NEW Macbook with random RESTART! HELP!

This is my second attempt to post as I had my 3rd random restart while typing!
I have a week 36 MB. I waited to get my very 1st MAC until the last day of the free ipod deal...hoping I would get the MB that had been freed of the shutdown problems. Can someone please advise this newbie on what could be the problem? Do I start with calling applecare or just make an appt. at genius bar?
Also, read in an old post that temp. might be the problem. I have only heard my fan come on once since i had this thing and it was befor I was experiencing my restarts. How do I check the operating temp. and what is considered too high?
Thanks for any help!!!

To check the temperature, do a Google search for "coreduotemp". Temperatures are subjective -- everyone's runs a bit different. Apple won't say anything about it. Intel has documentation that says the processor itself is OK up to 100'C. Personally, when my MacBook started RSD'ing, the temp wasn't any higher than normal.
I'd follow kjk's advice and either give Apple a call or make an appt at your local Genius bar.
RSD is a known issue and I'd be very surprised if the Genii (and the people at Apple's repair depots) can't replace heatsinks with their eyes closed by now.

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan. Remove it as follows.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. These instructions are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
    Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the Internet criminal behind VSearch has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

I have a similar problem: I switched from mac mail to Outlook 2011 as the default client, and want to switch back. Mailto links (eg from browser etc) default to Mail.  However, when I try to email a Word document as an attachment, it continues to open Outlook.  Outlook has a button in its prefs for making it the default client, but I don't see a way to turn this pref off in either Outlook or in Word.

  • After restoring backup new macbook with time machine Firefox will not start. says missing profile

after restoring backup on new macbook with time machine Firefox will n to start. It says it is missing profile although profile exists and profile manager will not start. Also reinstalling does not help. Direct after starting Firefox it says profile is missing and then quits Firefox. Please help edit

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • Am I worth to wait for the new macbooks with snow leopard?

As the day Apple released the new macbook pro 17. I was considering about If I need to wait for the all macbooks with the new operating system. Because I just heard that Snow leopard will come with a 64 bit. But now leopard just is with 32 bit. Some of people said new macbooks with snow leopard will be different from the old models(2008 late), even the macbook pro 17 2009. Can someone help me? Thanks a lot.

I think if you need a new laptop you can take the plunge. If you have a look on the apple website on the SL page you will note the following text near the bottom:
+Benchmark based on the SunSpider JavaScript Performance test on a 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo-based iMac with Mac OS X Snow Leopard and 2GB of RAM.+
That's the sort of specs for a machine that would run the OS well...I think the new 17" MB Pro is well within that ballpark.

I am having trouble with permissions in viewing my old hard drive, when I save a permission when I reboot the full access is changed again .  What is the best way to get complete access to my old hd installed in my new Macbook?

Open the Get Info window for the old drive. Click the Lock icon on the bottom of that window and type in your password. In the permissions area click the Plus sign ( + ) and Add your Username to it and set it to Read & Write. Close that window. you should now have full access to all the files.

  • How can I use a firewire hard drive on a new Macbook with one USB-C only?

How can I use a firewire hard drive on a new MacBook with only one USB-C?

kaz-k is correct about FireWire not being supported by any possible connector or adaptor to USB-C and never will.  However, there is no such thing as a FireWire Hard Drive.  There are only SATA (or if it is a really old one, ATA,) drives in a FireWire enclosure.  If you can remove the drive from the case/enclosure - bust it open somehow if it is a glued-up unit - then the drive can be placed into a regular USB3 enclosure. Then it can connect to the new MacBook via any one of the adaptors Apple sells.

When I go to europe and head back to the states I can go to customs at their airport i.e france, italy or germany and get VAT refund for all the purchases I made. It does not work the other way around. purchase in the US heading back to europe as far as I know but you can ask US customs at the airport if they do such thing, just make sure you have copies of your receipts.

  • MacBook Pro randomly restarting since upgrading to Mavericks. Help!

Ever since I downloaded Mavericks, my 2010 MacBook Pro is randomly restarting due to a GPU panic. I tried all the trouble shooting suggested by apple support via telephone (updating software, reinstalling mavericks, repairing disks). It is still restarting 4-5 times a day at least. I read it could be an issue with my model of MacBook, but it has been more than 3 years since I purchased it (almost 4 years). It never restarted when I was running 10.6. Why would it all of a sudden start doing this? Anyone have any luck with them replacing the hardware for free even though it was past the 3 years? Please help! I can't downgrade my operating system, as I need to run Lightroom 5 and it is not compatible with 10.6. Thank you!

    tccsp11,
yes, sinve you’re getting GPU panics, your MacBook Pro is probably suffering from the defect described here. It’s a hardware defect, so the problem was always latent; one possible reason for it starting under Mavericks is that perhaps Mavericks switches to the NVIDIA GPU to perform some tasks (for better performance) that Snow Leopard didn’t switch for. One person reported that he was able to get the servicing done gratis, but he lives in Singapore, so I don’t know if e.g. Singapore consumer protection law played any part in that. If you need to run Lightroom 5, then it sounds as though you’re going to need to confirm whether your NVIDIA GPU has the defect or not, so you might as well make an appointment at your closest Apple store to have them run their Video System Test on your MacBook Pro.

  • New retina macbook pro randomly restarting?

    Hi, all,
I just bought the new retina-display macbook pro.
    And this laptop is amazing!
but sometimes it has to RANDOMLY restart. It restarts when I'm using it, while it is asleep, or sometimes even when i try to shut it down.\
    Anyone has the same problem?
    Rain

That behavior means that your Mac is crashing. Several things can cause a crash, like a defect in manufacturing, but usually... USUALLY... this happens to people running software that didn't come with their Mac that isn't compatible with the operating system. Some antivirus programs cause this, and the older version of the Chrome Browser caused a lot of problems for people, too.
If you haven't installed questionable software or imported old settings on to your new Mac, and it's behaving this way anyway, there is something wrong with your Mac and you should return it. You are covered under warranty, and if you have good customer service you may be able to get it replaced.

