New Macbook, Slow Photoshop

Hi,
I just purchased my macbook pro, and having problems with performance in several programs, when running Photoshop.
i am running CS5, and my macbook has the following information:
Model Name:          MacBook Pro
  Model Identifier:          MacBookPro10,1
  Processor Name:          Intel Core i7
  Processor Speed:          2.6 GHz
  Number of Processors:          1
  Total Number of Cores:          4
L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB
  L3 Cache:          6 MB
  Memory:          8 GB
  Boot ROM Version:          MBP101.00EE.B02
  SMC Version (system):          2.3f32
I was using a Dell Xps 15z before, and had great experience with my PC.
now i changed to Mac, and i am very frustrated, and thinking of returning it.
is there something wrong? or is this Macbook simply not fit to handle photoshop?

Please ignore the distractions in this thread.
First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Brand new Macbook slow to read data DVD's

I jsut got a new macbook today and am installing over 100GB of music software and samples. It is taking forever as you might imagine, but I must say that it is running markedly slower that my 24" iMac, which is totally strange because the have the same exact drive.
Is there something I'm doing wrong? Is there a setting that I could change to optimize my drive speed?? Such as unchecking the box that says "Go very slow?"
I'm not trying to whine. I just find it completely odd that the same drive is taking 3-4 times longer to to the same amount of work in my macbook.
If anybody has any ideas that would be great, thanks!

    Hey Guys,
I have the same odd issue. My "old" MacBook Pro takes about 5-6 hours to install Logic Studio while my brand new iMac takes around a HUGE 12 hours to install the whole thing. Once installed it's fine and fast, but the install is painfully slow.
I still find that 5-6 hours is slow but I a realize that there is around 60Gb to install...
I am almost certain that it all relates to some problems with the not so Super "Super Drives" as there is almost no I/O activity or CPU while the audio files are extracted.

  • After migrating to new Macbook Pro, Photoshop and Bridge constantly Version Cue Crash

I just upgraded to the new MacBook Pro and CS4 crashes any time I try to open a file. "Fatal error - missing component /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Version Cue CS4/Client/4.0.0/VersionCue.framework"  I've read that the best thing to do for that error is to uninstall and reinstall, but my new machine does not have an optical drive, so my old disks don't help much.  Also, I bought CS4 during a limited offer for upgrades to CS1, so I had to call technical support to get it activated, so even if I did manage to reinstall (perhaps by copying my install disks to a USB drive?) I'm expecting to have trouble with reactivating.  Any advice before I start tinkering?

Thanks!  I deactivated it from both the old and new computers, followed the instructions here to copy the install files and it all just worked.
Strangely enough, it did not ask me to reactivate after reinstalling.  It's just working.  It doesn't seem to be upadating properly (I run update, and it comes up with the same 9 updates I just downloaded and applied) but I'll probably be upgrading to CS6 or creative cloud before year's end, so this will do for now.
    Thanks again!

  • New MacBook Air Photoshop CC Problems

I recently bought a 2014 Macbook Air. I own a Mac Pro which I generally use for Adobe CC, but I wanted something I could do light work on portably. As soon as I started working on Photoshop things were going crazy. The images started distorting, backgrounds would show my computer background instead of the default white background on photoshop, and the paint brush tools were pixelated. I don't know what is going on, and any help would be appreciated, as I have never had these kind of problems on my mac pro.

Go through the GPU troubleshooting steps in this document.

My thought is that the GPU shares the main memory and I'm thinking 4 GB is very sparse. Can you at least bump it up to 8 or 16 GB?

  • 4Gb of RAM, new Macbook, still slow as my old g4?

Just bought a new Macbook - 4Gb of RAM - have a few apps running and everything is sooooo sloooowwwww. Clicking on an app in the dock, bounces for at least 15 seconds, then opens. Clicking on a Firefox tab, beachballs, then finally loads to webpage.
Is there something wrong with my computer? I have ~20Gb of free HD space, only 4-5 apps running, and it's as slow as my old MDD g4 - if not slower. Bridge CS4 is a total dog, almost unusable. Also takes 8-9 minutes to start from a fresh boot, loads the finder, I can see my desktop then just hangs.
I repaired perms/disk from the Leopard disc that came with it - anything else I can do? PRAM? Anything? Thinking about reformatting, wanted to try somet other things first.
    Thanks

500Gb is not uncommon especially when working with large prints, and/or scans in 16Bit mode (16 bits per channel in RGB versus 8 bits). Also with hi-res panoramas that have been stitched together in Photoshop.
I work in a commercial photography studio - often we have files that we have shot in multiple frames with a 4x5 film back - in camera raw - meaning we have for example 9 RAW files all shot in wide gamut 16Bit - that we then have Photoshop stitich together and blend - but we like to leave the layers and masks intact for future editing. We produce these for clients that might be going up to full poster size from one photoshop file - and sometimes even push the 1Gb range on some files.
It's the combination of hi-res and the 16Bit color depth that usually pushes the limits of these files. Also once you start adding text and adjustment layers, smart objects, etc they can really get up there.

  • How do I transfer my LR4 and Photoshop to my new MacBook?

