New Macbook video import problem.

Hi all,
I have just gone and bought myself a new Macbook Pro and I am very pleased with it. From a video standpoint I plan to use it to import and edit HD video from my Canon HV20. The new Macbook only has a Firewire 800 port and so the cable that I would normally use to connect computer and camcorder will not work as it is 'mini' Firewire to Firewire 400. I am assuming that there is/will be a 'mini' to FW800 cable available, but in the interim I am using a Firewire hub that is connected to the Macbook by a 400-800 cable. And herein lies my problem ! Although iMovie8 detects my HV20, it will not display or play or import any footage from the tape ! It just remains on the blue import screen and although the camcorder is merrily 'playing', no footage is actually making it across to the computer. I think the issue is the Firewire hub part of the connection but I thought it best to garner an opinion from users of this forum. Help !!
Many thanks in advance, kroguk
PS
I will also post this on the Macbook forum, so apologies if you see this post twice

Well, I can't find my Belkin FW800-to-4-pin (9-pin-to-4-pin) cable right now ..I'm doing some "tidying up" ..which is always hopeless for finding things afterwards!.. but I DID buy the other day - in the German Mac specialists, erm, can't remember the name - a Sonnet Fast-something (..which I've just put down, and now can't find..) teeny 9-pin-to-6-pin adapter (..so small that I can't find it!..) and I've just tested that with a Sony HC1 HDV camcorder.
Using the Sonnet adaptor..
..which is mentioned on their website at top-left here: http://www.sonnettech.com/product/adapters/index.html ..on a normal 6-pin-to-4-pin FireWire cable.. I just connected my camcorder and successfully imported HDV from the Sony.
I tested it twice with iMovie HD 6, in the most adverse conditions: 1; connecting to the 9-pin FW800 socket on a G4 17" laptop (..which is generally too slow to import HDV in real-time..) and 2; looped ("daisy-chained") through the 9-pin FW800 sockets (..one socket from the drive to my Mac, the other socket from the drive to the camcorder..) of an external iOmega FireWire drive connected to my Quad G5 Mac, also with iMovie HD 6. Both imports worked perfectly.
I'm also trying it as I write this - I just found the adapter again! - to import into iMovie '08 on the G5, daisy-chained through the external disc (..the G4 is too old or underpowered to run iMovie '08..) and that works as well ..though I did have to "kick" the program into starting a new Event; at first the camera transport ran, but no video imported, so I just Stopped and re-imported.
I bought this adaptor "on spec", as no previous device or adapter had worked properly for me (..converting between 4-pin on a camcorder and 9-pin on a Mac..) and this is the first to have worked, for me. But I have great faith in Sonnet, as they make the extra S-ATA driver card and other bits and bobs which I put in my floorstander G5, and that all "just works".
Ah; the shop where I bought it is ..hold on a moment.. the "m store" in Munich. (Karsten may know them: when Gravis moved from Lindwurmstrasse to Im Tal, the m store opened up right next door to where Gravis had been before) and they're at Lindwurmstrasse 5a, their phone number - they speak English, too - is 0049 89 24 22 35 24 and their website is ..aaaarggh; they don't seem to have one.
Anyway; the Sonnet SimplyFast FireWire 400-to-800 Adapter works perfectly - for me - on the end of a normal 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire 400 cable, and importing works flawlessly every way I've tried it ..even daisy-chained through an external drive.
I can heartily recommend it.
But - as always - "your mileage may vary" ..meaning that it might not work so smoothly for you.

I am trying to import videos to my macbook from my video camera in .mpg format (which i have done hundreds of times) and for some reason the audio will not play on the videos. The video imports fine except for no sound. I have no idea why this is doing this. It worked previously today but now it will not play any sound in the videos i import.

  • Aperture Video Import Problem - from Lumix GH4: Imported clips have their dates changed to the import date.  The files show up on the hard drive but many are not showing up in Aperture.

Aperture Video Import Problem - from Lumix GH4: Imported clips have their dates changed to the import date.  The files show up on the hard drive with import date not created date, but many of these same files are not showing up in Aperture. Sometimes the clips actually show up with the current import but take on the video information from a previously imported file.

It was suggested I move this question to IPhoto or IMovie which I did.
Well moving to a different discussion group did not provide an answer to this question either. But what I finally did was import one batch of photos and videos into IPhoto for a given day at a time. Working with these I could change the date and times in order to get them in the original sequench taken. Then I would create an album with that batch. These would all be on the same day (IMove was closed for this phase). Then I would open IMovie, generate the thumbnails for that album, and select the album I had created. This was necessary because the importing process in IPhoto was using incorrect dates for my video so it was a real struggle finding them in IMove until I developed this approach.
I believe that this whole process was so screwy because I was importing from an external hard drive not a camera. I had these photos on a PC and did not have the original cameras to use to import directly which I am fairly sure would have made this easier!

  • Time Machine and New Macbook, old iBook problem.

