New MacBookPro 13" (early 2011) not properly displaying 1920x1200 on an external display

Hi,
A week ago I got a new MacBookPro 13". Early 2011 model, the ones that now come with an Intel HD Graphics 3000 video card. I am connecting it to a Sun 24.1" LCD Monitor v4 (http://www.oracle.com/us/products/servers-storage/desktop-workstations/030743.ht m) through a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter. Supposedly the Sun monitor is running at 1920x1200 @ 60hz (with the MacBookPro at its original resolution of 1280x800).
The problem is that the image on the Sun monitor is not using the whole screen. The MacOs is 10.6.7 and I have downloaded all updates as of today (June 13 2011). I am *not* mirroring displays, of course.
Now, for the record, I still have my old MacBook 13", which the new one was supposed to replace and this problem is *not* present. 1920x1200 on the external Sun display uses all the screen. That laptop has an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M video card. Its MacOS is also 10.6.7, with all software updates as of today.
My current suspicion is the new MBP is somehow trying to force the aspect ratio of the external display to be that one of HD, but it is only a suspicion. Any help with this please? Is something known? Is it a feature or a defect of my laptop and I should try to get another one? If it is a feature, does it mean that I will not be able to fully use any of the three 24.1" Sun monitors that I have? (one at home, one on each of my two offices?)
Thanks...
Manuel

For some reason, using a dvi adapter instead of a vga one works fine.

Is macbook pro 13inch early 2011 compatible with 1tb samsung evo 840 or 512gb samsung evo pro 840?
    Thank you.

    romdogg,
I have a 512 GB Samsung 840 PRO in my 13-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro, and it’s perfectly compatible. Since you have an Early 2011 model, it would run even better in yours, since your MacBook Pro supports SATA III burst throughput, while mine only supports SATA II.

  • Not allowed to play movie, an external display is detected (Q1544)

I'm getting this message on my I-pad 2 while using my Uverse app
"Not allowed to play movie, an external display is detected (Q1544).
There is no problem using the Netflix app.

There isn't a workaround, if you get that message then the provider has blocked using Airplay or an external monitor. Contact Uverse and ask them to remove the block.

I have new Macbook pro 13" 320 MB type early 2011. Almost everytime I use with Safari using wifi. The system crash and require me to shut down the computer and restart it. It's brand new but is annoying, could anyone help? (I've update the OS already but the problem still persist)

    Hi Joseph,
In many cases that I remember, It will always crash whenever I open and download (not so many) youtube video. Compare to my Fujitsu that I used side by side, the MBP tends to search connection more often (I monitored the airport activity), does it have anything to do with it ?
Thanks for your advise man, I'll working on it.

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011) not staring up at all

    Hi Everyone,
I have MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011). Since couple of weeks my Mac suddenly shuts down, when I try to restart it again I am not getting any response, no fan voice, no screen start up, no lights nothing. I read couple of blogs and found that in such situations we should check the battery by pressing the side button however no light flashes there. Since two weeks I am observing that sometimes after 3-4 days when I try to switch on my mac it works perfectly fine and after using it for 1-2 days it again unexpectedly shuts down and if I try to switch on it just after this it is not responding at all. When it is dead and I connect charger to my mac I see only dim green light which is unusual. When it is working and I connect the charger I see the green light as it was before.
I had also given my mac to Authorized Service Center for repair, they have already reset SMC, PRAM, however my issue isn’t resolved. I told them that this is happening again and again, they are saying that we have checked everything and there are no hardware issues, probably we need to format the entire mac.
Looking at the problem I described, do you guys have any suggestion? Formatting my mac is the solution or there is a hardware issue?
    Please suggest.
    Thanks!

You can install OS X on a external drive, boot from it and test it and rule out the possibility of software being the cause.

  • Macbook Pro(Early 2011) not turning on; Flashing Orange Light on Charger

So yesterday, I did a teardown of my Macbook pro (early 2011) in an effort to clean the keyboard because some keys weren't working. I used rubbing alcohol and As I was putting the keyboard and trackpad connectors back in, I heard the computer making a startup/shut down noise so; I realized I neglected to unplug the battery - out of fear of shock and impulse, I unplugged the battery quickly. The computer shut off and, ever since then, my computer won't turn on. When I plug in the charger; it initially gives me a very faint green light, and when I hold on the power button it changes into a very dim orange blinking light.
    I've tried:
    1) Resetting the SMC (No such luck)
    2) Unplugging the battery; letting the charger charge the motherboard overnight (No luck)
I'd really appreciate some fresh ideas; just to reitterate, it only stopped working the second I impulsively unplugged the charger. So, can a battery die from something like that? Short circuit? Any advice would be really appreciated as I'm in the middle of finals week and really need it.

