New MacBooks, No Firewire???!!!

I am a support Technician for a School District in the Phoenix area and our Technology Department is VERY concerned about Apple's decision, NOT to include a firewire port in their new MacBooks. THIS IS A MAJOR MISTAKE.
Our District owns and purchases hundreds of MacBooks each year and it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that we are able to boot these MacBooks in Target Mode. We create disk images that allows us to set up hundreds of machines in a short period of time.
Without this the Firewire port and the ability to boot in target mode, we will not be able to properly function and serve the technical needs of our school district.
We need Firewire back in order to efficiently reimage these laptops.
If there is anyone out there who might be able to come up with a suitable workaround, Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The MacBook Pro has Nvidia 9400M and 9400M GT and you get to choose which one to use. The MacBook just has the 9400M. That's what I understood from the Tuesday presentation.
The choice is to communicate the need to Apple. I don't think it is wasted effort. I think "we" should "complain" to Apple.
There is enough differentiation between the two lines already. As already mentioned, the Pro does have better graphics. It has a bigger screen. It has an ExpressCard slot. It has a backlit keyboard standard (optional on the more expensive MacBook config). Because the old plastic MacBook is still around at the low end (and Steve Jobs said it was going to be around for a long time), the MacBook is more like the MacBook Pro mini.
The other key reason the FireWire port is needed is to connect DV cameras to the Mac. If the MacBook had an ExpressCard slot, the user can get an adapter card. But it doesn't have one of those either. To have iMovie HD in iLife and not have a way to connect DV cameras seems a bit short-sighted. I can understand the executive-oriented MacBook Air not having FireWire, but the MacBook is supposed to be the portable Mac for the masses and iMovie HD is supposed to be Final Cut Pro for the masses. It doesn't make too much sense to me, and I think Apple will concur if enough people point out the need.

  • Transfer files from my IMac to new MacBook without firewire?

What is the best way to transfer files from my Imac as listed to a new MacBook. I understand there is no firewire connectivity. I would like to migrate all photos, music, and settings.

I’m sure that specific instructions come with the machine, but essentially:
Use Migration Assistant do do this. You can connect the Macs with Ethernet or even Wirelessly.

  • New macbook lack firewire

the new 13'' macbook doesn't have firewire connections like the macbook pro. is there any way to connect the new macbook to a camcorder? most all camcorders need firewire and i'm having trouble with this...

most all camcorders need firewire and i'm having trouble with this...
    The better camcorders are Firewire.
USB camcorders use formats that use high compression to store the video files thereby lowering quality. This may be good enough to give you "decent footage" if so, then you won't have a problem using a USB camcorder. However I have never been happy with the quality that a USB camcorder provides (they always look grainy to me).
All analog to digital video converters use firewire. Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out.
I would buy the white Macbook or the Macbook Pro.
Many computer peripherals use Firewire, with more coming out all the time.
Try a Google Shopping Search for 'IEEE 1394 Camcorder' (IEEE 1394 is Firewire).

  • Purchased music not syncing from new macbook

So I had a powerbook g4, and recently purchased a new macbook, and firewired my PB to the macbook, and all data, apps, etc came off without a hitch. What I did notice however, is that all the music in my itunes that is purchased will no longer sync to my ipod classic. I've updated the ipod and itunes software. I can listen to and play the purchased songs on my macbook, but won't sync to ipod.
If I hook the ipod up to powerbook, the songs load right away, but I want to use my new macbook for managing all my music.
I've repaired permissions on my macbook 2x, but nothing works.

  • Problem using migration assistant to transfer from iBook G4 to new Macbook

This is probably a very simple issue but I am a luddite. I can connect the old iBook and new MacBook by firewire and commence the migration assistant process. However, towards the end of the transfer I get a message saying that there has been a problem and I need to check all connections. The Macbook is wirelessly online (via Time Capsule) but the iBook is not online - is this the problem? Or is it that the iBook software (OS 10.3.9) is out of date?

You're lucky it isn't working. I would not use MA. You may end up overwriting Intel files with PPC files causing your computer to become dysfunctional. Instead connect them via Firewire. Boot the iBook into Target Disk Mode and the MacBook normally. The iBook's drive should appear on the MacBooks Desktop. You can then manually transfer your files. The following will help you with what you need to copy:
Folders You Can Move to Your new Mac
From the Home folder copy the contents of Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:

  • How to connect my new MacBook Air to a LaCie hard disk with TIme Capsule backup from my old Imac? LaCie has USB 2.0, FireWire and eSata ports.