Hi there. I was using a G4 iBook until about 1 month ago. I had been backing it up with time machine. I then bought a new computer. Upon start up, I used time machine to move my applications and files over to the new Macbook. Everything has been dandy with the new Macbook.
Today I tried to back up the Macbook using time machine but it appeared to freeze about halfway through. I investigated the boards for advice. Since my iBook was a Power PC and the new Macbook is an Intel computer, I understand that I needed to reformat the external hard drive. Okay, I did that. I then tried to run a backup but it again froze, after only 60 MBs of 37 GBs. When I try opening the external hard drive I notice that it still refers to my computer as my iBook rather than the Macbook. Does this explain the problem and if so, how can I rename my computer to reflect the change? I don't get it.

To the extent that Time Machine uses a computer's "name" in naming its backup files, that could be the explanation.
Have you renamed your MacBook to see if that helps?

  • IPhone new MacBook Pro syncing problem

I asked this question in the iTunes section but got no response, so I thought I'd try here. Any suggestions?
I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro and finally got my itunes library transferred. I went to sync my iPhone, but it says that there are some songs that won't download because my computer wasn't authorized. So I did the authorization and it said it was already authorized. I finally noticed that the login email was an old, old email address. What do I do now? I didn't have this problem in my old MacBook Pro, and I don't have that old email's password. Any ideas?

    You're welcome.
You can change your account info including the email address per this link.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1918
But you must know the password for your iTunes account which can be different from the password used with the email account/address used as the user name for your iTunes account. You don't need to be using the email account/address to reset or change the password for your iTunes account to change other info, but you must know the answers to the security questions chosen when you first created your iTunes account with the chosen email address.
This is done with this link which you must do first. Just follow the prompts.

  • Want to get a new Macbook and import audio through USB? Look here.

FWIW, as I was reading many of these posts, a lot of folks are suggesting that you NEED firewire for audio interfaces. Here is a link to twenty (USB) audio interfaces and that is just at one site. I myself record hi end audio for film using a M-Audio Fast Track Ultra (8 in and 8 outs) along with Logic and Final Cut Pro. Firewire is great, can have less latency, and a lot of users still have gear. I won't get into that debate, it's been beat to death. Just wanted to be accurate to any budding musicians, etc. who might be scared off by all this talk re: Firewire a necessity for pro audio. Latency (a problem 'sometimes' associated with USB devises transferring slower data) is old news. Technology has come a long way since the days of a USB 1.0 MBox. Get a new Macbook, a good audio interface, write a great song and you're in business -- all in style with your new sexy MB. Here's the link: http://www.sweetwater.com/c695--USBAudioInterfaces

I'd still beg to differ, and I would hazard a guess that most people who work in Audio would agree that firewire interfaces are as a general rule of thumb, far superior. Now a reason that I'm not too inclined to recommend M-Audio is because I had an M-Audio USB interface, and it was nothing but trouble, pops clicks, dropouts, high on the CPU, it would reset the USB bus and cause crashes, often forcing me to reboot mid session. Plus the MIDI interface never did work!
I hope they've cleaned up their act since then, and I guess if you can get work done on your interface that they must have done.
I do find it odd though that the company who Apple partnered with to release some audio interfaces that work seamlessly with Garageband and Logic chose firewire, so if you buy a new macbook and want to use the interface that Apple recommends to use with garageband you can't.
Now one of the reasons I have a macbook, is that last year my iBook died, and I needed a new notebook to go with my MOTU interface, I could just about have stretched my budget to a MBP, but seeing as they used the Lucent (Agere) firewire chipset, there was a strong chance that any decent firewire interface wouldn't work with it, and I've heard that the new MBP uses the Lucent chipset, rather than the more dependable TI one, so there's a chance that professional audio may have to skip this whole generation of notebook refreshes, that is until Apple start using a decent chipset again.
And I'm sorry, the argument that Pros would only use the Pro machine seems a little naive (see above reason), sometimes portability is a pre-requisite for a persons needs, the portability that say the old 12" Powerbook had, which many still miss. Plus as far as portability goes many firewire multi channel interfaces are bus powered, something that AFAIK you can't get with USB.
But all audio interface disagreements aside, one thing that USB does not have, and I don't think could have, is DSP, like the SSL Duende, the TC Powercore, the Focusrite Liquidmix. All three which come in a variety of flavours, including the less powerful, but more price friendly variety, perfect for end users who want a bit of class but without paying the earth.

  • New Photo/Video Import Lost Due to Power Cut - Any Ideas?

I am using OS X 10.9.1, and iPhoto '08, V7.1.5.  My iMac was in the closing stages of a photo/video import from my iPhone 5 when a power cut occured.  I had thought the photos would already be in the new album that I'd just created because I had just been asked the question Keep or Delete Original Photos (I  responded DELETE).  When I restarted after the power cut, the new iPhoto album contained nothing at all, and 80% of the originals had been deleted off my iPhone.  I have tried looking in the main iPhoto library and Last Import folder with no joy.  Is there anythig else that I can try please?