My only issue with that is that there weren't any hardware issues before i decided to open it up. I know the apple people will be very eager to charge me for something in not convinced is a hardware issue. I just get the feeling i screwed something up while I was putting it back together. I'll post a picture of my logic board soon to see if there's something obvious I'm missing

  • Macbook Pro (Early 2011) not recognizing Apple Magic Mouse

OK, so I recently bought a MacBook Pro (Early 2011 Model) and I cant get my Magic Mouse to connect to the Bluetooth. This laptop is used, but I bought it from a Apple reseller and they told me that it was refurbished and that there should not be anything that is not working. Anyways, when I turn on my Apple Magic Mouse and go to Bluetooth or Mouse in the System Preferences, I don't see anything at all just the loading circle. It will not appear. I have tried doing the trick of holding Command+Option+P+R on startup like some people have suggested but that doesn't seem to change anything. I also brought it to the Apple store and the associate connected the mouse to one of the computers there, so I know that my mouse is working. Is there a way to tell if the Bluetooth in my laptop needs to be replaced? if so, can it be replaced easily without a big cost?

    Hi kbridea1,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your MacBook Pro isn’t recognizing your Magic Mouse but other devices are able to recognize it. The article linked below provides a lot of great troubleshooting suggestions that will resolve most issues like the one you’ve described.

  • New MacBookPro 13": iPhone 3G not showing up in iTunes

My old MacBookPro crashed and I bought a new one. I could not save anything from the old one - (and please do not ask for my backup!)
Now when I connect my iPhone 3G it does not show up in iTunes.
What has happened and what am I to do?

When you say you have tried all the suggested steps, what have you done?  If it is being seen on another computer, I would think that the problem is with the computer you are using and not the phone.  Try using another usb port on the computer.  Then try this...

  • 2011 MBP shuts down when connected to external display

I've been using my 2011 15" MBP for about a week now with no problem until today when I tried to connect it to my old 20" cinema display. I have the mini display port hooked up to the dvi adapter and a usb connection hooked up to external keyboard and mouse. Everything works just fine if I keep the lid up on the MBP, but if I shut the lid, the MBP shuts down. Down, not that the big screen goes black & then comes on again. It turns itself off.
Any way I can avoid a trip to the Apple store? In the past, the "geniuses" knew less about external displays than I did. Is there an issue because of the dual graphics cards?

no - I realized later that the machine doesn't shut off it just acts like it. The hard drive stops spinning & the screen remains black no matter what I do. This doesn't happen when I just shut the lid & then go back to working on it.
Then if I shut it again & try to get the monitor to respond, I get a blue screen of death color with a two inch band of blue noise along the left side. Very weird.

  • Imac 21.5" mid 2011 performance when connecting a 27" 2560x1440 external display

Im about to pull the trigger and buy the 27" apple cinema display. But I have concerns about the performance I will experience when connecting it to my base model imac 21.5". Can my 21.5" imac (2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 / AMD 6750M 512 MB / 12GB of RAM) run a 2560x1440 external display smoothly? Or is that too much for my graphics card? Any help is greatly appreciated. I have searched everywhere for clarification but still nothing. Thanks!

  • Macbook crashes with external displays, Macbook crashes with external displays

    Dear Community,
I have a problem with my new (Dec. 2013) Macbook Pro. Everything worked fine until two weeks ago. Then, I connected my Macbook via VGA-adapter (original) with an LCD Monitor at home (I had done this before without any problems). My Mac froze and nothing happened, so I had to reboot it manually (press the on/off button 5 seconds). The Macbook would show a grey display und would not reboot, no matter what I tried. The secure boot program did not work, either. I could start it with disk utility and load my last time machine backup.
After I did this, everything worked fine again. Last week I tried to connect my Mac with another LCD display at work (which had also worked fine before). Same error! Mac froze and nothing worked and I had to load a backup again.
I brought my Mac to the next Apple store, where a hardware check revealed no defects.
Nonetheless, they exchanged the logic board and told me everything was fine, again.
Today, I have worked the whole day using my external display at work. Everything was ok, but I could only use the external display and not the Notebook display. When I tried to sync the two monitors to work with the Mac and the external display together – same error!
I have called the Apple store, but they had no idea and just told me that the Apple warranty does not cover third-party displays. The Apple hotline suggested looking for a driver for the external displays, but there are none. And again: Until two weeks ago, everything worked without problems.
Has anybody an idea what to do with this?
    Julia