  • Macbook Pro randomly restarting since installing Mavericks

    Hi guys,
I've got a mid-2010 Macbook Pro. Since I installed Mavericks, about 6 months ago, it's started restarting at random (it just goes black and then goes through the reboot cycle. Sometimes it can happen a few times in the same hour - sometimes once a week. It doesn't seem related to what programs I have open or how hot it is running. It often happens a few minutes after the machine has awoken from sleep, but this isn't always the case.
I was convinced that this was due to the faulty nVidia chip which was included in some mid-2010 MBPs so I took it to the Apple genius bar and showed them this KB article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088 (having first done a clean install of OSX).
They ran "VST (Video System Test) 1.0.3v5 for Macbook Pro (15-inch, mid-2010)" and it passed. They then took the laptop into the back room and "ran some more hardware tests", all of which passed too.
I bought the machine back to my house and started reinstalling software. About 10 minutes ago it restarted itself again (with the same GPU panic message and GPUPanic.cpp:127 line). The only difference between this restart and those before I reinstalled Mavericks is that the previous restarts would be proceeded by a "your computer needs to restart because of a problem" whereas just now no message was displayed until the computer fully rebooted, and then a "your computer was rebooted because of an issue" message was displayed.
I've only installed a few pieces of software, and nothing that I thought would mess with the graphics drivers.
Could anyone please take a look at my logs and see if anything looks amiss? The genius has stressed that it cannot be hardware related so hopefully somebody will spot something.
The only other thing perhaps worth mentioning is that I have 3rd party RAM and a 3rd party SSD harddrive in there. Could either of these be responsible?
    Thanks,
    Joe

I just wanted to share my experiences with Apple recently.
To give some background: my mid-2010 Macbook Pro started restarting randomly after I upgraded to Mavericks and the logs indicated that it was the GPU issue. I am currently residing in Dublin so my nearest Apple store is over 100 miles away in Belfast (a 2-3 hour drive or train journey).
I first took the machine to the Apple store on the 8th March, having first made an appointment at the Genius Bar. I had entered details of the issue into the concierge system and the Genius seemed to know what he was dealing with. He ran the GPU test - which it promptly passed - but, after this point, I didn't see the Genius again as he disappeared into a back room, never to return.
About 20 minutes later (as I was beginning to get annoyed) someone else came and asked if I was being helped. I explained the situation to him and he hurriedly offered to "take it in the back to run further tests". I agreed and left the machine with him - but in all the kerfuffle I left my charger behind.
I went back and collected my laptop as the store was closing. I briefly discussed the test results with a different Genius, who suggested that it must be a software issue. He said that - as I had restored the OS to factory settings before the visit - it was most probably fixed. Given that it had not restarted since I restored the machine (the night before), I agreed and left.
Unfortunately, I didn't realise that I'd forgotten my charger until I got home. I called the store the next day but was told that it's "not Apple policy" to post things out and that if I wanted the charger I'd have to collect it from the store myself. I was then told that it would probably be better for me to "just buy a new one" given the distance involved!
Anyway, the next day I was reinstalling some software and the machine restarted again. I made a post on here and was told that the logs still suggested a faulty GPU, and that the Genius should have spotted it.
So I made another trip to Belfast!
First, I tried to collect my charger. After some crossed wire between staff members, it turned out that someone had labelled my charger and left it on the side for me to collect, but then someone else had then thrown it away. To Apple's credit, however, they gave me a new one off the shelf without hesitation.
Next, the Genius ran the same test again and this time it failed. I asked the Genius why it would be the case that the EXACT same test would pass one day and fail the next but he didn't have any ideas. It is *my* theory that the test not only checks the GPU itself, but also looks in the log folder for logs that indicate a faulty GPU and that, by restoring the OS before I took it in, I effectively "cleared" this folder and made it impossible to detect.
Anyway, he next mentioned that it was out of warranty and that I would need to pay for a repair. However, I had a printout from the trading standards site which outlined the Sale of Goods act and how (under UK law) we are protected for 6 years from purchase if a product is defective. He spoke to a couple of managers and agreed to replace the motherboard without charge.
Next, he wanted proof that I'd purchased the machine directly from the Apple website, as apparently their records only go back 18 months (!). Unfortunately, I lost some emails a couple of years back and no longer had the receipt but - after another discussion with managers - he agreed to proceed anyway.
He then said that I would have to come and collect the machine in a few days. The trading standards guidelines say that the RETAILER is responsible for arranging collection and delivery of the faulty product so I asked whether they could ship it to Dublin. However, he argued that to do this I would have to rearrange everything through AppleCare and have them collect/deliver the machine. So, having gotten this far (and not wanting them to change their minds), I just agreed.
Anyway, I received an email saying that it was ready a few days later so I went back to Belfast again and collected it. So far (touch wood) it's been working perfectly and without a single restart.
    So, the things to remember:
    1) The test may not detect the issue the first time but that doesn't mean it's not there
    2) Restoring OSX to factory settings MAY impede the ability for the test to detect the issue
    3) It doesn't matter if you're out of warranty if you're covered by Consumer Law (check out the law in your country)
    4) Don't leave your charger in the Apple store!
NB: I'm not a lawyer, of course, and none of this constitutes legal advice; I'm just hoping it will help some people as there seem to be a LOT of folks having this issue.