Quick update to say that I found them!  I convinced myself that when the power cut occured, there's no way that a few GB of media could be instantly deleted, and thus they must be somewhere on the HD.......similar to data getting stored in a TEMP folder on a PC.  I managed to access the main LIBRARY folder via Finder >> GO >> OPTION KEY and then did a search for one of the photo numbers that I knew was missing. Amazingly found it together with all the other 588 missing photos & movies buried in a folder called 26Dec2013_2 (strange considering this happened on 01Jan2014 and all the photos/media were from the period 27Dec to 01Jan).  Note that my earlier search of the entire iPhoto Library package had also proved fruitless. Not sure where that folder was actually residing, but I copied the entire contents to my Desktop and then imported them into iPhoto.  In short, I am so happy!  Lesson learned about the dangers of power cuts, especially living in a city short on energy.  I will not do that again.  Hope this helps someone else sometime in the future. Thanks.

  • New macbook, iPhoto import stopping

i have a new macbook pro, just got it yesterday and there is nothing on it yet. Every time i plug my iPhone into it to import the photos, it imports everything until about halfway and then it stops. and it just stays on that one picture. I've forced closed the app and relaunched it to try again many times but it keeps doing the same thing. how do i get it to actually finish the import????

If you're legally entitled, the App Store will offer the latest update and install it for free. In Lion and Mountain Lion, you need iLife '11 as the previous versions are incompatible. The update does not affect the all important iPhoto library containing your graphic treasures. Latest iPhoto '11 version is 9.3.2 (670.63). • Video import problem from iphone5 to PC giving error

    Hi evereyone,
I have iphone 5. I try to import my videos but am not able to import all, its giving error. I tried also using windows live photo still same prob. the imported videos have problem in playing. I tried with vlc, quick time, the frames are broken and audio video lag. Please help me how i can import all and rum smoothly.

Every time I plug my iphone 5 into the laptop (using windows 7) the easiest way is to right click on the portable device (iphone icon) and import to my pictures, BUT every time I do this it wants to import ALL photos and videos.
And when you do this, it should ask if you want to import the pictures that have already been imported. Select No.
Then, after you import, the photos should be deleted from the Camera Roll.
After the photos are imported and deleted from the Camera Roll, you can import using iTunes, only the photos you want on the iPhone.

  • New Macbook + 320gb WD = Problem

    Hi,
i just got the new macbook 2ghz and bought a 320gb WD 5400/min hard drive.
It works just fine except for the fact that it makes a sound every 5 - 30sec when the hdd is not in use.
    "clack" ... 5 sec ... "clack" ... 30 sec ... "clack" ... 10 sec ... "clack" ...
when it is in use there is no problem.
i am worried that the drive will be damaged after a while...
whats the problem? maybe there is a problem with the power supply? can someone help me?
    thanks
    Romekk

ok, this seems to be the idle-click problem many mb users have got after changing the hard drive.
but i managed to solve the problem, i just followed some instructions, used a hdapm tool and the osx terminal.
the instructions are in german, maybe someone will need them here, so i post the link:
    http://www.macuser.de/forum/showthread.php?t=315459
it really worked for me, no more clack sounds, done in 5-10min...

  • New macbook with pixel problem

I purchased a new macbook and this was my first. I switched from PC to Mac . I have to say I am a little disappointed. I got one burned pixel that doesn't work, warranty doesn't cover this (since it's only one) and there is no compensation for that. It's not a biggy, but it is annoying sometimes when you notice it. Especially that it is in the Dock bar.
Just wanted to share this with others. In case you are thinking of buying a Macbook be aware of this issue.
    Cheers!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, klassikgirl
Having tried all the suggestions on the boards, I think you should take it back to the retailer and exchange it for one that works. The problem cannot get better with time, and a same day exchange for a non-functional Mac should be no problem.

  • New Macbook Air - graphics problem

New mid 2011 Macbook Air with Intel HD300 graphics card
Seems to be a problem with brushes in photo editing software. Brushes don't render correctly on screen at certain sizes.
Problems experienced in Aperture, Photoshop and Lightroom.
No problems at all with this software on my 2009 MBA or MBP runnining Lion10.7.1
Problem is just on this new Macbook Air
Any advice or solution much appreciated

Problem still there is 10.7.2. No work around. It makes using Photoshop on a MB Air very difficult. On the Photoshop.com forum (Adobe), they are blaming Apple the the graphics drivers, and disavowing any resposibility.

  • Video Import problems

    Hi Everyone,
I wonder if someone could advise about a problem? We have a
number of video clips from a client in WMV format and wish to
import into Flash 8. We did this without any problems and created
the flv files using the video import wizard. The client however
wanted us not to include the audio as is was really just background
factory noise. During the video import steps - Encoding, I selected
'Show Advanced Settings' and unticked 'Encode Audio'
Now however the video doesn't import at all and an empty
SWF/flv file is produced. Am I doing something incorrectly or is
there a better way to 'remove' the audio?
    Any advice greatly appreciated
    Many thanks
    Dave

    Hi christopher,
If the video is large, iPhoto has a problem importing it sometimes.
My camera can take large size videos so I import all my images and video clips with Image Capture. I put all the images in a dated folder ready for backup and also import them into iPhoto.
I put all my video clips in dated folders and keep them in my Movies folder to use for projects in iMovie and iDVD and they are also easier to backup this way.