I was searching and found that the Matrox DualHead2Go maybe work. Any idea?
    Thanks

  • Displaying iPhoto slideshows on external display

I'm trying to get my wife's MacBook Pro w/ iPhoto '09 8.1.2 to display the slidehow on an external VGA monitor. She's using the miniDisplay port to VGA adapter. The symptom of the problem is a slideshow on the built-in Display (OK) but a black screen on the external display.
    Current workaround:
The slideshow plays fine on the external VGA display when "Turn on Mirroring" is selected in Display Prefs.
    BUT....
She doesn't want to turn on/off mirroring every time she wants to show photos. There's no settings in iPhoto that I found that would specify using an external monitor. Quicktime Player DOES allow you to do this. Does this feature just not exist for iPhoto slideshows? Was the slideshow function only intended for a few people to huddle around a computer screen? Hopefully it's more than that.
My wife's comment was "MS Powerpoint is smart enough to display my PPT presentation on the external display, why isn't iPhoto smart enough to do the same thing for slideshows."
I think this is a reasonable expectation of Apple iPhoto but the solution eludes me. I really don't want to have her use the export function in iPhoto as this seems like an unnecessary waste of hard drive space and time. It seems like the feature is sooooo close to being great but it's not (Apple had enough foresight to include an instant slideshow function).

    Greetings,
As you pointed out, iPhoto supports mirrored display mode. In extended desktop mode, only the one display is used (this is normal).
When I want to use an external display / projector / TV with my images:
    __Use Quicktime player
__Use an AppleTV to stream iPhoto content directly to my TV
__Use Keynote (Apple's Presentation software kinda like MS Power Point) to play a presentation
If you would like to see iPhoto support extended desktop mode submit feedback from within the iPhoto Application:
    iPhoto > Provide iPhoto Feedback
    or
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html
    Cheers.

  • G550: Display flickers / distorts. External display fine.

I have a weird issue with my G550 (which is out of warranty).  The screen flickers and distorts (fuzzy colours around objects on the screen).   If I flex the case in a certain way the problem goes away, it's hard to describe but if I apply pressure in a certain direction to the back left of the case it solves the issue... but as soon as I stop applying pressure it goes away.  I'm thinking it's a loose connection somewhere between the GPU and the display, but I'm not entirely sure where to look.  If I plugin in external displays they work fine, no flickering or distortion at all.

    hi deicist,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Community.
If the LCD screen flickers when you open or close the lid or if tilt the LCD screen on a certain angle then the problem lies on the LVDS or LCD cable (possibly got worn out by opening/closing the lid alot of times). If you're interested in fixing it, you can get spare parts here:

  • Imac 17" core duo 1.83ghz broken display how to connect external display?

Hi there! I have a 2006 Imac 17" core duo and the screen broke by accident. The repair costs are extremely high and thus I was thinking about buying an external display and hooking it up to the imac. Firstly, would such a thing be possible, and if indeed possible how would one go about setting it up?

    Try F7

  • The dock indicator lights look fairly dim on the MBA display, but bright on external displays (LCD TVs for example). Any fixes?

    (MacBook Air mid-2012)
As stated in the title, I've noticed the indicator lights on the dock which represent an open/running application looking fairly dim as opposed to the previous dock design in Lion. After a little look around on the internet, there are some others who are having a similar issue, but I've noticed that upon connecting the laptop to external displays (monitors and LCD TVs), they look extremely bright and noticeable on that particular screen.

https://discussions.apple.com/message/19126554#19126554 This thread appears to address the same issue, yet its odd how the dock "raises" if connected to an external display in my case. I'm considering locating the image files used to display the dock indicators and photoshopping them to be brighter.