My MacBook Pro Mid 2009 is so slow when trying to edit photos taken with my D800!  I have finally decided to get a new MacBook buy wondering how I can get LR4 and all its catalogues on my new computer.  I also need to know how to get my current version of Photoshop,

  • Super Slow opengl on new MacBook... any ideas why?

Hi. I just ran some Xbench benchmark tests on my brand new MacBook and, while the machine dominated even slightly older MacBooks (according to a comparison of others who ran the software) in almost every category, it completely tanked in the OpenGL tests. Like, tanked so bad I was posting scores that were 1/20 the other MacBooks.
Because of this I ran some other benchmarks (Photoshop, this time... nothing to do with Xbench) and I got slaughtered again. My times were significantly lower than other MacBooks. What do the collective "you" think could be going on?
I know how to tweak my machine for performance gains and I can outscore most other MacBooks in just about every benchmark category... except for this OpenGL thing and it is waaaaaaay off. I'm not trying to "win" and having a slightly slower machine wouldn't bug me at all, I just this is so far off I think something is seriously wrong! Hjelp!

It was pointed out to me that Xbench may not be very accurate. I have noticed good speed results for the new MacBook at barefeats.com (specifically http://barefeats.com/mbook2.html ) and since ALL of the MacBooks (only the model 3,1) scored consistently poor on only the Xbench OpenGL tests, perhaps the OpenGL test is inaccurate.
It still bugs me but until I have another way of testing OpenGL to see how it performs under a different set of tests, I guess it's hard to know what to think.

  • My new Macbook 1,83 Ghz  Slower  than old Ibook 933Mhz ---!!??

I really don't get it - Am I missing something??
I'm running exactly the same applications as I used to on a G4 Ibook 933mhz, and I'm using my new Macbook the same way.
Programes are opening slower, windows are are closing slower, it takes forever to open Photoshop...and don't event hink about opening another programme at the same time...
I read previous post and checked the following:
    I did a test with Xbench ( score of 112 )
I doubt that more Ram will really solve the issue I will try...
It's slow weither the Computer is Hot or Cold.
the Widgets running are : Postit - Weather - date - Calculator.
    Any idea ?
I bought it last week - I might return it if this is not solved.
    Thanks for any feedback..
    Dave

After purchasing the blackbook, i compared its performance to a G4 1.44GHz notebook to see if there was a significant improvement. I made sure to put the stock 512MB of RAM back into it to match the ibook to keep from having an unfair advantage. the macbook right off the bat booted much faster than the ibook. file selection and application loading was a bit different, because as Mr. Tirta said, Rosetta can account for the delay in performance. But this is actually an unfair advantage on the part of the PPC unit, since all of the applications are in an optimal environment without the need of an emulation layer like the macbook. All things being equal(native apps for both units) the macbook would fly compared to the ibook. if you run the upcoming CS3, which will be a UB app, it will get a significant jump over the previous powerpc hardware. so its not your macbook thats slower than the powerbook, its your applications running in a non-compatible environment through translation.

  • Logic error-hard drive too slow or system overload (new macbook!)

have made a few short tracks with logic with no probs. when i have tried to play the demo songs which have many tracks, i get an error msg saying hd too slow or system overload. i have a new macbook, 2.4, 2mb ram, 250 gb hd (with loads space left). airport turned off when using logic. what gives???

Samples that I am using are located on a 7200 external HD.
Is your external formatted for Mac? If you didn't buy it from a store that sells mac drives specifically, it's probably formatted for windows. You must reformat for Mac or you'll have a lot of performance issues.
    I've a Macbook 2,2 Ghz Core 2 DUO with 2Go of RAM.
You should get more Ram, it's really cheap these days.
Airport is disconnected. My AUdio Buffer is 1024 in the Logic preferences.
Make sure the I/O Safety Buffer is OFF, and then set the buffer size at 256 or 512.

  • ITunes downloads fast on old Mac mini but slow on brand new Macbook Pro on the same WiFi network?

    Hi all,
I have an old Mac mini that's from around 2008 and runs on Snow Leopard. I also have a brand new Macbook Pro with retina display that's running Mountain Lion. Both running iTunes 10.6.3.
I never noticed anything wrong with my MBP's connection speed until last night when I downloaded a free TV episode from iTunes. The download speed varied between 20KB/s and 40KB/s and it took me 7 to 8 hours to download a single episode. I checked my internet connection but there was nothing wrong with it, SpeedTest.net told me I had a download speed of 94MB/s and upload speed of 80MB/s, it was only iTunes that was unbearably slow.
Today I was browsing iTunes again and was planning to buy some movies, but again it took forever for the trailers to download. So I fired up my Mac mini just to see if it would be just as slow. Turned out my Mac mini could download the same trailers from iTunes at a much higher speed than my MBP (around 3MB/s on the ones I tested).
So what gives? They are on the same Wifi network provided by an Airport Extreme, and although my iPhone and iPad are also connected to it, no one else is doing any heavy duty downloading.
    Thanks in advance!

If your serial number is listed as being valid at http://www.adobe.com/ then I would recommend obtaining a fresh copy of the installation files.  You can find details on how to locate your serial number at Find your serial number quickly - http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/find-serial-number.html.
To download a fresh copy of the installation files please see Download CS6 products.