How can I connect my new MacBook Air to a LaCie hard disk with TIme Capsule backup from my old Imac? LaCie has USB 2.0, FireWire and eSata ports.

You can direct connect your MBA to the LaCie via USB 2 cable.  If you have an Apple Airport Router you can USB connect the LaCie drive to the router and then use Airport Utility to configure it.  Time Machine can access it either way.

  • My new MacBook Pro and Imac can't recognize my digital video camera (Canon GL2) via FireWire 800 9 pin to 4 pin cable.

My new MacBook Pro and Imac can't recognize my digital video cameras (Canon GL2 or Sony) via FireWire 800 9 pin to 4 pin cable. I've tried two different cables.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Is your DV camera plugged in to AC power (not batteries only)? When you step down from 9 pins to 4 pins, you lose the "power" pins.

Get info then check permissions then add your curent user name (it was probably different on old Mac) and give your username full read/write permissions.

  • How can I connect my existing firewire drives to the "new" Macbook pro

I'm thinking about getting a new Macbook Pro, to take on the road.
I already have four external drives with firewire and USB 2.0 ports.
After I looked at the new machine I noticed it only had USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt ports.
I dont see any Firewire to Thunderbolt technology out there nor do I see any  USB3.0 to anything technology. How can I connect my drives to the new system?

You can use the USB3 connections for USB2.  That's downward compatible.  Just runs at USB2 speed.
Just this week apple announced a couple of TB adapters, TB-to-ethernet and TB-to-firewire.  But the FW adapter is not at the apple store as yet (at least at the time I am posting this).

  • How do I transfer CS5.5 from an old macbook pro to a new one via firewire?

My old MacBook Pro fried its graphics card and I need to transfer all of my data across to my new macBook Pro. I have everything backed up on a hard drive but when I try to open it it says that i can't because t is on a Time Machine Back-up. How do I get it to open? Do i need to get a new serial number? Not sure what to do from here.

You need to reinstall on your new MacBook Pro from your original media (if you purchased a DVD), or from the backup you made of the installation files.
You cannot successfully migrate CS5.5 using FireWire. That would not be successful. You can use the same serial number you had before. However, if you used all your two activations, you may have to Adobe to remove its listing of your old Mac so you don't lose one activation.

You can connect them in Target Mode http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661 and then drag and drop from the iMac to the MacBook.

  • I have the new macbook pro from late 2011. when i try plugging my cannon gl2 into the mac via firewire 800 it does not show up in iMovie as an option to import from. i even have gone into my settings on the camera and changed it to vcr.

I have the new MacBook Pro from late 2011. "the one before the new ritina display" i have a cannon gl2 video camera which is mini dv. when i plug it into my mac via firwire 800 it does not show up in the iMovie. i have set the settings on the camera to vcr mode and changed it to av->dv out. when i click on the import from camera on imovie it doesnt even show my camera in it. it just gives me the option to import video from my facetime camera. the camera is turned on the wires are connected i know for fact that its a firewire and not a usb. i know what they each look like. i bought the firewire cable and it was marked down cause it was an opened and used item. would it be possible that it could be deffected and if that is not the reason what other options do i have?

I would say that odds are high that you have a bad cable. Maybe that is why they returned it.
I would suggest trying a different firewire cable.
You can find Firewire cables inexpensively at monoprice.com. You need a 4 pin to 9 pin firewire cable.
    Here is a link.
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10301
    Other things to check:
Is your camera plugged in to wall power (not to batteries only). Must be hooked to an AC power source to import.

  • How do I Transfer Data from my B/W G3 to my new Macbook Pro by firewire?

I just bought a new Macbook Pro and want to move my photo and music files from my G3 to my new computer as efficiently as possible. I thought firewire was the way to go but just learned that I cant put my G3 in target mode. Does anyone have any ideas about this? Thanks!

Macs running 7.5.3 or later can share files easily with Macs running any version of Mac OS X up to 10.3.9, and with a little more complexity any Mac OS X through 10.4.10.
The learning curve is a bit steeper. But this illustrated article will guide you:
    http://homepage.mac.com/car1son/os9xnet_nfilesharing.html
Mac OS X 10.4 was revised to make room for Intel Protocols, and AppleTalk-only File Sharing was removed \[AppleTalk Printer Sharing still works]. To do File Sharing with Macs before Mac OS 9, you must initiate the Sharing from the Older Mac or use a third-party program called Shareway IP:
