in at just about 2.3 pounds. The 13" is 2.9 pounds. The new MacBook will weigh in at just 2 Pounds.
Do you need (or want) a Retina display? For some, that's a deal breaker. The display on the MBA is good for what it is. I have one. Just bought it in fact. It's a good display. Is it drop dead gorgeous, like a retina display? No, but I don't need that. I was willing to make the trade off to save money and weight.
If you'll be doing standard 'office' type stuff.... MS Office or similar for writing papers, Web for research, email, etc, then any of them would be just fine. The processor in the new MB isn't quite as bad as the early nay-sayers would seem to indicate. Performance tests were largely run on a design from another manufacturer that was defective out of the gate. I believe Apple won't have that problem.
The issue with the new MB (for me) is price. I was able to get a refurbished 11" 2014 MBA for $679. That's almost half the price of the new MB. Don't overlook the deals to be had in the refurb store!

  • What year MacBook should I get

Will a 2007 be good for the basics and such

Of those two, the newer one (first) has more RAM, so it could at
least be able to function OK out of the box. But since both are
older portables, consider these would need a replacement battery
& at least 4GB RAM if you run Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and have
any applications running. Online content, Flash Player, & the like
will drag on the system of either, without hardware upgrades.
Do either one include system DVD for the running OS X included?
At least 90-day money back? Reasonable shipping (free return?)
Have you looked into local sources of computers?
Individuals who may have recently upgraded (bought newer) Macs
and have older ones in a local area. An Apple User group whose own
membership may have a good used product for sale. An independent
Apple trained specialist may know of a fair value in a reliable product
in a trade-in or a repaired item that someone there has for sale.
The macsales.com (OWC) site has a few MacBooks for sale, there
is little doubt of their standing behind the units they offer, for at least
the duration of their worded agreement. And there are others with a
national reputation who offer repaired older computing hardware.
Another whose inventory changes, is wegenermedia.com and price
varies, too; as do options, extras, upgrade over base model, etc.
At a distance, with no local option after ownership, I'd be wary of an
auction site or fast sale on craigslist; but you can get lucky...
I see you asked this question elsewhere, and the same concerns apply.
However in any event I hope you get a reliable unit; esp sight unseen.
The word has been to avoid auction sites, and sources who do not have
a known presence in the industry.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Yoga 2 owners - should I get one?

    Hi (:
I have a question for Yoga 2 OWNERS,
Other than the wifi and screen colors issues that I am aware of, and trust Lenovo to take care of that or replace the HW for these 2 issues,
What do you think about this laptop in general, in a daily use, as a laptop (:
Can you recommend this model for a heavy use for at least 1 year ?
I'm a PC a enthusiast, and I had beautiful laptops in the past, so mid-class built \ keyboard \ trackpad going to hurt me the most, I guess.
Many thanks and enjoy your new computer! (:

Sure Yoga 2 Pro is worth it, you can always calibrate the colors if you like. And WiFi issues are always solvable if there are any.
I would not doubt getting one, there is always still the ThinkPad Yoga.
    Both are great machines.
You should always take complaints with a grain of salt. I am talking from experience with my Yoga 13, plenty of complaints on the internet, but I have never been happier. I have none of the issues!
    Go for it!
